The Night Blade: Indulgence Series 2
by Erin Kellison
May 23, 2022
Lose yourself in the second installment of bestselling author Erin Kellison's Indulgence series, where unlikely allies must contend with savage beasts, spiteful gods...and each other to survive.

Luck isn't going Terah Crane's way. She's stuck with the prince of Fury, the arrogant scion of Pyre, who passionately hates her. Yeah, well...she doesn't like him much, either.

When a vengeful goddess captures someone Terah loves, Adomanei reluctantly joins the rescue mission to settle the debt he owes her. Enemies at heart but united by purpose, they set out upon a dangerous journey into a foreign godland to reach their quarry.

Adom's godborn talents allow him to disguise his identity, but Terah must travel under the cover of darkness, even if it takes them into the belly of a mountain beast and across a sea of bones. A cryptic clue suggests that Terah has allies among the ghosts of Phemerae—if only she can find them. But Adom doesn't trust anyone who strives against the gods.

Beset by monsters and pursued by spies, Terah and Adom are forced to watch each other's backs, learn to speak with a glance, and be there when the other falls. But will it be enough? Because a malevolent Power stalks them, utter ruin on its mind, and Adom and Terah find themselves trapped together in an intrigue of the gods that will change their world.
"There are gods and monsters and people who think they're ordinary, but turn out to be anything but. There's betrayal and heartache and...I feel like we've just skimmed the surface...BUT I AM HERE FOR IT. *thumbs up*" — Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal (VINE VOICE)

"The characters were vivid, tangible...I was easily transported into a world packed with action, adventure, betrayals, and breadcrumb teasers that kept me on the edge of my seat. And the adventure has truly just started! Highly recommended" — Joyffree (Top Contributor: Fantasy Books/VINE VOICE)

Excerpt: Violet Spark (Butterfly Witch, #1) by Elsa Jade & Erin Kellison + giveaway

Violet Spark (Butterfly Witch, #1)
by Elsa Jade & Erin Kellison
January 24th, 2022
Genres: Adult, New Adult, Urban Fantasy
Imogen Taylor: Artist. College dropout. Gamer. Screwup.

I had big plans for art school in California, but when the best mom in the world—mine—needed help, I came home to Arbolito, Arizona instead. I even got my old high school job back, making smoothies at the Desert Freeze…in winter.

So, yeah, by day, my life is a cold, tropical-hued hell. But at night, I escape reality by plugging into my favorite video game, Legendelirium, to become a powerful, sexy witch, going on epic quests while vanquishing baddies.

Until a cute guy from my gaming world shows up at work, gives me the worst kiss ever, and my reality and fantasy lives get blended by purple goo laced with lethal, nanorobotic technology.

Now, I’ve got powers—strange, witchy ones. Scary people are after me, and I don’t know who to trust. And, get this. Somehow, it’s up to me to defeat them, or it’s game over.

Enter the fast, fun, urban fantasy adventure of the BUTTERFLY WITCH series, where magic and science become one—mostly accidentally.

* This is a standalone first book in the brand-new BUTTERFLY WITCH series. Contains swearing, some intense action scenes (low gore), super-slow-burn romantic interest (also low gore), and does not end on a cliffhanger—but, yeah, there’s more to come! *

Chapter 1
A towering black-cloaked monolith of a man stalked me through my dreams. I ran, but too slow, my steps and my heart pounding to the ominous beat of The Imperial March…

I cracked an eyelid, fumbled for my phone, and swiped my thumb across the clock app. Shit. Somehow I’d snoozed Darth Vader twice already and now had only fifteen minutes left before the start of my shift as manager at the Desert Freeze. I swung my feet to the floor.

And I stepped on Gwumpki.

With a vicious hiss, the ugly brown monster with his cabbage-green eyes buried all twenty-one claws in my bare ankle.

I yelped and flinched back, accidentally flipping the damned polydactyl menace—still clinging to my foot—up onto the mattress. For one yowling heartbeat, I was tangled in fleece blanket, various wires trailing to my gaming system, and half-feral feline. “Motherf—”

A rap at the door. “Imogen! Are you up? You’re going to be late for work.”

