TV Show Reveiew: Resident Alien (SYFY)

Resident Alien SYFY TV Series
Creator Chris Sheridan
Stars: Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds
website
TV-14
An alien crash lands on Earth and must pass himself off as small-town human doctor Harry Vanderspeigle. Arriving with a secret mission to kill all humans, Harry starts off living a simple life… but things get a bit rocky when he’s roped into solving a local murder and realizes he needs to assimilate into his new world.

Not long ago I had an old injury come back and lay me out for a couple weeks. During that time I was flipping around my Peacock app and found a show based off a Dark Horse Comic series.

I sure love Dark Horse so that got me interested right away. Turns out the lead character is played by Alan Tudyk from Firefly and now I'm REALLY interested.

The show has aired two seasons so far on the SYFY channel and hopefully season three will drop early next year. The show is set in a small town called Patience, Colorado and the people of the town make the show even more engaging. Filled will humor, dark comedy and some really heart felt moments that had me watching episodes non-stop.

When an alien crash lands into this small town and tried to "blend in", it sure does lead to some very funny comedic moments. Lots of them actually. The addition of some major hitting actors like Linda Hamilton and Terry O'Quinn only bring this one up to yet another level of entertainment.

Each episode adds another layer of depth and emotion to an already building world. Tons of heart felt moments and life lessons just burst all around this one. I loved it, didn't want it to end and look forward to watching what will hopefully be many more years of entertainment.

SYFY and Dark Horse have found an alien match made in the cosmos above and what a thoroughly pleasurable ride this one is. Probe away on me anytime!

TV Series Review: Deadly Class (SyFy 2019-) spoiler-free

Deadly Class
TV Series (2018– )
First episode date: January 16, 2019
Creators: Miles Orion Feldsott, Rick Remender
Stars: Benedict Wong, Benjamin Wadsworth, Lana Condor
Network: Syfy
Based on: Deadly Class; by Rick Remender & Wesley Craig
Production location(s): Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
TV-MA | 1h | Action, Crime, Drama
Based on the graphic novel of the same name comes an unlikely coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of unsanitized 1980s counterculture. A homeless, disillusioned teen named Marcus is recruited into Kings Dominion, a secret academy for the Deadly Arts, where he struggles to find his place among a community of the deadliest characters in the world -- literally fighting every day for survival. It is in this struggle he tries to find purpose and family in an unlikely group of outcast misfits who plan to use their skills to really change the world for the better... by breaking every rule there is.

I hadn't read Deadly Class from Image Comics before. Unfortunately, I decided to jump in at issue #36 which just released...DON'T DO THAT! I spoiled the big ending of the first story arc. And it's a big one...smh. But if you've read all the issues up to #36 then you're gonna love it.

Back to the TV show... I absolutely love this show for many reasons. First, I'm an 80s child. As in I graduated from high school and college in the 80s. You don't get any eightier than me. Deadly Class is set in the 80s and they got it right. So they got me with the nostalgia angle.

Bonus, the creators of the comic have made sure the TV show stays as true to the story as possible. As we all know, most adaptations, while still entertaining, are barely recognizable to the original material. Ask any Venom fan. Not only do they keep to the story, but they also do flashbacks in the show in animation with the same artwork used in the comic. Cool creative decision.

The story is pretty simple. Assassin school for kids. This is where parents who are part of mafia organizations, cartels, syndicates, white supremacy groups, CIA send their kids. Each year Head Master Lin recruits some street kids with no ties to a group or family if they seem like they could do well in the program.

I don't know why they show has grabbed my attention so quickly, but the dark humor mixed with drama is definitely part of it. There are many themes and social issues addressed as a group of misfit rejects try to survive in this school.

My husband and 17 year-old-daughter are also hooked. There have been three episodes so far (airs Wed. 10pm on SyFy) so there is plenty of time to catch up.

Fantasy author A.M. Bochnak: Magic is alive and well. (The Magical Bond Series)

I’m actually a unicorn!

Well not really, but it’s a game I play often with my children in an attempt to convince them that magic is real. Somehow, and it definitely was not my doing, my young children (ages 6 and 9) got it in their heads that magic wasn’t real. Can you believe that craziness?

Of course, magic is real. Magic is in all of us. We’re born with it and the only way we can lose our magic is if we lose our imagination. Our ability to let our imagination run wild and form new ideas and concepts to heighten our senses is closely tied to magic. The two really do go hand in hand.

