Library of Congress Control Number: 2024937323
306 pages
A very special collection of poems and song lyrics that explore ‘darkness’ in all its many forms— the supernatural, grief, PTSD, loss, the unknown, death, and even joy.

Darkness itself is not always bad or negative. This volume collects poems about darkness by some of the greatest writers of all time –including Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, William Butler Yeats, John Donne, and many others.

Each poem was selected by one of today’s top creators who also provided insightful commentary. Contributors include writers (Neil Gaiman, RL Stine, Alma Katsu, Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, and many others), actors (Amber Benson, Harold Perrineau, etc), filmmakers (Shane Black, John Russo, etc), and more.

There are also short essays from health care professionals who explore and explain the nature of darkness.

Poet LindaAnn LoSchiavo: The Importance of Writing the Historical Witch Poem

The Importance of Writing the Historical Witch Poem
Historical witches and suicides get a bad rap. Instead of media coverage exploring the human being’s life, the point of fascination becomes the gruesome finale. In the case of a suicide, the where and how to provoke the most curiosity. Pills? Drowning? Asphyxiation? As one example, singer-author Susannah McCorkle was accorded far more news coverage for her dramatic leap from her Manhattan balcony at age 55 than for her entire career.

So-called “witches” fared even worse since their lives were extinguished by others due to Britain’s Witchcraft Acts or the 1692 persecutions in Salem, Massachusetts when at least 200 men and women were on trial for practicing “the devil’s magic.” Twenty were executed.

In New England, the first locals to be called “witches” were Tituba Indian (c.1680 – c.1693?), Sarah Good (1653 – July 19, 1692), and Sarah Osborne (c. 1643 – May 10, 1692). All three females were considered to be social outcasts –though for different reasons. Tituba had been purchased as a slave in Barbados and brought to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.Sarah Good was the daughter of a well-to-do tavern owner who had committed suicide; when his lavish estate was divided among his widow and two sons, the law left seven daughters with a mere pittance. In contrast,Sarah Osborne was a wealthy widow who purchased the freedom of an indentured servant and wed him, an act that violated the town’s norms.

What saved Tituba’s life was her willingness to “confess,” giving testimony about “a coven” in Salem. Eventually set free and sold again, Tituba’s story ended. “She disappeared from the historical record from that point on,” according to historian Veta Smith Tucker.

Reclaiming the life history of long-ago witches is never an easy matter for researchers. Nevertheless, this has merit for its own sake and might even counterbalance the injustice. Poets, writers, musicians, and historical societies can make a difference.

Fortunately, others share my viewpoint about the need for legacy management.

Poetic lyrics of “Sarah Good” by the South Carolina metal band "Buried Voices" commemorate the 39-year-old woman who died in her prison cell instead of “confessing.”

Thanks to the Peabody Historical Society, the last two victims of Salem’s witch hunting, farmer Giles Corey (c. August 1611 – September 19, 1692) and Martha Corey (c.1619 – September 22, 1692) have their own memorial at Salem Farms (now Peabody). The 150-acre property the Coreys had once owned has been revitalized through a multi-year project completed in November 2018. In addition to a large fountain, two docks, a gazebo, and picnic tables, there are two memorial stones for Giles and Martha Corey along with new signage telling their life stories and explaining the unfair verdicts and cruel deaths they faced.

Perhaps ashamed about this miscarriage of justice, Salem judges decided they would no longer accept “spectral evidence” during a trial, which brought accusations to an abrupt halt in Massachusetts. And though magistrates in Connecticut and New York were disinclined to punish an adult accused of witchcraft, level-headed tolerance did not extend to townsfolk who were quick to shun or harass anyone who was outspoken, reclusive, or different– such as Hulda, known as “the Westchester witch.”

