EXCERPT:
It was the screams that woke Nancy.

They were bloodcurdling, gut-wrenching howls filled with nothing but pain. It was unlike anything Nancy had ever heard before.

Gasping for breath, Nancy’s eyes flew open. She pitched forward and peered around her with bleary eyes, trying to figure out which of her neighbors must have been shrieking … but instead of her ceiling and her warm blankets, she found herself lying in a heap on the side of a dirt road.

Above her, gray clouds swirled through the frigid night. Snowflakes drifted down and clung to her lashes and her hair.

Why was she outside? The last thing she remembered was diving into bed after Diana left.

Panic filled her as she rolled clumsily onto her arms and knees, finding her legs twisted and tangled in endless yards of fabric. It was only when she managed to drag herself to her feet by gripping a lantern-lit street post that she realized she was no longer in her Wonder Woman pajamas. She was dressed in a long-sleeved frock that swirled around her ankles. She grabbed at the thick fabric, tugging and pulling at it, until she realized that she was wearing some sort of antiquated dress and a petticoat.

“I must be dreaming,” Nancy whimpered, but she was hardly able to hear herself over the screams still echoing around her.

Her chest heaving, Nancy stumbled down the dirt road. She had to find someone, anyone, to tell her where she was and what was going on. This place was unrecognizable to her. There were only ten houses on this small road, as well as a building Nancy assumed was some sort of general store. There was also something almost familiar about the budding town, though Nancy could not put her finger on what it was—especially when she realized that flames licked up toward the sky from most of the buildings. Heat emanated from them, battling with the wintry chill of the air.

Nancy froze. She could only stare as the townspeople ran around wildly and begged for help. Suddenly, men on horses charged through the village, some swinging swords and guns while others aimed flaming arrows at people and homes.

“The outsiders are attacking!” someone screamed before getting cut down before Nancy’s very eyes.

“No … no!” shrieked Nancy. “Wake up, please! I don’t want to be here anymore!”

Book Review: Shadow (The Romany Outcasts Series, Book 2) by Christi J. Whitney

Shadow (The Romany Outcasts Series, Book 2)
by Christi J. Whitney
June 2nd 2016

by HarperVoyagerUK
Pages: 341
The second volume in this incredible YA trilogy. When stone hearts break they shatter.

Sebastian Grey used to be a normal teenager. Now he’s a creature whose sole purpose is to be a guardian for secretive gypsy clans.

When the Romany gypsies need his help, Sebastian is given a second chance to protect Josephine Romany – the girl he loves. But this is no easy task when some of them think he’s as bad as the shadow creatures attacking their camp.

Yet to keep Josephine safe, Sebastian might have to embrace his darker side. Even if that means choosing between his humanity and becoming the monster everyone believes him to be.

As the second book in this YA trilogy continues, all of Sebastian’s friends graduate from high school as he continues to struggle with what he has become. He doesn’t fit in with his friends anymore and even though he is part of the Corsi clan he doesn’t really fit in with them either. They’ve done a great job of helping him and accepting him but still won’t look him in the eyes most of the time. When Nicholas Romany, the head of the Romany clan shows up in town again and asks Sebastian to fulfill his destiny as Josephine’s guardian, his heart is filled with hope for the first time in forever.

Being a teenager is hard enough but finding out you’re a gargoyle and a guardian to boot is even harder. The story is very relatable to teenagers and has a nice mix of romance as well. The sparks between Josephine and Sebastian are fantastic! Even though Sebastian is a gargoyle I found myself secretly cheering for him to win the girl and of course knock out his competition who is a complete jerk.

Book Review: How To Seduce A Gargoyle in 10 Days (A Wicked Tale) by Saranna DeWylde + giveaway

How To Seduce A Gargoyle in 10 Days
by Saranna DeWylde
A Wicked Tale
ARe Books
Genre: M/F, Paranormal , PNR
Got gargoyle?

Ginger Butterbean would like to, but she’s not sure how to go about it. Her marriage of a hundred years has crumbled to dust and she’s worried her witchy bits might be so full of cobwebs, they’ve malfunctioned.

She needs sexy gargoyle Slade Nightwing to remind her of what it means to be a witch and that love isn’t just a fairytale.

This is a very short and steamy read. It's all witchy bits and warlock wands. If you want to get a little taste of this magic world, then give this speedy read a try!

