Cynthia Wise (Eyes if Autumn book tour): Why The Walking Dead Is An Awesome TV Show + giveaway + excerpt

Why The Walking Dead Is An Awesome TV Show

If you’re scratching your head over why The Walking Dead constantly shatters cable records and has remained a must watch for many people across the country, and probably abroad, too, I’m here to tell you why you should jump on the bandwagon.

I suppose the small minority of those who do not watch The Walking Dead find it unappealing because it’s about “stereotypical, scary, people-eating zombies.” Well, The Walking Dead is so much more than that, and there are many people who wouldn’t typically watch a TV show of this genre that can’t get enough of it.

The character development and the terrific plot/storyline is what draws viewers in. Yes, the post-apocalyptic world that the show is set in is chaotic and terrifying, but it is a world that we can easily identify with if we try hard enough. Of course, I’m not talking about trying to picture ourselves being chased by killer zombies. I’m talking about humanity.

Viewers grow to love the characters. I know I certainly have. When fans become invested in the lives of the characters, they place themselves in the same situations – finding themselves rooting for, and often times, crying for their favorites.

We see our strengths and weaknesses reflected in The Walking Dead characters. The show leaves audiences pondering on how they deal with relationships and how they would react when facing death.

I love the show, and I bet if you watch it, you will too!

Love,

Recurring dreams have plagued Katie Hammond since childhood, forcing her to keep an open mind to the paranormal. But when Katie is compelled to follow a forest path during her trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains, she stumbles into a forgotten life – one she’s not sure she wants to remember – and an enthralling man who shouldn’t exist.

At the end of the path is Marcus Hillyerd, a man with a secret and golden eyes. He comes face-to-face with the only woman he’s ever loved. The only problem – she doesn’t remember him.

Then evil from Marcus’s past emerges and attempts to destroy everything he holds sacred. Needing reinforcement, Marcus calls upon Marcel Enterprises, his network of paranormal beings dedicated to helping victims of corruption. Together, they must risk their lives to keep Katie safe and protect the empire that took Marcus more than a century to build.

Excerpt:
Marcus stood on the back of the veranda in the night shadows and listened. In the distance, he heard the faint squawk of radios, voices, and the purr of engines. He had time. Stepping into a sprint, he crossed the garden and was through its door in a matter of seconds. The forest beyond waited and his beast roared inside of him, wanting out. It was exhilarating running at top speed through the trees with night sounds and the scents of animals teasing him. At the edge of the forest, he stopped to observe and took a deep breath. The smell of rotting blood assaulted his nose.

The cabin was shrouded in moonlit darkness. Yellow crime scene ribbon was stretched from post-to-post at the top of the porch steps and across the door. With a swipe of his hand, Marcus pulled them down and gave an experimental twist of the knob. One sharp push splintered the wood at the lock and the door swung open.

The smell of lingering death was like a wall, coating Marcus’s nostrils and tongue, triggering his gag reflex. As he looked around the room, the first thing to draw his eye was a police outline of Angie’s body. His gaze moved on to the trail of blood leading to the loft ladder, and logic told him only one thing would have led Angie in that direction.

With a two-step running leap, Marcus touched a toe to the log wall and propelled himself up and over the railing, landing nimbly with barely a sound. Taking the suitcase with Katie’s scent. He cleared the railing with ease and was soon in the bedroom she’d been using. Within minutes, the closet and drawers were emptied. Leaving the scent of death behind, Marcus pulled the front door shut and broke into a run a she re-entered the forest.

Cynthia H. Wise first conceived the idea for The Marcel Experience years ago. At that time, she wrote stories for her own enjoyment. Inspired at an early age by the paranormal, Cynthia enjoyed having the ability to become someone else, travel to distant places, and experience new things as she wrote.

During the long process of editing her first book, Portrait of Rage, an idea began to take root. Having begun another manuscript years before that she had entitled Eyes of Autumn, Cynthia realized how simple it would be to integrate the two worlds. She envisioned continuing the story and carrying characters from book to book as she continued to introduce new people, new conflicts, and new stories. She realized the list of paranormal subjects was endless. It would be simple to let the story flow from one inexplicable, exciting possibility to another. And voilà—The Marcel Experience was born.

