Broderick McNaughton woke with a raging headache, dry mouth, and what felt like hot bands around his wrists. What the fuck?

He didn’t remember getting this drunk. He remembered hanging out at Liam’s bar for a while then heading to the fight club with Spike. Spike was a refreshing guy to be with—he didn’t talk a lot, wasn’t noticeably crazy, and didn’t expect you to speak if there was nothing important to say.

Spike could also kick ass in the fight ring and go out for pizza. Broderick had joined him for the pizza tonight—anything to keep from heading home to his three pain-in-the-ass younger brothers, a half-feral Shifter Feline, and the half-feral’s very protective human mate.

After he’d said good night to Spike, Broderick had dropped in on Sean Morrissey, the Shiftertown’s Guardian, to report on ongoing tracker business. He’d sat with Sean on his back porch a while, watching Sean cuddle his sleeping cub on his lap.

Somewhere between saying good night to Sean and heading home across the dark common yards behind Shifter houses, Broderick had lost consciousness.

The bands around his wrists were real—heavy-duty metal handcuffs. Strong enough for a Shifter, tight enough that even if he shifted to wolf, he wouldn’t be able to slip his big paws out.

Broderick couldn’t see and could barely breathe, because there was a bag over his head, its drawstring tight around his throat.

What the holy fuck?

Broderick’s first instinct was to struggle, to break out of his restraints no matter how strong and kill whoever had done this. His second instinct told him to shut up and lie still and figure out where he was. No sense busting out of the cuffs and bag to find five guys with machine guns waiting for him. Cunning was sometimes the better part of valor.

Broderick remained motionless. He might not be able to see, but he could hear and he could scent, which for a Shifter, were more important senses at times like these.

He smelled humans, not in the room with him, but definitely nearby. His hackles rose. He doubted these humans were police or Shifter Bureau’s mighty patrollers—they’d have put him into a sterilized cage, not bothering with the head bag. When he woke, a Shifter Bureau worker with a clipboard would explain why they’d decided to round him up, cage him, and terminate him.

So, if he hadn’t been caught by Shifter Bureau or police, that left Shifter hunters.

Even as these thoughts formed, Broderick had his doubts. Hunters would have also stuck him into a cage or simply shot him. Besides, no way human hunters could have sneaked into Shiftertown. It was too well guarded by Shiftertown’s trackers, of which Broderick was one.

Then who?

He felt cold stone under his body, smelled musty, dank air behind the head bag. Floorboards creaked, but overhead. He also smelled damp lint and laundry detergent, which meant a washing machine and dryer nearby. Conclusion—he was in somebody’s basement.

Humans lived in this house, not Shifters. So again—what the fuck?

He smelled another odor, one of warm plastic, and he heard a hum of electronics. Interesting.

Broderick should have said screw it tonight and tried to see Joanne. He could be curled up on the sofa with her, watching TV, or ignoring the TV while they explored kissing and touching. Instead he’d been noble and left her alone. What was wrong with him?

A door scraped open, and footsteps headed down a flight of wooden stairs. Heavy treads, men, and the lighter tread of a female. The light steps moved swiftly past the heavy.

“Is this him?” the woman asked, breathless, eager.

Goddess, please don’t tell me this is a Shifter groupie who wants a shag. I might throw up on her.

The bag loosened, and then was ripped from Broderick’s head. He still couldn’t see—a blindfold covered his eyes. Light penetrated the cloth, a very bright one, as though someone shone a flashlight on his face.

He felt breath touch his cheek, feminine, almost sweet, but cold and rapid with excitement. A small hand in his hair raised his head. Broderick suppressed his growl, his urge to snap out of the restraints and attack.

“Are you sure this is him?” the woman asked. She sounded young, especially for a human, past teen years, but not much. Broderick’s head was moved left and right, the woman’s breath coming faster. “Wait …” She released him abruptly, and Broderick’s head clunked to the cement floor.

“What the hell did you bring me?” she demanded.