A plain-faced, unmarried Bohemian immigrant who lived alone in the woods, Hulda inspired gossip and awe throughout Westchester County. In the third paragraph of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (published in 1820), Washington Irving refers to her: “Some say that the place was bewitched by a High German doctor, during the early days of the settlement…”The foreigner’s keen knowledge of medicinal herbs and frequent trade with native indigenous tribes made her the object of constant speculation among the Dutch villagers. “He was a brave man who passed the cottage of the witch, even in the daytime,” wrote historian Edgar Mayhew Bacon in “Chronicles of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow” (published in 1897).

Fortunately, even modern storytellers refused to let Hulda’s deeds go unnoticed. Her reputation grew with the popularity of current books such as Jonathan Kruk’s “Legends and Lore of Sleepy Hollow and the Hudson Valley” (published in 2011), which devoted a chapter to the “witch of Sleepy Hollow.” Tourists would congregate at Old Dutch Church, puzzled that Hulda had no memorial there, irate that no sign was posted near her former cabin by Spook Rock.

Finally, the historical society made amends. According to The Times-Union newspaper: In 2019, a headstone, crafted in the style of an 18th-century monument with a winged soul soaring above her name, was erected at the Old Dutch Church burial ground, remembering “Hulda of Bohemia” who “died c. 1777. Herbalist, Healer, Patriot. Felled by British while protecting the Militia. Buried here in gratitude for her sacrifice.”
Take a moment to appreciate the irony herein.

Fictional witches come in many forms—good and bad, Witches of the East and Witches of the West, Baba Yaga, Sabrina, etc. — and yet all are appreciated because of supernatural abilities invested in them by wordsmiths. When a poem or story includes a witch, power is the key factor that sets the character apart. In contrast, society did Hulda and others wrong because they had no power.

In her article for Tor, Sarah Gailey expanded upon this concept: “When we write witches, we are writing about our expectations of women, and what we hope—and fear—they would do if they had access to power. Fictional witches act as ciphers that help us understand something that seems at once mysterious and brilliant and sinister: a woman’s ultimate, unlimited potential… realized.”

Bewitchment is also on the mind of Fire Lyte, a Simon and Schuster author who has interviewed self-identified witches as well as fairy experts, paranormal investigators, etc. on his podcast “Inciting A Riot.” In an article for Writer’s Digest, Fire Lyte explained: “The witch is typically portrayed as having eschewed societal norms and found power elsewhere that allows them to right wrongs and reach an equity they’ve previously been denied.”

Several poems on historical witches are in my manuscript, “Always Haunted.” The pen is mightier than life stories crumbled into anonymous dust. The act of writing resuscitates a historical witch. I encourage readers to dig into the archives, find your witches, and let them breathe, dance, and charm on the page.

Ritual
These men got what they deserved.

She looks down at the fresh grave,
breathing the sour odors of wet earth
and the recent sweat of the diggers.
Dressed in mourners' black, naturally.
Far from the smoky lanterns of the street,
the meat roasting on the stoves,
and the violence and money
men waste on brief entertainment.

She’s the youngest; her sisters and
mother always know where she is.

In front of her, three short steps beyond
the dark soil, is the wooden cross
with the neatly carved name.
The carpenter here does fine work.

She rubs a swollen lip. It will heal
and fade like the others, and this one
will not leave a scar. They all,
mother and sisters, bear record
on their skin from men like this one.

These men deserved what they got.

You’re the one that makes it right,
her sisters tell her. You were born knowing
where to cut, they admire. Our angel
sent to protect us. Small and quick,
shadow-to-shadow, under dim windows,
too clever to be seen, the deed done
swiftly by a small hand and a sharp
thin blade where no one looks.

And when suspicion arises?
“She’s the baby, we don’t let her out.”
“We always know where she is.”

What more can women do
but protect each other?

Knife in hand now, she steps forward.
The turned earth gives a little
under her boots. One hand on top
of the cross, she hacks at the letters.
They splinter and crack, until
there is bare wood cleaved and cut
where a name once stood.

These men deserve what they get.
She’s the baby, her mother and sisters
always know where she is.

