Riley Doesn't Want To Fight Evil by D. R. Mills
Riley Doesn't Want To Fight Evil
by D. R. Mills
October 13, 2025
Genre: thriller, supernatural, dark humor
Riley Thomas is the main character of this story – whether he likes it or not.
Riley Thomas has always been a normal, regular, average guy. He has a crappy job, a few friends, and a boring homelife–and that’s just fine with him.
Unfortunately for Riley, fate has other plans.
Death gods, immortal psychopaths, haunted dolls, and serial-killer neighbors are only a handful of his problems. So far, he’s managed to sidestep his responsibility as the main character, but all that changes when he finds himself wrapped up in a prophecy that holds the fate of the world in the balance.
An ancient force of Hell is rising up. Reckoning is coming.
The path of a hero is a hard one, but with enough tenacity and quick thinking, Riley might be able to stay completely out of it. Or at least, he’s going to try.
D. R. Mills is a young-adult horror author who is currently hard at work on his debut series, MONSTERS. He was born and raised in Wyoming, where he’s still lurking around somewhere. When he isn’t writing, he’s playing video games a borderline unhealthy amount or spending time with his beautiful wife.

POST-APOCALYPTIC HORROR MEETS THRILLER IN A DYSTOPIAN NIGHTMARE OF FIRE AND ASH.
The world didn't end with a bang or a whimper...it ended with people bursting into flames.
Across the globe, spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is turning ordinary citizens into living infernos. Governments collapse, cities fall silent, and the air itself tastes like ash. Society burns while the lucky few are left to wonder: When will it be me?
Sam and Aja were already falling apart before the fires came. Now, trapped in a crumbling apartment and suffocating under the weight of isolation, their love feels just as doomed as the rest of humanity. But when whispers spread of a small Canadian town called Consumption, untouched by the inferno, hope flickers.
Stealing an RV and refusing to leave Aja behind, Sam sets out on a desperate, ash-streaked journey through a burned-out North America. With his best friend in tow and a growing crew of strange, unforgettable survivors, they chase rumors through a landscape warped by horror, madness, and the heat of human combustion.
Perfect for fans of The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway and Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion, Combustible is a harrowing, darkly tender exploration of what survives when everything else burns. Will love endure in a world destined to ignite?
There were shouts within and then banging, followed by the distinctive sound of splintering wood. I watched a man rush into the room and douse the flames with a handheld fire extinguisher. I got to walking before the smoke settled. I had a pretty good idea of what I’d see and my day was already shit enough.
I hurried around the corner and almost whooped out a hallelujah when I saw the gate to Singa’s was up.
My enthusiasm was tempered when I looked through the window. The place had been ransacked.
Singa, at least that’s what I assumed his name was since he was always there, sat behind the counter reading an old newspaper.
“What happened in here?” I said.
The shelves had all been knocked down, glass to the cold cases reduced to pebbles, boxes, bottles and cans strewn about as if the entire store had been invaded by a mosh pit.
Singa, who had been old to begin with, looked like he’d aged twenty years. The bags under his eyes were dark and had an almost crispy texture. Those umber eyes held back tears that threatened to fall any second. He looked around the remains of his store in a daze.
“Humanity happened,” he said, his voice, like his gaze, far, far away.
I put a fifty-dollar bill on the counter. “You mind if I see if there’s anything worth saving?
“Keep your money.” He either avoided my gaze or thought he was talking to a ghost. “Money burns. We all burn.”
I snatched a reusable bag from the floor and got on my hands and knees, looking for anything that had been left whole. I came up with a box of elbow macaroni, a can each of beets, sliced potatoes and artichoke hearts, three bottles of off-brand water, and a box of stuffing mix. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing.
I slung the bag over my shoulder. “Is…is there anything I can do for you?”
His eyes slowly found mine. “Yes.” He opened his palm. In the center, I saw a tiny pile of black specks. “Run.”
Singa dipped his head and inhaled the powder like a cokehead fresh from rehab.
The sneeze came instantly.
The flames seemed to burst from every pore of his body.
I jumped back and slipped on a pile of debris, sure that the heat had singed my eyebrows.
Poor Singa slumped into his chair and burned without a sound.
It took a few attempts to get to my feet and run out of the store. In my mad dash back home, my heavy breathing popped the tampons loose. I didn’t stop to look for them.
I noticed fires in other windows.
The one that had been put out earlier was back, blazing again. SHC was like that sometimes. Someone on the radio had called it ‘almost sentient.’ It didn’t like it when people put it out. So, it came back with a vengeance. This time, no one tried to extinguish it.
