Unwritten (The Zweeshen Chronicles #1)
by
Alicia J. Novo
May 8th, 2021
Genre: YA Fantasy
Books whisper to Beatrix Alba. But they aren’t the reason she has never fit in. Bullied at home and school, she keeps a secret—a power of violence and darkness.

When the spell that keeps her hidden fails, she’s catapulted into the Zweeshen, a realm where all tales live, and her dream of meeting her favorite characters comes true. But wishes are tricky, and behind its wonder and whimsy, the Zweeshen is under attack. A character is burning bookworlds in pursuit of a weapon to rule both stories and storytellers. To succeed, he needs a riddle in Beatrix’s keeping.

Now he’s hunting her down.

Joining forces with William, a cursed conjurer, Beatrix must face an enemy who knows her every weakness in a realm where witches play with time, Egyptian gods roam, and Regency heroines lead covert operations. And with her darkness as the only weapon, she may have to sacrifice everything to save a world that rejects her.

Alicia has a weak spot for happy endings and transformative journeys. She spent her teenage years in Argentina and Europe, speaks several languages and loves to travel. Chapters: Interactive Stories App presents Ashlyn Chase's Strange Neighbors

Update from Ashlyn Chase:

Apology!
I was told by a kind reader who didn't want me to be blindsided that there are a lot of negative reviews of the Chapters Interactive version of Strange Neighbors.

First, let me say I feel terrible if my words misled people and I would like to try to make it up to you. Apparently 'video game' was the wrong terminology. A 'choose your own romance game' wasn't right either. There's one hero and one heroine, and no choices there. I probably should have called it an interactive story, but when it was presented to me, I was told 'video game.' I admit I should have investigated it more thoroughly before signing the contract. Chalk one up to an excited author flattered that someone saw more potential in her crazy imagination.

So...I can't do much (or anything) about the game itself. I was told I'd have a chance to preview it and give my approval before it went live. That didn't happen. However, that doesn't absolve me of the confusion I may have caused.

Please...instead of leaving a negative review, do get in touch with me. I can give you a free copy of my latest book Tiger's Night Out in any format you like. Or, if you already bought that one, I can offer you another Indie.

Again, I'm sincerely sorry for rhe confusion.

What if you could turn a book from your favorite genre (like romance!) into an interactive game experience. Well, now you can! Crazy Maple Studio has created Chapters:

Aaaaaand...Ashlyn Chase's PNR comedy Strange Neighbors has been released today! You can download the app and read/play along.
Check out the trailer below!

Help bring the fantasy series Ian's Realm Saga to the big screen!

Help bring an awesome fantasy series Ian's Realm Saga by Diane Gardner to TV or the big screen!
Check out the short video (below) they made about the film.

We're putting together a proof of concept trailer to show the world what an awesome TV /movie series Ian's Realm will make.

Funding a fantasy film is no easy task. Post-production is the most costly. We'll need an editor and we'll need a talented and skilled FX editor for the special effects this story requires. We're shopping around for a composer to score just the right music. And of course, there's film festivals and marketing costs. As you can see from the graph, we've completed a good portion of our project. We just need some finishing touches.

Of course, our real goal is to do a pilot episode so we'll be talking about that in our wish list! Because if you all come through, there's a chance we can take Ian's Realm even closer to the screen.

Ian's Realm
Director: Chris Love
Writer: Dianne Gardner (screenwriter)
15 minute short
Genres: Short | Adventure | Fantasy | History
When an unsuspecting teenager from Seattle and his father discover that they tapped into a portal to another world on their computer, the two venture in. Author and Filmmaker Stephen Zimmer: A Little Advice For Filming On Location

A Little Advice For Filming On Location
Be sure to check out the teaser trailer for Rayden Valkyrie: Saga of a Lionheart below...

Filming on location, on any budget level, involves a lot of challenges, ranging from unpredictable weather to unexpected things manifesting on the location itself, such as loud vehicles running nearby while trying to capture dialogue in a scene. Some things simply cannot be planned for, but preparation is key to having a successful production.

While not glamorous, there are some key things to keep in mind no matter what kind of project you are doing.

