Book Review: Dane's Mark (A Novel of the Breeds Book 33) By Lora Leigh

Releasing tomorrow!

Dane's Mark (A Novel of the Breeds Book 33)
By Lora Leigh
Feb 6, 2024
Genre: paranormal romance
Publisher: Berkley
A new kind of Breed is faced with what happens when destiny and desire collide in the latest novel in the highly charged series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh.

A decade ago Katy Chavos was a proud misfit who had her heart broken, crushed by a man who drew her close with one breath and pulled away the next. He left a mark she’s done everything in her power to erase. But when Katy’s job brings her back to the hometown she couldn’t wait to escape, seeing Dane again awakens something inside her that won’t be tamed....

Dane Vanderale isn’t like other Breeds. As a hybrid he’s stronger, more primal, and more determined to hide it. He’s also certain that Katy is not his mate—not that that stops him from wanting her with every part of his soul. He knows he hurt her deeply and he intends to make things right, but she is dead set on keeping him at arm’s length.

Despite their painful history, Katy can’t deny the intense attraction she still feels for Dane. And before long, it will be impossible for either to deny the truth that has been in front of them all along....

I may have started this read a little behind the 8 ball. With 32 books already in this series it may have made sense for me to read the first installment but I can see why Lora Leigh has become a hit with this series!

It took me a minute to acclimate to the world of “Breeds” but the story did keep me interested even while I gained my footing. The romantic buildup was immediately intriguing even as I told myself there must be a little history I was not privy to.

Leigh did an excellent job of building my interest and playing on my emotions and curiosity even during the times I was getting frustrated by the pull and push between the characters. Loved Katy’s character, frustrated with Dane’s thought patterns and developed heart strings for supporting characters.

I enjoyed this as a stand alone read but now my discovery of Leigh’s writing and her world of “Breeds” have me wanting to pick up book one of the series! If you are already a fan…don’t miss this one.

Book Review: Wake A Sleeping Tiger (Breeds #31) by Lora Leigh

by Lora Leigh
March 21st 2017 by Berkley
352 pages
On a moonless Navajo night, the recessed Bengal Breed known only as Judd became Cullen Maverick, grandson to one of the Chiefs of the Six Tribes of the Native Americans.

Bengal genetics, usually so fierce as to be labeled primal, was recessed so deep inside Judd that no hint of it can be found. A phenomena so rare it’s been notated only a few times. And there’s no way, it’s believed, to force those genetics free once they’ve disappeared past the genetic level.

Now, as commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Division in Window Rock, New Mexico, Cullen leads his six agents in protecting the treasures of the Navajo Tribes by ensuring they remain safely in Navajo possession.

Added to this mix is none other than the delicate Window Rock police detective determined to stick her pretty little nose in his business.

And once Cullen realized the animosity that keeps flaming between them is far more than he imagined, then the Primal Breed that’s lurked inside him comes out to play. And when that beast decides to make itself known, Cullen suddenly remembers all the reasons it was better off sleeping.

Cullen is a Breed but doesn't have all the abilities that other Breed's have. Cullen is the commander of the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency and works with Chelsea who he has feelings for but won't acknowledge them. Cullen and his twin brother, Graeme were experimented on when they were both children. While his brother's inner animal came out and turned out to be a monster, Cullen's animal has never come to the surface.

Chelsea works with Cullen in the Navajo Covert Law Enforcement Agency but isn't challenged enough by her boss, Cullen. She's trained and can take care of herself but Cullen doesn't let her go out and use any of her training because he doesn't want her to get hurt which is why she quits her job. It's when Chelsea isn't around as much that Cullen realizes how much he missed her and cares about her.

The story starts out slow and doesn't really pick up until more than half way through the book. While there are a lot of things going on in this story including a kidnapping, someone getting shot and trying to figure out who betrayed the main characters, the story just didn't hold my attention all that well. I've been reading this series for quite a while and for the most part I've liked most of the other books but the story line for this one just didn't hold my attention the way others in this series have.