In fact, there were tendrils of smoke everywhere as far as I could see. And nowhere could you hear the sound of a single fire engine. What was the point?
Oddly, what disturbed me most was when one of the feral cats hiding under a car gave a loud sneeze. It burst into flame immediately. The fleeing blur of burning hair and flesh went headfirst into a wall, made a sharp turn and disappeared down an alley, leaving grayish smoke in its wake.

Guest Post with Author Samantha Sanchez (Prodigal) + excerpt
At the end of the hour Anthony confessed to cameras that he was worried that Lyric was going to fall in love with him and that he regrets having given into her sexual advances. And that while "she's cool and all" he didn't want to be in a relationship with her. Lyric herself seemed to agree that a relationship with Anthony wasn't desirable. In fact, earlier in the episode it was clear her heart and mind were already spoken for by another.
After last night's episode aired, Lyric took to Facebook to vent her frustration and to warn viewers not to be fooled by her baby daddy's assurances. Says that “he doesn’t give a damn about” the child she’s carrying and calls him “bitchmade” and a “fake thug.” After his manhood was attacked, Anthony responded by saying that the only reason he had sex with her was because he “felt bad” for her and warned her not to bring another man around his child. The argument then goes to the question of when his responsibility for the baby begins.
The preview of the season moving forward shows that the drama between the two is just getting started.
A few hours later, I was annoyed, but the rest of the evening went by smoothly, nobody got cussed out. Christopher and Athena got some homework done, DeVon had obviously abandoned the suicide trip he was on earlier and was clowning around with Monroe, wondering aloud what kind of child my baby would be. Monroe agreed with Trey that he hoped the baby looked like me and not Anthony. I got a little offended when they said that the child would act as stupid as him. They said that Anthony always boasted he was the “freshest nigga alive” so my baby, if it was a boy, would boast that he was the “freshest lil nigga alive.”
I eventually separated myself from them. I was curled up in the alcove upstairs reading The Ramayana for my Mythology class. I was engrossed in this story of a Prince named Rama going through Hell and high water to rescue his wife Sita who had been tricked and kidnapped by the monster Ravana.
“Ay, we need to talk.”
Anthony asked coming up the stairs. That’s how he addressed me. He never said my name I was always “Ay”.
“I have nothing to say to you.” I said picking up my cup of orange juice and taking a sip .
“You’re still drinking?” he asked.
“It’s just orange juice.” I said turning back to my book. “Goodbye. I’m studying.”
“We need to talk about this.” He insisted sitting on the end of the bench by my feet.
“There’s nothing to talk about.” I argued “I’m pregnant. That’s that. Bye now.” I said gently kicking him to get off the bench and out of my space.
“Come on, please. We need to talk about this.” I’d never seen him so serious in the entire month I’d lived here and he’d never said please.
“Talk about what?” I asked annoyed.
“Ok, look you’re cool peeps, I like you and all…” he replied, “and I can be there for you but I can’t be with you. You know?”
I gave up trying to read, I laid the book down and scooted upright. I had to hear this pile of delusional bull that was coming out of his mouth. “What are you talking about?” I asked.
“I’m not trying to be in a relationship. Just because you’re pregnant with my seed I don’t want you to think that we finna be together.” “Don’t nobody here want to be in a relationship with you. Alright then, well good, cuz DeVon said that you might expect that.”
“DeVon lied to you. I like you and all but I don’t want you. If you want to be there for the baby then cool but I’m not going to force you.”
I didn’t have the energy or inclination to make a man handle his responsibilities. I’ll let the courts do it for me when I file for child support. “That guy you brought in here today was that your ex boyfriend?”
“Oh DeVon said that he was your ex boyfriend.”
“We never dated.”
“Did you have sex with him?”
“None of your business.”
“It kinda is my business, you said you having my baby and now this nigga sayin he’s daddy.”
“No what he said was, the baby would call him daddy instead of you. Not that it was his baby.”
“What did he mean my baby finna call him daddy though? If that’s my seed then why would it call another dude daddy?”
I rolled my eyes “He meant that he doesn’t expect you to step up so he’s going to.”
“That’s my child though.”
“And?”
“And my kid isn’t going to be callin’ another nigga daddy, that’s what’s not going to happen.”
“So you gonna step up then?”
He paused before he answered, “Honestly, I’m not ready for a baby right now.”
“So you don’t want it then?”
“Do you?”
“I’m asking you. What do you want to do?”
“It’s up to you. I’m just sayin’ I’m not ready, my life is too chaotic. I’m not ready for a baby.”
