Silence Fallen is another solid book from Briggs. I adore the world Briggs has created to play in. Each book brings something new. This time Mercy and some of the pack head to Europe...not for a vacation! We get details about the werewolves and vampires of those regions and how they are connected to Bran and the vampire, Marsilia. No fae action in this one, but plenty of ghosts. Mercy is forced to explore her powers involving ghosts. I also loved seeing more of the goblin Larry and his dry humor. He is a great ally for Adam's pack.

Silence Fallen was written a bit differently than past Mercy books. The POV switches between Mercy and Adam. I enjoyed getting the extra information as Mercy and Adam fight to get back to each other and taking down the bad guys on the way.

Most people have a go to comfort food. Book lovers also have comfort books/authors. These are books that no matter what, they will deliver exactly what we were looking for. I have a handful of authors that fall into this category and Briggs' Mercy Thompson series is near the top. I know I will get a well told and well written story about characters I know like old friends as well as opportunities to meet some new ones.

Fire Touched has Mercy and Adam thrown into Fae politics and their city set to become ground zero for a Fae vs human war. And it all seems to balance on the fate of a 10 year old boy, Aiden. I adored his character and hope he becomes a regular member of Adam's pack. They seem to pick up new members with each book. I love Brigg's take on the Fae and was glad to see more of their world brought into the series. We get to find out more about Underhill and why the Fae were cut off from her. And my Bea Fae, Beauclaire makes an appearance, along with Baba Yaga. One of the most consistent things about this series is Adam and Mercy's relationship. It is rock solid and he is one of the best examples of how an alpha male character should act. His protectiveness and loyalty to Mercy and his pack make him sexy as hell.

There has been a big change in how the pack operates now and it will have long lasting effects. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, and what new supernatural creature will show up this time.

I am a huge fan of the author Patricia Briggs. I have been reading her Mercy Thompson series since the first book came out and have eagerly awaited each new installment every year since. I recently found out she was going to be at Powell's Books, which is about six hours from where I live, for a signing in celebration of her newest release, Night Broken. Well what's a fangirl to do but head on out for a road trip. 

Some time ago Baart's cousin dropped by for a "visit." He has since taken up residence in my office and he very graciously agreed to accompany me on my adventure. 

The morning of our journey showed great promise. The sun was shining, the tank was full, and all of the essentials were packed including my road trip companion, snacks for the road, and of course a really awesome audio book for the ride.

The first stop for any experienced road tripper is for libations with my drink of choice being a piping hot cup of coffee - a big hot Kicker to be exact, and it appeared that my companion was equally appreciative of my taste. Yep he also appreciated the lovely barista that prepared this yummy concoction and was very grateful for this tasty treat!

The actual drive, although long (ending up about seven hours), was pretty uneventful. We were able to wave at a few of the cousins on the way . . . 

On arrival at Powell's Books, not having been to this type of event before, I spoke with the very kind employees at the information desk and was informed that the general process was to buy whatever books you had chosen and find a seat. The program would include a reading, question and answer period, and signing. Sharon and I had discussed which book to choose for this post and decided since the new release was just recently featured, why not introduce the series those of you who have not yet jumped on the Mercy Thompson bandwagon with book one in the series, Moon Called. I had called ahead to order the book and the only copy they had that was not a used book was one with the UK cover, so this is what I ordered. My companion and I scurried up to the checkout and paid for the book.

While waiting for the program to begin I found that book people are really a fun bunch, not only online where I usually socialize, but also in person and there is never a stranger in the bunch. We talked about all kinds of books we enjoyed; shared about books and authors some had not yet tried or read, and overall had loads of fun with book talk. 

Once Patricia Briggs was introduced she decided to begin the program with a question and answer period. There were a lot of questions about her series The Hobb's Bargain, originally published in 2001, and whether we could expect more from this world: the answer, yes, eventually. She is currently working on the next installment in the Alpha and Omega series, currently is being titled Dead Heat and is expected to be published in the spring of 2015. The next Mercy Thompson book is titled Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson is scheduled for release in September of 2014. She explained that this will be in the style of an anthology with half of the book previously published Mercy Thompson shorts and half of the book new content. She also stated the book is expected to be pretty substantial in size and it looks like it is going to be a real treat. 