Cynthia H. Wise lives with her husband in Marietta, Georgia, where her series, The Marcel Experience, is centered. When she is not writing novels about the supernatural and the fantastic, Cynthia can be found with her husband, Cliff, their two dogs, Jake and Sadie, and their cockatiel, Sam.

Sheep Talk: The Walking Dead season 6 (TV series), mid-season

***READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. SPOILERS ALL OVER THIS REVIEW!***

The Walking Dead is an American horror drama television series developed by Frank Darabont, based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Andrew Lincoln plays the show's lead character, sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes, who awakens from a months-long coma to confront a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies.Grimes reunites with his family and becomes the leader of a group he forms with other survivors. Together they struggle to survive in and adapt to a world filled with zombies and some humans who are even more dangerous than the zombies themselves.

Katie's Rambling Shambling Thoughts:
Season 6 of The Walking Dead has thus far been a roller coaster ride, if said roller coaster went off the rails on an Ozzy Crazy Train and ended up someplace close to the hells of middle-earth. With zombies, of course. Each season of The Dead has taken on a life (or unlife) all it's own. Season 6 is currently on the same gory dead path of guts and eye popping glory. Do I love it? You bet your back country crossbow booty I do!

Rick and the gang are still in good ole Alexandra, but the dead buddies shambling about are looking to bust through the walls and feast on tasty flesh. It's awesome fun. As the group struggles to break down the soft the residents of Alexandra (as any good army should), you wonder if these peaceful folks are all going to make. Living behind a wall for so long has made most of them soft and jell-o like. Too much mushy-jiggle and not enough hack'em up skills.

As we soon see, trouble is brewing not just outside the walls but behind too. Young Carl is not making many new friends, Morgan is desperately trying to save the human world. Yet failing as I can tell, and Maggie will soon have a baby bump! Thank the zombie gods that Glen did hide under a dumpster, but it's very unclear if he will actually make it back to the group. The tension builds!

So as the mid-season ended, we see the safety walls come crashing down. The group is scattered like rats and now, once again, they are facing incredible odds of survival. But this team is badass to the core, Daryl is bound to show up and save the day! If Daryl dies, we riot!

What keeps me coming back year after year; the human nature and friendships this show has created. It's authentic, brutal, humorous and touchingly raw at times. I've laughed, cried, screamed at the tv and made ninja chop-chop hands in the air. I'll raise my bloody turtle carcass and bite off it's head in their honor!

TV Show Review: Fear the Walking Dead (Pilot)

Fear the Walking Dead (2015– )
TV Series | 60 min | Drama, Horror
Creators: Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman

Stars: Rubén Blades, Mercedes Mason, Cliff Curtis
What did the world look like as it was transforming into the horrifying apocalypse depicted in "The Walking Dead"? This spin-off set in Los Angeles, following new characters as they face the beginning of the end of the world, will answer that question.

I’ll admit I didn’t have that high of expectations going into watching the new Walking Dead spin off (Fear the Walking Dead). I’ve only seen the first season of the Walking Dead and the only reason I even gave the new spin off a chance was because it’s supposed to start before the zombie epidemic which is my favorite part. My biggest grievance with TWD was that it didn’t show the start of the epidemic, just jumped right into the middle of it.

I’m glad that I didn’t just blow off Fear because it had me three minutes in. It starts off right away with gore in a junkie church with a hot shirtless guy running for his life. Fast forward and he’s in the hospital where everyone calls him crazy for saying he saw a girl eat his friend in the church. I spent the entire hour and a half on edge, the show really nails the suspense; it’s like at any moment another infected will pop up. There’s so much clear foreshadowing and it really is the ‘prologue’ to TWD.

The atmosphere is one of sheer terror and suspense as you wait for the outbreak to kick off in te busy downtown LA. Some of the lines are kind of cheesy and there’s definitely the cliché struggling lovers but the ever present fear of zombies makes up for that.