As if I didn’t know that. “I’m up.” Sort of, but not like anybody was watching.

The damn cat had probably sneaked in yesterday while I was at work, hunkered down while I gamed all night, just so he could attack me this morning while I was weak.

I wriggled my foot out of his clutches after one last, nasty scratch across the back of my hand. Under the blanket, Gwumpki growled, brown tail lashing across my phone.

I snatched the 3G embarrassment of a phone out from behind him. “Hate you too.”

In the bathroom, the menthol odor of Mom’s CBD cream was almost as sharp as claws in my nose. She must’ve had a hard night, but I hadn’t heard anything through my headphones. Guilt bit into me even harder.

Holding my breath, I peed, washed my hands, slicked my wet fingers through my hair to pull every long brown strand into a ponytail per the Desert Freeze employee handbook rules, and tugged on jeans and yesterday’s “Freeze Your Life Away!” t-shirt. It wasn’t that dirty.

Except for the smear of blood. But that was fresh. “Dammit, Gwump.” I swabbed at the stain, mostly making it bigger.

“Imogen! Breakfast is ready!”

“Coming.” The thick sizzle-smell of scrambled eggs and veg was like quick-set concrete I had to wade through down the hall to the kitchen. I checked my texts, saw the one last night from Swann, and quickly stuffed the phone in my back pocket. Ugh, couldn’t think about that right now.

“No time to eat, Mom.” I grabbed a travel mug from the drying rack next to the sink and poured myself half the coffee.

“If you didn’t stay up so late…” Coming around the end of the kitchen counter, she held out a small container. The reusable plastic was scarred from thousands of baked zitis over the decade that she’d been a psychiatric nurse on the late shift. “You can’t keep playing your life away, Imogen.”

“I’ll just grab something from work,” I said as I backed away from the leftovers.

Her shuffling steps were too slow to catch me, and I darted out of the kitchen, grabbing my bag from the low table in the front hall. It was like high school all over again.

Except worse.

“Have a good day,” she called from the kitchen. “Love you, honey.”

“Love you too.” But I was already shutting the door between us.

The chilly desert morning air was like a slap in the face—one of those light slaps an evil lord gives his soon-to-be-dead minion, halfway between amused and alarming. Not that Arbolito, Arizona had a lot of evil lords. It didn’t have a lot of anything besides strip malls. Mom bought half the Mission Revival duplex in this suburban subdivision for its magnet school, not its originality.

Not that it ever got that chilly. But fifties was cold enough for my thin blood that I wished I was still snuggled in my fleecy blanket.

Except Gwumpki was there, wrapped up like the ground chuck cabbage roll he was named after. And now I had, like, ten minutes to get to work.

With a sigh, I balanced the coffee in the crook of my arm while I wrestled with the Fiesta’s finicky lock. Wouldn’t it just be my luck if the key broke off?

The top popped off the travel mug, and black coffee sloshed…

But I caught it with just a tiny splash across the back of my claw-marked hand. “Ha!” No caffeine lost.

It’s the little victories in life that matter.

And I made it to the Desert Freeze with two minutes to spare.

Enter bestselling author Erin Kellison’s captivating new world of gods, monsters, passion, and games…

Terah Crane knows not to tempt the gods. A happy life—or at least an uncomplicated one—involves no gods at all. And since her loving grandfather bought her an Indulgence that exempts her from their service, she can focus on her other problems of being recently divorced, broke, and unemployed.

Seeking a fresh start, Terah packs everything she owns into her beat-up car and moves to her family’s empty country cottage—never mind that deadly firedrakes occasionally wander into the garden. When an unlikely flood carries a cracked pillar of stone from a nearby shrine right to Terah’s doorstep, it seems the gods demand her service after all.

The man trapped inside the monolith is still alive, and Terah’s reluctant task is to resurrect him, his godkiller of a sword—and his fury for vengeance.

The gods’ awesome powers are matched only by their careless, capricious whims—and vulnerable mortals are often the ones to suffer and die. Now, the gods are watching Terah, making her a pawn in their savage game. Her survival depends upon navigating a new world of peril and treachery, taking up a weapon, and making a fateful move of her own…

EXCERPT FROM BAD WOLF BY JENNIFER ASHLEY
Broderick McNaughton woke with a raging headache, dry mouth, and what felt like hot bands around his wrists. What the fuck?