This story seemed more about the betrayal of trust, kidnapping and the drama behind Cullen's wife that passed away instead of the romance between Cullen and Chelsea and how they deal with the mating heat.

The best parts of this book weren't even about the two main characters but about Graeme and what monster or Primal he turns into when he gets really angry. So while I'll continue to read this series, this book wasn't as enjoyable as some of the others I've read.

I give this book 3 Sheep

Book Review: Bengal's Quest (Breeds #30) by Lora Leigh

by Lora Leigh
June 23, 2015
Publisher: Berkley
Hardcover, 352 pagesHe was a shadow, ever shifting and insinuating, able to blend in everywhere and anywhere. The elusive ideal conceived and created by the Genetics Council, he went by just as many names as he had identities—the last one being Gideon.

Now calling himself Graeme, he hides in plain sight, terrifyingly close to his goal. A rogue Bengal Breed, he has loyalties to no one but himself. And he has a need for vengeance that surges hot and swift through his veins.

Graeme plans to exact an extreme and ruthless vendetta against those who wronged him—Breed and human alike. All will suffer his wrath: those who created him, those who pretended to love him, and those who betrayed him.

That includes the one at the center of it all: a seductive, enigmatic woman helpless against the man whose desire is just as desperate as his need to destroy.

And he’s on her scent…

Saved from death as an infant and protected and watched over by Gideon, or “G” as she called him, Cat worshiped him until after he was wounded and his brother, Judd used her blood in transfusion to save Gideon’s life. After that, he left them, or so she thought. Years after hers, Judd’s and her Breed friend, Honor’s escape from the lab, Cat now lives in a house by the Breed sanctuary. She meets Graeme, but though he smells of a Lion Breed and looks somewhat different, she knows he is her Gideon, now a brilliant Rogue Bengal Breed, with only loyalty to himself and a need for vengeance. Between the two of them is a desire so potent that though they deny it on the outside, beneath, they cannot and are drawn to each other.

Once again, Ms. Leigh brings us a flawed seductive Breed and a woman to deny him the Mating urge between them. A story that is hot as a fire that not even firefighters can put out, this dance of erotic passion flames to a promise delivered well.

I give Bengal’s Quest 5 erotic sheep

Book Review: Hot Alphas (Wounded Warriors #3) by Lora Leigh, Laurelin McGee, Shiloh Walker, Kate Douglas

Hot Alphas (Wounded Warriors #3)
by Lora Leigh, Laurelin McGee, Shiloh Walker, Kate Douglas
Paperback, 368 pages
May 19th 2015 by St. Martin's Griffin
In Erin’s Kiss by Lora Leigh, ex-Marine Turk has become Erin’s sworn protector. The consistent target of her CIA-operative brother’s deadly foes, Turk is the only port Erin has to cling to in a storm. He promised her brother long ago never to touch her—but how can he resist a woman who aches to be with him as much as he burns for her?

In misTaken by Laurelin McGee, Jaylene Kim is a strong independent woman whose feminist values run deep. Even though attractive men are her weakness the last thing she wants is one telling her what to do. Until she meets her mysterious new neighbor. He makes her realize that you can still be strong and relinquish control . . . in the bedroom. But as their passion consumes them both Jaylene isn't so sure he is who he says he is.

In Burn for Me by Shiloh Walker, Tate longs to spend his nights with Ali, a woman he’s loved for years. But while Ali’s heart pines to be with Tate, her head has reservations. Ali knows that Tate has never forgiven his father for the fight he had with his mother right before she left the house—and was never heard from again. Tate's unresolved anger is a force to be reckoned with . . . but the heat that blazes between them is undeniable. Now both Tate and Ali are left to wonder: Can love really conquer all?

