Book Review: Strange Girls: A Women in Horror Anthology + giveaway

Strange Girls: A Women in Horror Anthology
with stories selected by Azurra Nox
February 18, 2020
344 pages
Genre: YA Horror
For fans of American Horror Story, Shirley Jackson, and Creepshow.

You know them. Those girls that aren't quite like everyone else. Those girls who stand out in the crowd. Those girls that dare to be different. Those girls are dangerous.

In Strange Girls, twenty-one authors dare to tackle what makes the girls in this collection different. Vampires, selkies, murderous mermaids, succubus, and possessed dolls take center stage in these short stories that are sure to invoke feelings of quiet terror and uneasiness in the reader. Following the successful debut of Women in Horror anthology with My American Nightmare, Strange Girls is the sophomore effort to showcase these talented women in a genre that is often dominated by the male gaze.

Dare to take a walk on the dark side.

I am not usually one who picks up a book containing a collection of short stories. I thought myself one who prefers a complete tell from intro to ending. I liked the title and forward description so thought I would give this a go.

At first, I thought I was going to read about women or girls that had specific attributes which made them either villains or heroes. (Such said the forward). I even reread the forward to make sure. I would add to that forward the word “victims” as in some of the stories the female lead seemed less in control that controlled.

I would say all the stories gave a different look into a variety of female psyche’s and found that an interesting aspect. This read includes about 22 stories. Some sounded like an urban legend and others sounded as if someone were discussing a headline we might see in the “Star” news publication, while still others felt like everyday gossip regarding weird incidents. Most were a little dark and all had a discomforting story to tell.

I thought all of the authors showed talent but more than a few stood out in their writing and construction. I choose not to summarize each one but encourage you, reader, to journey into a variety of women's stories and find your favorite. I know there were some that I wanted to scream: “How does this turn out!” If nothing else, I just may have found some authors to look for when they write the full-size novels!

Getting “4” shorty sheep!