He didn’t remember getting this drunk. He remembered hanging out at Liam’s bar for a while then heading to the fight club with Spike. Spike was a refreshing guy to be with—he didn’t talk a lot, wasn’t noticeably crazy, and didn’t expect you to speak if there was nothing important to say.

Spike could also kick ass in the fight ring and go out for pizza. Broderick had joined him for the pizza tonight—anything to keep from heading home to his three pain-in-the-ass younger brothers, a half-feral Shifter Feline, and the half-feral’s very protective human mate.

After he’d said good night to Spike, Broderick had dropped in on Sean Morrissey, the Shiftertown’s Guardian, to report on ongoing tracker business. He’d sat with Sean on his back porch a while, watching Sean cuddle his sleeping cub on his lap.

Somewhere between saying good night to Sean and heading home across the dark common yards behind Shifter houses, Broderick had lost consciousness.

The bands around his wrists were real—heavy-duty metal handcuffs. Strong enough for a Shifter, tight enough that even if he shifted to wolf, he wouldn’t be able to slip his big paws out.

Broderick couldn’t see and could barely breathe, because there was a bag over his head, its drawstring tight around his throat.

What the holy fuck?

Broderick’s first instinct was to struggle, to break out of his restraints no matter how strong and kill whoever had done this. His second instinct told him to shut up and lie still and figure out where he was. No sense busting out of the cuffs and bag to find five guys with machine guns waiting for him. Cunning was sometimes the better part of valor.

Broderick remained motionless. He might not be able to see, but he could hear and he could scent, which for a Shifter, were more important senses at times like these.

He smelled humans, not in the room with him, but definitely nearby. His hackles rose. He doubted these humans were police or Shifter Bureau’s mighty patrollers—they’d have put him into a sterilized cage, not bothering with the head bag. When he woke, a Shifter Bureau worker with a clipboard would explain why they’d decided to round him up, cage him, and terminate him.

So, if he hadn’t been caught by Shifter Bureau or police, that left Shifter hunters.

Even as these thoughts formed, Broderick had his doubts. Hunters would have also stuck him into a cage or simply shot him. Besides, no way human hunters could have sneaked into Shiftertown. It was too well guarded by Shiftertown’s trackers, of which Broderick was one.

Then who?

He felt cold stone under his body, smelled musty, dank air behind the head bag. Floorboards creaked, but overhead. He also smelled damp lint and laundry detergent, which meant a washing machine and dryer nearby. Conclusion—he was in somebody’s basement.

Humans lived in this house, not Shifters. So again—what the fuck?

He smelled another odor, one of warm plastic, and he heard a hum of electronics. Interesting.

Broderick should have said screw it tonight and tried to see Joanne. He could be curled up on the sofa with her, watching TV, or ignoring the TV while they explored kissing and touching. Instead he’d been noble and left her alone. What was wrong with him?

A door scraped open, and footsteps headed down a flight of wooden stairs. Heavy treads, men, and the lighter tread of a female. The light steps moved swiftly past the heavy.

“Is this him?” the woman asked, breathless, eager.

Goddess, please don’t tell me this is a Shifter groupie who wants a shag. I might throw up on her.

The bag loosened, and then was ripped from Broderick’s head. He still couldn’t see—a blindfold covered his eyes. Light penetrated the cloth, a very bright one, as though someone shone a flashlight on his face.

He felt breath touch his cheek, feminine, almost sweet, but cold and rapid with excitement. A small hand in his hair raised his head. Broderick suppressed his growl, his urge to snap out of the restraints and attack.

“Are you sure this is him?” the woman asked. She sounded young, especially for a human, past teen years, but not much. Broderick’s head was moved left and right, the woman’s breath coming faster. “Wait …” She released him abruptly, and Broderick’s head clunked to the cement floor.

“What the hell did you bring me?” she demanded.

“The Shifter who came out of the Guardian’s back door,” a man answered. His voice was deep, holding strength, yet Broderick heard and smelled his fear. Of a woman not much older than a cub?