Then she’s gone in her black dress
before any—alive or dead—can notice her,
this cemetery ritual complete.

Hollow: A Love Like A Life
by Jazalyn
Genre: Epic Poetry, Contemporary Poetry, Paranormal Ghost Romance
A ghost spirit of dark's universe falls in love with a ghost spirit of light's universe, and while They cannot meet, for They wander around separate realms and spacetimes, They live Their love through a secret and sacred interaction.

They are light years APART.
But there is INVISIBLE possession.
A precious NEED bridges the range.

A SECRET LANGUAGE.
A SACRED ENERGY.

A distant BOND is created.
An EVOLUTION of the SOULS.
Will they ever MEET for REAL?
And in what FORM?

A supernatural paranormal romance poetic novel of mystical and spiritual time travel, epitome of confessional metaphysical and existential love that is seen in space opera.

I prefer the dark
And often I cry
But is it so sad?

You prefer the light
And you smile
But are you happy?

Our eyes see
Different things
But our thoughts
Are aligned

And I’m wondering
Why I love you
When we can’t live
The same life

Author talks about her book
When one falls in love wants to live the feeling, but what happens if reality doesn't favor it? Can there be long-lasting and effective romance without possession and even without any previous introduction? In Jazalyn's supernatural paranormal fantasy romance "Hollow: A Love Like A Life", the lovers transform into ghosts, their love transcends the physical dimension and becomes spiritual in order to be experienced.

Jazalyn is a progressive author-poet of magical realism and surrealism. Her style is a new proposition for literature. Her main goal is the audience to relate, so she sacrifices her own self in first, second and third person expressions for the sake of art.

In "Hollow", the in-love ghost spirits talk to each other through an abyssal realm and who tells what to whom is left for the reader to identify which creates a mystery and a romantic suspense.

They use a secret language that only their soul can decode and they paradoxically gain sacred energy which provides them with strength and courage to live more sustainably.

The one ghost spirit belongs in light's universe and the other ghost spirit belongs in the dark's universe. The two absolute opposites. One of the two has to make the sacrifice to reach the other. But there's fear of the unknown. So they build their own medium which creates a silent romance.

The plot: "Two ghost spirits live their love despite being in different universes, in light’s and in dark’s, through secret language filling them sacred energy."

You fall in love with someone when you live something with them either directly or indirectly. So love is life. You are born from love. So life is love. In Jazalyn's "Hollow: A Love Like A Life" poetic novel, the love is like life and the life is like love. Because there are obstacles and unusual circumstances. The most important ones are location and way of life. But still somehow the feelings are preserved and defy the laws of nature.

Jazalyn aims to revolutionize poetry with a mixture with prose fiction and combined genres of literature. She has attracted enormous attention on social media where she shares evergreen verses from her sophisticated books and her riddling short stories.

A dark fantasy magical realism poetic novel that endures urban social issues and inequality, and challenges self esteem, self help, self improvement, self development, healing.

by Jazalyn
A socially underprivileged rose witnesses unpleasant events and behaviors that threaten Her inner peace and is determined to set life and love aside in order to find Her true, pure and moral parts of character.

30 petals of MOOD and STATUS.

A society full of INJUSTICES and UNFAIRNESS.

A ROLE She doesn't want to play.

A RAGE. A RAVE.
A PAST that leads to HATE.
A RARE SOUL.
A wishful CHANGE of HEART.
She AROSE and She ROSE.
From IGNORANCE to STRENGTH.
A FUTURE that should lead to LOVE.

But can there be LOVE?

A dark fantasy magical realism poetic novel that endures urban social issues and inequality, and challenges self esteem, self help, self improvement, self development, healing.

I never knew how to have
I've learned to live without love
And I can't change all of a sudden
Something's got to happen

Author talks about her book
What would the flower rose say if it could speak? A rose that's suffering from bad treatment and observations tries to overcome a past of hate to become the heart that belongs in a future of love in Jazalyn's psychological urban fantasy, dark romance poetry novel "Rose: Future Heart" that urges for change, self-esteem, self-help, healing, self-improvement, self-love, self-compassion, self-development.

