Religious Science Fiction: IKONA by M.D. Dixon + excerpt

The concept of interconnectedness surfaces in a vision that spans from contemporary cityscapes to a fractured future in IKONA by M.D. Dixon.

This story follows four strangers who are unknowingly linked by an ancient, healing cross, examining how personal sacrifice and collective evolution are often intertwined. It is a contemplative look at how the choices made in the present ripple through the fabric of time.

As the resonance of the cross pulls them together, these four must navigate the shifting realities of their existence. The ultimate question becomes which future they will inhabit and what price they must pay to secure a path toward healing.

IKON
by M.D. Dixon
February 20, 2026
Genre: Religious Science Fiction & Fantasy, Genetic Engineering
A mysterious Russian Orthodox cross, a holy icon with inexplicable healing power, begins to surface across cities, lifetimes, and fractured timelines.

Four strangers find themselves drawn into its field—from the bustle of Sydney, Hong Kong, Atlanta and Berlin to the stark quiet of Siberia’s post-apocalyptic tundra.

In Atlanta, Kate Davies witnesses the icon’s strange effect on a sick child. In Sydney, Finley Minor is haunted by visions of possible futures and the quiet weight of consequence. Jia Li MacPherson, former thief and Shibari performer, holds secrets that powerful forces would kill to keep buried. Wallace Deng Moroz, a monk living a century ahead, clings to visions of a cure in a world where a genetic engineering catastrophe has nearly ended humanity, and the political landscape is dangerously polarised.

The convergence of these four heroes feels destined, yet it is shaped by choice – and the deeper they move into the cross’s resonance, the more the question shifts:

Which version of the future will they choose to inhabit?

And what must be surrendered to reach it?

IKONA is a visionary novel of shifting realities and inner reckonings—a meditation on time, memory, and healing.

FINLEY & THE SEA
MAY 2019
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Finley Minor was by his own accounts an empty man, a listless man, spiritually and emotionally sparse. Blink a thousand times and his course in life would not have shifted an inch. He was motionless like a chameleon in the presence of a threat. But this was not fact, only fear, and that of a man who knew that he’d not lived at full throttle and had succumbed to the fate of it —a slow and shallow life. He ruminated on it. He judged himself for it. He laughed at his own expense, without thinking he might ever change a thing.

In the way one always has a beginning, a great excuse, this was Finley’s: at the age of seven, in his native England, he sat on the beach as his stick wove tessellations in the sand (almost of its own accord, it seemed in retrospect), and he looked to the horizon towards France with the open, impressionable curiosity of his young age. He wondered at the sea’s depth, its great distance, how one might (as many had) swim across the channel, what creatures might lurk there, what they might feel like against bare skin. He imagined something slimy and cold, fanged, and slithering. The waves seemed to roar at him, even though they descended in the rockpools with the gentleness of pooling cream.

He stood, determined to satisfy his curiosity. He took halting steps over the rocks and shells, straight ahead, then bearing left around a rock face that jutted into the sea. He sat on a big, flat rock and stared into the gray water. He heard his father calling out his name, but ignored him. The water rushed in again and again, and each time reached further and further, first sucking at his toes, then his heels, then his knees. His curiosity fled; he became afraid, and all sound was magnified, the dull ocean roar, the seagull squawking a few feet away, his heartbeat. He knew he had to go back to shore. He waved to his father, stood, and took a faltering step. There was a low murmur; the water fizzled once more in retreat from the rocky sand like the gasping breath of a dying man. He felt dizzy and fell to his knees. He crouched on all fours and steadied himself as the water swirled and grasped at him, and the sky looped and the clouds fell from the corner of his eyes. He felt his head winched back towards the horizon, and the sea reached for his throat. Blackness.

When he came to, dragged back to shore by his father, he announced that his aunt would never return from her Côte D’Azur holiday. He wagged his finger towards the surf and pulled a face, “Over there, there is smooching.”

The official prognosis was that he’d had an epileptic fit, though none of the tests proved it. He must have passed out, in that case, the doctor pronounced, low blood sugar, a low-level virus, dehydration.

But Finley knew, only he knew.

