Cover Grabby Hands Syndrome: Holly Black Covers

Sometimes you run into a cover or series of covers that make you stop, bow down to the awesome and maybe drool and develop grabby-hands.

Today, I give you The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2)
by Holly Black

They have earned my Grabby-hands stamp of approval.

I have a thing for crown covers. And this one really grabbed my attention. The colors and the realism of the water splashing on the title...amazing composition. But wait! I started looking at other Holly Black covers and WTF!? Does she have a cover fairy on her pay role? Cause she has a ton of beautiful covers I've added below.
The Wicked King (The Folk of the Air #2)
by Holly Black

336 pages

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

Look at all this awesome!

Sheep Feature:Top 5 TV Shows We Wish Were Movies!

Top 5 TV Shows We Wish Were Movies

How many times have you wished a particular television show would develop into a movie? This happened with some fan favorites, including "The Simpsons," "The Addams Family," "Sex and the City," and "21 Jump Street." But there are plenty more we would like to see; here are the top five we think should be next on the big screen.

"Game of Thrones"
HBO scored big, again, with its medieval period piece "Game of Thrones." Based on George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice," the fantasy tells the story of warring families in the mythical Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The series follows the murders, betrayals, and backstabbing of the Stark and Baratheon families.

The scope and setting of the series is the perfect fodder for the big screen. Massive sets, impressive wardrobes, and enough scandal to please our baser instincts. It's also an epic tale, which means it could easily be turned into a big-screen trilogy, making fans and investors exceedingly happy.

"Homeland"
Showtime has a long list of successful original programming, some of which would be fantastic as major motion pictures. Their latest, "Homeland," is a high-action international spy thriller that pits a determined CIA agent (Claire Danes) with a loose grip on reality against a U.S. Marine-turned-congressman (Damian Lewis), who was just repatriated after being held captive by radical Muslim extremists for eight years.

The series, now in its second season, offers high-action and high-tension in every episode, and spent a great deal of its budget shooting in Virginia and Washington, D.C. for an authentic government feel, and Tel Aviv, Israel for a notable Middle East flavor.

We expect that the "Homeland" movie would rival similar big-budget espionage films, like "Syriana," "The Bourne Identity," and "Argo."

"Burn Notice"
Several years ago, USA Network made a commitment to delivering quality television entertainment. They scored big hits with shows like "Monk," "White Collar," "In Plain Sight," and "Burn Notice," which is now in its sixth successful season.

While technically an espionage-type program about a spy (Jeffery Donovan) who was outted by his own agency , it includes and lot of family-style warmth and mature humor, as well as high-action and high-tension. The series stars veteran actress Sharon Gless, international model and actress Gabrielle Anwar, and everyone's favorite likeable guy, Bruce Campbell.

The series infinitely benefited through the contributions of Creative Consultant Michael J. Wilson, a 30-year CIA veteran. He adds authenticity to the spy mentality, weaponry, and methods and means.
Already an international hit, airing in more than 60 countries, the series is supported by books, prequels, and a television movie. "Burn Notice" would work exceedingly well on the big screen with a bigger budget and several international filming locales.

"Boardwalk Empire"
There have been a number of films that successfully dealt with the issue of organized criminals and their exploits set in the alcohol prohibition period of the 1920s and '30s. The HBO's series, "Boardwalk Empire," handles the topic extremely well, casting Steve Buscemi as the real-life Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, a powerful New Jersey political figure with a dominating control of Atlantic City.

The series strength rests on its historical accuracy with the mixture of manufactured events that feel real. It's the perfect blend of historical fact and fiction and the deft cast, including Gretchen Mol, Bobby Cannavale, Vincent Piazza, and Jack Huston, hit the mark on even the littlest details.

On the big screen, "Boardwalk Empire" would sizzle with style and ambiance and many of the big name stars on the show have film-acting experience. This would help make for an even more legitimate telling of a time in our history when corruption was out in the open and the bad guys didn't really care who knew.

"The Walking Dead"
AMC has a lineup of excellent shows, including "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad," and the network struck gold again with its zombie apocalypse tale, "The Walking Dead."

In the pilot episode, Sheriff Deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awakes from a coma to find he's now living in a world filled with zombies. The show follows his journey with a group of friends and family in search of sanctuary from the flesh-seekers. The series was developed by Frank Darabont ("The Green Mile" and "The Salton Sea") and it's been consistently good since the opening scene.

