Bad boy. Alpha. Lethal.

Some say those are qualities of a good leader. Others disagree.

Heir to the Vampire throne and Lilith’s only son, I’m being forced to find a mate.

Unfortunately for my beloved mama, I found my fated mate already.

No one compares to her.

The problem?

She’s a Lycan princess— completely off limits. If that’s not bad enough, I’m not her only potential mate.

Can I ignore the pull of my fated mate to make my mother happy and take the throne?

EXCERPT BOOK 1:

“You will choose a mate, and then take the throne.” Lilith’s voice resonated with a finality that made me cringe. I held in my irritation and scanned the great throne room. When she put her power into her words, no one—not even me—could disobey.

Fucking rules.

Lilith was my mother—and Lucifer knew I loved her—but I couldn’t rule the vampires while under her thumb and no more than her puppet. When I did become the High King of the vampires, there were going to be changes. The old ways didn’t work for us as they once did.

I fisted my hands over the arms of my throne. Why we were meeting in the great room to discuss my mating situation was beyond me. Mother was supposed to be gone already, but The Blood—the vampire council—demanded I find a mate first. They never gave their reasons, which made me suspicious.

“Mother, it isn’t that easy.” My chest tightened with an unfamiliar feeling. Longing and loneliness stirred within. I’d already met my mate, not that it would do me any good. I couldn’t claim my one true mate, ever.

It was several years ago. My guard had convinced me to go to a local bar owned by one of their own that catered to both vampires and lycans. Many of the lycans attended public schools with the humans, able to blend in all but one night a month when the moon was full. The younger lycans were notorious for bar-hopping, and vampires weren’t much different.

A vampire-owned bar wasn’t unusual. We owned the night, after all, and humans in bars made poor choices, leaving us open to feed without detection or having to use our telepathic abilities. Using telepathy to mask our feeding always drained us.

We’d entered a local bar that particular night, and I’d almost left when I smelled them. Lycans. A growl escaped me as I walked through the door, my guard flanking me. It was no secret that vampires and lycans had warred since the beginning of time. Well, maybe not that long, but there were times it felt that way.

Scanning every dark corner of the place, I spotted several of the wolves crammed into booths in near the back of the bar. The entire establishment reeked of them, so I slowed my breathing to minimize the overwhelming scent of dog.

Ignoring the lycans, my guard and I made our way to the bar where a small group of vampires close to my age gathered. They met my gaze briefly and nodded their heads once in a slight bow. I nodded back in greeting. One thing I hated about being the vampire prince was my people insisted on being at attention in my presence. It was annoying. My people weren’t fucking puppets.

They were people with lives. As long as they didn’t expose us to the humans, I didn’t care what they did.

It was one thing I was already starting to change—I only wanted them to address me formally when I was sitting on my throne.

Once seated, the bartender took our drink orders and left. My guard rested against the bar so he could watch the door and my back simultaneously. “You know there are large factions of younger vampires in favor of ending our centuries-long feud with the lycans.”

Yeah, I knew. However, I had little interest. “Nothing I can do about it at the moment.”

My time to rule would come soon enough—three to four years to be exact – and I didn’t want to waste my free years worrying about vampire-lycan politics.

The air conditioning kicked on, blowing cool air through the bar and mixing the scents of vampire and lycans. That was when her scent hit me full-force, nearly knocking me off my stool. Rose water and mint, mixed with an intoxicating earthy spice that called to my soul. My body heated and my heart pulsed, pumping blood straight to my dick. What the fuck?

My head whipped around, searching for the owner of that scent—the scent of my mate. When I spotted her, the noise from the bar around me seemed to disappear for a few moments. Her wavy chestnut hair was pulled back in a high ponytail, and two thick strands of hair framed her oval face. She wore a pair of faded blue jeans with tears cut into the thighs and a black T-shirt that said, “I howl at the moon.”

She was a lycan. Fuck me.