The ocean had rent a hole in his soul, and let in the future.

Publisher: Android Press
On the surface, the city of HelsInc appears to have recovered from the war waged between humans and Ethereals, but beneath the scars, the city seethes. The remains of magic festers, causing mutations in human DNA which could give humans Ethereal power-not that the HelsInc government would ever let that happen. The Legion resists, ripping out their neurochips and protesting the mandatory gene therapy for humans with cryptomine in their DNA.

At only 19 years old, Omyn Talvinen isn't ready to play parent to her kid brother, but with her mom in prison on trumped up charges and her deadbeat dad AWOL, she's left with little choice. Forced to risk her freedom to pay the rent, Omyn finds herself at the mercy of a pair of cyborg soldiers when they catch her red-handed stealing nanites from a cyberware Salon. But the synths' powers don't work on Omyn, and they discover they all share a common memory that they must get to the root of.

Wanted dead by the government, Omyn and the renegade soldiers turn to a rebel Legion group with dreams of resuscitating dead magic for help. With the clock-ticking for the synths, Zee-Five and Omyn are forced to confront the secrets of their past and a dark conspiracy that'll shake the blood-soaked foundations of the city.
"Van Rooyen spices up a familiar cyberpunk world with appealing, voicey narration and an added layer of mutagenic magic."

From SILVER HELIX by Xan van Rooyen
Pg. 37
-------------------------------------------------------

The quickrail hurtled along the streets, past massive, cloud-scraping malls, their flanks advertising everything from exotic cuisine to the latest chip protocols promising near immortality.

People ebbed and flowed through the quickrail doors, a swell of sweat and perfume, fried street food, and the cloying, pervasive stink of the sea. The train’s ventilation system did its best to maintain a decent atmosphere in the confined cars, but the burned treacle scent of decaying magic had long ago infused the upholstery.

The crowds gradually diminished as our route took us farther north. Two songs later and the landscape morphed into pristine bands of orange, red, and gold. It was so beautiful it made me want to puke.

After the war against Ethereals, HelsInc had replanted the forests in designer patterns of birch and oak, maple, and spruce. All the delineated patterns were crafted by machines. A wild forest might have stirred residual magic from the soil, and HelsInc wasn’t going to take that chance. The apartments and homes here were all new too, all shiny replacements for those razed decades earlier.

Eventually, the landscape faded to gray as if we were reaching the limits of an in-game map, only no message flashed the warning ‘Death Imminent.’

Out of the no man’s land rose a giant zit: VankilaNorth, a lopsided pentagon metastasizing in concrete and steel, ribboned in layers of razor wire and electric fencing. The architect who designed it must have had a fetish for Brutalism. A few layers of spray paint might’ve improved it, but I doubted the people in charge would appreciate décor advice from someone like me. Guess I should be grateful for all the gross architecture begging for a face-lift. It’s not like I’d tag an Aalto or Engel creation.

I pocketed my ear pods before we hurried from the quickrail, following behind the mournful band of fellow convict families all headed for visiting hours. The protesters gathered at the prison gates were a bedraggled, motley bunch held back by barricades and bots. Several placards bore the “PEOPLE≫PROFITS!” slogan, while others read:

“BORN HUMAN, ALWAYS HUMAN.”

“HUMANITY IS MORE THAN DNA.”

Others bore the face of our former health minister with JUSTICE FOR TERHI scrawled below it.

And then there was my personal favorite: IF THE FUTURE IS HUMAN, HOW COME A DROID IS PRESIDENT?

I scanned the crowd for friends but didn’t recognize anyone. Their faces were wrapped in scarves and balaclavas. If any of the protesters had scars instead of chips, they were wise enough to keep them hidden.

Bracken tugged my hand. We’d fallen behind the others already being ushered through the first round of security checks.

“Do I look okay?” I whispered to Brack before it was our turn. I’d tried to soften my usual aesthetic by leaving the points of my hair hanging loose and my eyes devoid of shadow and liner.

“A little less like you want to punch someone than usual,” he said.

“That’ll do.” I even attempted a smile as they scanned and x-rayed every bit of us before waving us through. I tried not to panic as the visitors’ gate swung shut.

