TV Show Review: RAISED BY WOLVES

RAISED BY WOLVES (2020 - )
Sep 3, 2020
Executive Producers: Aaron Guzikowski, Adam Kolbrenner, David W. Zucker, Jordan Sheehan, Ridley Scott, Robyn Meisinger, Mark Huffam
Cast: Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Winta McGrath, Niamh Algar, Jordan Loughran, Matias Varela
TV Network: HBO Max
Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy
From executive producer Ridley Scott, Raised by Wolves centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.

As many of you probably also recently subscribed to HBO Max for Wonder Woman 1984, I now have access to the other goodies on the site. While I may not keep HBO long term, I wanted to get the most bang for my buck before canceling the service. Which lead me to Doom Patrol and then Raised by Wolves. Though I am a hardcore lover of vampires, the title of the show threw me off. But that was short-lived, no actual wolves are in the show. (thank the vampire gods)

Talk about a hardcore style sci-fi, holey freaking damn moley this show had me hooked from the first episode. Even though, to be quite honest, I had no damn clue what was going on. It's one of those shows that spoon-feeds you the tasty bits. I wanted the whole damn meal, and the freaking take-home baggy. What I did not expect at all was how awesome this show was going to be. So many twists and turns, so many meaningful and unique characters, so beautifully acted and executed. I can't say how much I enjoyed this show!

It's dark and it makes no apologies, you might get stabbed in the back or your throat sliced. You just never know what's coming and you love every second of the anticipation. The android characters are riveting! Mother is a badass and I loved every single thing about her, the good programs, and the ALL the bad. Watching her command the scene was everything I could have wished for in a sci-fi thriller style show. I can only hope that the second season is coming soon, cause my budget won't allow me to keep indulging long term. But hey, for now, this was one hell of a ride.

TV Show Review: Swamp Thing: Season 1

Swamp Thing: Season 1
Network: CW, Oct 8, 2020
Exec. Producers: James Wan, Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear, Len Wiseman
Cast: Crystal Reed, Andy Bean, Derek Mears, Virginia Madsen, Henderson Wade, Maria Sten
Genre: Action & Adventure, Superhero fiction, Horror fiction, Drama
Original Network: DC Universe, May 31, 2019
While looking into an epidemic in her Louisiana hometown, CDC investigator Abby Arcane discovers that the local swamps hold numerous secrets after her partner seemingly dies and transforms into Swamp Thing.

Let me start by saying I haven't read DC's Swamp Thing comics. So I don't know what's cannon.

I decided not to review Swamp Thing after watching the first episode. I wasn't sure how I felt and wanted to give it a few more episodes...then I watched episode 2. Oh yeah, this is my kind of show.

Episode 1 is slow. They have to set up the characters and you find out who becomes the Swamp Thing and why. In episode 2 we jump right into the dark, supernatural side of the show. This is pure drama, horror, creepy, action stuff. Think Supernatural without the funny parts. But that's okay! We are losing Supernatural soon, and while this isn't the same, it can soften the blow.

Swamp Thing was made for the DC Universe streaming service which failed. Leaving it and many other shows homeless. Most went to HBO but the CW bought Swamp Thing. It is obvious it wasn't made for network TV. Lots of cussing (which is censored) and some pretty intense violence which might be censored a bit. There is a high creep factor! Even I got the heebie-jeebies.

I am looking forward to watching more and hope there will be another season!

Sheep Talk: The Flash (TV series) season 2, so far

***SPOILERS ALL OVER THIS REVIEW. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!***

The Flash is an American television series developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, airing on The CW. It is based on the DC Comics character Barry Allen / Flash, a costumed superhero crime-fighter with the power to move at superhuman speeds. It is a spin-off from Arrow. The series follows Allen, portrayed by Grant Gustin, a crime scene investigator who gains super-human speed, which he uses to fight criminals, including others who have also gained superhuman abilities.

Katie's Speedy Thoughts:
The CW is  doing an awesome job of creating fun action-packed programming for a young and old audience. The Flash is one of those shows. This is a series I can sit down and enjoy with my 9 year old son. With the exception of a little kissy-kissy here and there, it's one show that doesn't try and push the envelope with sex scenes.