“Who is she?” I nudged my guard. He came to the bar frequently and was more likely to know. I suspected he was one of the ones encouraging vampires to give lycans a chance.

My guard followed my line of sight and grunted. “Jillian,” he said. “She’s hot, but she’s too hot. Trouble. She’s the lycan princess, only heir to the High Alpha.”

Fuck me. She was my mate. I knew it as surely as I knew I could never be with her. An ache formed in my soul at that thought. Normally I didn’t have a problem with breaking the rules and taking what was mine. But this was different.

I had to take the vampire throne one day soon and choose a vampire mate. It was the law and my future. A future I’d have to live without my fated mate. I’d never be accepted if I had a lycan as my mate, much less the lycan princess.

Sara E. Tall's Playlist for her YA fantasy Misfit’s Rise + giveaway

First off, I would like to thank I Smell Sheep for hosting me! After wading through several guest post options, I decided to share the top ten songs that inspired Alpha: Misfit’s Rise. I’m a music addict, so it’s partially just an excuse to listen to my favorite jams again. But I also know these songs will give you a taste for my story unlike any other. Anyway, enjoy!

Walking on Air by Kerli

This is Billie’s, my MC’s, theme song. Though the music video makes this song seem like it’s about mind control, the line “She will go and set the world on fire, no one ever thought she could do that,” is the line I built Billie around.

Memories by Panic! At the Disco
This song, while about a struggling young couple, reminds me of any struggling relationship that finds itself looking back on the good old days when things were less complicated. This a trap and Billie and her mother constantly find themselves falling into.

Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
Like many YA fantasy stories, Billie is literally breaking away from the world she knew to enter a magical one. And while this step is essential for her to become the mage she longs to be, forgetting where she came from would leave her more lost than before.

Unwritten by Natasha Bettingfield
This is another one of Billie’s theme songs, and I love writing to this song. The story of these characters in my head is literally unwritten. I love the possibility that entails. I mean sure, I have an idea of what I want them to do, but they often end up rebelling and writing their own story. They are very independent people.

Seven Devils by Florence at the Machine
This song has inspired Alpha on many different levels, but as I was writing a visual, choreographed version of the history of the Magi—this song was my inspiration. Often times we are our own worst enemy.

Riverside by Agnes Obel
This is the theme song for Lucian, Billie’s mentor. I struggled for a long-time to find the right song for him. This song captures the refinement and composure Lucian portrays, while also hinting at the deep and ravaging pain he experiences. Though Lucian is, at times, Billie’s only ally —she sometimes forgets how little she truly knows about him.

Radioactive by Imagine Dragons
I choreographed a lot of the magic fight scenes to this song. It captures the essence of Billie’s magic. It is often too explosive and unpredictable for even her to control. Her power will leave an impression of some form or another in the Realm. Of that, there is no doubt.

Mystic Flute by Crystal Skull Meditation
In case you didn’t guess by how many times I used the word choreograph, I love to dance. So much so that I made dance a part of Misfit’s Rise. One dance performance that Billie witnesses, called, “Dance of Shadows,” was choreographed to this song. It portrays the dramatic extinction of shapeshifters, a former Mage species.

Sail by Awolnation
I’ve always loved this song because I think it captures a lot of what Billie’s feeling. She’s struggling to fit into a world that has no place for her, and while a part of her is desperately trying to fit anyway, another part of her just wants to sail away.

Fire meets Fate by Ruelle
I’ve come to associate fire with Billie because of its dual nature. Fire is both powerful, and gentle. Life-giving and destructive, and it can switch from one to the other in a heartbeat. And as Billie’s fate is so tied to her equally unpredictable and potentially dangerous power, this song is the perfect note to end on.

And that concludes my list. I would love to hear what you all think of my song choices, and what these songs make you think about Misfit’s Rise. Look forward to hearing from you!

-Sara

A Half-Fae misfit returns to the Magical Realm of her birth to discover it’s far from the fairy tale she imagined.