Cyberpunk Science Fiction: Lo by author Bradford Tatum

Welcome to the tour for genre-blurring novel, LO by Bradford Tatum. Read on for more details!

LO

by Bradford Tatum
June 7, 2022
Genre: Sci-Fi/ Noir Thriller
Publisher: Soft Moon Press
Willoughby, known back on Earth as “the East Hamptons of the Kuiper Belt,” is the first sustainable colony on Mars.

Built by the mysterious geneticist Carlo Yakamura this settlement encourages the rich to live as they please. They can enjoy decadent homes, physically modifiable partners, meals based on their best memories and even boutique children known on Willoughby as Builds.

Designed to impress even at the dullest cocktail parties, the Builds’ proprietary motive genes have been sourced from the DNA of some of the greatest artistic disruptors of the last several centuries. But even among a host of uniquely gifted Builds, Lo is unique. And uniquely unbalanced. So what would be the grisliest of murders back on Earth, is just an inconvenience on Willoughby. That is why Lo is sent to be “seasoned” by a man we come to know only as Cook.

Can Cook’s fatherly hand guide Lo to a deeper understanding of his potential and purpose or is Lo’s innate power destined to destroy all of Willoughby? Is Lo the key to Cook’s creative redemption or is he the cause of Cook’s worst nightmares? And once Cook learns the true purpose of Yakamura’s Willoughby will Lo or Cook find the colony worth saving at all?

LO is a sci-fi noir thriller, painted in more deeper shades of blue than black. It is also a story of fathers and sons, lost to one another through terrible compromises and found again through the limits of love. It is a parable of our possible future, a future that is doomed if we rely only on the digital representation of our present while forgetting the lessons and lore of our analogue past.

Dystopian Author Genevieve Morrissey: Are Your Characters Based on Real People…? + giveaway

Are Your Characters Based on Real People…?

All of my characters are people I know, because I don’t have enough imagination to create a totally unique personality. Some are individuals; some are composites. Some of the people I “borrowed” recognized themselves; others didn’t. One not only didn’t recognize herself, but took a surprisingly passionate dislike to her own character. (I think I must have done something wrong there.) I’ve lived a long time and in many different places, which I think has been an advantage. My memory is stocked with a wide variety of Humans I Have Known, ready to be inserted into any plot, and I probably don’t have to work as hard on characterizations as many other writers do.

Antlands (The Antlands Series Book 1)
by Genevieve Morrissey
July 1, 2020
Genre: Science Fiction
It seemed like a good idea… Genetically engineer a species of humanoid workers—strong, tireless, minimally intelligent—to become laborers for humans. What could possibly go wrong?

For a thousand years, humans have had to fight for their survival against the mute, feral “Ants,” created as workers but now gone rogue, scavenging and slaughtering everything in their path.

The beleaguered humans, in the meantime, have evolved two distinct cultures. The disciplined, insular Foresters prioritize safety over personal freedom in their woodland strongholds, while the more individualistic Men embrace an urban lifestyle and are eager to reimplement the technology of past ages. Nominally allies against the Ants, the two groups deeply mistrust each other.

Deer, a despondent Forester soldier, is one of his people’s foremost authorities on Ants. He knows with perfect certainty that Ant-raiders never leave survivors. So how, amid the carnage of a raided Man-village, is one small girl still alive? She says her name is Anne; but who is she, and what is her secret?

Deer takes Anne to the forest to grow up, where years later, a horrifying revelation about her may provide a means for Men and Forester to finally defeat the Ants—but only if they can put aside their differences and work together.

Full of unforgettable characters, masterful dialog, and riveting scenes, Antland
s is ultimately a story of hope, healing, and redemption.

Annasland (The Antlands Series Book 2)
Gone…

Fleeing the last Ant-War, Anna of Evergreen goes with a party of Foresters, Men, and Ants to seek sanctuary on an island. None of them are ever seen again.

Twenty years later, the launch of the Muriel, the first steel-hulled, powered ship built since ancient times, offers Anna’s friends a chance to discover what happened to the lost colonists—if they can persuade River, the Muriel’s designer, to lead an expedition to find her. Exiled from the forest, estranged from his family, and crippled by rage and guilt, River agrees to the plan. Not only was Anna his first love, but the journey, he believes, will provide an exciting new distraction from his pain.

