Sheep Book Review: Heart of a Wolf (A Wicked Series Book 2) by K.D. Friedrich + giveaway

Heart of a Wolf (A Wicked Series Book 2)
by K.D. Friedrich
3/12/18
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Number of pages: 283
Word Count: 92400
He's bringing his mate home and he's not taking no for an answer.

It's a whole new world for the supernatural community. Their existence has been thrust into the spotlight and not everyone is thrilled.

Winter Leery has been away from home for ten years. Betrayed by her mate, she sought a new life on the east end of Long Island, New York far away from the pain and embarrassment of his rejection. A witch born with the gift to sooth a shifter's beast, she was recruited, trained, and inducted into the elite guard, sworn to protect the supernatural community and humans alike. A dangerous job she's kept hidden from her overprotective family for the last decade.

But, thanks to a crazed witch and his cruel vampire partner, her secret is out, her estranged mate is back, and her once under-active libido is suddenly raging like an inferno.

Tristan, alpha to his pack, has had his work cut out for him these last few years. With hate groups rising up all over the east coast, mating heat riding him hard, and his father hounding him to claim his mate, he's holding on by a thin thread. Unfortunately, his true mate left him ten years ago and he doubts she'll be back. He screwed up where Winter is concerned. For years, he's ignored his mating heat, refusing to force her return, but now, she's disappeared. With his protective instincts raging, he rushes to Long Island's east end to begin the hunt for the one woman he has never forgotten.

This time, he's bringing his mate home and he's not taking no for an answer.

Heart of a Wolf is the second installment  from the very talented K.D. Friedrich, after the well received debut Passion of a Witch (Book 1) I was excited to get this PNR.

Loads of tangible and layered pages to love here. I had a blast getting to know these realistic characters and each ones own personal touch. The plot was well hashed out and knew exactly where it was going. You don't have to be a big name author to write some fantastic PNR, I was so pleased to once again not have any let down feelings or wishes for more.

While I am not a big fan of the wolves (cause Vampires are the best!), Tristan is just hands down HOT. He had just about every alpha quality that I long for. Complex but strong. His sparks with Winter were steamy and I loved every minute of it.  Romance done right!

This story is short enough to get the reader hooked and I liked that. Sometimes you don't need those filler pages, if a writer can rock it like this.....that's all you need.

Certainly recommend this one to readers looking for a new saga!

Book Reviews: Wicked (Damned Book 2) by L.M. Pruitt

Wicked (Damned Book 2)
by L.M. Pruitt

181 pages

The bestselling series which proves there's no rest for the wicked continues....

All things truly wicked start from innocence.—Ernest Hemingway

Being a demon isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Especially when you make a massive mistake your first month on the job.

Even more so when your sister is one of the all-star players on the other team.

Add in the rumors of not one but two coups and it’s not hard to see—something wicked this way comes….

Southern belle Julie is a newly created succubus. Having traded her eternal soul for a life of passion and glamour, Julie is still learning to navigate the complex dynamics of her new reality. In this second installment, Julie is given a covert assignment to uncover details of a brewing coup among the ranks of incubi and succubi. As a succubus turned spy, Julie is continually forced to compromise her relationships and very existence to deliver intel to Abby, hell’s second in command. Amidst her attempts to please her boss, Julie is also desperately trying to forge a unique identity for herself. As the sister of a heavenly heavy hitter, and the lover of a hellish heavyweight, Julie struggles for autonomy and self-preservation.

I am loving this series. I like Julie as the main character, an anti-hero of sorts. Julie isn’t perfect, not even close, and I like that. I get to lose myself in a character who makes the bad choices and the fallout is oh so entertaining. Julie’s southern charm and manners contrast humorously with her wild sexual abandon. She becomes something of a walking contradiction, but instead of inciting frustration, her follies create intrigue. Because Julie is such a wild card, I really have no clue where all this is leading and I find that refreshing.

This book is full of sex. Like, full. And it’s descriptive. And, at times, unconventional. Surprisingly, though, it works and, for the most part, an integral part of the story. So, if liberal sex isn’t your thing, steer clear.

Book one ends in a cliff-hanger, a technique I don’t care for. With this installment, while there are some major question marks, the transition to book three, Ruin, has been more interestingly set. I can’t wait.

Sheep Book Review: Wicked (A Wicked Trilogy Book 1) by Jennifer Armentrout

Wicked (A Wicked Trilogy Book 1)
By: Jennifer Armentrout
New Adult/Paranormal Romance
Pages: 300

Plot:
Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

The first few pages of this story had me wondering why I downloaded the book. Was my "shop on a whim" a waste? Did I pull the unlucky number from the wizards hat? I was nervous, but by the end of the second chapter...it hooked me. Sold. Completely absorbed. What a find this one was!

I didn't have a clue about the author or her writing ability, taking that reading leap of faith can be a let down sometimes. But not here, not today and not with this new series!

The overall feel of this story is very NOLA, and as someone who's been to the big easy I loved that. The food, the smells, the music, the vibe, the author does a wonderful job of implanting that city into these pages. It all jumped off and grabbed me, made me want to head back to the French Quarter! (*Update, I ended up making Beignets at home!)

The story itself is fresh and fun, steamy with romance, snarky and outright wild at times. It's a big mix of the action packed excitement and sexy-alpha men who can give that hot romance. I love the build that some couples can exhibit, this pair is magnetic. A strong female lead who I hope will only grow more as the series progresses. She's not a damsel in distress and doesn't need a man to save her. Thank the gods for that!

The Fae in this series are BAD, and I mean soul sucking ruin your day with some death bad. They are from a place called Otherworld, which is a realm that wants to bust through to the human side and suck us all dry. No straws needed. I'm good on the soul sucking, thanks.

This group of Order members are our only hope to save the world and all that we love. I could not have asked for more in this saga. You kind of know what's coming, but the misdirection that's thrown now and then makes the writing magician really work the crowd for that shock and awe factor! Suspensions are confirmed by the end and it only adds to the overall hook on this engaging adventure.

A sweet toothed fairy may have stolen the whole show, the added comic relief was spot on. Whacky side characters wanted and loved in my book!

I wanted more to read and can't wait to see what happens next!