I would have liked to read something a tad bit longer, but for what you get there was a good helping of romance all laced with an adult Harry Potter feeling. While the main couple have a very rushed experience, things get hot and heavy pretty fast. It's maybe more of a sex slave type of book then anything else. Even though she seems to be the one giving more then receiving. But hey, with jacked up men this hot...who the hell cares!

Some funny-snarky parts add to the overall story, if you want to try a quick read that's entertaining then this one may just be for you!

Sheep Book Review: Revelation by Randi Cooley Wilson

Revelation (The Revelation Series Book 1)
By: Randi Cooley Wilson
314 Pages
Mature Young Adult/New Adult Paranormal Romance.

Plot:
A DIVINE SECRET,
A LOYAL PROTECTOR,
A FORBIDDEN LOVE.
Eve Collins starts her freshman year at college blissfully unaware that one revelation will challenge everything she’s believed to be true about her family, life, and future, and right in the midst of it all is Asher St. Michael. Mysterious and aloof, Asher is appointed to protect Eve at all costs. Bound by his oath of loyalty to mankind, loving her is forbidden. Dark and enigmatic, Gage Gallagher may be even more dangerous to Eve than the demonic army that hunts her. Caught in the middle of a centuries old war, Eve must choose sides knowing that the wrong choice will cost more than just her life. Can Asher and Eve fulfill their destinies or will their love destroy everything? Revelation is a journey of self-discovery, love, and sacrifice.

This one is most definitely a young adult book, I didn't feel it even crossed into the new adult realm at all. The romance is sparse and PG rated, younger girls can read this one for sure.

I'm not a hugh fan of soft PNR and it showed while reading this one. There are some elements I really did like, but overall the world was too soft and not nearly dark enough to keep me really wanting to read what happened next.

Some overuse of the same phrasing of words got a tad annoying, the main character Eve is supposed to be heavily guarded by her gargoyle buddies. As someone who holds a lot of power in a good vs evil war, you would think this is a key element to the story. But the author takes adventure and throws the bad guys in her face every time one of the guards turns around.

Things get worse when an archangel comes down to tell Eve she can't hook up with her sexy guard man Asher. He's a bit whiny at times and a little too emo for me, but he sounds like he's got a great body. So...points for that and we can look over all the rest! Yes, that was shallow to say. However, all of this "He can't be with you, he's here to only protect you" was very predictable.

The only real twist happens at the very end, and I can't even tell you about it without spoiling the whole thing! Overall, I recommend this one to folks who like YA or the younger reading crowd

Book Review: Queen of Hearts by Kristen Painter

Queen of Hearts: Sin City Collectors Novella(Sin City Collectors)
by Kristen Painter
ebook
Published July 1st 2014

Welcome to Las Vegas, home of the Sin City Collectors. The job description is easy: Bring the offending supernatural in to the Boss and don’t ask any questions.

Feline shifter Claudette Marchon traded life as a showgirl to become a Sin City Collector, giving up the glamour to earn some serious cash in order to buy her own business. Mission accomplished, she now runs a pawn shop specializing in gems and jewelry.

Life is good until a Collection job requiring her specific skill set lures her back in. The Queen of Hearts, a museum-worthy ruby and diamond necklace has been stolen from the Boss’s private collection and she’s his last hope to do what two other Collectors have already failed to do. Bring in the necklace. And the thief.

But gargoyle Jason Tennant isn’t quite the dangerous criminal Claudette expects. In fact, he’s not a thief at all. He’s former Special Ops and being set up by the real mastermind, forcing her to decide between the man she’s falling for and the man she works for. Proving Jason innocent may risk the Boss’s wrath, but Claudette’s heart says it’s a gamble worth taking.

What’s Collected in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Claudette Marchon, a shifter and former Sin City Collector, is called back into service when a special collection needs to be made. Her target is Jason Tennant, gargoyle and supposedly dangerous criminal. However, Claudette quickly discovers that things aren’t as they seem and that Jason isn’t what they think he is. She needs to make a choice between her job and the man who she thinks she is falling for.

Being a novella it was a short easy read. The attraction between the two characters is instant. How could it not be? Claudette is a gorgeous shifter, who’s smart and sexy. Jason, the criminal at large, is a sweet and gorgeous man with a rock hard body. It’s no wonder they have trouble fighting the attraction. However, it might it be too quick? Maybe, but being a novella we have to remember we are not dealing with a full-length novel. I would have to guess it’s extremely difficult to fit too much detail into just over a hundred pages. So, things happen quickly which makes the pace of the book really fast but kind of leaves you wishing there was a little more to the story.