It’s the adventure of River’s life, but when the voyage proves longer and more perilous than anyone anticipated, he finds he’s brought all his old problems along with him on the journey—and in the middle of the ocean, there is no further place for him to run. The struggle to survive reveals River’s limitations, but also his strengths, and with this new self-knowledge, River reassesses his life. The Muriel may provide a whole new life-purpose for him—but is he up to the challenge?

The second book in the Antlands series, Annasland is an adventure novel that explores themes of prejudice and hate, love, loss and redemption in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Book Review: We Have Always Been Here by Lena Nguyen

We Have Always Been Here
by Lena Nguyen
July 6, 2021
368 pages
Publisher: DAW
Genre: crime, mystery, science fiction, genetic engineering
This psychological sci-fi thriller from a debut author follows one doctor who must discover the source of her crew's madness... or risk succumbing to it herself.

Misanthropic psychologist Dr. Grace Park is placed on the Deucalion, a survey ship headed to an icy planet in an unexplored galaxy. Her purpose is to observe the thirteen human crew members aboard the ship—all specialists in their own fields—as they assess the colonization potential of the planet, Eos. But frictions develop as Park befriends the androids of the ship, preferring their company over the baffling complexity of humans, while the rest of the crew treats them with suspicion and even outright hostility.

Shortly after landing, the crew finds themselves trapped on the ship by a radiation storm, with no means of communication or escape until it passes—and that’s when things begin to fall apart. Park’s patients are falling prey to waking nightmares of helpless, tongueless insanity. The androids are behaving strangely. There are no windows aboard the ship. Paranoia is closing in, and soon Park is forced to confront the fact that nothing—neither her crew, nor their mission, nor the mysterious Eos itself—is as it seems.

A psychological thriller in a sci-fi Alien-like setting. This book had several things going for it and some that weren't. Here are my thoughts on both:

What I liked
The dreary, dark atmosphere of the ship and the unknown planet it had landed on were both described very well. As the story progressed and several characters fell prey to a nightmare-inducing sickness that had them behaving irrationally, it only added to the suspense.

The treatment of androids and the fear of an uprising revealed an ugly aspect of humanity. Neither do we like something that's too unlike us, nor do we forgive things for being too similar to ourselves! While this trope is nothing new, it made for interesting reading.

What I Didn't like
Three timelines run simultaneously throughout the telling of this story. While they do lead to good reveals, two of them also detracted from the one that was describing the present.

I struggled to care about the protagonist. She's not described as an introvert but as a misanthrope. How such a person could go on to become a psychologist is beyond me. Not only should she be unable to get a degree in the subject, but her personality would also be a hindrance when she starts practicing. As it was, the whole concept of this book was based on this quirk of hers. So, I dunno how to take that.

Captain Sagara, with his secretive bossy ways, and Fullbreech, made for far more likable characters than the lead. However, the author's insistent way of describing Fullbreech's boy-next-door charm and how weird Sagara was did clue me in about their secret motivations.

Some repetitive parts could have been cut out during editing. Park's explanation of what was happening to Sagara comes to mind as an example.

If you like thrillers heavy on psychology with a smattering of sci-fi, then this is the book for you.

3 sheep.

Reviewer: Mindu Reads
Most of my go-to series are 3 starrers
*No rating - wasn't my genre/dnf'd so rating it would be unfair
1 sheep - won't be picking up another book in a series  again
2 sheep - average read with overused tropes and cliches. Will give the author another try/only continuing because of OCD, so must finish a series
2.5 sheep - liked the book but was put off because it was overly long/illtreatment of a character the author had me invest in and so on.
3 sheep - enjoyed the book but have reservations because I expected to be wowed and wasn't
4 sheep - was unputdownable
5 sheep - formed an emotional connection, will read the heck outta this series

Character Interview: Elaina from The Segonian (Book 2 Aldebaran Alliance) by Dianne Duvall + giveaway

Hello! Thank you for joining me. I’m very happy to be here, celebrating the release of THE SEGONIAN, the second stand-alone novel in my exciting new Aldebarian Alliance series. If you like sci-fi and paranormal romance novels that are full of action, passion, humor, and happily-ever-afters—not to mention strong heroes who adore strong women—then I think you’ll enjoy this one.