First and foremost is insurance. A stunt can go wrong and injuries can occur. Equipment can break or become lost. If you do not have insurance, costs can escalate quickly, which can become devastating for a smaller level production. Many companies offer insurance for small, independent productions, such as Film Emporium, which is the company we worked with for Rayden Valkyrie: Saga of a Lionheart.

You want to be sure your insurance covers general liability, which you must have if you are dealing with most any public entity at the city, state, or federal level. It is not highly expensive if you are not doing a lot of dangerous stunts or working with explosions, and having it can get you access to some tremendous locations, such as a few very prime ones that we had in our production.

You also want to be sure you are covered for equipment loss and damage, and also vehicles rented by the production. A top-level camera and lens set can be rented for a fraction of what it would cost to buy, but you don't want to find yourself having to pay for a new camera or lenses if an accident occurs on set that results in damage.

With insurance protection in place, you want to make sure your cast and crew's needs are covered on set. This ranges from food to restroom facilities.

Both craft services and a solid meal schedule are essential to keeping a cast and crew in better spirits. Craft services cover having an array of snacks and energy foods available, as well as things like water, vitamin water, or coffee (in the morning). A place is set aside for craft services to be accessible at all times by both cast and crew.

As far as meals go, you don't want to be feeding your crew the same thing over and over again. Pizza every day can bring a downturn in morale very fast, and it is important to make sure cast and crew are able to get good meals on set daily. We had a great set caterer on Rayden Valkyrie: Saga of a Lionheart, who had a kitchen trailer for preparing meals on site. It was well worth the investment, and it demonstrated that we did care about those who worked with us on this project. If you cannot find a good set caterer, go the extra mile to be sure meals are varied, even if it means working with multiple restaurants.

Bathroom facilities are essential. If you are on a more remote location, rent porta potties and hand washing stations. You'll be surprised at how affordable they are, and it will save a lot of hassle from having to run cast and crew back and forth to someplace else by car to answer calls of nature.

On a more remote or wilderness location, keep in mind that equipment can be heavy to carry, and awkward over uneven terrain. Try to mitigate this as best as possible by making sure vehicles can draw very near to shooting sites, and if they cannot try to get ATV's to use. We made use of a Viking ATV during production that had room for six passengers and a bed that could hold up to 1,700 pounds of gear. Needless to say, it was a savior over and over again in getting gear, crew, and cast to shooting sites we identified. The cast and crew will appreciate it more than you know, and good morale is invaluable to getting through the trials of any film/tv production.

Weather cannot be predicted, so planning for disruptions is vital to covering the needs of a production. We had a tight schedule, but we built lighter days into the schedule, and had a couple of open days at the end, providing us with flexibility if inclement weather struck us. Fortunately, we had just one day cut short by a rainstorm, but the flexibility in our schedule allowed for us to catch up quickly. Make sure cast and crew availability is covered for those open days, if they are needed!

Also in regard to scheduling, don't run your cast and crew into the ground. Our days were mostly in the range of 10-12 hours, and there were no 18 hour days of the kind that you hear a lot of indie productions engaged in. We balanced more demanding days on the schedule with less demanding ones, so that the cast and crew were never going back to back to back with a more demanding shoot. We received many remarks of appreciation about this from the most experienced members of our crew, and our approach demonstrated that we had their well-being in mind.

An indie film/tv production on location is always going to have its twists, turns and surprises, but keeping a few key things in mind will go a long way to maintaining the kind of morale you will need among your cast and crew to bring a project in on schedule and budget.

10 Things You Might Not Know About Braxton A. Cosby (Solstice book tour) + giveaway

Thank you for letting me be a part of your guest blog series. I came up with a “quick fix” segment about myself, so that readers can get to know me better, entitled 10 Things You Might Not Know About Braxton! Enjoy!

1. Yes, the obvious: I am the nephew of famous comedian Bill Cosby.

2. I have not always wanted to be a writer. I’m actually a physical therapist by trade and the inspiration to write my first novel came in church one unassuming Sunday when I distinctly heard God speak, telling me to write Protostar. It is the first book in a trilogy that is now completed with Supernova and Solstice!