A century after the Mages of Earth found sanctuary in an underground Realm, those whose magic is sub-par or whose half-breed heritage leaves them powerless and forced into exile back on Earth. They can’t have them tainting the magic of the others, after all.

As a Fae/Human hybrid, Billie should fit right in. Except, she’s anything but powerless, making her a misfit among misfits. When her powers nearly destroy a human home, she's given a chance to return. Returning to the Realm has always been Billie’s dream, but the Realm is anything but a fairy tale.

Despite its claims of acceptance and equality, ancient rivalries between the Realm’s magical species are threatening to rip it apart. Billie somehow manages to land herself in the middle, a dangerous place for an outcast to be. What’s more, the powerful magic that brought her there suddenly vanishes, leaving her vulnerable to the attacks of those who think a misfit doesn’t belong in the Realm.

Staying in the Realm is her only chance to live life as a true Mage, but it could cost her life.

Excerpt:
“There’s the little fire freak.” My eyes shot open. Standing before me was Tanya with her usual wannabes. She was dressed in her predictable mixture of bad-girl-meets-prep, wearing the pigtails only she could pull off as chic and not goody-two-shoes.

“What’s the matter? Nothing to say to me?” She stepped forward. “Not even an apology for blowing up my house?”

“Not really.” People always said if you didn’t let bullies get to you, they’d get bored and move on. It was time to put that to the test.

“When did you become an arsonist, anyway?” she took another step. “Was it to deal with your dad leaving you in that ghetto with all the other freaks?”

“My father didn’t leave,” I snapped before I could stop myself. “He’s dead.”

“Oh, I’m sure that’s what your mom told you.” She was right in front of my face now. “But we all know if your daddy was dead, you would have gotten a nice life insurance check and you wouldn’t be so dirt poor.”

At a different time I might have laughed at that. I guess it didn’t occur to Tanya not everyone could afford a life insurance policy.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said as I leapt off the bench and shoved my way past her.

“I’m trying to help you, Billie,” she said from behind me. “You and your friends. I know it can be hard coming from nothing.”

Even though I knew I should just keep walking, I whirled around. “You don’t know a thing about us.”

“You know what the number one profession is for girls from low-income neighborhoods?”

The people around us gasped, though the ones trying to look cool laughed. I was almost impressed with Tanya for being that subtle.

I glanced at her Prada bag, my hand twitching. It would be so easy to just rip that thing open. And it would be a lot better than she deserved. But the Officials had told me not to use magic, and I had a feeling my ability to follow their order would affect whether they sent me to the Academy, or to a containment facility.

Slowly, I turned around again. “I’m not listening to you.”

“You and tall-chick might be able to make it, but the chubby one? What guy would pay for a night with that?”

There was more laughter, but I barely heard it as I whirled around and screamed, “Shut up!”

Everything happened too fast. All I knew was that one moment I was glaring at Tanya, breathing hard while she folded her arms and smirked; and the next second the tall, marble centerpiece from the fountain was hurtling toward Tanya’s head.

She screamed and ducked, and the marble spiral crashed down just behind her shoulder. Even though it missed her, it still drenched her and her bag with a splash of murky, icy water.

For a second nobody moved, as everyone’s eyes moved from Tanya, to the wrecked fountain, to me.

About the Author:
Sara's enjoyed creating fantastic stories since she was old enough to hold a play sword, around the time she learned how to walk. Gradually she learned to direct her creative energy into writing, and it’s been a downward spiral ever since then. When she's not writing she’s probably either dancing or reading random Wikipedia pages. She also enjoys spending time in her part-time home away from home, Yellowstone National Park, which is the most fantastical land she's ever been too.

EXCERPT:
As she hovered in the center of the room, next to a solid wooden table, she heard the doors shut and lock behind her, and her heart began to pound. A room like this was not where she expected the king to take her.

The swish of his cloak came close behind her and she was rotated in the air until she faced him.