To help you get a feel for some of the characters you’ll encounter in the story, I thought I would borrow Sheldon (a human character from my Immortal Guardians series) and have him interview Eliana, the heroine of THE SEGONIAN:

Sheldon: Hi, Eliana. Thanks so much for doing this interview. Talk about long distance.
Eliana: *laughs* Long distance is right.

Sheldon: The last I heard, you were currently located in a distant solar system. Is that right?
Eliana: Actually we’re between solar systems right now. But yeah, I’m a loooooong way from Earth.

Sheldon: This communication system the Lasarans supplied Seth with is so cool. There’s not even a delay.
Eliana: I know. I love it but have no idea how it works. I think the Sectas designed it. Their technology is amazing.

Sheldon: And they’re another alien race.
Eliana: Yes.

Sheldon: Have you met any of them yet?
Eliana: No. Not yet.

Sheldon: But you’ve met others?
Eliana: Yes. I’ve met Lasarans, Yona, Segonians, and Purvelis.
Sheldon: I am so jealous.
Eliana: *grins* This has been the most remarkable adventure of my life.

Sheldon: Remarkable, but harrowing?
Eliana: *grimaces* Very harrowing at times. But it’s been totally worth it.

Sheldon: I heard Seth say you’re on board a ship called the RANASURA.
Eliana: Yes.

Sheldon: Is that like the alien equivalent of a cruise liner?
Eliana: *laughs* Not even close. It’s a Segonian battleship or warship.
Sheldon: That is so cool.
Eliana: *smiles* I say that a least once a day.

Sheldon: I’ll bet. So the Segonians are allies of the Lasarans?
Eliana: Yes. Like the Lasarans, the Segonians are members of the Aldebarian Alliance.

Sheldon: What are they like?
Eliana: The Segonians? *looks thoughtful* They remind me a lot of my fellow Immortal Guardians. They’re fierce warriors when it comes to battle, but the rest of the time they like to laugh and joke and tease. I love these guys. They’re a lot of fun.

Sheldon: What about the women?
Eliana: I don’t know. I’ve never met one. The crew of the RANASURA is all male.
Sheldon: *stares* Seriously? You’re the only woman on the ship?
Eliana: Yep.

Sheldon: *narrows his eyes* Those guys aren’t getting frisky with you, are they?
Eliana: *grins* Only one. *waggles her eyebrows* And he can get frisky with me all he wants.

Sheldon: *laughs* Yeah. I heard a rumor that you’ve fallen in love.
Eliana: I certainly have. Head over heels.

Sheldon: With an alien.
Eliana: With an alien. *gives him a wry smile* Life can be strange as hell sometimes.

Sheldon: Very strange. *glances around, then leans in and whispers* What’s sex with an alien like?
Sheldon: *intrigued* Really?
Eliana: *grins* No. I can totally describe it. It’s freaking awesome. But I don’t kiss and tell, so you aren’t getting any details.

Sheldon: *chuckles* Fair enough. So what does this alien lover of yours look like?
Eliana: Would you like to see him?
Sheldon: Hell, yes.
[A large form appears behind her.]
Sheldon: Holy sh**!
Eliana: *laughs* I know, right?
Sheldon: That is so cool!
Eliana: *glances up as Dagon moves to stand beside her and rests a hand on her shoulder* You see? I’m not the only one who says that.
Dagon: *chuckles* Apparently not.

[The door to David’s study opens and Seth—the imposing leader of the Immortal Guardians—enters.]

Seth: *stops short and scowls* Sheldon! Did I or did I not tell you that tech is ONLY to be used for essential communication with members of the Aldebarian Alliance?
Sheldon: *sends Eliana a guilty glance* Ummmm…

Seth: Have you communicated with anyone else?
Sheldon: Nnnoooo—
Seth: *narrows his eyes*
Sheldon: —oooobody important. *clears his throat* Just some alien rebel dude.

