Sheep Book Review: Otherkin by Nina Berry

Otherkin, by author Nina Berry, is her debut YA Paranormal novel. Who knew shifters could be so fun? I'm all over this new series and could not put it down!

Plot:
I thought I knew myself. Then I met Caleb.
Dez is a good girl who does as she’s told and tries not to be noticed. Then she rescues a boy from a cage, and he tells her secrets about herself. Now inside her burns a darkness that will transform her.
Everything is about to change -- and neither Caleb, nor the Otherkin, nor those who hunt them are prepared for what Dez will unleash.

It's a wide known fact I am typically not a fan of YA because of the angst! Oh undead gods save me from that teenage angst! (Kalpar: Wait until your own kid's a teenager.) Otherkin takes the reader well out of the angst realm and into the world of the last remaining shifters! Hunted mercilessly by a group of radical zealots, the shifters have gone almost completely into hiding. Our leading lady Dez was absolutely unique in all the right ways. Abandoned as an infant and adopted by wonderful parents this young lady has grown up with no knowledge about her genetic makeup. It's a fun ride discovering all the possibilities along with her, and I think that's the best thing the author could have done here. You discover along with her, and you sympathize along the way.

With bad guys out to get her and a new friendship with young hottie Caleb, who's got some gifts of his own, Dez sets out to get the training and history she so desperately needs. A wolf, bear, bird, and rat walk into a summer camp...and from here the antics continue. Generations of tradition and hate are uphill battles that Dez is constantly trying to win, but can others like her actually accept the newcomer? Does anyone care to stand up and fight? You have to read it and find out! Along the way you will laugh and be entertained till your teeth hurt.

The reader has no idea what will happen next with twists and turns throwing a wrench into each new scenario. Small downside, just a little hokey in parts during the camp's "mystical" leader, but nothing that can't be fine tunned. Magic, action, adventure, and a hard lesson in love bring Otherkin to the top of my reading list.

I'm extremely excited to continue this journey and see where it may lead! And I hope the author takes things to the next level and out of the YA world!

  1. I've had my eye on this book for a while now. I am the same as you. I can't stomach a lot of YA books because of the angst. I will definitely have to check this out now.