Now, I know what your thinking. You’re sitting there reading this, maybe even rolling your eyes at me, doubting every word I’ve written so far. That’s what my children do every time we play this game. Doubt me all you want, but I stand behind my beliefs and hold onto the reality that I’m actually a unicorn!

Let’s talk a moment about what it means to be ‘real.’ Are you like my children? The only things they think are real are the objects they can see and touch. I’ll agree, its much easier to think of something as real if you can pick it up and hold it. Our instincts to believe in the things we cannot see is much stronger when we’re small children. Remember Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy? I remember fighting sleep every night I lost a tooth hoping to catch a glimpse of that tiny fairy coming to exchange my tooth for a quarter. I knew it had to take some really special magic in order for something so tiny to bring me a quarter. Sadly, I was never able to stay awake long to see her, but even after all these years, I’ve never lost faith in the belief of such an amazing creature.

Why is that? Why do I hang onto my belief in something I’ve never seen and yet so many others long ago let go of such ideas? In part, the older we get, the more cynical become and believing in such things just seems stupid. I get it, I really do. But I refuse to let time, age, and societal pressures rob me of the greatest ability we’ve ever been given. Our ability of imagination!

With a little imagination, anything is possible. Even magic. If you’re still rolling your eyes at me, take a step back and ask yourself, why is it so bad to believe in magic? I’ll give you three great reasons why you should consider my argument for magic and start believing again!

1. It’s great to feel like a kid again. Let’s face it, being a kid is fun. Why not let your hair down, enjoy yourself for a bit, and act like a kid? Let the magic flow through you. It’ll make you feel younger and more alive that you have in years!

2. It’ll make you feel happier and healthier. Letting your imagination draw you into an abstract concept like magic will make you feel good. The better you feel, the happier you are. Happiness, true happiness, will improve your overall health.

3. You’ll relax and stop taking everything so seriously. This is a really important point and largely why I love to read so much. I lose myself and all my worries when I open up a great story full of magic.

Trust me, magic is alive and well. Just go to your local library or bookstore and pe
ruse the pages of books. Let your imagination take you onto the pages and let go of all inhibition. I promise you, if you do, you’ll find that magic and once again believe. I am actually a unicorn.

Fear The Walking Dead
It's been confirmed that Fear the Walking Dead will take place during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse - that period its parent series missed, with Rick in his coma - and is set in Los Angeles, over 2,000 miles from Atlanta where The Walking Dead is set.

But while Fear will initially serve as a prequel - dealing with the "anxiety and anticipation" of an outbreak, rather than going "full-zombie" - The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has confirmed that the two series' timelines will align at some point.

Wipeout-ABC
Wipeout looks to be returning for eighth season this coming summer. After the Summer 2014 run of lower rated episodes, producers appear to be overhauling the format for 2015. ABC is now casting for an updated version, called Wipeout Extreme.

Interview: composers and writers Jon and Al Kaplan talk Zombeavers!

Are you a campy horror movie lover? If you are then you have probably heard about or seen the trailer for Zombeavers! Did it give you the warm and fuzzies too? The three guys responsible have been extremely busy, but Jon and Al Kaplan were kind enough to make some time to visit the Flock! These two brothers are talented and hilarious. You will have to visit their three YouTube channels (yes! it takes three channels to contain the epicness).

Welcome to the Flock! *hands Jon and Al each a Solo cup of Kool-Aid* Be sure to drink it all.*twitch, twitch*

Sharon: You guys are composers, lyricists and comedy writers. You wrote the score to two SyFy classics, Piranhaconda and Dinocroc Vs. Supergator. What made you want to write a screenplay for a campy horror movie?
Jon Kaplan: We weren't getting enough scoring jobs so we thought we might as well try to get a movie made and then score it. Seriously. And one of the reasons we went with Zombeavers is because it was the kind of thing that producers might actually let us score, since we'd already done the SyFy stuff you mention.
Al Kaplan: Also, our writing partner Jordan Rubin was very interested in doing a zombie movie. We love zombie movies but felt they were kind of played out at the time, so we chose a joke version that appealed to us. We'd batted around the idea of Zombeavers for years, but for a bunch of different reasons it was finally the right time to do it.