“This isn’t him!” She climbed to her feet, her voice shrill. The flashlight beamed against Broderick’s blindfold. “Does this look like a Feline? He’s Lupine, you idiot.”

“How the hell are we supposed to tell the difference?” the man asked with the annoyance of a scared person. “You didn’t give us a picture to go by.”

“Four Shifters live in that house,” the young woman snapped. “Two are female. I would have thought you had at least a fifty-fifty chance of snatching the right male. But no, you had to bring me someone completely off the chart. He’s obviously a grunt worker. No use to me at all!”

Was she insane? The two Shifters who lived in Sean’s house were Sean, the Shiftertown Guardian, and his father, Dylan. If this woman’s thugs had captured Dylan, he’d have killed her by now and all these guys too—and joined Spike for three pizzas. Sean wouldn’t have been much safer for her, but maybe a little more polite before he left their bodies in broken piles.

Ah, the lucky sons of bitches. They’d snagged Broderick instead.

Book Review: Shadow Touched (complete four novella series) by Erin Kellison

Shadow Touched
by Erin Kellison
“A dark and scrumptious treat.”—Alexandra Ivy

A darkness looms over humankind, lurks in mirrors, blurs boundaries—a twilight world ruled by powerful mage Houses.

It is bleeding into our world, bringing with it banshees, wraiths, fae from the twisting forests of Twilight. But Eleanor Russo’s problem is a very different kind of phenomenon. Her dark mirror image is a wild thing, willfully seducing the very man Ellie hoped could help her...

Dr. Cam Kalamos has devoted his career to exploring the boundaries between this world and Twilight. But nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two...

As Ellie and Cam explore their deepest desires and barely escape with their lives, there is only one certainty: Trusting in shadows is a dangerous game.

Includes the novellas “Shadow Touch,” “Shadow Play” and “Shadow Hunt,” plus the never before published “Shadow Burn.”

*fangirl squee* If you've read any of my reviews of Erin's Shadow books then you know how much I love her storytelling and writing style. First a little background on her Shadow book series. You can skip this part if you just want the review about the Shadow Touched novellas. I'm just going to explain how all three of Erin's series fit together.

background, you can skip this part
The Shadow series: Shadow Bound, Shadow Fall, Shadowman (series is complete)
-these books are about a place called Twilight, that lies between our world and the afterlife. All must pass through Twilight to get to heaven or hell. The magic in Twilight is called Shadow and it has started seeping back into our world. And with it, some pretty scary creatures called Wraiths. The books are about how the humans are dealing with this threat and some awesome romance between humans and fae/half-breeds.

The Shadow Kissed series: Fire Kissed, Soul Kissed, TBA (not complete)
-these books are about the Mages. When Shadow was part of our world long ago, Mages could use the Shadow and ruled...humans weren't treated very well. Then the Shadow was locked in Twilight and the Mages could no longer access it, but hid waiting for the magic to come back. Mages live in houses with a feudal like system and they don't like humans or half-breeds. The books are about mage society trying to rule again and bring Shadow back. Of course these are romances too and we get lots of forbidden love! Book one, Fire Kissed, has one of my all time favorite couples Jack and Kaye.

The Shadow Touched novella series: Shadow Touched, Shadow Play, Shadow Hunt, Shadow Burn (complete series)
-these stories are a bridge between the Shadow series and the Shadow Kissed series. The four novellas are a continuous story about Ellie and Cam's adventures. These stories are centered around the Segue Institute (set up by humans to study Shadow). This is where the Shadow world and the Mage world start to clash.

You can read the three series in any order and not be lost, they all stand on their own, but you might run into a small spoiler or two. If you want to read in order: The Shadow series, The Shadow Touched series, The Shadow Kissed series.

Review
Shadow Touch, the first novella was released June 2011. And I loved it. Then came the next two in 2012 and 2013. I had to wait till Jan 2016 to get the last installment, Shadow Burn. Now it wasn't that bad of a wait because each novella has a complete story and no cliff hangers. But lucky you! The whole  four novella series has been released at once.