In Tangled by Kate Douglas, Nate shows up to work at Tangled Vineyards ready to do all the things he loves best—work with his hands, grow the grapes, and craft award-winning, full-bodied wines. But when something better comes along in the form of Cassie, the winemaker and former owner of the vineyard, Nate becomes completely love-drunk. Getting involved with Tangled’s number-one mixologist is a bad way to start off a new job, but with Cassie as a constant temptation, Nate doesn’t stand a chance.

I don’t read a lot of contemporary romances because they don’t appeal to me, unless they are gay romances. Can’t tell you why either…they just don’t. But every once in a while I find one, so when I was given the opportunity to review Hot Alphas I thought Hey, I love alphas and I’ve never read anything by these four authors. Win-win! But it was not to be…

Erin’s Kiss- This was your basic troupey romance. Big-alpha-Special-Forces-type group of guys and one little bitty feisty woman bringing one of the men to his knees. In this story everyone was barely holding in their anger the whole time. Grrrr….Arrrrg! Internal thoughts were too repetitive. I know lots of people enjoy the overboard Grrr…sex stuff, but this just wasn’t for me.

misTaken- And yes, this is how the title is spelled, which is clever. But I didn’t care for this story either. It went overboard on the character's personalities. One big feminist cliché after another. It seems the author might have intentionally made the heroine extreme to give the story a silly sort of humor. I just couldn’t buy it. So, again, not my cup of tea.

Burn for Me- I enjoyed this story a little better. I liked the story line, but I think having all the events happen is such a short story made it hard to emotionally connect to the characters and I didn’t like the emotional abuse the heroine endured until the meathead got his s*** together. Maybe if there weren’t kids involved. Again, not my type of story.

Tangled- Win! This story redeemed the whole anthology for me. The mystery, action and romance were well paced within the confines of the short length. Most of the conflict came from outside forces and the conflict between the hero/heroine was more realistic and kind of sweet. It was refreshing to see the other men in the story were good guys too, except the bad guy of course. There was no crazy contrived angst. Grab a glass; you will savor the romance and be surprised by hints of mystery and suspense.

You should take my opinion of the first three stories with a grain of salt, remembering my bias of contemporary romance. All four stories are completely different so if you are looking for variety this one could make you happy.

Overall I give this anthology 2 Sheep

Book Tour: Lora Leigh's Rule Breaker (Breeds #29) + giveaway

Rule Breaker (Breeds #29)
by Lora Leigh
Lion Breed, Rule Breaker had just a few rules he didn't break. Not for anything. Not for anyone.

#1. Never have sex with a woman outside his own subspecies, especially a human woman.

#2. Never, at any time, accept a mission concerning a female when Jonas Wyatt stinks of a lie.

#3. Run don't walk, skip or stumble. Run, hell for leather away from any female, human or breed, when his desire for her appears, in any way, to have so much as a single sign of Mating Heat.

Now, the woman believes he's mated, is too helpless, to fun loving and too full of life to ever be able to protect herself, let alone aide him in protecting her.

If the damned animal inside him insisted on a mate, then why pick the woman it did? One that could be struck out at, at any time?

But, what he suspected was a mating, may not be. No swollen glands? No heat? Just his animal instincts rioting, pacing, irritated whenever he's away from her.

Okay, he could handle that.

What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the breeds when Jonas learns she's possibly been working against them.

Sheep Book Review: Stygian's Honor

Stygian's Honor, by author Lora Leigh, is the 27th edition in the Breeds saga. When you have a storyline that's been going for this long, you have to bring something new to the table every book or you're going to loose your audience. This is the third book in the series that I've read, and unfortunately I'm bored already! How are the long term fans staying with this?! I have no idea.

Plot:
Window Rock, Arizona, is the last known location of Honor Roberts, who vanished when she was just thirteen. It was her only sanctuary from the Breed research that would surely have ended in her death—one such insidious experiment should, indeed, have killed her. That she lived is both a miracle—and a great mystery.