Eliana: *raises her eyebrows* Do you mean Janwar, the Akseli rebel?
Sheldon: I think so. Does he look sort of like a taller version of Jack Sparrow?
Eliana: Yes! That’s exactly what I thought the first time I saw him! He’s even considered something of a pirate.

Sheldon: Then yeah, I might have chatted with him. *glances at Seth from the corner of his eye* A couple of times. *shifts guiltily* Or maybe more. Now that he’s met Lisa, he’s very curious about Earth women.
Seth: *points to the door* Out. Now.
Sheldon: *leaps up and races for the door* Nice talking to you, Eliana!

I hope you’ll enjoy THE SEGONIAN!

We are out-of-this-world excited to be celebrating this release from Dianne Duvall with our readers today by participating in the blog tour! THE SEGONIAN is the second book in Dianne's sci-fi romance series, Aldebarian Alliance. Keep reading to find out more about the title below.

The Segonian (Book #2 Aldebaran Alliance)
By Dianne Duvall
January 19, 2021
Eliana’s life has never been what one might term ordinary. At least, it hasn’t been for a very long time. As a powerful Immortal Guardian, she spends her nights hunting and slaying psychotic vampires that most of humanity doesn’t even realize exist. Then an opportunity arises that instantly makes her extraordinary existence seem downright boring. The leader of the Immortal Guardians asks her to guard a group of mortals who are embarking upon a voyage across the galaxy to the planet Lasaran. How could she possibly say no?

In no time at all, Eliana is hurtling through space on board a Lasaran battleship and getting to know not one but two alien races. It’s the most exciting adventure of her long life… until the ship is unexpectedly attacked. Amid the chaos and destruction that follow, she valiantly helps everyone she can before an explosion renders her unconscious. When Eliana awakens, she finds herself alone, floating in space, clad only in a spacesuit, with no ship in sight. Alone—that is—except for the warm, deep voice that carries over the comm in her helmet.

Commander Dagon and the crew of the Segonian battleship Ranasura respond to a distress call from their Lasaran allies and join a massive Alliance-wide search-and-rescue mission. He quickly achieves communication with a lone Earthling female and races toward her. Every time they speak, his fascination with her grows and he becomes more desperate to reach her before her oxygen supply runs out. Her strength, bravery, and humor entice him, even more so when she defies all odds and they meet in person.

The Lasaran (Aldebarian Alliance Book 1)
by Dianne Duvall
April 21, 2020
Genre: Science fiction, alien invasion, genetic engineering
460 pages

New York Times bestselling author Dianne Duvall brings readers the first novel in a thrilling new sci-fi series full of action, intrigue, humor, and romance.

Taelon searches the galaxy for his younger sister, who mysteriously disappeared while on a diplomatic mission. When an ally reveals that she was seized and is being held prisoner on Earth, Taelon descends upon the blue planet, intent on freeing her and exacting vengeance. However, all does not go as planned. Before he can find her, Taelon is captured and becomes the subject of torturous experiments. For what feels like an eternity, all he knows is pain and fury… until a mind tentatively touches his own and a woman’s voice forever changes his world.

After suffering tragic losses, Lisa is finally beginning to carve out a future for herself when chance sends her to the Anomalous Cognition Research Institute. What at first appears to be a benign organization seeking participants for a psychic study instead turns out to be a government facility harboring a much darker intent. Lisa discovers this too late and soon becomes the unwilling subject of a terrifying experiment. Just as fear and desperation threaten to consume her, a deep, compelling voice penetrates the looming insanity and lends her hope.

Having seen only the worst of humanity, Taelon is shocked when Lisa risks everything to free him. Together the two make their escape, and Taelon finds himself fascinated by the small human woman who—despite all she’s suffered—can still laugh and tease and lure smiles from him. Friendship swiftly grows between them as they work together to evade soldiers intent on capturing them and find themselves hunted by mystifying preternatural beings. Through it all, Lisa steadfastly remains by his side, stealing more of his heart each day while she helps him unravel the mystery of his sister’s fate. Can they find his sister before the hunters find them? If they survive their quest, will Taelon have to bid Lisa farewell… or can he coax her into leaving her planet and joining him for the adventure of a lifetime?