Viral videos of a people attacking EMT workers at the scene of a ‘fatal’ accident, bodies disappearing, rumors of a strange virus striking several different cities and states, missing people flyers everywhere… it can only mean one thing… it’s begun.

Oh and it’s not the flu keeping kids out of school…

The Badass Women of Television

The world of paranormal is hitting television screens hard this year, and the women leading the way are making us all want to join the fight! Here's a few of the badass gals in the supernatural and superfantasy shows.

Sleepy Hollow

Lieutenant Grace Abigail "Abbie" Mills is a sheriff detective in the small, modern-day town of Sleepy Hollow. After being visited by the demon Moloch at a young age, she is the Second Witness of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse that was foretold in the book of Revelation, and one of the two main protagonists on the show. Abbie and Ichabod, along with their fellow comrades, must team up together to prevent the end of days from occurring.

Orphan Black

The series raises issues about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning and its impact on issues of personal identity.

True Blood
Kristin Bauer Van Straten (Pam)
HBO
*Final Season
Pamela "Pam" Swynford De Beaufort is a character in True Blood. As a human, Pam ran the Comstock Brothel in San Francisco. In 1905, she met Eric Northman and begged him to turn her into a vampire out of desparation. After a century together, Pam is fiercely loyal to her maker (Eric), and despite her relative youth as a vampire acts as his second in command in his duties as vampire sheriff of LA: Area 5. She is often blunt when explaining things or dealing with most people, regardless of their species. She has a very morbid sense of humor, with a sweet yet highly lethal charm. She can also be very cold and uncaring when dealing with people and seems apathetic to the concerns of others.

Helix
Kyra Zagorsky (Dr. Julia Walker)
Syfy
Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind's salvation...or total annihilation.
Dr. Julia Walker is a Senior Scientist at the Centers For Disease Control and ex-wife to Dr. Alan Farragut. Brilliant and authoritative, she co-heads the rapid response team's mission to the Arctic Biosystems facility.

The Walking Dead
Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene)
AMC
Maggie Greene is one of the main protagonists and survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. She is the eldest daughter of Hershel and Josephine Greene, and half-sister of Beth. A tomboy and a farmer's daughter with a steely personality and many skills including horseback riding and killing the crap out of walkers (zombies). Maggie proves herself a capable solider with deep loyalty to her loved ones. She is married to Glenn.

The Walking Dead
Danai Gurira (Michonne)
AMC
Michonne is one of the main protagonists and survivor of the outbreak in AMC's The Walking Dead. A Katana-wielding survivor who tends to work alone and keeps much of her past secret. Michonne is a killing machine who can handle herself in just about any situation. Deadly with her blade!

Game of Thrones
Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen)
HBO
Daenerys Targaryen, sometimes called Dany by her brother Viserys, is a major character played by starring cast member Emilia Clarke, and debuts in the series premiere. She is the only surviving child of King Aerys II Targaryen, who was ousted from the Iron Throne during Robert's Rebellion. Her marriage to Drogo and subsequent interaction with the Dothraki people gives her the confidence and strength to lead and the belief in herself as the rightful queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She has proven herself as a leader and a conqueror through her swift and (for the most part) merciful conquests of the Free Cities of Astapor and Yunkai. She is the mother of dragons.

Supernatural
Alaina Huffman (Abaddon)
Abaddon is one of only two remaining Knights of Hell, the other being her retired master, Cain. Abaddon is single-handedly responsible for the extinction of the original Men of Letters. She arrived in the present through time travel in her hunt for Henry Winchester and the key of the Order of Letters he was entrusted with, but failed to retrieve it, with Henry's grandsons Sam and Dean Winchester taking it instead. Upon discovering the shameful state Hell had fallen into in her absence, however, Abaddon abandoned her hunt for the key and began a crusade to take over Hell herself to remake the world as she saw fit—with herself as Queen of Hell, ruling over demons, angels, and humans alike.