Jazalyn is a progressive author-poet of surrealism and magical realism. Her style is unique and surfaces the subconscious. Her expressions in first, second and third person are not necessarily her endorsements but an artistic style of audience relation.

A rose is a beautiful and popular flower associated with the feelings of love. It is famously gifted from partner to partner single or in a bouquet. Sometimes rose petals are used in romantic scenes. Jazalyn's poetic novel is a contrasting irony to this tradition. The protagonist becomes a rose whose petals are fighting negativity and the only way to reach positivity is isolation.

Instead of endorsing love the rose disapproves it to highlight its decay that renders useless and unnecessary loving moments that in a later time lead to misfortune. The star rose has been heartbroken from temporary romance that transforms into evil, and from social bullying. She wants to realize there is no truth and that she must avoid the trap of being fooled again not only in romance but also by all other traps of life. So she isolates herself from any kind of living to reconsider situations and find the self she wants to reflect.

The plot: "A mentally and physically tortured rose is trying through introversion to avoid society’s violence so as to retain her true, pure and moral character. The rare rose strives to turn a blurry past into a bright future".

Every change is difficult and needs a process and time. This book is the process. The past was what it was, but it is gone and doesn't help anyone to be reminded because if it's unpleasant it is inevitable to lead to hate something that only makes things worse. The future should not be hate. The future will not repeat the same mistakes. And ideally the future should be filled with love, but another kind of love not erotic love. A love that evolves everyone in the best directions and makes all dreams come true.

Gradually, the rose gets relieved from all the pain that enraged her and forced her to rave and takes the initiative to lead a new life that will wake her up towards a better quality of lifestyle. The rose realized that love is not real but a delusion, and rather than an ally to happiness it is actually an obstacle, so she refrains from answering love's calls in order to focus on what really matters in life, a path she could have followed sooner but missed due to an unavoidable backstreet influence from an unjust and unfair society. She lost valuable time in ignorance but now she wishes to find the courage to continue undisturbed in better routes.

Jazalyn combines poetry with prose to embrace contemporary and modern ways of literature. She has had success on social media with her poem excerpts and poetic short stories.

"Rose: Future Heart" is available in all big online book stores globally.

A post-apocalyptic techno thriller poetic novel that emulates psychological reactions of a serious medical and technological global emergency and provides philosophical insights on the world's best direction.

by Jazalyn
Three robotic viruses are released from unknown forces and compete with each other exposing crimes, with humanity’s scale of existence oscillating between total destruction and reinventing recovery.

A REVELATION of the THOUGHTS.

An AWAKENING for the HIDDEN reality.

A MADNESS pandemic.

A WAR of ESPIONAGE.

Whose VIRUS is which?

Is it too late for reinstating?

The PANIC button pushed.

An attempt to erase the MEMORIES.

Can an EVIL virus SAVE the world?

A post-apocalyptic techno thriller poetic novel that emulates psychological reactions of a serious medical and technological global emergency and provides philosophical insights on the world's best direction.

It's unfair
To be guilty
When no one
Is innocent

Author talks about her book
Can there be viruses that cause madness or save the world instead of infecting traditionally? There can be. In Jazalyn's apocalyptic techno thriller poetry novel "vViIrRuUsS: I Never Forget" related with the genres: war fiction, historical fiction, psychological fantasy, survival fiction, medical thriller, crime fiction, philosophical fantasy, dystopia, science fiction.

Jazalyn is a controversially progressive surreal author-poet that communicates all the angles of a story without necessarily endorsing a single point of view and everything she mediates in the first, second or third person.

In her latest poetic novel "vViIrRuUsS", advanced robotic nanotechnology hacks people's bodies and makes them vulnerable revealing truths and lies which affects their psychological state. Everyone is in danger, but also everyone can be dangerous. A discovery exposes the one thing in common: they are all guilty.