The Lasaran takes place in space where Taelon is searching for his missing sister who was taken while on a diplomatic mission. When Taelon finds out that she’s being held prisoner on Earth he is quick to descend on the planet, except that when he arrives, he’s captured and experimented on. Meanwhile Lisa stumbles across the truth of a psychic study and ends up one of the subjects. She risks everything to free Taelon and together they escape and work together to avoid being captured or worse all while continuing to search for Taelon’s sister.

Dianne Duvall is kicking off a promising new series with The Lasaran and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to read it, nor more excited for the next book in the series. Taelon and Lisa are easy to like and I was in their corner from the start. At first they seem so different, I mean they’re literally worlds apart and yet they worked well as partners, friends, and lovers. There were plenty of moments in The Lasaran that tested the growing relationship between them and I loved that they were able to meet those challenges head on and grow from each experience.

My overall experience with this book was one of suspense, mystery, and delight. Duvall did such a great job at creating and inviting readers into this new world where it seems like anything goes and only the strong survive. I loved the action, adventure and pacing that made for a smooth reading experience. I could go on and on but I’m afraid to spoil things for those who have yet to read the book. The one thing I will say is that there is a small connection to Duvall’s Immortal Guardians and since I haven’t read them all yet I felt I was missing some information. But it wasn’t enough to deter me from enjoying myself. So I would definitely recommend The Lasaran to readers who are looking for some out-of-this-world romantic adventure.

Excerpt: Adamantine by Rosie Weir

Adamantine
by Rosie Weir
June 1, 2020
Genre: Genetic Engineering, Science Fiction, Sci-Fi Romance
love_sacrifice_sentience
Worried for his daughter’s future after a catastrophic disease ravaged humanity, brilliant scientist, James Walker, found a way to measure human consciousness and crafts the ultimate weapon to watch over his little girl: A sentient AI charged with the task of protecting her when he is no longer able to do so.

His creation, Will, is bestowed with an expansive intellect, superhuman strength, and a fierce protective streak.

Tucked away in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains in a rustic log cabin, they live modestly off their sparse resources, hunting game, recording Turing tests on an old camcorder, and bonding over 80s movies.

At eighteen, Molly knows little of the world beyond a collection of grainy VHS classics. Life with Will and James is idyllic. However, as years go by, Molly finds something more profound than ‘sibling love’ growing for Will, whose feelings also start to change from duty and service to something else.

But Will’s mission to protect involves keeping dangerous secrets, including some that could destroy the trust between them forever. Will struggles with the rigid self-discipline of his programming versus turbulent, irrational feelings that grow stronger each day.

True love can’t exist without honesty and risk; the two things Will has been programmed to control at all costs. But trouble is brewing outside their sheltered utopia, and ignorance might be a luxury neither of them can afford any longer.

Excerpt:
Fatigue lines circled James Walkers eyes and forehead; dry canals of wrinkled flesh ran down the sides of his face. A flood of light washed over him, flickering ever so often. He found himself hissing at that inconvenience before resuming his examination. James spent months inspecting every piece of hardware and taking voice notes—he was ready to proceed.

“James Walker, Ph.D.,” he said into the recorder. “After meticulous examination that produced minor wins and fails, everything seems to be in order. The mechanism is responsive. I’m proceeding to the next step—implementation. Cooling systems have taken to the previous modifications, refer to doc-234. Internal examinations will continue intermittently.”

James clicked off the recorder and sighed. He walked across the room and paused inches from his destination, letting his eyes scan the table and its contents. The thin, silicone-based polymer suit reflected the soft light in the room. The project was close to completion and when he thought of what was at stake, the usual litany of questions and doubts arose. He scratched his stubble and pushed aside thoughts of consequence. He knew all too well that one wrong move might bring down his research like a flimsy deck of cards.

“Positivity doesn’t exist in the realm of fringe science, but you have to try,” he muttered under his breath. Those words fueled James, who focused on the most favorable outcome.