I adore the Shadow world Erin has created. You know I like them dark and this one is definitely that, but don't worry...they have HEAs. Not only do I like the story, but I also love the way Erin writes. I've mentioned this many times, but Erin's novellas are the standard I measure all novellas too. You really do get a complete novel experience in 100 pages (give or take). I'll stop gushing now, but I did warn  you I was a fangirl...

The four Shadow Touch novellas are one continuous story. It is fast moving, action packed with a dark edge. The romance is sexy, dangerous and passionate. Cam and Ellie are naive about the Shadow world in the beginning, but they both get pulled in and changed (for the better? Not saying). While dealing with their own issues there is the threat of the Mages. Segue (where Cam and Ellie work) is now at war with one of the Mage houses.

EXCERPT FROM RAGING DAWN BY COLLEEN GLEASON

“Max, this is a rare opportunity to catch Rastingard outside the protection of his home, and our plan was already in place before that letter was intercepted,” said Savina. “Understand this: I don’t merely want to stake Rastingard—though I wager I’ll have a better likelihood of getting close enough to do so than anyone else in this room. I also want to obtain all the documents from his safe. Including the letter about Macey, if he has it.”

Max went noticeably rigid at the sound of his daughter’s name. Was it true he hadn’t seen or spoken of her since his wife had been killed? That he refused any information about Macey, including her whereabouts? Savina couldn’t imagine her father doing such a thing to her. To himself. He would have died—he did die—before cutting her out of his life.

“Aside from the obvious—I refer to your personal, er, attributes,” he said, flapping a hand vaguely in her direction, “what makes you believe he’ll bite? Pun most definitely intended.”

“That’s what I’ve been doing for the last six months—trying to create this opportunity. Alexander Purcell, who is the darling of the Tutela, already knows me—or at least, knows what I want him to know. I’ve created and cultivated a persona—that of a celebrated lady adventure photographer from Cairo high society—designed to attract his attention. We’ve crossed paths more than once already, and I’ve made certain to engage him. He’ll be delighted to continue our acquaintance on his own turf,” she said with a wry smile. “I have no doubt of it. He’s already invited me to visit him at his home in London. I’m certain he’ll be delighted when I arrive at his house party at Crenshaw Hall. With…”

She looked at Max appraisingly, then nodded. “Yes, with my chauffeur in tow. Or perhaps…perhaps you could be my assistant. Handle all of the grunt work, carrying around my photography equipment, setting it up, that sort of thing. That would be fitting, Mr. Denton, in light of your considerable Venatorial strength, and it would give you the opportunity to mingle with the—what do they call it in England? The downstairs people? The servants?”

It was all she could do to keep a straight face at the expressions crisscrossing his. There was shock, affront, fury, and then at the end, disdain. Not even a flicker of appreciation for her forethought and planning. Not even a glimmer of levity.

“You’re quite amusing, Miss Eleiasa. But I am not about to be anyone’s assistant. Or partner. And certainly not a bloody serv—”

“You’re Max Denton. Every vampire in the world and most every member of the Tutela knows who you are and what you look like, thanks to the wonders of photography. Surely you don’t think you can waltz into an English country house and move about as you like without being noticed or detected. Especially with a stake as itchy as yours.”

“She’s right, Max,” Bellitano said. His voice sounded strained, and Savina looked at him, unable to tell whether he was choking back laughter or battling concern about infuriating the celebrated Venator. “You’d have to go in disguise anyway. Savina’s already got an entrée into Purcell’s residence of her own making, and you wouldn’t attract undue attention if you were—er—overshadowed by her.”

“You could be my mute servant,” she said, knowing her eyes danced with delight. “Who doesn’t understand English. Wear a fez and grow a beard and mustache—surely you could manage that in the next four or five days, couldn’t you? At least something to cover your face?—and wear traditional clothing to hide those impressive muscles of yours. Your skin is dark enough to pass as an Egyptian, or at least a half-blood one like me, and—” Her voice quivered and she probably would have lost control of it if the door to the study hadn’t swung open.

A wave of warmth and calm came into the room as its occupants stood to greet Wayren. She smiled at them and stepped inside.

“Thank you for joining us,” said Bellitano as the willowy blond woman gestured for them all to sit. “I wasn’t certain whether you would be here.”