Stygian’s mission is to find Honor Roberts, no matter the cost. Now, with the help of Liza Johnson, assistant to the chief of the Navajo Nation, he is closer than ever to his goal. But will the discovery of Honor Roberts mean the destruction of the mating heat that has developed between Stygian and Liza?

After the last installment in this series, Law's Justice, I should have known better, BUT like the sucker I am I gave this writer another chance. This story was so hard to get into, and that's if you can even say there was a story to be found here. This story had so few redeeming qualities about either of our lead pair, which only added to the frustration of the experience. Stygian is overbearing, controlling, angry all the time, growling left and right, plus let's not forget the "hissy fits" he has over and over, all of which is topped with being pushy beyond belief. Good undead lord, this man needs some serious counseling! Liza tells the guy over and over NOT to push his way of doing things into her life but what does he do? He pushes. Again and again, the guy won't give her even a second to breath. I found that particularly irritating. Plus Liza's character lacked so much power despite supposedly being some undercover agent with battle skills. Liza must have missed a few courses at the Navajo training camp.

It's not often I'll say this next part so prepare yourself now: this story had too much sex. Yup, I said it. Anything of value in the plot is overshadowed by the constant sex going on between these two, which happens at the most random times. But low and behold they always seem to find a bed! Blah. I actually skipped over these parts. Me. Skipping over the romance. *hangs head* That's how much there was.

Leigh also really needs to get an editor. There were so many misspellings it was positively flabbergasting and she used the wrong word so often that I wanted to throw a dictionary at her. Look, I've got an editor for a reason and I just write the review. If I had to write a whole book Kalpar would first of all kill me, but you can bet your booty I'd have multiple people checking that puppy over for any and every little thing.

The only saving grace here were the parts with finding out who Honor Roberts really is, why the bad guys wanted to kill her, is she still alive, and when will Giedon find his mate. That was it. Sure more building for the next book and missing pieces of the puzzle are clearly stepping in to try and fit but at this point I don't care. When everyone else who's missing gets together then maybe I'll read that book. But all this rehash over and over with mating heat men and ladies who lack a backbone are ticking me off. This book and frankly the series is not for me.

Sheep Book Review: Lawe's Justice by Lora Leigh

Lawe's Justice, by author Lora Leigh, is the 26th book in the ongoing Breeds series. This story left me with conflicted emotions but the bottom line is, this is not the author's best work.

Plot:
Diane Broen's lived to protect her younger sister Rachel from harm. But now that Rachel has been mated off, Diane's occupied herself with less fulfilling tasks at the Genetics Council--until she's paired with a new team member, a Breed male notorious for his attitude, and a touch that makes her recoil.

Lawe isn't thrilled with her either. A lion at heart, he prefers a lair of solitude. When it comes to females, he'd rather snarl than purr. And while fate may have paired them to fight on the same team, neither is willing to admit to the obvious: the mating heat between them is positively incinerating.

It's only when danger threatens that they make a hotter-than-hell connection--one so explosive it could destroy them. Or, as providence reveals, bind them together, forever.

With a series that's been for the most part pretty good thus far, it's very surprising to find the latest edition not fulfilling at all. It felt to me like the author was stretching plots thin when she had a vast array of deeply rich characters to utilize. Diane and Lawe came across as lack luster and forced, their romance scenes were the only thing that entertained me, but even those felt dragged out to the point of pain. If you like some extremely intense romance mixed with vulgar language you'll get into these hot spots, but for me several of these encounters became just too much.

