Sheep Book Review: 'Halos: Somnium' by Keri Lake

Halos: Somnium is the debut novel by PNR author Keri Lake. This is what I want in a book. A story that compels, enticing characters, snark and steamy romance. I literally could not put this book down, I ended up reading it into the wee hours of the morning (on a work night) and I don't regret it one bit!

Plot:
A work assignment in Kittery, Maine should be routine for Allie Lynch; nothing more than to prove herself as a brilliant engineer. Instead she finds herself torn between two men: a gorgeous military guard, Colton Briggs, and her devilishly handsome colleague, Drew Costa. To resist temptation, Allie does the only thing she can: she throws herself into her work. But fate has other plans for Allie. Women are going missing all around her, Allie is struck with a series of life-threatening mishaps, and she becomes the obsession of a local deranged psychopath. Thrust into a dark world that she can hardly fathom, Allie must fight for her very survival, open her mind to new realities – and open her heart to the possibility of love. Because both of these men are trouble – but one is a greater danger than she could ever imagine …

Our leading lady is Allie, and I don't think I've ever to-date related so much with a main character. And maybe I won't relate to a character as much ever again. I liked almost every aspect of this gal, her witty humor and soft touch with handling the men around her. She's got a dirty mind yet keeps it mostly hidden inside, but man oh man does she have some smutty thoughts about the guard who works the gate at her current job. He's tall dark and smokin' hot, gruff and abrupt but something about the man compels her to act on instinct. Colton Briggs is all smex and badboy wrapped into one. You get more little bits about his character as the story builds and I loved it.

Allie started to loose me a little as the story went on, she is constantly getting herself into some sticky life-or-death situations and needs to be rescued a tad too often. I'm all for the hero stepping in to help out but I wish the author would have let her lead a little more than follow. Clingy and pleading does not rub me the right way at all. That being said, the book in no way takes a big hit with some of the overuse of girly emotions. But as the series progresses I hope Allie steps it up a little in the action department or at least TRIES a little harder NOT to die.

Moving on to Colton *sighs* I want this man. All of him. On my man candy list there's Barrons (Fever series) taking the #1 seat, but coming a very close second would be Colton. God lord, this man had everything I need and more. He takes the book's pages and burns them up. I wanted more Colton and less...other people. lol. I had to stop myself from rushing through the secondary characters just to get back to Colton and Allie. Their dynamic was off the charts! Why can't I stumble out of a "bah" late at night and walk straight into the arms of this man? Hmm? More character dialog between out main two would be well-worth it as this series continues.

The overall plot to story is well thought-out and beautifully executed. As the story starts out Allie almost hits a random woman walking down the highway, implications of ghosts and missing women get the reader thinking of a deeper plot-line. But by the end you're left with more questions than answers. A few situations are resolved but more doors have opened and plenty of hard choices are ahead. The East Coast accent was delivered in just the right amounts making it believable, but I would have preferred less comments from Allie's narration. (A little too many "I" used when not needed.)

I absolutely want more of this series and eagerly await what lies ahead. Proudly rocking it hard for Team Colton!