“I felt it necessary, all things considered.” Her pale blue eyes settled on Max. “It’s good to see you.”

Savina found that interesting. Had he avoided even Wayren over the last ten years as well?

When those steady, calm eyes turned to her, Savina found herself prickling with something warm and lively. She very nearly held her breath, for though she’d met Wayren briefly over the years, she’d never been in a private meeting like this with the mysterious librarian—or whatever she was. Definitely something not simply human, or perhaps even mortal.

“You’ve been preparing for this opportunity for some time,” said Wayren. “Much planning and care have gone into this mission.”

As the older woman held her eyes, knowledge shimmered therein. Savina realized that somehow Wayren knew or suspected her ulterior motive. Her true reason for befriending Alexander Purcell and painstakingly stalking him. Was she giving her blessing? Or sending a quiet warning?

“I hope all goes as you intend,” Wayren added, then shifted her gaze from Savina. She seated herself behind the desk, arranging her long, medieval skirts neatly and sliding a slender braid over her shoulder. “Max, you must admit Savina’s plan is well thought out. And Bellitano—” she smiled warmly at the acting summa “—is correct in saying that you would not only be immediately recognized, but could jeopardize this mission. Surely you don’t wish to take the chance of that letter getting into Rastingard’s hands—or finding its way to Nicholas Iscariot.”

Max’s jaw shifted from side to side under the collective stare of his companions. He pursed his lips in distaste, frowned, and then, through gritted teeth, said, “Fine. Servant it is. But I refuse to be mute.”

Book Review (sort of): Darkness Falls by Erin Kellison

Darkness Falls is part of the Dark and Deadly: Eight Bad Boys of Paranormal Romance book bundle which you can get for only $.99!

This isn't an 'official' review because I was involved in the editing of this novella. But if you've read any of my reviews of Erin Kellison's work you know I am a big fangirl of all of her Shadow books. Also, I think she is one of the best novella writers out there. She gives a full novel experience in every one of her novellas with the perfect mix of PNR and UF.

In urban fantasy an author creates a world, I guess you can call it their play ground. Once the mainframe of that world is established all they have to do is let their characters out to play. Creating a unique and fascinating playground is what will lure the reader to play along too.

The Reveler Novella Series is a dark, dangerous and thrilling place to go. I love the whole idea behind Rêve's, a place where people go to share an artificial dream and anytime you start playing with people's minds you know there will be bad guys looking to exploit it. Only there are things in the Dreamwaters that can't be controlled.

Darkness Falls is the first in the series and lays down the foundation of the world building. There is also a romance with a conclusion between the main characters just like any full PNR novel and you also meet the couple that will be the subject of the next story.

Loved this story and I can tell you the next book, Lay Me Down (releasing May 6), is even better as we learn more about the darkside of Rêve as well as Jordan's sister Maisie and the bane of her existence Steve Coll.

EXCERPT FROM ROGUE’S PASSION BY LAURIE LONDON
A man in a leather coat stood in what used to be the doorway. He was tall. And big. At least six-three or four, with broad, powerful shoulders. A once-black T-shirt, now covered in dust, stretched tightly across his well-defined chest. Low-slung jeans with a studded leather belt and chain accentuated his narrow hips. He was dressed like an outlaw from a motorcycle gang.

He was also favoring one leg and cradling his arm.

Without thinking of the consequences, Olivia flew to his side and righted an overturned chair. “Here. Sit.”

When she helped him into the seat, her hand inadvertently brushed his. Before she jerked it away, a visual list of his injuries rolled like movie credits in her head. Concussion but no head trauma, broken clavicle and leg, cracked ribs, torn meniscus, multiple contusions.

“No. I…can’t.” He had a strange accent. One she’d never heard before. “Need to…find my dog.”

She blinked once, confused, and then she remembered the dog she’d seen before the explosion. “He’s yours?”

The man brightened. “Is he here?”

“No, I saw him a few minutes before all this happened.”

His face fell and he started to push himself up.

“Hold on,” she said. “What are you doing?”

“Got…to…find…him.”

