Book Review: Light My Fire (Dragon Kin #7) by G.A. Aiken

Light My Fire (Dragon Kin #7)

The trouble with humans is that they're far too sensitive. Forget you put a woman in the local jail for a few months--and she takes it so personally! And yet she is the one trying to assassinate the queen. And now I'm trapped with Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight…gods! That endless name!

But what am I to do? I am Celyn the Charming with direct orders from my queen to protect this unforgiving female.

Even more shocking, this unforgiving female is completely unimpressed by me. How is that even possible? But I know what I want and, for the moment, I want her. And I'm sure that she, like all females, will learn to adore me. How could she not when I am just so damn charming?

There are laugh out loud books and then there are G.A. Aiken books which fall into the gut busting, eye watering, laugh-so-hard-you-might-pee-on-yourself category.

She was supposed to assassinate the queen but Celyn the Charming not only stopped her but put her in jail for months! Why so long? The arrogant dragon forgot she was there! With Celyn hounding her every move, what is Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight supposed to do?

G.A. Aiken has a style that’s truly unique and completely addictive, but you have to have a warped sense of humor like I do. Or at least a love of sarcastic banter, rough and tumble sex scenes and childish dragons.

Celyn and Elina are explosive together in every way, they fight like children, both verbally and physically yet their sexual chemistry is undeniable. And incredibly destructive, a reader could get whiplash with how hot and cold they are with each other but what makes their relationship so darn addictive is their snarky competitiveness.

As a dragon, Celyn is naturally arrogant and proud yet he finds that he has to struggle to keep up with Elina who comes from a long line of Amazon like women who only see men as necessary evils to have children. It was just so freaking funny when Elina constantly would put Celyn’s entire gender through the racks by making simple observations. Of course, it would also lead to more laughs as Celyn tried to dispute her observations. It was refreshing to have the heroine of the story be the one to view the hero as nothing more than a means to scratch an itch. Celyn may have thought he was the alpha in their relationship but to be honest, it was really Elina who called the shots. Even though he knows she could be dangerous if he makes her angry, Celyn just can’t help poking at her and seeing how far he could push before she snaps, which is usually where I had to put Light My Fire down in order to catch my breath after laughing so much.

At about 493 pages, Light My Fire is a little lengthy but that’s common for a book by Aiken. It does provide readers with an adventurous storyline that’s part of a larger tale, chatty, snarky characters, a complex relationship and hot, erotic sex scenes. Basically, this book lived up to the expectations I had and have had since I picked up the first book in the series. It’s classic G.A. Aiken!

Though it’s part of a series, Light My Fire can be read alone but in my opinion, with so many connecting family lines and relationships, it might be a little confusing for new readers and some of the jokes might be lost on someone who isn’t familiar with previous characters and their stories. In general, G.A. Aiken’s stories aren’t for those who don’t enjoy erotic romance or difficult, independent women. I happen to enjoy both very much so this was yet another win by Aiken.

How to Drive a Dragon Crazy (Dragon Kin) by G.A. Aiken
Some things never go away, like vile enemies, bad ale, and annoying kin. But I thought I was finished with the one dragon I'd have done anything for: Eibhear the Blue, a big, gorgeous, blue-haired beast who thinks the world belongs to him. The world and, apparently, me. So if Eibhear wants to play the caring hero and travel into the most forsaken of Gods forsaken lands to protect the one woman who doesn't need it - namely me - I'll let him. Because while I'm trying to fulfill a ridiculous quest for a pushy god, I'm going to draw this over confident warlord much too close, rekindle his fires, and enjoy every minute of his delicious defeat...