The issue of cover art for the Mercy Thompson series was raised and, as some may already know, the new Mercy physique came about with cover artist's model, who has been the same for the entire series, having a baby - well yep this does result in some changes. The publisher evidently likes the change and it is likely to stay. One thing I found particularly interesting was the discussion about Mercy's tattooing on the covers. It is different on all of the books and while I always noticed, I never quite understood this. The tattoos actually tell bits and pieces of the story in the book, which I thought was pretty cool. 

Following the question and answer period she read a short passage from Night Broken and the signing commenced. We went up by rows and as you can see I am pretty far back so by the time it was my turn it was about 10:00 p.m. and roughly thirteen hours since heading out on this journey. Of course being the incredibly prepared individual I am I had rehearsed in my head all the way what I would say and just how witty I could be in the saying, full of confidence that I would just be so very professional. Well it was my turn and my brain shut down. All I could hear was the blah blah blah just like the adults in a snoopy cartoon, although eventually I was able to get out that I was excited to be there for myself and getting to share the experience on the blog I Smell Sheep and asked if my companion could take a picture with her to which she agreed. Then the oh-so professional me COULD NOT GET THE CAMERA UNLOCKED on my phone. Certain I am ten shades of purple by now, not to mention dead tired, she very graciously offered to have one of the teenagers in line unlock it for me - yes friends this is what really occurred. Well I hit the button and got the shot, much to the obvious annoyance of the lady seated in the background LOL who I did not see until later. Then my sheeply friends Patricia Briggs signed this awesome book. She not only signed it, she also drew a sheep next to her signature and said she wrote sheep next to it because she wanted to make sure we knew what she drew, frankly I think she did a darn fine job of it.

I am late to the Patricia Briggs fan club. I started with the Alpha and Omega series and picked up the Mercy Thompson series at book 7 Frost Burned (yes, I have a lot of catching up to do!). A reader can pick pick up any book in the series and slip right into the Mercy Thompson universe and feel right at home. One of the things I love about her books is the comfortable feel to her prose.

Night Broken brings an age old threat to Mercy’s home—the ex-wife. This was my first meeting with Christy and boy did Briggs make me sympathetic to Mercy’s situation. I wanted to rip the woman’s eyes out in the first few pages! But to be fair, Christy did have a serious problem stalking her, even if it was her own stupid fault. Yeah, I’m judging.

Kudos to Briggs for creating such a unique antagonist. He is brutal and broken, and you do feel sympathy for his situation, but he is a force that must be put down. You don’t throw a finger at Mercy and not expect repercussions.

I was so glad to see the Fae Lord Alistair Beauclaire from Fair Game (Alpha and Omega #3) make an appearance. He wants to reclaim the walking stick Mercy obtained in Frost Burned. The only problem is she must find Coyote and get it back from him. We learn more about Coyote and it turns out Mercy isn’t his only child. A new werewolf submissive, Zack, has showed up in town and I am hoping we will get more of his possibly heartbreaking story in the next book.

Once again a great read from start to finish from Briggs. You don’t have to start from the beginning of the series to appreciate Night Broken, but why rob yourself of all the thrills and chills (I’m talking about the kind you get from reading about alpha werewolves, hubba hubba) you get by starting with book one Moon Called.

Book Review: Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs

There is a reason certain authors and books are on the Best Seller’s list. I haven’t read the Mercy Thompson series by Briggs, and yet I was able to jump right into book #7, Frost Burned, and felt right at home with the story and characters. This book, and Briggs's writing, is fine tuned for the masses. The book's story arc, which was very exciting and action packed, was brought to a satisfactory conclusion and the series story arc wasn't confusing to me because the back-story recapping was perfect.