“The Shifter who came out of the Guardian’s back door,” a man answered. His voice was deep, holding strength, yet Broderick heard and smelled his fear. Of a woman not much older than a cub?

“This isn’t him!” She climbed to her feet, her voice shrill. The flashlight beamed against Broderick’s blindfold. “Does this look like a Feline? He’s Lupine, you idiot.”

“How the hell are we supposed to tell the difference?” the man asked with the annoyance of a scared person. “You didn’t give us a picture to go by.”

“Four Shifters live in that house,” the young woman snapped. “Two are female. I would have thought you had at least a fifty-fifty chance of snatching the right male. But no, you had to bring me someone completely off the chart. He’s obviously a grunt worker. No use to me at all!”

Was she insane? The two Shifters who lived in Sean’s house were Sean, the Shiftertown Guardian, and his father, Dylan. If this woman’s thugs had captured Dylan, he’d have killed her by now and all these guys too—and joined Spike for three pizzas. Sean wouldn’t have been much safer for her, but maybe a little more polite before he left their bodies in broken piles.

Ah, the lucky sons of bitches. They’d snagged Broderick instead.

When offered the opportunity read and review this eight book box set it was a bit daunting, so I decided that rather than eating the entire desert buffet in one sitting, I would start off with a couple of new treats to satisfy that reading sweet tooth. Being familiar with several of the authors' works offered up in this bundle it was my choice to go for the unfamiliar and try out some new treats. I was certainly not disappointed and must say the two I have read so far alone are more than worth the price of a first class ticket. 

The first read was Bodyguard (Shifters Unbound #2.5) by Jennifer Ashley and who would have thought a Kodiak bear would be the shifter of my dreams. The story takes place in a society where shifters have been outed to the mundane world and forced to live in communities segregated from the human population. Significant prejudice exists with little to no rights afforded the shifters. Elizabeth runs a small store on the edge of town and unlike other establishments she does not refuse to serve the shifter population. When the baddies attack her, Ronan shifts and saves her life and is arrested. Elizabeth stands up for him and testifies and we are off on a great adventure.

The story is very well written and full of wonderful world building and characters that will steal your heart leaving you begging for more. Of course there is intrigue and showdowns, as well as some wonderfully sensual tasteful smexy going on. 

This is one series I fully intend to keep my eye on and go back for seconds and hopefully thirds or more. 

The second read was Alejandro's Sorceress by Alyssa Day. This was a wonderfully uproarious tale of magic and fun with great characters you wish were your neighbors just so you could peak over the fence and watch. Alejandro is a tough as nails P-Ops agent and about as cynical as they come. He and his partner are dispatched to deal with a complaint of garden pests and when they arrive they meet Rose, a garden witch who would rather deal with the pests on her own without the bureaucratic bother the P-Ops crew brings into the mix. Alejandro's partner is turned to stone by the pests and magical mayhem ensues with sparks flying between Rose and Alejandro, interfering family members, brownies, pixies, trolls and more thrown into the mix.

The world building was delightful and writing very well executed leaving me laughing and occasionally shedding a tear. The smexy was swoon-worthy, very tasteful, and sensually written. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this author's work and certainly hope there will be more from The Cardinal Witches to come.

Overall I have to say that even if you read only the first two of the books in this wonderful set it is well worth the price of admission and I fully intend to continue the journey through the next six books with high hopes. This is definitely a recommended read for paranormal romance fans with a taste for shifters, vampires, magic and more, which also offers sensual smexy, and a host of fun stories. I received this book with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.

I read The Bodyguard, by Jennifer Ashley, which is part of an eight-book box set called Dark and Deadly. In it, Elizabeth Chapman, completely human heroine, finds herself under the protection of a very cute, very single Kodiak bear named Ronan. Ronan, having saved Elizabeth’s life, takes it upon himself to become her full time bodyguard. As the danger escalates, he forces her to move in with him in Shiftertown where he can keep her safe. Elizabeth, not used to relying on others, isn’t so sure moving in with the big bear is such a good idea. She just might have to learn to trust someone other than herself.