Sharon: The trailer for Zombeavers has gone viral, and so I have to ask the obvious question, WTF? And when can we see it?!
J: The preview is actually pretty good, and for a long time the title and concept would usually get a reaction—whether positive or negative—so we're not that surprised with this response. That said, we have no idea when, how or where the movie itself will become available.
A: Hopefully soon.

Sharon: If readers check out your website they will find you two write musicals based on movies that qualify as classics in my book. So which movie-based musical are you most proud of?
A: I choose Neeson Season. It's one of the better impressions and it has added weight because there's a video of Liam Neeson watching it.

J: It'd be hard to not go with Silence! or 24: Season Two, since those are full length, but assuming you mean the one-off YouTube musicals, I'd choose John Carpenter's The Thing: The Musical.
Sharon: You guys are brothers. Which one of you was the favorite child?
J: Our sister Caroline.

Sharon: What is the nerdiest thing you own?
A: I have a book called Making Ghostbusters. It's got the script with annotated comments by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and a lot of unused ghost concepts by Bernie Wrightson
.

J: An abstract drawing by film composer Howard Shore, which he doodled on a paper table cloth while bored at a restaurant with us and a few other folks in 2004. I surreptitiously tore the artwork from the table on the way out, and it's now framed on my desk.

Sharon: Which Disney movie character would you like date?
J: Ariel when she has legs. Or if you include cartoon animals, then Cleo from Pinocchio.
A: I also choose Ariel, and though she's not a Disney character, Mrs. Brisby from Secret of N.I.M.H. is very sexy.

Sharon: When the zombie apocalypse happens (and we know it will!) who do you want to have your back? (Fictional characters count too) Would either of you trip the other to get away?
J: Zhang Ziyi. We are too slow to even bother tripping each other.

Rapid Fire

Sharon: Godzilla or King Kong?
J: Godzilla.

A: King Kong.

Sharon: Coke or Pepsi?
J: Coke.

A: Coke.
*Sharon's heart breaks*

Sharon: stabbed or shot?
J: Shot.
A: Shot.

Sharon: bull rider or bull fighter?
J: Bull rider.

A: Bull fighter.

Sharon: Monty Python or Saturday Night Live (original cast members)?
J: Monty Python.

A: Monty Python.

Sharon: Thank you so much for taking the time! Anything you would like to say before the Kool-Aid…er, you take a nap?
J: Thanks for having us!

A: Don't forget to send me a copy!

TV Show Review: Helix on SyFy

Helix
http://www.syfy.com/helix
TV Series Sci-Fi | Thriller
Creator: Cameron Porsandeh
Cast:
Billy Campbell - Dr. Alan Farragut
Jordan Hayes - Dr. Sarah Jordan
Neil Napiee - Dr. Peter Farragut
Hiroyuki Sanada - Dr. Hiroshi Hatake
Kyra Zagorsky - Dr. Julia Walker
Mark Ghanimé - Major Sergio Balleseros
Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind's salvation...or total annihilation.

Helix is the product of some of the biggest names in genre television, starting with Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica). Also Executive Producing are Lynda Obst (Contact) and Steven Maeda (Lost, CSI: Miami, The X-Files).

Helix must have cost SyFy a lot of money because they have been promoting the crap out of it. I’ve been waiting months for it. But was it worth the wait? Hell yeah! I could poke holes in the science and story all day long, but in the end it is a lot of entertainment packed into 60 minutes. You get a high creep factor, lots of suspense and some damn fine looking actors too boot!
Billy Campbell (wow, he has great hair) plays the genius CDC expert, Dr. Allan Farragut, sent in to investigate an outbreak in the middle of the Artic and when has any movie/show set in the Artic been a good thing? Yeah, never! The lab facility is run by Dr. Hiroshi Hatake played by Hiroyuki Sanada who is also in the movie Ronin 47. His character stands around looking all evil scientist and says very little, but he looks good doing it. Neil Napiee plays Dr. Peter Farragut the black gooey kisser. He does psycho really well. The women on the team are all very nice to look at too.

Here is the main cast. Guess which characters are hiding a  a big secret?

You can catch the pilot and episode #1 and #2 on demand or the SyFy website. I suggest you see them in order. One last thing I want to mention is the music used. WTH? It is actually kind of brilliant how the upbeat music is used with the disturbing scenes.
Imagine watching people dying a horrible death while listening to this little ditty... simply brilliant!
I already have my theories about what is going on. If you want to talk about it use the comments. If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read the comments!