3. I am happily married with four wonderful children.

4. I have an obsession with movies. I love science fiction and fantasy, but a good romance with rich characters is always welcome.

5. I do the majority if my writing between the hours of 10pm and 1am. With my busy schedule, it’s really the only quiet time I get, but somehow I’ve been able to pen over 10 novels.

6. I graduated from the University of Miami (Florida) with three degrees; bachelors, masters and doctorate.

7. My favorite color is blue.

8. I am a NatGeo and Discovery channel geek. I love the programs that discuss physics and space. I DVR so many shows that I actually have to go back and pause them occasionally when I replay them to so “What in the world did they just say?” in order to understand the concepts.

9. Favorite quote: The more you know, the more you may know too much. Not allowing yourself to be one to learning more.

10. Favorite book of the Bible: Acts.

What You Believe, Can Destroy You!

William and Sydney have sacrificed everything to fortify their love, so much so that William dares to brave the depths of space to find a cure for their deadly Supernova bond, leaving both her and Earth vulnerable to Torrian Alliance attack.

But with a full scale rebellion in play on Fabricius, the reality of Sydney’s execution from Torrian hands is diminished, only eclipsed by the certainty of a more threats – The Third Faction and The Dagmas Clan – lead by Dominic and his insurgent recruits. With overwhelming odds mounting against them, William makes a desperate attempt to find the last of the endangered Star-children only to be captured by a new menace, where he is forced to compete in the dreaded Gauntlet of sport. Allies surge to free Fabricius, seeking alliances across the galaxy while Sydney tries to keep her identity hidden and trains to master the third phase of her Star-child evolution: Solstice.

With Sarah’s mysterious return home with clues to unlock the future, Noella’s training and Bill’s symbiotic development hope is restored, but will it be enough to unite the galaxy and destroy evil for once and for all?

CHAPTER THREE
Sydney and Noella walked hand in hand along the small winding path leading to the top the Mount Dothan. The dusking sky painted a sheet of orange and red light across the woodsy terrain around them, giving the impression of wading through a sea of fire. Amid the grim moment of the day and the burning sensation rising in Sydney’s throat, the tone seemed fitting. Silence accompanied them, and it wasn’t until the pair hit the peak that Sydney finally broke the ice. “So what do your people call this ceremony?” she asked.

“The time of the harvest. It’s the moment when a fallen soldier is said to join the being of the sky. I think humans refer to it as God,” Noella said, her tone as flat as the expression on her face.

“Sounds cool,” she replied as she surveyed the surroundings; a patch of flatland that housed a family of hawks who watched cautiously from above in a lone cedar tree. From here, every inch of Madisonburg could be observed without the need of telescope or binoculars. A bed of dandelions and weeping willows greeted them in the center of the field.

“This way. I’ll show you where I buried his body,” Noella said.

She could see that Noella was visibly shaken, slowly unravelling before her eyes. Her hands trembled as her eyes began to redden. She wondered how long it’d take, amazed at how Noella had not said a word since Arrion’s death a few weeks ago, only morning him in silence, which she explained was customary on Fabricius. She had done the deed all by herself, refusing to allow Sydney to assist in his burial. From scouting the plot of land to digging the hole, Noella insisted that it was protocol on her planet for a lone fellow soldier to be assigned the arduous task of preparation. Seeing as though William had departed soon after, there was no better candidate left for the job.

She took Noella by the hand and drew her close, giving her the most delicate and firm hug she could muster. Noella stood motionless, sinking into her friend’s embrace. After a few seconds, she released her, unable to make eye contact. “I’m here for you,” she murmured.

“Thanks, Syd,” Noella replied, her voice ragged.

She finally looked up at her and gave a nod, following Noella’s lead over to the place where Arrion’s body lay. Surprisingly, the disturbed clay seemed more settled than she expected, dried from the sun and already showing signs of life as Bermuda grass had slowly began to encroach along the edges. A makeshift tombstone had been erected, fashioned from metallic fuselage scraps of the Daedallus, with only Arrrion’s name and handle tatted along the surface, minus dates to hide his identity to hikers in hopes that most consider it a memorial to a lost pet if they stumbled upon it.