The Bodyguard was a quick read but in some ways too quick. Although the book is exactly what it promises, when it was done I was looking for a little more or maybe just something a little different. It had a touch of been there, done that feel to it. There was nothing overly unique or fresh about the story or its characters, however I enjoyed them anyway.

So would I recommend The Bodyguard? YES, if you like paranormal romance, specifically about shifters, then I’m sure you will enjoy this book. It definitely delivers. In addition, if the other seven stories in the box set are like this, I would be quite happy to recommend them to all you romance lovers out there. I’m not ready to add it to my top favorite books of all time, but I would definitely read this author again.

A man in a leather coat stood in what used to be the doorway. He was tall. And big. At least six-three or four, with broad, powerful shoulders. A once-black T-shirt, now covered in dust, stretched tightly across his well-defined chest. Low-slung jeans with a studded leather belt and chain accentuated his narrow hips. He was dressed like an outlaw from a motorcycle gang.

He was also favoring one leg and cradling his arm.

Without thinking of the consequences, Olivia flew to his side and righted an overturned chair. “Here. Sit.”

When she helped him into the seat, her hand inadvertently brushed his. Before she jerked it away, a visual list of his injuries rolled like movie credits in her head. Concussion but no head trauma, broken clavicle and leg, cracked ribs, torn meniscus, multiple contusions.

“No. I…can’t.” He had a strange accent. One she’d never heard before. “Need to…find my dog.”

She blinked once, confused, and then she remembered the dog she’d seen before the explosion. “He’s yours?”

The man brightened. “Is he here?”

“No, I saw him a few minutes before all this happened.”

His face fell and he started to push himself up.

“Hold on,” she said. “What are you doing?”

“Got…to…find…him.”

It was strange to see such a man looking so vulnerable. Because his injuries weren’t life-threatening, she’d be able to heal them fairly quickly, though. “You’re not going anywhere like this. Not until I can—”

As soon as she bent down to kneel in front of him, her mother’s admonitions rang in her head. What the hell am I doing? She pulled her hands back as if she’d just burned them. She couldn’t let anyone, especially a stranger, know what she was capable of. It wasn’t like he was dying, she reasoned. It would be a different story if he were. “I’m sure he’ll turn up.”

He was studying her a little too intently, and she got the distinct impression it wasn’t because he didn’t believe what she’d said about his dog.

“Wait here,” she ordered, standing up quickly. “I’ll let someone know you need an ambulance.”

“No,” he said vehemently. “No ambulances.” He sure didn’t sound confused anymore.

Unruly dark hair, which included a few thin braids, hung over his brow, reminding her of the wild stallions in the horse books she’d read as a kid. His features were chiseled, his jaw square and strong. His nose, though straight, had a bump on the bridge as if it had been broken once or twice. Not tonight, but earlier. And his eyes…God, those eyes.

They were almost otherworldly.

Framed with thick lashes a girl would kill for, the steely-gray of his irises glimmered in the glare of the aid cars’ lights as if they were backlit. Even though he was hurt, she found him rugged, powerful, and utterly beautiful.

“I saw you here…earlier.”

He had to be confused, because if he’d been in, she’d have remembered him. He wasn’t the sort of man she’d ever forget. “Oh really?” she asked, humoring him.

“You gave him…water. Thank you.”

“You did see me,” she said, a little startled. She narrowed her eyes, trying to think of where he could’ve been. “Were you…?”

“Across the street,” he finished. “At the club.” His voice had a rough, hardened edge, which she found oddly soothing. “Are you okay?” he asked, looking around the rubble of the wine shop.

No, she wasn’t okay. She was shaken up, freaked out, and really, really scared. But at least she was alive. Unlike her boss.

“I was trapped downstairs in the wine cellar when it happened. I just got out.”

“You’re not injured, lass?”

Lass? Is he visiting from Scotland or something?

His concern for her despite the fact that he was in much worse shape struck an unexpected chord. “I’m…I’m fine. Really. Please, let me get you some help.”