People acquire a turbulent mental state and start accuse one another but not because they are truly hurt or care for the common good, it's fear someone else will rush to accuse themselves so they kind of try to beat any outcry against them. They don't see their own flaws but the others' flaws and condemn to feel better about themselves. To pass the message that they are against criminal acts so as no one to believe they are themselves criminals when someone else accuses them either with the truth or with deceit.

The plot: "Various viruses expose pasts, thoughts, memories, crimes, undisclosed secrets and the true reality, and cause madness. Who is guilty? Who is innocent?"

Jazalyn explores a world where there is no innocence or guilt which renders every conviction as unfairness since others continue to live freely and innocently for the same crime that went unnoticed or was covered somehow. It's all subjective interpretations and opposite views can all be true depending on each observer's interests. The belief systems are not examining all possibilities and therefore are not objective but akin to what secures individuals peace of mind and what satisfies their status in each period of time.

It's not one person's experience that the book narrates. These are scattered thoughts and dialogues as monologues from multiple sources. Jazalyn creates an atmospherical plot around a collection of poems-puzzles of a series of unfortunate events. The poetic narration is subject to all imaginations. There is a mystery and suspense that lets the reader wonder what's going on and imagine all possible scenarios of past, present and future outcomes.

The dystopian poems expose the pain that is rooted in an unhealthy logic which instead of focusing on the future is relying on the past conspiring and inventing ways how to destroy others to rise while the ethical job is to forget everything and everyone and work hard forwards so as to gain the fair way.

The title "vViIrRuUsS" depicts the name of the virus that attempts to help everyone recover. The subtitle "I Never Forget" is a phrase indicating that viruses surface memories which once remembered are difficult to be forgotten and neglected.

Jazalyn introduces new ways of writing and doing literature combining poetry with prose in abstract and absurd settings. She is popular on social media where she shares verses from her books and short stories.

Welcome to Vampire Musings. My name is Bertena, and I am the publisher of this macabre book. Since I was a small child, I have loved vampires and even spent most of my college years studying the Lure of the Vampire. From these studies, I met so many wonderful writers, musicians, and academicians who share this love as well. I have noticed that the lure of the vampire comes and goes over time, but those true to the monsters never really leave. Because of this, I wanted to pull together my friends and allow us to share our passion for the monsters with fans from around the world.

I hope that you enjoy these short stories and essays as much as I have enjoyed conversing with the writers about all things vampires!

In this book, you will find authors who are fiction writers, professors, musicians, wine connoisseurs, and even a psychic vampire who lives the lifestyle and shares her gift and knowledge with us. We hope that the stories, poetry, and song lyrics will seduce and mesmerize you. There is something here for everyone, so please enjoy!

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy your night!

LGBTQ Poetry: The Moon Resides in Her Heart by Isabel Scheck

by Isabel Scheck
November 28, 2021
Poetry, LGBTQ poetry
Sapphic Haikus (LGBTQ poetry) In which some people are too pretty not to write about; sometimes they just have moons residing in their hearts.

One
Pretty as rainbows,
I do adore pretty girls,
Cute as anything,

Two
I think she’s pretty
Cute smiles and shy glances,
But she loves me not

Three
Meteors pound when
she’s around in the form of
heartbeats and sorrow.

Interview: Fantasy Author and Poet A.L. Butcher + giveaway

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I’ve been writing stories and poems for as long as I can remember. At school, I would often get asked to write a short story or poem for a class event. I used to run roleplaying games – mostly fantasy or scifi at university, often making up or adapting plots and storylines for the players. My first published novel game out of one of these adventures – we didn’t use the idea I’d had as the group unfortunately had to break up and my friend convinced me to adapt the story to a world I’d created for something else. That lead to the novel.

The short stories in the book I’m featuring here are not related to that world but came out of other inspiration or projects. I guess poetry is my way of dealing with things that move me, upset me, inspire me or bring a lot of emotion. Most of it is quite dark – I have been told I’m cynical – and I get depression and anxiety so to an extent that’s in there too. Often it’s inspired by political events – war, social upheaval, the wrath of nature, that sort of thing.