Season 2 of The Flash started out a little meh for me, Barry Allen and gang felt a tad too staged. They joked about every badguy or gal being able to waltz into Star Labs, how they beefed up security. But then what do ya know...EVERY bad person just walked right into the lab. So I'm not sure why they even made a joke about it, since that's just something the writers are ok with doing. Time and again.

Aside from easy access, the show itself has decided to add a big twist in the form of Earth 2. That's an alternate reality Earth for those less informed about all things realm related. Time travel and portal jumping seem to be the MO but that's fine with me. Long as it's all written in an authentic and believable way, I can deal. Barry and his dad had some funky moments when he finally got set free from jail. That felt a little odd and disjointed, but be that as it may this is still one show that's just plain fun!

Will Barry fall in love with his new galfriend or is his heart still with Iris? Can they actually defeat Zoom and his band of merry mad men? I haven't a clue. Guess we have to watch and see!

Sharon's Rapid Review:
Katie pretty much nailed it. This is a fun show to watch with my family...okay, my 14 year old daughter is watching because Barry is cute. I'm loving all the villains. And can't wait for the Legends of Tomorrow spin-off...Captain Cold!

The series can be kind of cheesy at times but the superhero/villain action scenes are fun. I really don't like Barry's new gal friend. She seems like a plot device of some sort and probably will end up dead...like that "other" chick from that "other" show... <G>

Sheep TV Review: The Flash - Season 1

The Flash (2014)
Season 1
The CW Network
Premise
After witnessing his mother's supernatural murder and his father's wrongful conviction for the crime, Barry Allen is taken in by Detective Joe West and his family. Allen becomes a brilliant but socially awkward crime scene investigator for the Central City Police Department. His obsession with his tragic past causes him to become an outcast among his peers; he investigates cold cases, paranormal occurrences, and cutting-edge scientific advancements that may shed light on his mother's murder.

***SPOILERS READ WITH CAUTION***

The Flash is based on a DC Comic character, while I'm not a fan of DC Comics overall, that sure didn't stop me from falling in love with this fresh and fun new show!

Our story revolves around the mid-twenty something crime scene tech Barry Allen and a freak accident that turns him into something really amazing. But really, most freak accidents happen to create amazing heroes, both for the side of good and evil. The nerdy guy has no idea how much his life is about to change, but you get the watch the whole thing from day one!

The CW did a great job of setting this whole world up, plus promos and reaching out to a ripe comic fan base at present. Barry Allen is cleverly introduced on their other show Arrow and the two shows crossover continue throughout season one. So fans of both shows can of course get into all the action.
We now interrupt this post for a shirtless Arrow break. You're welcome.
We soon find out that Barry is not the only person who was affected by a crazy lighting storm/particle mumbo jumbo thingy of sorts. What they end up calling "Metahumans" are others who were also changed in some fashion. At some point I'm sure we will see the full array of folks with powers. Though you do tend to just see a lot more of the bad guys and gals. Hey, with great power and all that….
What keeps me coming back? The amazing writing, awesome special effects and character development on many different levels. You have Barry and his "stuck in the big house" dad, Barry and his adopted Dad, Barry and his kinda adopted sister and their whole dynamic, Barry and the loss of his Mom, Barry and his wise cracking science team buddies and Barry trying to learn how to control all this power he has.
Plus, evil master minds out to plot their badness and time travel/alternate reality maneuvering. It's all done with flare and written in a way that any one can understand what's going on. It's not simple minded but direct. You don't need to know the comics at all, I don't know the comics! But I know that I love this new show.
The only character that ends up bugging me is a big ape called Grodd. He also walks around saying "I am Grodd!". WHICH is really close to my boy Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy and his whole "I am Groot." routine. So…yeah was not a big fan of the monkey business banana hater. Thankfully, it's not much you see of him.

If you're looking for a new show to watch, I recommend this one for pretty much all ages. With the exception of one steamy/sexy episode my 8 year old was able to watch this whole season with me.