The whole build up of the story is Diane trying to find some info on her sister's newborn baby who was injected with some form of mutant serum. Although, would being a mutant be so bad?Food for thought folks. Diane's out tracking down a couple folks that may have some answers, but by the end nothing happens, no one is found and nothing is resolved. Meanwhile you have Diane constantly standing up for herself against her Breed mate, Lawe. He's got a messed up past sure, protective to the core great, but so much emphasis is placed on Diane talking about how much of a mercenary she is but we don't really read about her kicking much butt. It's no wonder Lawe has no faith in her skill to stay alive and PS he saved her from a Syrian prison the year before! Ugh. I think music Icon Elvis stated it best, I would have liked to experience her badass fighting skills first-hand rather then hear about them. "Little less talk and a lot more action!"

This book was mainly focused on the past and catching readers up on what's been going on. Unfortunately the story spends so much time doing review sessions no progress is made on the overall story. A feral Breed male who everyone is trying to track down actually comes across as a very nice guy. Sure he shamelessly tortures and brutally kills folk, but only the bad scientists who ran experiments on him and more of his kind. You really feel for the guy and start wonder why they don't just leave him alone! Or at least hire him as the muscle, sometimes psychos are just misunderstood. Give the guy a hug and let's call it a day.

The first couple chapters of Lawe's Justice were the strongest by far, the rest comes down to either dirty porn sex or filler. Our side characters Rule and Thor make more of an interesting story then the main couple, plus their dialog was just more enjoyable. This leaves on the fence because possibly missing this story could leave folks even more in the dark for Stygian's Honor coming out June of this year. So....if you like this series maybe buckle down and just trudge through it.

Navarro's Promise, Bad Touch song taken to heart

Navarro's Promise, by author Lora Leigh, is the 24th novel in her ongoing Breeds series. This book could be summed up as sex, sex, and more sex. Was there a storyline or a plot in here at all? Because if there was I totally missed it. The raging sex encompassed the whole book to the point I thought I was going into heat reading this thing. lol Wow! I like some nice details but this was a bit too much for me. It may be tagged as PNR but most definitely is an Erotica novel.

Plot:
The breed guaranteed Mica no harm would come to her, but they never allowed for her sensual fascination with Navarro or his unstoppable need to claim her as his mate in both body and soul. All her life Micah has grown up with the Breeds and fantasized about Navarro Blaine. They haven’t spent much time together, but they’re thrown into proximity when her life is suddenly in danger. Now the two of them can no longer deny their attraction, but what will happen when Micah tries to resist the mating process? Will they find happiness, or will stubborn pride get in the way?

I would like to know who the heck proofread and edited this book?! It was missing a coherent plot, and actual pages are missing from the ending. I hate to spoil this for anyone and if you would like to read the book for yourself please stop reading now, but I've got to talk about these details. Mica and Navarro are the main characters in this latest book but I had no idea why they were fighting each other and none of their issues even got resolved by the end. The main focus of the story was sex. The rest of the pages were kinda just thrown in the air and arranged as they landed, serving as mere breathers between sex scenes.

The book opens well with Mica almost being killed and Navarro coming to her rescue. Severely battered and bruised Mica is horribly shaken but ends up making out with him not less then an hour later. Okay...well I got past that to the next big scene. A madman breaks out of his "secure" cell and tackles her, but why? The book never said why he picked her. Again this story completely ignores that character have reasons for their actions rather than just doing whatever because the plot told them so. Anyway, I continue on with the book and the humping starts. And the humping goes on and on until the very end with little to no transition. Seriously, one second she is making out with Navarro in the medical bay hallway and the next she is in her bed. Literally the jump was like that. *snaps fingers* As far as I know, he can't teleport. There was no transition, nothing saying they walked home, no time travel or hopping into a golf cart. Nothing. Then all of a sudden the same madman gets out of his cell again and is lurking about in her room. What?! Where the heck did he come from? What the hell is going on? So confusing.

Leigh is a great writer and I don't want her to be judged by this book alone. Something went really wrong here and I hope it wasn't her fault that this book lacked a plot, motivation, or anything resembling common sense. Editors need to do a much better job than this. It's important to check your books over and over before you send them out for people to buy. I would really like a free coupon for another book at this point but I know that may not happen.