What is something unique/quirky about you?
When I was little I was totally obsessed with squirrels and wanted to be a squirrel when I grew up. Sadly that didn’t happen, but I do live in a house bordering woodland and we get several squirrels in the garden every day. It drives my dogs bonkers.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!
I worked as a dresser at the local theatre for ten years, dressing actors. It’s quite a bizarre job, really. A lot of fun but can be odd. I worked on a production of Winnie the Pooh, and was backstage having a discussion about philosophy with a depressed donkey and an owl. I also worked on Scooby-Doo. I spent at least a fortnight after saying ‘Scooby Dooby Doooo!’

What are some of your pet peeves?
Arrogance. Hatred. Willful stupidity.

What are some of your favourite things?
Books, music, animals, history, science, writing, the Phantom of the Opera. And cheese. I really love cheese.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
Reading, writing, cuddling my dogs and listening to really loud music. Probably Oh Fortuna, Nessum Dorma, Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence, War of the World (Jeff Wayne), Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and a bit of Meatloaf.

Who is your hero and why?
Sir David Attenborrough. Why – he’s been a driving force for the environment and the love of animals for 60 years. He’s awesome.

What kind of world ruler would you be?
Cynical and sarcastic, I dare say.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
Reading, listening to audiobooks, walking my dogs, gaming with my partner, writing, watching movies.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
Lyrical, cynical, creative, tired.

Do you have a favorite movie?
Lots – 9, Wall-e, Lord of the Rings, Lost Boys, Dead Poets Society, Schindler’s List, Star Wars (not the recent ones), anything with Ironman in it.

Amber firelight flickered in the small grate, casting a dancing pattern on the grubby walls of the cellar-bar known as The Cavern. It was, some said, hypnotic; others said the fire heard and saw all – for even in summer it was never truly out, merely banked to embers. Fire had been the friend and enemy of man since Prometheus snatched it from the gods, and this particular blaze had been smouldering for years. Some said decades, even centuries, and that it watched all that went on. Whether this was true Wolfgang had no idea, but it was not a normal fire and such tales served his purpose.

The Cavern had stood on this spot for at least three hundred years, and before this, various structures from longhouse to army tent to inn had been in the vicinity. This land was old, saturated with history. And blood. Battles had been fought, lives taken, lost and even given and through it, all the Cavern stood in one form or another, and its fire burned. Creatures who lived in the twilight world of the undead were drawn to this place. Perhaps it was the blood, perhaps there was something special here. Life was a lure, to those who possessed a parody of it, but in truth, no one really knew or dared to discover. It was the sort of place no one asked too many questions or expected honest answers and so those patrons with things to hide and enemies aplenty caroused in The Cavern in an uneasy truce. The fire saw all, and so did its current keeper. For now, both the fire and The Cavern had Wolfgang’s undead patronage, and both knew it.

Wolfgang Feuerleiben turned his bright hazel eyes despondently towards the blaze and shivered; as usual, he could not seem to get warm even close as he was to it. This place, generally, was cold, as old buildings often were, even with the impressive blaze. Wolfgang had no internal heat, nor did any of his kind; but habits are hard to shake and even a vampire likes to be warm. Bodies with no inward heat found themselves stiff and slow and it wasn’t like a vampire could bask in the sun. Wolfgang surmised it was a throwback to his human past. Memories faded, became corrupted or were forgotten; it was a curse and a blessing – an elder had told him. Wolfgang considered this – ‘memories went with morality. One could not be haunted if one had no memory of past sins and past transgressions’ the Elder had said. Yet almost all his kind suffered nightmares – or rather daymares and the Vampire Scholar who’d propounded his theory had died raving in a fire of his own making. Driven mad by the guilt of split blood. It was hard to be a monster. And much, much harder to be a monster pretending to be a man.