KD

Sharon's take: Katie pretty much summed it all up and I agree. Our family watches the show together too. I think my 14 year old daughter has a little Barry crush <G>. The cool thing, there's going to be a spin-off of The Flash and Arrow called Legends of Tomorrow that will feature the Atom (hey, Ray! ) Martin Stein, Captain Cold and Heatwave, Firestorm, and the new super heroes Hawkgirl and White Canary, taking on Vandal Savage.

Double Sheep Review: Outlander (TV Series)

What is Outlander?

Follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate relationship is ignited that tears Claire's heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. Based on the novel by author Diana Gabaldon.

The first 8 episodes (mid-season break)

Katie's take on the Show

Honestly, I've not read the book series to this story. So Donna will have more insight and comparison then I would. However, I have been invested in the TV series thus far and have lots to say about that!

First and foremost, this series is visually stunning! The camera usage and natural scenes are out of this realm. The background that is Scotland becomes a character in the show, there is just no other way to describe it. The world would not be what it is if you let's say...taped this in Hollywood on a closed set. It just could not live and breathe in that type of restricted environment.

The musical score adds all the heartfelt drama you could expect. It's touching and intense at the same time. The fine line between too much and just right is walked and it's always refreshing to know that you don't need to make something that shouts in your face.

Costumes are clever and accurate, not like I'm an expert or anything but they look like what you would expect to see in either of the time worlds they jump back and forth too. I want to get my hands on some of those dresses!

How many TV shows are out there with old school Scotts, time travel and romance? I can't think of one. (Does Dr. Who count?) And who cares, they are not Outlander!

My one BIG issue with this story is our leading lady Claire. From the start, she's getting into some trouble. Men are attacking her left and right. I don't know how many times you can accost or rape a gal before she just jumps off a damn cliff! Was the book like this? I don't know, ask Donna!

Let me tell you though, it's getting tiring watching her being beaten down by almost all the men in her life. Suck much? Yeah, sure does!

Aside from that, hats and kilts off to all the actors. The good guys, the bad guys and all the misfits in the middle. This show has loads of depth and character dialog. Talk about not rushing, at times you almost want them to hurry the hell up! But that's due to a "want it now culture". It's nice to take it slow, ride the pony until we can handle the racehorse.

I love this show and I can't wait for it to pick back up!

Katie

Donna’s Take on the Show

As a fan of Ron Moore, ever since watching Battlestar Gallactica, and reading Diana Gabaldon, I was quite excited when I heard Outlander was being made into a series. When I found out it would air on Starz, I was overjoyed. Knowing from past viewing experience with Starz shows, they don’t normally hold back. I wasn’t disappointed this time either.

So far, it has surpassed my expectations. As Katie already mentioned, the visuals are insanely beautiful and also credible. Everything about the series seems well thought out, down to the simplest little details. If you like period pieces, you can’t help but be drawn in by the history.

Now, as we all know, books don’t always make the translation to screen very well. If possible, in this instance, I find myself liking the show better than I did the book. As anyone who’s read Outlander knows, it’s a lengthy tome. So far the series has managed to take the best of the book and bring it to life in a way that feels authentic to the story and highlights its strongest points.

There are additions in the series that never took place in the book, which really developed some of the secondary characters. When the Highlanders defend Claire’s honor, I was like wow. That was such an intriguing scene and felt like it completely belonged but never existed. The parts of the book that were cut, at least for me, didn’t lessen the story at all.

If I were to get super picky and try and find flaws, I think the only complaint I have is the constant close call with rape. It’s starting to get a bit tiresome for me. Somehow in the book, it didn’t seem as often as it does on the big screen, high-definition TV. I just can’t figure out why it’s bothering me so much now, lol.

Even with that one tiny complaint that I feel guilty about even writing since I’m a huge fan, this is five star viewing all the way. If you like period pieces, romance, political intrigue or action, basically, if you have any interests at all, I would suggest you give this show a try. It’s quickly become one of my all time favorites.