“No. No help for me,” he repeated. “But my dog…”

He grabbed the back of the chair and tried to push himself to a standing position.

“Hold on.” She held up her hands but didn’t touch him. She didn’t want to see another laundry list of his injuries again. And once she made contact with an injured person, it was hard not to heal them. “You’re in no shape to go anywhere. What’s your name?” she asked, trying to distract him.

“Asher,” he groaned. “But I must leave.”

“Well, Asher, I’m Olivia, and you really need to take it easy. You’ve got a list of injuries a mile long. And…I mean…” She tried to backpedal. “You seem like you’re hurt pretty badly. You know, just from how you look.” Oh man, she needed to just stop talking or she was going to dig herself into a deeper hole. Of course he looked injured. Any regular person without a Talent could see that. She didn’t need to be acting so guilty.

He opened his mouth, probably to protest, but just then, a man in a reflective orange vest appeared in the doorway.

“Hey, if you’re not hurt, I could really use your help out here.”

She looked at Asher. “I’m not, but he needs—”

Asher’s eyes turned concrete gray. There was a tiny, yet deliberate shake of his head. I’m fine, he mouthed.

Okay. That’s bizarre.

He clearly didn’t want any medical treatment, but given how hurt she knew he was, it didn’t make sense. Maybe he had an aversion to needles or something. If the tables were turned and she was the one with all those injuries, she’d totally go and— No, wait. She wouldn’t be excited to go to the hospital, either. The authorities might find out about her.

She chewed on her bottom lip. Part of her wanted to go out and help, but the rest of her wanted to get as far away as possible. Out there, she’d be surrounded by injured and suffering people. She didn’t know if she’d be able to resist using her abilities. And if someone were dying…

The aid worker clapped his hands. “Come on. Let’s go. You’re wasting time.”

Asher looked at her, a curious expression on his face. “If you’re concerned about me, I’m fine. Just a little shaken up.”

She had no idea why he was lying about being hurt or why he didn’t want any help, but one thing was certain. This handsome stranger was hiding a few secrets of his own.

Misty is a sweet human who has fallen for a shifter with a lot of baggage and who his people expect to mate with one of his own kind. She is a florist which for some reason makes her seem all that more innocent to me.

Jennifer Ashley has done it again with a great story and characters that you really want to love. I've been a fan of this series since the beginning and when Graham first came into the picture I was hoping he would find someone to love. He's emotionally scarred with a gruff exterior but you can tell he's a very noble man and underneath that intimidating persona he puts out there to keep people from getting too close, is a very lovable man who needs a mate to complete him.

Graham doesn't really know where he fits in since coming to live in this shifter community where Eric is the leader. He was the leader in his own community but they all had to move to a new shifter town and he's no longer the big boss although his pack members who followed him there do still see him as the boss and their leader.

Graham has been dating Misty but has kept his distance emotionally, that is until he gets a troubling call from her and she is kidnapped. He is a beside himself with worry for her and we know he's going to save her but there are some Fae problems along the way. Fae magic and shifters don't go well together at all and this throws a few twists into this story that I really liked.

The sexual tension is massive for the first half of this book because although our sweet little human wants to have her way with Graham, he has put the brakes on so he doesn't go too far with her. But he can only hold out for so long before the sexual attraction between them pushes him past his breaking point and he has to have her.

While there are secondary character storylines going on in this story, they don't take anything away from Graham and Misty's story at all. In fact I love that about this series because we get to meet so many characters in shifter town and get to know them and hope that some time down the line they get their own book. Some of the best secondary characters in this book are the two cubs that Graham ends up looking after. Not only are they young kids but shifter kids, hence the being called 'cubs'. They get into trouble, eat, make a mess, get into more trouble, eat some more and just seem adorable.

If you're a fan of this series you'll love this book. If you're new to the series I suggest starting with the first book and reading your way through the series in order to really understand all of the characters but you can still read this as a stand alone book and enjoy it.