Does that mean it feels incomplete? No, not at all. The author definitely wraps it up and it feels finished, it just feels a little light if you know what I mean.

Book Review: Alchemystic by Anton Strout

Alchemystic (The Spellmason Chronicles #1)
By: Anton Strout

AN OLD FRIEND OF THE FAMILY…
Alexandra Belarus is a struggling artist living in New York City, even though her family is rich in real estate, including a towering Gothic Gramercy Park building built by her great-great-grandfather. But the truth of her bloodline is revealed when she is attacked on the street and saved by an inhumanly powerful winged figure. A figure who knows the Belarus name…

Lexi’s great-great-grandfather was a Spellmason—an artisan who could work magic on stone. But in his day, dark forces conspired against him and his, so he left a spell of protection on his family. Now that Lexi is in danger, the spell has awoken her ancestor’s most trusted and fearsome creation: a gargoyle named Stanis.

Lexi and Stanis are equally surprised to find themselves bound to each other. But as they learn to work together, they realize that only united can they save the city they both love…

Urban fantasy has more than its fair share of monsters, but I don't recall too many gargoyles appearing in the genre. Well, maybe Anton Strout had a similar mindset and decided to feature one in the first book of his new series, the Spellmason Chronicles.

Lexi is a struggling artist, at least in her mind. She's the daughter of one of New York's wealthiest real estate magnates, so I wonder how much of her life is a genuine struggle. She's attacked on her way home one night, until her attacker suddenly disappears, then shows up dead in the park next door, like the fella had been dropped from a great height--and his head caved in by something with incredible strength.

She doesn't know it yet, but she has a guardian angel. Or rather a guardian gargoyle, a dormant being alive once more named Stanis that's awakened with an innate compulsion to protect Lex and her family. Lexi's brother doesn't fair as well, however, as he's seemingly crushed underneath a collapsed building owned by their family. Some unknown entity is out to destroy the family, and as Lexi investigates she quickly realizes it's all connected to her family's secret past and the mysterious creature watching over her from above.

It took a considerable amount of reading before I started to think of Lexi as anything other than a spoiled brat. She's downright precious compared to the rest of her family, with a domineering father, emotionally detached mother, and near-sociopathic brother, but being the best of a bad bunch isn't exactly an endearing quality. Her progression through the novel helps her improve somewhat, as she discovers her abilities as a Spellmason (someone with the ability to control and manipulate stone), but by the end of the book I still didn't find her all that likable.

As for Stanis, the gargoyle conflicted with concealing his existence from humanity and protecting Lexi, he had an enjoyable fish-out-of-water appeal. There's a surprisingly dark tinge to the character though, considering how light and campy the tone of this novel is. In the backdrop of a new adult adventure story, Stanis is an unsophisticated and violent character, showing no qualms in delivering vicious beatdowns on Lexi's enemies. That's tempered with a growing attraction to her and comedic interactions with her two best friends.

The dialogue is stilted in a few spots, wooden in others, but the action and mystery throughout the novel are handled well, with enough laid out at the end of the novel to properly set up the sequel due out later this year. In TV terms, I had my hopes up for something with a bit of a Buffy vibe, and wound up with a book more akin to Charmed. If you're a fan of that, you're in for a treat. Anything more than that, you might feel let down.

Guest Post: Darkness Avenged by Alexandra Ivy Blog Tour + giveaway

Today PNR author Alexandra Ivy is sharing some of her favorite quotes from Levet (Guardians of Eternity #9.5) to help celebrate the release of Darkness Avenged (Guardians of Eternity #10). After you enter the tour wide contest check out the series spotlight after the page break. This series has some sexy covers you don't want to miss!

Levet’s Top Lines

“Ah.” He gave a ridiculous wiggle of his thick brow. “In that case I do not suppose you are imagining I’m Brad Pitt?”

“I hate to interrupt such a touching scene but those hellhounds are not going to wait for you two to play kissy face. So, unless you intend to nail a chunk of roast beef to my butt and have me run around as a distraction I would suggest we prepare for battle.”