Noella knelt next to the grave, slid her backpack from her shoulders and began to open it. Searching her bag, she retrieved a small oval-shaped disk and a satchel filled with purple powder. “These are crushed lilacs pedals. We must first prepare the path for Arrion’s ascension by sending tribute to the sky.” She stood and sprinkled a few handfuls over the grave until a thin layer had materialized before them. “On our planet we usually use the oil of a Tonosia Tree, which is a lot thicker substance and is used for sterilization. Sarah thought it’d be a good idea to use lilacs as a substitute because it was a similar color.”

“It’s beautiful,” she replied.

“I will now begin the ceremony.” Noella placed the disc in the center of the burial site, depressed a red button on the top and came to her side. The two joined hands as the disc began to spin and dig into the hardened clay. Noella pointed a hydrogen phaser at the site and fired a stream of fire upon it that scorched the sheet of crushed pedals. The disc disappeared beneath the flames and Noella broke out into song, in an alien dialect that Sydney could not understand. It was less about the words and more the moment that choked at her, forcing the tears to flow freely down her face. She squeezed Noella’s hand as she crooned on. By the time Noella had finished, a small fissure had opened in the place where the disc had entered and a cloud of embers swirled into the air; a mix of red, orange and yellow. It lifted high into the sky and faded into the clouds.

Noella dropped to her knees in a whimper. “It is finished.”

Sydney came beside her and held her close. “It was… beautiful.”

The two sat in silence with only sobs to drown out the sounds of the forest.

Movie Review: The Chair from Alterna Comics

The CHAIR
Director: Chad Ferrin
Production Company:
Film MPAA Rating: NR
Adult: Strong language and violence
94 minutes

Cast: Roddy Piper (They Live),
Naomi Grossman (American Horror Story),
Zach Galligan (Gremlins),

Based on the Alterna Comics graphic novel of the same name, THE CHAIR follows the story of Richard Sullivan, an innocent man struggling to escape execution on death row. Witnessing the savage killings of his fellow inmates at the hand of the prison's sadistic and psychotic Warden, Sullivan decides that the only way to survive is to fight back. But as he matches the brutality occurring in the prison, Sullivan is forced to come face to face with his sanity and his own horrifying past.

“A Visually Disturbing Masterpiece.” - Graphic Policy
“Harrowing.” - Scream Magazine
"Chilling." - Barbara Torretti, DARKVEINS
"Horrifying.” - William Meeker, TFK's WEB OF INDIE HORROR AND SCIENCE FICTION
"Tense. Stellar. Bloody." - Andrew Peters, KINKY HORROR GOON REVIEW
At the end of the post are links showings.

WTF did I just watch?! Well...what I watched through my fingers covering my eyes! There are all kinds of horror movie lovers out there. The Chair is not for the average horror fan. It is visually brutal and disturbing on so many levels. I wondered where I would draw the line when it came to horror films and this movie showed me.

Now, all that aside, it is an interesting movie. There is the obligatory "mommy issue" that all psychopathic killers seem to have, but there is also a unique twist about Sullivan, the main character. Once you get past the horrific and bloody torturing scenes, there is a message about society's eye-for-an-eye view on how the monsters on death row deserve to die. And the fact that psychopaths can find sanctioned ways to carry out their perverted desires.

There were some things that didn't make sense and some scenes that felt like filler. The intro credits lasted for 5 minutes. I haven't read the graphic novel so I can't compare the movie to it, and there is no way I am watching it again to see if I was confused because I missed something.

So, should you see this movie and how do I rate it? I'm not really sure. The Chair is definitely for a certain horror fan, which I am not, so I can't compare it to others of the same type. But based on story, acting, film editing and execution (ha! pun intended) there were some issues, but they had the right idea and you need to take into account this was a small independent film and can't be compared to a major studio production. The movie caused a visceral reaction in me and it is hard to scrub the images from my mind, which is what horror is about.