Lost Girl
Anna Silk (Bo)
Lost Girl is a Canadian supernatural crime drama television series that focuses on the gorgeous and charismatic Bo, a supernatural being called a succubus who feeds on the energy of humans, sometimes with fatal results. Refusing to embrace her supernatural clan system and its rigid hierarchy, Bo is a renegade who takes up the fight for the underdog while searching for the truth about her own mysterious origins.- Written by M.A. Lovretta

Phoenix Comicon 2013: Michael Rooker Q&A panel

You know and love him from AMC's The Walking Dead, where he played the redneck wild-man Merle Dixon. From films like Cliffhanger, Mallrats and Tombstone. The one and only Michael Rooker was loud and proud at Phoenix Comicon 2013.

When I sat down to transcribe this panel, I quickly realized anyone who reads it would never be able to get all the nuances of his energetic personality. Case in point, see below.

With that in mind, I decided to attach the amazing video shot during the charismatic panel.

Great Quotes from Michael:

"Rooker, go run through those woods and pick up about 50 ticks then let us burn them off you with a torch!"

"Little Merle don't do yard work. If you step on to my yard, perhaps."

"Waa waa, meow, ruff ruff, hoo-hoo."

"Give me a real gun, I want a horse that likes me and I want dancing girls!"

"I never have any plans, that's my life story."

Sheep Review: Walking Dead Magazine #1

Walking Dead- The Official Magazine Issue #1

This is the perfect compilation for any Walking Dead fan! I must say, the Walking Dead universe is expanding at the pace of a wild fire and this is one fire I hope doesn’t burn out. I found the magazine to be a fun reading experience and it contains just so much about all the different venues of the Walking Dead universe! It covers the show, the behind the scenes of the show, the books, the comics, the games (which by the way, super excited for The Walking Dead video game where we play as Daryl Dixon!), the action figures and collectibles, short stories, insider tid bits, interviews, notes to the editors, and great eye catching artwork of the zombies we’ve come to love.

I was pleased to see this wasn’t a quick read through kind of magazine, where you basically are just looking at images. You can tell the creators and writers really put time and effort into giving the fans a hearty reading…along with some great images and visuals along the way to keep the attention.
In this issue there’s in depth interviews with the awesome Michonne, actress Danai Gurira (who doesn’t love Michonne and her trusty katana!?), the creator Mr. Robert Kirkman (um, shall I just bow before you?? Would that be ok?), my nerd crush Chris Hardwick (host of The Talking Dead), Showrunner Glen Mazzara, and the wonderful artist Charlie Adlard who we’ve all come to appreciate his zombies in the comics (along with other comics).

This magazine really offers a little of everything and I’d recommend it for any Walking Dead fan out there, it’s definitely worth purchasing and I think after having read the first issue…I’m hooked and I’m sure you’ll be hooked as well!

One of the sections that was a fun addition that I think anyone would get a kick out of is “The Secret Diary of A Walker”, I think it’d be great to see this section expanded…if not, it’s still an entertaining bit to read from the walker’s perspective.

The next issue looks like it’ll contain a lot of great material and with the Walking Dead having premiered last week; the premier of this magazine, the release of Road to Woodbury, Walking Dead: Episode Four- Around Every Corner (video game), new Walking Dead toys and collectibles coming out to Toys r Us and such…well…it’s a great time to be a fan of The Walking Dead!

Sheep Comic Review: The Walking Dead #100

Walking Dead Volume 100- Something to Fear Part Four
Creator/Writer: Robert Kirkman
Penciler/Inker: Charlie Adlard
Editor: Sina Grace

Previously:
The group mourned the loss of Abraham. Glenn convinced Maggie to move to the Hilltop. Rick recruited a small team to inform the Hilltop community of Negan's attach, suspecting the timing would work in his favor. He was wrong.

First off congrats to Robert Kirkman and crew on making it to the big 100! That's a great milestone, hopefully many more to come! Second off- HOLY CRAP. That's seriously about all I can think right at this moment! haha Kirkman and crew did not let down for the big 100.