Amara had only ever seen the king from a distance. And even then, she tried not to let her eyes wander to him whenever he was nearby. None of the other real servants looked at him directly, and she had always copied their behavior and posture as much as possible to try to blend in. But now that she had the chance to scrutinize him up-close, it was like finally putting a face to the horrible mental depiction she had of the king for so long.

Unfortunately, he was extremely good-looking. It was said that most of the Visant family were, but she’d never seen him close enough to realize just how good-looking he was. His chiseled features and refined appearance suited the room they were in, yet didn’t seem to match his threatening appearance in the corridor, but she knew better than to take anything at face value with him.

His eyes were a deep brown, as was his hair, and both complemented his tan brown skin, but the other defining thing about him was his size. The man was enormous, even in the spacious room they were in. Perhaps because he was always well-dressed and surround by men of a similar size, he had never seemed quite so big from a distance.

While she examined him, the Alpha stared at her with interest, his eyes taking in everything about her. He then stepped back and began his assessment over her body, rotating her with the magic that held her to look over all areas of her, front and back. Anger trickled into Amara as he surveyed her. It was obvious he was sizing her up for his slave service, which infuriated her. If he thought she was going to allow herself to be the first Omega in over a century to be prostituted out to his dukes, lords, and noblemen, he had no idea who he was dealing with. There was plenty she had already seen in this room that could be used to enact the suicide protocol, and as soon as she had the change she would be following procedure. He was welcome to give her corpse to those depraved bastards—they would probably still use it anyway.

When he turned her back to face him, he observed for a long moment, an amusement growing among the curiosity in his eyes.

“Your anger is intriguing,” he murmured, lifting a hand to her face. A rough finger trailed from the corner of her eye down her cheek. “I have to wonder what you could possibly be angry about since you are the one conducting illegal activities in my castle.”

Amara held her eyes on him, even more annoyed she could not escape his touch. It sent a shiver down her, sparking a fear of strange men touching her while she was incapable of escaping.

“Admit it,” he said, tilting his head to watch her. “Admit your true purpose here. There is no point in continuing with this denial when I have you so tightly in my grasp.” His hand lowered down her neck to her chest. “I will not allow you any freedoms or any pleasures unless you are completely honest with me.”

Book Review: Alpha: An Urban Fantasy Novel (War of the Alphas Book 3) by SM Reine

by SM Reine
250 pages
June 4, 2015
No longer an Omega, Deirdre Tombs has found her animal. She only had to die and rise from her own ashes to discover it.

And she’s returned with a purpose.

For the first time in history, the role of Alpha is up for election. If Everton Stark takes charge, he could disband the ruthless government organization that has made life miserable for shifters like Deirdre.

One problem: Stark doesn’t want to run. He only wants vengeance against his wife, Rhiannon, who killed many of his followers and stole the Ethereal Blade.

While Stark is focused on revenge, Rhiannon is focused on winning the election for Alpha. Victory means tearing the Winter Court apart with civil war. It means riots. It means unleashing a deadly unseelie assassin that devours souls. Anything to get her dragon shifter mate in power…with Rhiannon at his side.

Alpha is book 3 in the War of the Alphas series by SM Reine. This series is a continuation of Reine’s long running series which focuses on what happens after Genesis.

Deirdre is no longer a mystery shifter, or an Omega. She finds her animal when she dies and rises from her own ashes. She is just as surprised by the turn of events as Everton Stark is! Riley Gresham has decided that the role of Alpha should be voted on by all gaean species. Deirdre wants to help the gaean’s so bad and thinks Stark is the one to solve all the problems of the world. Only issue, Stark has no interest in doing so. All he wants is revenge! Revenge against Rhiannon, his wife and Melichor her dragon shifter mate!

Even though I would love to hate Stark, I find myself siding with him and Deirdre at every turn. Stark is brutal but there is still a spark of humanity in him. Deirdre is the only one that brings it out in him. The spark of passion and tension between these two characters is very dynamic.