“You think I’m ready for this?”
“I don’t know, but I just got a lot going on in my life right now.”
“And I don’t?”
“Ok look, I’m wanted for murder back in Brooklyn.”
“Murder?” I asked in disbelief, trying not to laugh. This dude ain’t wanted for no murder. I don’t know him that well yet but I know that he’s not bold enough to take a life. If he was that bold, is he really stupid enough to talk about it on camera?
“Yea, well what had happened was….”
That’s how you know he’s lying! I laughed. When a dude starts a story with “What had happened was….” Man shut the hell up. Your soft ass ain’t foolin nobody.
“My cousin did it.” He said “But I was in the car when he did it. So I’m wanted too. That’s why I came out here.” He finished.
I felt the annoyance rising in me. I had no patience for him at all. “I don’t care, that has nothing to do with what is going on with our situation. I need to know if I can count on you for support during this pregnancy or not.”
“I mean...yea I can support you, I just don’t want to be in a relationship right now. We can still be cuddy buddies though you do got some good p---y.”
“Goodbye, Anthony.” I said dismissively.
I picked my book back up hoping he would take the hint and leave. He didn’t.
“Hey are you gonna f--k that Freakboy, dude?” He asked after a minute.
“That’s none of your business.”
“Well, you can’t f--k nobody but me, you know that right?”
“Excuse me?” I asked daring him to repeat his command.
“That’s mine.” He said pointing to the lower half of my body
“No, it’s mine.” I insisted “And I can give it to whomever I damn well choose”
“No you can’t.”
“You just said that you didn’t want to be with me.”
“I don’t.”
“You tryin to tell me who I can and can’t have sex with, is some relationship type s--t.”
“You got my seedling inside you.” He said
“And? That makes you my baby daddy not my man.”
“I know, I’m just sayin...I don’t want the DNA to get mixed up and then you not know who the father is. That’d be horrible.”
I paused and looked at him in astonishment. Did he really just say that? Is he serious? Is he that slow? He gotta know that’s not how it works.
“What?” he asked at my dumbfounded expression. I didn’t even dignify it with a response. I grabbed my orange juice, and my book and I walked away. It was too outrageous. I was speechless.

Book Review: Dead Medium: Not Your Average Ghost Story by Peter John
January 10, 2013
Pages: 380
Dead Medium is a paranormal, dark comedy that turns the concept of clairvoyance and medium-ship on its head.
The deathly silence is about to be broken. She disliked the company of others and death did little to warm her spirit. She had led an independent life and she faced death in much the same way. She was finally alone, finally free from the mindless babble of others, at least that's what she thought. May Elizabeth Trump was the rarest of spirits and she was none too happy about it either. She was a dead medium, a ghost who can speak with the living, and her services were to become in great demand. Flung into the limelight and smothered with unwanted attention, May soon discovers that it is not only ghosts with long awaited messages that have taken an interest in her. Something dark was lurking in the shadows, stalking her. Even the dead are not left to rest in peace. Dead Medium: A humorous, supernatural mystery and a unique vision of life after death. Not your average ghost story.
"The strangest things happen when you're dead." - May Elizabeth Trump.
"This may come as a shock to you, Mr. Tailor, but ghost stories don‘t work on ghosts!" - Gary Reed.
“On the really quiet nights, I thought you knew it was me who made the Ouija board spell cake.” - Margaret.
May Elizabeth Trump enjoyed her solitude and did not put up with nonsense. When she suddenly died, she was left to figure out what was next. May was surprised that she had not moved on to another place and that she was still on earth, though no one seemed to be able to see her or hear her. She decided to go in search of someone who might be able to hear her, when she finds Penny, another recently departed. May decides that Penny needs her help with her daughter, Chloe who is still among the living and will go to great lengths to help her keep her house and continue her education. May is surprised to find that the living can hear her even if they can’t hear other ghosts. She figures her only shot at getting the living to help her on her quest is to visit her friend Margaret, who is part of a group of old ladies who like to try to commune with the dead.
A funny paranormal comedy that puts a new spin on ghosts, mediums and what may be in the afterlife. I sometimes struggle when reading a book from a writer from another country, and this was no different. Words have different meanings that cause me to stumble but it didn’t detract too much from the whole of the story. I did not care for the way that George’s character was betrayed. He was from 100 years ago and his speech reflected so. Due to this fact I didn’t follow everything he was trying to portray and felt that at times I might have missed something significant. A nice mix of young and old showed the growth that people can make even when they aren’t trying.
