Book Review: Semper Mine (Sons of War) By Lizzy Ford

Semper Mine (Sons of War)
 By: Lizzy Ford
207 pages
A STANDALONE novel in the Sons of War contemporary military romance series.

A freak accident landed both of the Khavalov twins under my command, just before a routine mission turned into a nightmare. I brought home one twin in a coffin and the other in a coma missing his leg. I did everything right – and still people died. I can’t forget that night or how many lives it changed, including mine.

It’s natural for their sister, Katya, to blame me. I made one decision in the middle of a firefight, and it shattered her sheltered world. I’m the ice to her fire, and when we first meet, it’s not pretty. I don’t fear war or death, and I am definitely not going to let a beautiful woman with a quick temper and broken heart scare me off, either. I know she’s hurting, and I’m determined to make sure she’s okay. It’s the least I can do for the twins.

Military romance may not have any of the paranormal elements I love but it sure does have some smexy alpha men! This book was a really good read, I enjoyed may aspects of the dynamic and overall approach that's centered on grief and how we all deal with it. Not only as individuals, but also as a family, to work through the loss of a loved one.

Our leading man is all kinds of badass sex pot, he's got the whole package going on. Strong and silent, tortured past and career driven future. This dudes prepared for war or zombies, I loved it. I didn't enjoy his constant high-handed attitude on how to deal with the feisty Katya. He walked a close line on being a bully, I get he's a military stud but it was a little too much for my tastes.

Katya was the best part of this story for me. She's head strong and passionate to the point of pain. But that's her character and it's written in a very organic way. Her dad's character came a close second though, he seems like a jolly fellow!

Most of the story is written in the same tone as well. Meaning, even you're in the female's POV it sounds the same as the male's. There was not a big difference in how the internal characters were written. Which in this case I wish it would have stayed either the whole time in his head, or hers.

At one point in the story our hero "Iceman" sleeps with someone else to get the gal he's pinning for out of his head. That didn't sit well with me and I would not be okay finding out what my man did. Even if we were not together! It's not rational but how often do us women obey the laws of rationale? I get that men and women do wham-bam sex nights, but if he was burning some eternal love candle for Katya that was sure NOT the way to show it.

Overall, this was a good read that touches on many aspects of PTSD and grief. If you like strong sexy men and sexy romance then grab this one!