I hesitate to talk about the plot too much because I am sure there are spoilers galore if you want to start with book one. However, if I can connect with these characters so quickly at book seven I can image how invested the fans are who have been reading the series since the beginning. Briggs doesn't hesitate from doing bad things to her characters and I like that. Her supernatural world is full of beings who might look human on the outside, but they are definitely not on the inside and she never lets you forget that. If you love alpha males then you definitely want to check out this series. Someone dies and even though I know nothing of this character other than their name, I could feel the pain that this death caused the other characters. I am a urban fantasy fan through and through and the Mercy Thompson series rings all my bells. There is so much more to come for this series with the vampires, werewolves and fae…

On March 15 Patricia Briggs did a signing at Barnes & Noble in Charlotte, NC. Lucky for me it is only a 90 minute drive. I don’t know much about Briggs since Fair Game was her first book I've read (I will be rectifying this mistake as soon as possible by the way). There were only about 20 of us there, which meant we had time to play around after the signing. Fortunately what happens in B&N, stays in B&N ;) Patty is such a warm and funny person and she likes to talk…a lot <G>. She talked about the Mercy Thompson series, the Alpha &Omega universe and upcoming projects. Since everyone else asked all the basic stuff I threw in some of our fun interview questions from here on the blog. Rather than transcribe the whole talk (I did mention she liked to talk, right?) I will just post the highlights of what she said:

A Bram Book: Bran is not in a happy place right now and Briggs likes people to walk away from her books with a good feeling, and unless Bran takes a left turn at Albuquerque we won’t be seeing his book. But a short story is another matter. She is working on some short stories in the Mercy Universe. Especially Warren (do I have this right?). She said he isn’t bothered by killing people at all and Mercy doesn’t know this.

I asked if we would see more of Alistair, the powerful Fae from Fair Game (cause I have a thing for Fae). She is contracted for 4 books. Three in the Mercy series and one in the A&O universe. There are so many characters she wants to give a book too and since Charles and Ann are in a happy place right now (happy people don’t make good books) she will leave them alone for a while. She also mentions that Fair Game is a great starting point for people and Mercy fans need to read it because the twist at the end of Fair Game changes things in the Mercy universe too.

Jesse: Adam doesn’t want her to be a werewolf or part of their world because he doesn’t like being one, but Jesse might feel differently. Which means conflict (she smiles here). She doesn’t know exactly what will happen, but Jesse’s future will be adventurous.

How did she pick Mercy’s career: in 2005 Patty was asked to write an Urban Fantasy with a heroine connected to the supernatural world and she should have a complicated love life with a vamp or werewolf. At the time it UF with vamps and werewolves was still new. She picked weres because at the time vamps were popular. Then she decided the heroine had to be underpowered so she could have conflict. Her reasoning was…I am from Montana…underpowered…coyote…coyotes are popular in Native American myths so Mercy should be N.A. too. As far as a job for Mercy, she wanted it to be something she knew about and since bagel bagger didn’t sound so great she went with mechanic. She and her husband owned VWs and were always fixing them on their own. (By the way, she says NEVER get a EuroVan) There was a mechanic in their Montana town, Buck, that sold them parts at cost and told them how to fix their cars when they couldn’t afford to have him do it. He became Zee in her Mercy books.

Other favorite authors: She told Jim Butcher that he almost ruined her marriage because her husband likes his books better than hers. She doesn’t know why Lynn Viehl isn’t a NY Times bestselling author. She loves her books. She mentioned Meljean Brook's steampunk series, Ann Bishop and Ilona Andrews as well as lots more.

I asked her what theme music she would like playing whenever she entered a room. She picked the theme to Jaws <G>

Memorial Day weekend she will be attending the only Con in Montana and George R.R. Martin will be there.

Last year was the single most disastrous year she has ever had. She and her husband spent 9 months in her 30 X 10 foot writing trailer along with the dog, 4 cats, 2 snakes, and a bird (this is why there is only one book this year) They were having an addition put on the house that was to take two weeks. But they found black mold, and had to take the roof off and replace. Everything had to be taken out and stored in the front yard in moving containers.

The Mercy books are kind of a microcosm of the werewolf world. They are in a small town and events that take place don’t have an impact on the rest of the world. The Alpha & Omega series is where the big things happen that affect the werewolf world. Charles is the enforcer for Bran and is in contact with all the packs. A&O was where Briggs wanted to tell the backstory of how the werewolves came out to humans. She also wanted to write a serial killer novel set in Boston. The twist at the end of Fair Game was something she wanted to happen in the Mercy universe and this turned out to be the perfect place for it.

I also asked her what fictional character she would like to have her back during the zombie apocalypse. She said Superman or Harry Dresden.