They've been building the tension with the Something To Fear story arc and in Part Four (#100) we are finally introduced to the newest bad guy in town, named Negan and is the leader of The Saviors. Negan is this foul mouthed, leather clad rockabilly demented a%*hole, who clearly is power tripping and evil. Sad thing for Rick's camp is that Negan's camp is way more twisted (so it appears....although if you've been keeping up with the books you know Rick and his camp- especially Rick, are pretty twisted mofos themselves) and has way more muscle than Rick and his camp have. Negan basically has a psychopathic army at his disposal.

Now without giving too much away for those who haven't read it yet...Rick and some of our beloved characters are in a van on their way to the Hilltop, when they get a midnight surprise while enroute. Also a character we've all grown to love on the show and in the book meets a terrible demise. That's all I'm going to say...that and I'll admit there was some kind of liquid substance that came out of my eyeball. Could have been my allergies or it could have been the brutal death, not entirely sure- all I know is I didn't see it coming and it's hella sad yo.

With that said the cover for Part 4 (out of 9 covers they created for the big 100, which I'm including and as you can see there are some pretty awesome covers!) is a hint as to what weapon does the dirty deed and that all this tension building paid off and #100 does not disappoint. While saddened, I'm excited to see the next story arc and see where it takes our fearless leader Rick and his beloved camp. I'm hoping our one armed bandit channels his inner Rambo and goes bat sh#! crazy on The Saviors.

I give Something To Fear Part Four 4.5 battered zombie sheep brains

Comic Review: The Walking Dead #99-Something to Fear part 3

The Walking Dead #99-
Something to Fear part 3
Story by:Robert Kirkman
On Sale: June 20,2012
Genres:Horror, Zombies

"SOMETHING TO FEAR" CONTINUES!
The unthinkable happens, as we all gear up for next month's monumental issue 100!

Previously in The Walking Dead #98, Abraham was murdered in cold blood by Negan's Saviors during a supply run with Eugene. There was a tense standoff at the Community gates, and the Saviors ultimately retreated. Rick had no immediate plan of action following the standoff.

Over the course of the "Something to Fear" arc the tension has been building between the Saviors and the Community and we've yet to see the puppet master behind the Saviors. Judging by the motley crew that makes up the Saviors I can only imagine how delightful Negan shall be. Book #99 is more tension building than anything, I'm sure Kirkman and crew are building the suspense so by the time we get to #100 (The big 100! Woo!) it's just going to snap and rain down some crazy delicious drama and gore (fingers crossed at least).

I for one am excited to see what unfolds because at the end of #99 we find Rick and some of the Community leaving the safety of their compound while the nasty Saviors are hidden watching and waiting for dawn to attack. Will Rick and crew make it back in time before the attack? Will Carl finally get to take off that damn head bandage? Rick and Andrea!? Will we finally get to see this baddie Negan we've been constantly hearing about? Questions, questions- tensions are building and I don't know about you, but I'm ready for something big and bloody!

There was minimal zombie killing going on in #99, but this friendly game of baseball made for Zombie Kill of the Week (care for an eyeball with that?).

R.I.P. Abraham Ford, you and your glorious 'stache will be missed.

PhoenixComicon 2012- John Bernthal Panel

I Smell Sheep is bringing you all the fun from PhoenixComicon 2012 and today is no slacker! Actor John Bernthal, who played the bad guy you loved to hate, sat down to take on some Q&A from the lively Walking Dead fans.

Before John had a chance to even begin those questions and answers the announcer mentioned that during a previous fan panel called 'The Talking Walking Dead' it was decided that Rick should have killed his wife Lori and kept Shane. John's reaction and the exuberant audience will take it away from here...

John: So what do I think Rick should have done?
[Audience yell out] Kill Andrea! Keep the bromance!
John: *laughing* Keep the bromance huh? Yeah...You know I think that he did what he had to do. I think that there is a lot of discussion and arguments back and forth and myself and Andy on one side and the writers on the other about how The Walking Dead season should end for Shane. We did sort of verge off the comic a little bit, it was open a little bit for interpration. I really think that Rick brought Shane out into the woods to take this final step.

There was an alternate that I pitched that we almost got but we didn't get it. Which if you want to hear it I will tell you. [Audience cheers] I am going to get in trouble for this but I'm off the show now so...