It was strange to see such a man looking so vulnerable. Because his injuries weren’t life-threatening, she’d be able to heal them fairly quickly, though. “You’re not going anywhere like this. Not until I can—”

As soon as she bent down to kneel in front of him, her mother’s admonitions rang in her head. What the hell am I doing? She pulled her hands back as if she’d just burned them. She couldn’t let anyone, especially a stranger, know what she was capable of. It wasn’t like he was dying, she reasoned. It would be a different story if he were. “I’m sure he’ll turn up.”

He was studying her a little too intently, and she got the distinct impression it wasn’t because he didn’t believe what she’d said about his dog.

“Wait here,” she ordered, standing up quickly. “I’ll let someone know you need an ambulance.”

“No,” he said vehemently. “No ambulances.” He sure didn’t sound confused anymore.

Unruly dark hair, which included a few thin braids, hung over his brow, reminding her of the wild stallions in the horse books she’d read as a kid. His features were chiseled, his jaw square and strong. His nose, though straight, had a bump on the bridge as if it had been broken once or twice. Not tonight, but earlier. And his eyes…God, those eyes.

They were almost otherworldly.

Framed with thick lashes a girl would kill for, the steely-gray of his irises glimmered in the glare of the aid cars’ lights as if they were backlit. Even though he was hurt, she found him rugged, powerful, and utterly beautiful.

“I saw you here…earlier.”

He had to be confused, because if he’d been in, she’d have remembered him. He wasn’t the sort of man she’d ever forget. “Oh really?” she asked, humoring him.

“You gave him…water. Thank you.”

“You did see me,” she said, a little startled. She narrowed her eyes, trying to think of where he could’ve been. “Were you…?”

“Across the street,” he finished. “At the club.” His voice had a rough, hardened edge, which she found oddly soothing. “Are you okay?” he asked, looking around the rubble of the wine shop.

No, she wasn’t okay. She was shaken up, freaked out, and really, really scared. But at least she was alive. Unlike her boss.

“I was trapped downstairs in the wine cellar when it happened. I just got out.”

“You’re not injured, lass?”

Lass? Is he visiting from Scotland or something?

His concern for her despite the fact that he was in much worse shape struck an unexpected chord. “I’m…I’m fine. Really. Please, let me get you some help.”

“No. No help for me,” he repeated. “But my dog…”

He grabbed the back of the chair and tried to push himself to a standing position.

“Hold on.” She held up her hands but didn’t touch him. She didn’t want to see another laundry list of his injuries again. And once she made contact with an injured person, it was hard not to heal them. “You’re in no shape to go anywhere. What’s your name?” she asked, trying to distract him.

“Asher,” he groaned. “But I must leave.”

“Well, Asher, I’m Olivia, and you really need to take it easy. You’ve got a list of injuries a mile long. And…I mean…” She tried to backpedal. “You seem like you’re hurt pretty badly. You know, just from how you look.” Oh man, she needed to just stop talking or she was going to dig herself into a deeper hole. Of course he looked injured. Any regular person without a Talent could see that. She didn’t need to be acting so guilty.

He opened his mouth, probably to protest, but just then, a man in a reflective orange vest appeared in the doorway.

“Hey, if you’re not hurt, I could really use your help out here.”

She looked at Asher. “I’m not, but he needs—”

Asher’s eyes turned concrete gray. There was a tiny, yet deliberate shake of his head. I’m fine, he mouthed.

Okay. That’s bizarre.

He clearly didn’t want any medical treatment, but given how hurt she knew he was, it didn’t make sense. Maybe he had an aversion to needles or something. If the tables were turned and she was the one with all those injuries, she’d totally go and— No, wait. She wouldn’t be excited to go to the hospital, either. The authorities might find out about her.

She chewed on her bottom lip. Part of her wanted to go out and help, but the rest of her wanted to get as far away as possible. Out there, she’d be surrounded by injured and suffering people. She didn’t know if she’d be able to resist using her abilities. And if someone were dying…

The aid worker clapped his hands. “Come on. Let’s go. You’re wasting time.”

Asher looked at her, a curious expression on his face. “If you’re concerned about me, I’m fine. Just a little shaken up.”

She had no idea why he was lying about being hurt or why he didn’t want any help, but one thing was certain. This handsome stranger was hiding a few secrets of his own.
