New Release: Demon's Bluff (Hollows Book 18) by Kim Harrison

“Blends the best qualities of Anita Blake and Stephanie Plum. . . . Kim Harrison carries it off with style.”—Jim Butcher, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Dresden Files series on the Hollows series

Demon's Bluff (Hollows Book 18)

by Kim Harrison
Rachel Morgan must go on a deadly journey—into the past—in the next thrilling Hollows novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

What’s a witch to do when the coven of moral and ethical standards demands she untwist a curse—but an essential spell component no longer exists? There’s only one choice: go back in time.

Caught between self-exile and an Alcatraz cell, Rachel must find an Atlantean mirror to reverse the curse and prove to Cincinnati’s brand-new witch coven that, no, she does not practice illicit magic. Unfortunately, the only mirror of its kind in existence belonged to the insane demon Newt, forcing Rachel to go to the past to bargain with her for it.

But the time-travel spell goes awry, dragging Elyse, the young leader of the coven, into the past with Rachel. They expect to land five years in the past but instead arrive two days before Rachel’s long-lost love, Kisten, dies. Heartbroken and torn, Rachel knows she can't change the past.

Even with no allies, Rachel still has one thing going for her: Cincinnati is her city, now and forever. If she can find a way to work with Newt and prevent Elyse from becoming the demon’s next familiar, they might all get home.

About the Author:
I'm Kim Harrison, best known for penning the Hollows series though I've tried my hand at YA, traditional fantasy, graphic novels, and a one-of-a-kind world book. I grew up reading science fiction and fairytales, which means my fairy garden has Daleks in it. Recently, I've moved back to my home state of Michigan after a ten year stint down in South Carolina, and it feels good to be home--even with the snow and cold. I've been traditionally published for almost twenty years, and a good day is still one where there is nothing to distract me from my keyboard.

Kim Harrison is best known as the author of the New York Times #1 best selling Hollows series, but she has written more than urban fantasy and has published more than two-dozen books spanning the gamut from young adult, accelerated-science thriller, several anthologies, and has scripted two original graphic novels set in the Hollows universe. She has also published traditional fantasy under the name Dawn Cook. Kim is currently working on a new Hollows book between other, non related, urban fantasy projects.

Book Review: Blood Cull (A novel of the Demon Accords Book 18) by John Conroe

by John Conroe
Sept 2, 2022
Pages: 379
Before the end, there is often change, and change can be very painful. Declan and Stacia come face-to-face with the most powerful elemental of them all, one with the power to eliminate mankind before the Vorsook ever show up. It’s time to confront his destiny, and decide what it means to be the most powerful witch of all time.

Blood cull brings us face-to-face with some real dire situations for Declan, Stacia and all of humankind. Declan and the team strategize on how to survive a Vorsook attack which is imminent when the most powerful elemental of all the elementals shows up and changes everything. One thing is for sure, if humans and the supernatural don’t work together, there will be no planet left.

I have been Conroe’s books for years and I have to say this one might be the best one yet. It challenges readers to think about where our world is right now and many of the social, political, and world events are front and center in this story. This book is so well written. It’s thoughtful but yet the story is still excellent, and the book is a breeze to read. I look forward to seeing what the next book in the series brings.

Conroe wrote his first readable novel, God Touched, right after finishing his daughter's copy of Twilight and muttering: "Vampires don't farging sparkle!"

With seven more books in the series and a stand alone novel (Black Frost), he doesn't seem to be slowing down. He cut his reading teeth on the likes of Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, JRR Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Andre Norton, and H. Beam Piper.

Financial professional by day and author by night (actually by morning), he bangs out his stories with fingers that are usually sore from forge burns or getting beat up at the dojo.

Book Review: Storm (Reed Security, #18) by Giulia Lagomarsino + giveaway

Storm (Reed Security, #18)
by Giulia Lagomarsino
October 23rd 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Storm is book 18 in the Reed Security Series and should be read in order.

Storm
I had one job, get Jessica “Rabbit” Finley to sell her property to Reed Security. I could do that. I was Army Strong. Hell, I took down bad guys for a living. I could handle this sexy vixen. No problem. Except, she’s a little crazy. She thinks that there are ghosts on her property, and she has the men at Reed Security believing her too. But then I found out her history and it had me wondering….Was she really crazy?