The idea that we pitched was, everything was still the same, that when Shane talked to Lori by the windmill and she tells him 'thank you' that was everything Shane wanted to hear. But he still knows he has to kill the prisoner Randall, but he has to kill him to keep Lori and Carl and his unborn baby safe. Same thing happens they go looking in the woods. They stop and Rick says "why did you stop" then Shane says "I killed the prisoner". They draw guns and Shane says, "I'm right here, let's fight for Lori. I'm the father." All that kind of stuff. As in the show Rick takes his gun and says, "I'm not going to fight you." Now here is the first change. Instead of holding his gun out he tosses it away and says "Hey look you're going to have to shoot an unarmed man". So this makes Shane go crazy. Shane approaches Rick and says, "You've got a broken woman and a weak boy," and adds something disgusting like, "I know what your wife tastes like".
[audience laugh]
He's really pushing Rick to get him to do it. But now the same thing happens except Rick goes for the gun to shoot Shane and the gun's not loaded. The gun just goes: click, click, click.
[Audience whoo and ahh]
Then out of nowhere Carl blasts him. See Shane never had it in him to kill Rick. He did all that because he knew he was already so far gone and becoming a cancer for the group. But what's cool is that I'm glad they did what they did. I really believe that Shane didn't have it in him. I don't think you pull a gun on Rick unless you're ready to use it.

Question: How was it working with the zombies?
John: I really hate zombies. [Audience laughs] I'll be honest with you, I don't want you to think I'm some douchey method actor but I spent so long running from them and trying to kill them that I just sort of ended up really hating them. I love the people who played the zombies, great actors who worked really hard. The show would not be what it is without Greg Nicotero's team and the staff that made the zombies and the performers that play them. So I love those guys but I hate zombies.

Question: How did you like playing the badass?
John: You know man, it's cool. He's a great character and an honor to play him. I wanted desperately to play that part. I'm a relatively new actor and it was the first year that I turned down other shows that I got because I had an audition for The Walking Dead which is a pretty stupid risk as an actor. I would not suggest that if you're going into the field. But I had to tell my agent that I had to try for this show because I had never read anything like it. It was an honor to play him. It was the honor of my career so far to play Shane.

Question: Did you read the comic books?
John: Well, like I said I wanted desperately to be in the show I had not read the comic books. The I fought and fought to get that far like 6 auditions then I finally got. They gave me the comic book and I went home and cracked that sucker open and said "OH MY GOD!" I had time to eat one sandwich and by the time the sandwich was done he was dead. [Audience laugh] So I was glad they decided to keep him around longer.

Commenter: For the Walking Talking Dead they did last night they decided to keep Lori around as a breeder.
[Audience laughs uncontrollably]
John: *laughing* As a Breeder?!

Question: When you were on the show who was your favorite person to work with?
John: Wow. So many. Shoot. That's a great question, I really love them all in different ways. Andy Lincoln is like my partner, I love that guy so much. He's as good a guy as he is an actor. Norman's my man. I love them all. Jeff Dumunn, him, and I are shooting L.A. Noir right now and it's pretty cool being in a scene with him and all of a sudden I'm like, "What's up Dale?" and he'll say, "Shut up Shane". [Audience laugh] I love working with him too. We really got lucky with this one, everyone is really game.

I remember our first day I was working with Norman Reedus and he showed up and we had to wrestle that day. I hadn't meet him yet and I was like, "Hey man I'm going to really grab you." And he said, "Grab away." He was just game as hell and said if we are going to fight let's fight. There's no stunt guys on our show you're either that type of actor or you're not.

Question: Who is your favorite character on The Walking Dead?
John: Beside Shane? You gotta love Daryl right?
[Audience cheer. Person transcribing this makes cat calls very, very loudly.]
I really wish that Shane had that possibility of a friendship with Daryl explored more.
[Someone in audience yells] What about Lori?
John: What about Lori? I love her. But I love her in a different way.
[Audience laugh]

Question: Who do you think is the father of Lori's baby?
John: Shane. *fist pumps*
[Loud laughter]