The augmented bio-hybrid suit had muscles, tendons, and ligaments designed to replicate the human body—an exact replica. He rolled the table close to the gurney then proceeded to couple the parts together. It took thirty minutes of concentrated effort to get the body sheathed. James took a step back and admired his masterpiece. It reminded him of a Renaissance anatomical painting he once saw in a museum. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips, but he wiped it away with the back of his hand. He attached a transfusion tube to the small glass cylinder filled with dense liquid. He injected the mixture into the body’s cervical vertebrae. Spider-like microscopic nanocells hurried down the spine and spread into the hybrid suit. The muscle tissues expanded and solidified over the impenetrable frame underneath.

James watched the process unfold. His heart beat in double time, eager to move to the next phase. The pulsating vibe in his ears synced with his anxiety. He ambled to a wall lined with metal cabinets and retrieved the synthetic skin from its compartment. At the table, he arranged them over the entire body like a giant jigsaw puzzle. He watched the panels of skin adhere to one another. His hands imprisoned within his pockets to resist the urge to touch. Soon, skin covered the mechanical suit and a man lay in its place. The transformation was a success.

Exhausted, James glanced at his watch and wondered if he should call it a night or continue to the next phase. Logic advised against that course of action, but the restless inventor needed to proceed. A tremor ran through his hand, a reminder of the imminent situation he was in. Time was no longer a commodity he could afford.

He shook off the reverie and began the final phase. He flipped a switch and waited.

James didn’t expect movement, so when the eyes fluttered, he was startled. Rapid eye movement meant the system transmitted the packets of data through a private server James created, which allowed limited access to a vast global network.

“William? Can you hear me?” James whispered. He moved closer to the table and repeated the question. The eyes continued to flutter for a moment, then flew open. Gracefully, the body sat up and surveyed the room. It—he—was trying to assess its surroundings.

“How do you feel?” James asked tentatively.

“William? Is that my name?” His deep voice resonated throughout the room. His eyes stopped on the bespectacled man in a dark green, cable knit sweater, who stood next to the table. He looked to be in his fifties with tired blue eyes and short, graying, brown hair.

“Yes. Your name is William. And my name is James. I am your creator.”

The AI tilted his head to the side. His dark brown eyes rose to meet James’. “You’re ill. You ha—”

“I-I know,” James interrupted. “Do you know what you are?”

Will held up his hands and flexed the digits. “Am I awake, or am I programmed to feel awake?”

James smiled and sat in a chair near the wall. Excitement welled up inside him. “The fact you even ask that question gives me hope that you are exactly what you’re meant to be.”

“I’m not human,” Will stated.

“No, you’re far more advanced. I was able to correlate specific patterns of the central nervous system with emotions and thought processes to create something beyond a program—an organism. You are the first AI ever to have this organism installed.”

They held each other’s gaze for a moment before James broke contact and continued.

“This evolutionary system will gradually alter and determine your choices based on the human interaction you experience throughout your life, much like a regular person. Over time—I’m not sure how long—but over time, you will start to engage in a more human-like behavior. You will continue to write code as a sentient being.”

Will canted his head and blinked rapidly. “I’ll be able to freely write my own code?”

“To a degree. There are restrictions, uh, goal-oriented programs. More specifically, there is a source code which will prevent you from accessing data that can alter or corrupt your program. Once certain milestones are crossed, you will have the ability to act upon your own thoughts and emotions.” James looked at Will and let out a deep sigh. The expunged breath formed a visible cloud over his face before it dissipated. “For the time being, I need you to remain here in the lab until I’m certain your program is fully functional and is safe enough.”

“Safe enough for what?” William asked.

James didn’t answer.

About the Author:
Rosie Weir has never been what most would call ‘conventional’. When most kids were glued to Sesame Street, she was watching Hitchcock films on PBS and fueling her passion for storytelling. By eleven, she had dismissed her math assignments to write a play that was later produced by her school, and by thirteen, had vehemently argued—and won—her right to read The Exorcist. At some point in her development, family, teachers and friends threw their hands in the air, and Rosie’s expansive imagination was left to run wild. Her debut novel, Adamantine is scheduled to be released on June 1, 2020. Find out more about it in the Books Section.