There is plenty of graphic blood and violence, but it is tempered by the fact it's a highly accessible program on basic cable television. Sure, there are plenty of zombie movies, but this is one that would benefit from a big-budget and an "R" rating, so it could deal properly with the subject. It would also appeal to horror fans everywhere, as the comic book by the same name has a decent following.

Not everything on television translates to the big screen successfully, but we think these five would have a serious shot at box office success. Which of your favorite television shows would you like to see turned into a movie?

Guest Post: author Dodge Winston

Why I Use Fiction to Mirror Reality

Being an information junky and a writer too, I enjoy looking at things in a “big picture” perspective. Instead of being divided by multiple, micro-issues, I tend to look at how groupings of trends will effect mankind down the road when it comes to worldwide topics, such as globalization.

Today there are so many books, journals, and written resources, mired down in facts (depending upon who’s stats you believe), about issues that are extremely important to civilization, that there is little need to go out and research and write another bland report for sociologists, psychologists, and statisticians to pore over. The information studied can be fascinating but, unfortunately, it can also be quite dry and tiresome. Not only that, the points can be argued, the resources will be challenged, and the overall intent of the information often gets lost in partisan discussions morphing the data into a political soapbox. This is where the beauty of fiction comes in.

Fiction is an entirely different animal when it comes to getting a message across. I have said that intuition is often more reliable than media-branded fact. I am an intuitive person with perspectives of my own. Being an information junky along with the gift of intuition lends me the ability to see what I define as the “big picture” when it comes to the future of society. Am I futurist? I don’t call myself that. I’m more of a intuitive who sees challenges ahead. It is fiction that allows me to take data, mix it in my gut, and project a forecast if you will.

Fiction cannot be challenged. A thesis can and is, often. Fiction allows me to write from a purely creative side, seasoned with both personal experiences, the experiences of others, and hard data. With such ingredients at my fingertips, I can weave not just a tale, but a living world that mirrors our own. It is this weaving together that lends to not just some inherent truths but a powerful, visual foundation allowing readers to see how those truths of fiction apply to our current world and future generations.

I wrote the Drake Eldorado series. It is three novels that begin with the awakening of Drake’s consciousness, challenging his perspective on life and his role in it. The story traverses his internal struggles (terrifying, personal experiences) as he observes particular choices people make that are acceptable by large swaths of our population. Are they the right choices? What are the ramifications to society as a whole if this particular path is continued? These are the struggles that rock Drake’s world – the tugging of one side of the psyche from the other which can have disastrous effects. Is he strong enough to deal with not just his own “demons” but those that plague mankind? Here is the power of fiction at its finest in my opinion. To take a reader into a world where the spin is actually him or herself looking into their own reflection and making a change in their reality because they were able to identify with the road Drake traveled.

Clearly the Drake Eldorado series is much more than how one man may or may not overcome his own shortcomings. It is that piecing together of a world, its characters, raw emotions and consequences, and having it ride a story that reflects us and society as a whole that stokes my fire to create and write. Fiction is the written word that can be man’s best friend or his worst enemy depending on why it is utilized. It is that powerful. Not only do we see it in classic novels but we also see the abuse of it in commercialism. Authors often use fiction to convey a message within a story. Marketers and copy writers will use fiction to sell a product. Political ideologues and activists will use fiction to steer society in a particular direction. There is no limit on the uses of fiction. And it is that unlimited potential that also mirrors the unlimited potential of humanity.

Fiction comes from the self (and the world surrounding the self) as projected onto paper. This is why fiction novels sell so much. Readers often identify with aspects of the characters they read about. It is that connection, that cohesive intuition of knowing the truth within those characters that ultimately mirrors the reader, making him or her turn to the next page (when done right).

I relish the use of fiction to not only pass on a similar world but to incite curiosity, wonder, fear, and questions for the self. To make the reader think outside the box and then look back inside, armed with a different perspective, is like having a good friend tell you something that you don’t want to hear but something that you need to hear. That is glorious! That is using fiction to mirror reality!

Some of the things he enjoys are anime, graphic novels, mixed martial arts (MMA), well-made movies (Sin City, 300, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars saga), unique authors (Robert E. Howard, Karl Edward Wagner, James Patterson), topics related to globalization (Jeremy Rifkin, Jagdish Bhagwati) and anti-globalization too. He is a creator at heart, an information junky and someone who thoroughly enjoys fiction and how it can mirror reality.

Dodge is married, has two children, is considering getting a dog for the family, and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