Jessica
I’ve never known who I really am. My family history has been contorted into something that I can only hope to unravel in my lifetime. But then I got a clue that led me to buy this creepy insane asylum. I was told there were answers here and I’m finding them, along with ghosts that still haunt this estate. There’s an upside, though. There’s a sexy man here to keep me company. But the closer I get to finding my answers, the closer I get to being locked up in the asylum myself.

What a read! From page 1 I was hooked and completed in one day. This could be classified as a Ghost Story, a romantic comedy or a romance novel. Lots of snark, anxiety, romance and comedy fill these pages. I would summarize the story but you can do that from the cover note and I would rather review the author and the writing.

I have not heard of this author and didn’t do any research prior to reading this book. Thought I would go in blind and get a fresh look at a new (to me) writer. I didn’t even pay any attention to the author’s name. Glad I didn’t because I kept going back and forth on whether the author was male or female, which made me anxious to finish and find out just who this person was!

Great writing and although a lot of it was what I would classify as “locker room vocabulary” I couldn’t get enough of the comedic male interactions. It definitely is a romance but you will find yourself laughing out loud. I will probably be thinking of some of the sections a month from now and I will still laugh about it. Some of the things about “relationships” were so on point I had to read it to my husband and he had the same reaction. It reminds me of a good comedian on stage that uses everyday situations to entertain an audience. The words just flowed and I could envision each situation, no contradiction, no confusion. Didn’t need to think about what the author was intending to portray, just read and enjoyed.

After I finished I found out the author was FEMALE! Wow, see, we women do know how a man’s mind works! At lease this author does. She did an exemplary job of capturing the angst, anxiety and thought processes of the male psyche before during and after a relationship. Of course the ending is predictable but the journey was definitely the best ride in the amusement park!

I also found out this is the 18th book in the Reed Security series but this one was fine as a stand-alone. I almost hate to read any others in case I started with the best. Yeah but I definitely am hooked on these characters so I will go back and start from the beginning. Give yourself a treat and pick this up. Just make sure you won’t be offended by any of the male vs female passages...we all know they happen!

EXCERPT:

“Can I just point out that she’s not actually my woman?”

“Yeah, she should be my woman,” Tony grumbled.

“Can we please forget about the fucking thumb war? Face it, you lost. You won the battle, but lost the war. It’s over for you.”

“I wouldn’t be too confident right now if I were you,” Coop said. “I think right now she’d take Tony Tacos over you.”

“There has to be some way to prove to her that it was a one time mistake. Okay, let’s just say that I wanted help getting her back. How would I go about this?”

“Well, you have to prove to her that you are good in bed,” Hunter said. “You are good in bed, right?”

“Well, it’s not like I’m gonna prove it to you,” I grumbled.

“He’d be the one you’d go to,” Cap chuckled. “Hey,” he said, holding up his hands as Hunter advanced on him. “Wax jobs, watching people fuck, thongs, pedicures, and hot tubs. I’m just saying.”

“That wasn’t all me,” he growled.

“Doesn’t matter. Enough of it was,” Cap laughed.

“Can we get back to my issues?”

“You know what you need?” Coop said. “You need a sex tape.”

“Excuse me?”

“Yeah, you know, to prove that you can do it the right way.”

“And who exactly would be filming this? And who would it be with?”

Coop scratched his jaw and shrugged. “Okay, well, unless you have any in storage, that won’t work so well, but there’s gotta be something you can do that will show you’re not a total douche in bed.”

They all stood there staring at the ground in thought. “Really? Maggie went to you with this issue and this is who you brought me?” Cap opened his mouth to speak, but I held up my hand to stop him. “You could have brought me Sinner, the lady killer. You could have brought me the man who made his woman think he was a superhero. Hell, you could have brought me the stalker, but no. You brought me the guy who won the thumb war, but still lost the girl. You brought me the man who has a sixteen-year-old, but no woman. And you brought me the man who fights with his woman for a living.”

I turned and headed for the door, determined to figure this out on my own.

“Hey!” Cap called from behind me. “I showed up.”

“Yeah, the man that’s hanging onto his woman by knocking her up repeatedly. Don’t think that’ll work here.”

I'm a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, "No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book." I didn't think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn't already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven't been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.