“Food?” The miniature beast sighed in pleasure. “Ah, you are an angel.”
Ariyal snorted. “You just consumed an entire deer.”
“There is always room for cake.”

“Is that any way to speak to a demon who is attempting to save your sausage?” the aggravating demon mocked.
Styx scowled. “What the…”
“Bacon,” Darcy explained.

“Bah.” Levet rubbed his stunted horn. “She is making me nutmeg.”

Levet blinked at the odd words. “But of course you have heard of me. Who has not?” he demanded. “I am a warrior of great renown.”

“Ah, dearest Maman, how is the loathsome old bat?”

“Très bien,” the gargoyle sniffed. “You are the panty boss.”

“It worked.” His wings stirred the dark air with a flutter of excitement. “By my father’s stone balls, it worked.”

Levet (Guardians of Eternity #9.5)
Just released on March 26, 2013
Gargoyles do not admire difference--and Levet is undeniably different. Of miniscule stature, rather beastly looks, and with fragile, delicate wings, even his family has shunned him, banished him from his beloved Paris. That he is the only gargoyle ever to help defeat the Dark Lord and his hordes of minions makes no impression. But now Levet has come home, determined to be restored to the official Gargoyle Guild. To do so, he must confront the most feared gargoyle in all of Europe. The one who tried to kill him as a child: his own mother. . .

With few allies, Levet's survival may depend on the aid of two strangers: Valla, a beautiful but damaged nymph, and Elijah, the fiercely possessive, love-struck vampire clan chief to whom she can't quite surrender--unless Levet has something to do with it. . .

Sheep Book Review: Stone Cold Seduction by Jess Macallan

When a regular night of Robin Hood-ery results in the manifestation of some, um, unusual paranormal abilities, perfume-maker Elleodora Fredricks realizes the normal world she lives in isn't quite... normal. And neither is she, thanks to her father, king of the shadow elves. Not only is he evil incarnate and the reason Elle moonlights as a burglar-someone has to take care of all his victims-he's stolen her memories.
And only reading her fate can fix that.
Good thing she's got a trio of hotties willing to help her find said fate, but only if she gives them something in return. Saving her oracle BFF's fiance, falling in love with the gargoyle, and making up for breaking the phoenix's heart ought to be a piece of cake for the princess of the shadow elves.
If only the king didn't want his daughter dead...

Jess has crated a new and captivating world full of Shadow/Light Elves, Oracles, Phoenixes :swooning: and Gargoyles :swooning yet, again. This is the first book in the Set In Stone trilogy. I am a big fan of trilogies because you get a complex story with closure in sight. The second and third books come out March and April 2012 so there isn’t a long wait and considering the cliff hanger on this one I am glad.

The story is fast paced at breakneck speed, but it is at the expense of creating characters without much depth. In the case of this story I didn’t mind so much because it is so entertaining! The main character, Elle, thinks she is just an ordinary girl until she starts to exhibit some unusual abilities. She finds out her memories have been tampered with and she is actually the daughter of the Shadow Elf King and in a whole lot of trouble. I love Elle’s attitude. She is written with just the right amount of clever snarkiness.

Now let’s talk about smoldering alpha males (you knew I would). Elle is being pursued by two OMG perfect lovers. First there is Jax, a gargoyle shifter. Gargoyles serve the Shadow Elves. Who knew they could be so sexy? When Jax turns to stone he is more like a smooth Greek statue that is just as flexible as his human form, but can crush you without much effort. He can also turn specific *parts of himself to stone at will (hubba, hubba). Elle is his fated mate and he will have you swooning with the way he loves her, but he has some very dark secrets that Elle might not be able to forgive.

Enter, MacLean. He is a Phoenix shifter and they serve the Light Elves. Elle is also his fated mate (I know, lucky damn girl) and she was once engaged and very much in love with him, but her evil father has stolen all her memories of this supernatural world she is part of and sent her to live as a human. Elle has fallen in love with Jax, but her memories of MacLean start to come back. This is setting up a tumultuous love triangle that will leave someone with a broken heart. The author has said Elle will end up picking one over the other by the end of the trilogy and that the one who is dumped will get his own story, hopefully with a HEA! At this point I want her to pick Jax, but I think MacLean will shine in the next book leaving the reader and Elle with a very difficult choice.

This is quick, light, entertaining reading with all the right PNR and Urban Fantasy elements and is well worth your time.