Not giving a rating because I don't have a reference point of this type of film for comparison, other than

"WTF did I just watch?!" Sheep

Character Confessions: Nyx from Magic Brew by T. Rae Mitchell + giveaway

The character Nyx from T. Rae Mitchell's urban fantasy Magic Brew has a few things to say to her author...
T. Rae: Hi Sharon, I'm really excited to be here on I Smell Sheep! I had it all lined up to have the gang prez, Edge, here with us. But Nyx played the girlfriend card and told him he wouldn't be getting any for the next month if he didn't let her have the spotlight on this one. Apparently, she's had a bone to pick with me for quite some time. Gotta say, I'm a little nervous about it. She might be a petite pixie, but she's scary strong and could easily kick my ass into next year if she wanted to.

Nyx: Don't think I still wouldn't love to. You're just lucky Edge talked me into using my words instead of my fists. The only reason I agreed is because I’m the one who finally ended up with him.

T. Rae: Is that what this is about? You're mad because I hooked him up with Sienna first? And here I thought you could handle the competition.

Nyx: That human's got nothing over me. Unless you count the fact that her legs stopped at my nose. Why'd you have to make her the leggy chick with super-model looks? Why was I the short troll with the eye patch? You know how guys are. They lose their heads around gorgeous girls. Doesn't take a genius to know which one of us Edge was going to want.
T. Rae: Oh now you're just exaggerating. Troll? I hardly think so. I gave you a piercing gray gaze and–

Nyx: One eye does not make for a piercing gaze.

T. Rae: On you it does. Ask Edge. He quaked under your withering glare more than a few times.

Nyx: Great, I can give Medusa a run for her money. Guess I'm in good company. She was a real looker too.

T. Rae: You're hardly a gorgon. I gave you a more unusual beauty, like a cat–sleek, strong and wild. Plus, who has the coolest power next to Edge's? You get to surf through shadow portals and shift solid objects into mist. All that, combined with your loyalty and selfless sacrifice to Edge and the gang, is what made him choose you in the end.

Nyx: Yah, but I had to die to get him to want me more than her.

T. Rae: Does it help that I fixed that little detail?

Nyx: Did you really have to take it to that extreme?

T. Rae: Well…yeah. I had to cause Edge some serious pain. It was the only way to make him pull his head out of his ass and wake him up to a relationship built on trust and the unconditional love you showed him, despite his lingering crush on Sienna.

Nyx: Men.

T. Rae: Yeah, they can be a little dense sometimes.

Nyx: Well, I suppose I can let you off the hook now that you've explained yourself. But when you write the sequel, don't be throwing another girl in the mix. All's good with me and Edge.

T. Rae: –––

Nyx: Really? You're actually going to mess with us?

T. Rae: What can I say? Conflict sells.

They call me Edge, and I'm the only supernatural in New York City with Djinn powers. My gang is known as the Forsaken. We're the throwaways of our kind, despised by purebloods for being mixed breeds. Banishment, rejection and abandonment bind us. Yet our differences are what make us powerful, and close to unstoppable. Until today.

We've been double-crossed. The one person we trusted above all others, lured us into a trap set by a gang of warlocks. They've crippled my powers and tried to enslave me for the rare magic pumping in my veins. I gave them the slip, but now there's a price on my head and the road home is blocked by gangs of shifters, witches, vampires, demons and deadly fae. Odds are good we won't all make it back alive. But you can be damn sure, me and my crew won't go down without a fight.

Enter a dystopian underworld of supernatural gangs and prepare for an action-packed, paranormal adventure filled with sorcery, treachery and forbidden romance.

Perfect for fans of Iron Druid Chronicles and Dresden Files.

T. Rae Mitchell is an incurable fantasy junkie who spent much of her youth mesmerizing her younger sisters with stories sprung from her crazy imagination. Over the years, her craving for the rush of being transported to fantastical realms became more acute. So it was only a matter of time before her habit got the best of her. Grief stricken one day upon discovering her supply had dried up (her favorite bookstore had closed), she decided she’d had enough. Abandoning her career as an award-winning graphic designer, she entered a fantasy world of her own making called, FATE’S FABLES, her debut novel. She lives in British Columbia with her husband and son, and has since released an urban fantasy titled, MAGIC BREW as she continues to work on FATE’S KEEP.
