The international best selling saga continues....

All my life, I've had plans.

Dying the day before beginning the first year of my surgical residency wasn't one of them.

Finding myself drafted in the eternal war between good and evil wasn't one of them, either.

And dealing with friends, enemies, and lovers I don't remember?

Definitely not in my plans.

Winged: The Complete Series Box Set
$.99

Being confused and a little disappointed about the lack of character development and storyline information in this read I did check around (after I was finished) and found that there are 10 other "Winged" series installments. I thought I was reading a first in a series! Surprise! No wonder I had so many questions about who, where and what the purpose was of all the archangels and "others". I was drawn in to the story but as I kept reading, I thought..."there must be more history somewhere". I must assume that the characters of Joanne, Gideon, Galbrial, Raphael and the others were developed in previous issues. And I thought that Lucinda (a newly deceased) was the main character when in reality she will probably be another addition to the "winged" alliance (or not depending on the outcome). That was the other thing that threw me off..it ended with a cliffhanger that must be resolved in the next issue (hence my thoughts about it being first in a series). I know I am probably not making a lot of sense but now you know how I felt while reading this as a stand-a-lone.

I thought the premise was an interesting take on the here-after. But I couldn't understand why there was little use of supernatural powers and that everyone in the "compound" (even that threw me) was able to get ill, hurt, depressed, married and bear children. Hmm. Sounds like an alternate universe theme. Don't get me wrong, that's an OK scenario but without the history of the winged, I felt a little lost in the telling. The idea of a new recruit having to go through a tough evaluation was clever and perhaps the take on "God" a little metro and would appeal to some additional audiences. The possession of a deceased by another deceased is a decidedly interesting twist.

I really enjoyed the penmanship and snarky, sometimes humorous dialogue. Apparently I am not alone since the previous 10 in the series have gotten rave reviews for the most part. I just started behind the 8 ball and will need to run the table before I can probably give an accurate assessment of this series. Was this book enough to keep you intrigued about the next installment? I would say a definite "heck yes!" if you have read the other issues and a "sure" if you haven't read the others and make it to the end with that big cliffhanger. I would like to find out what happens to Gabriel and the new "possessed" recruit Lucinda.

Getting 3.5 "shooting in the dark" sheep!

Excerpt:
Owner of the Choice Buy store in Michigan, wizard prince Gabriel Light sees his employee, wolf shifter Emma Singer, fall off a tall ladder. He’s just managed to catch her and set her on her feet when her angry pack alpha shows up.

Bzz-bzzt. A buzz like an angry hornet stung wizard prince Gabriel Light’s ears the moment the predator slunk into the store.

Cap’n Crunch me. Gabriel had magically alarmed the door for just such an event, but why now, when he’d finally gotten a semi-innocent excuse to wrap his arms around this warm bundle of soft, sweet-smelling heaven?

Emma. It felt like he’d been dying to hold her forever. Now, with her in his arms, was the first time in months he could breathe.

But that buzzing alarm told him the approaching beast was male, a wolf shifter, and, from that level of sting, Emma’s alpha. The beast was not going to appreciate seeing her in another man’s arms.

She started trembling, no doubt in response to the alpha’s rampant fight-club stench, a musk even Gabriel could smell. He tried to ease her tension with a joke.

“Hey, Emma. How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?”

She skewered him with a disbelieving stare, icing his flesh. He’d blundered, she didn’t understand he was trying to comfort her, nobody gets my skewed sense of humor… Then she gulped and said, “Eight? Like, um, eight legs?”

Immediately his world brightened. “Nope. Ten tickles. Get it? Tentacles?”

She managed a tiny laugh, tinkling bells to his ears, and her body relaxed slightly under his arms. “That was such a dad joke.”

He loved that she, of all the people he knew, actually laughed at his jokes. He smiled into her eyes like a besotted fool.

Of course, that was when the he-wolf prowled into view.

Gabriel wondered how far he could get with the wolf by protesting his intentions were honorable. Probably not far. The creature was only barely in human form.

The wolfman was medium height but had a face like a dented shovel and a body like a trash compactor, his muscles-on-muscles popping in a stringy T-shirt that barely qualified past no-shirt-no-shoes-no-service.

Worse, with the hair sprouting everywhere, nose elongating like a snout, and lengthening canines, this alpha was dangerously pissed.

Hard to reason with a pissed-off wolf. They tended to bite first then ask questions…never.

Yet instead of releasing Emma, Gabriel’s hand dropped from her clenched jaw to open protectively on her back.

“The fuck?” the wolfman snarled.

Something inside Gabriel snarled right back.

Pretty little shifter, wizard prince—their taboo love could burn the barriers between worlds.

Shifter Emma Singer has more problems than she can shake her pretty little wolf tail at. Her heirloom journal is missing, her pack alpha wants her for his harem, and her family plans to sell her to him. Even her wicked little crush on her hot boss is doomed—why would six-and-a-half feet of handsome royal wizard want a boring, good-girl iota shifter like her? Not to mention her only power is going berserker—that's a real relation-shipwreck!

Gabriel Light is a wizard prince who turned his back on his exceptional powers after he was accused of causing his parents' death. Now he pours his intellect into his tech business, and hides his naughty, forbidden lust for his pretty shifter clerk. But when his sister is imprisoned, and Emma is kidnapped, it's time for this alpha geek-wizard to decloak with all laser cannons blazing. Only one problem—how can he be sure Emma won’t get caught in the crossfire?

Then Gabriel and Emma stumble on hidden magic, a key to power beyond imagining—if they can stay alive long enough to use it. But if Emma unleashes her berserker wolf on their enemies, can Gabriel draw her back from the brink before she destroys everyone in her path?

Warning: Contains a hot wizard prince panting to bring out a good-girl shifter's naughty side. Accidental voyeurism, deliberate orgasms, a jealous rival wizard, and fun with prophecy.

Review
Iota wolf shifter Emma Singer is accustomed to second string. She’s learned to take the lead from others as her station in pack life dictates. And so, from afar she pines after her boss “alpha geek” Dr. Gabriel Singer. Unbeknownst to Emma, Singer is a wizard prince in addition to the owner of Choice Buy. Singer, an extremely powerful witch, knows exactly what Emma is and he also knows exactly what the penalty for a shifter-witch match would be. Death.

This is a quirky, whimsical little love story. It’s imaginative, well written, well crafted. I enjoyed the latter portion of the book with its intense action and character development. I especially enjoy Hughes’ food description; it’s vivid and sensual. Unfortunately, the characters just weren’t my thing. Emma’s character is built on her weakness, and while this is an excellent format to build and strengthen a character through the course of the story, her stuttering, neediness, and lack of confidence was a bit of a chore for me to read. Gabriel wears sweater vests … constantly. While this may appeal to some, I just can’t get behind the passionate ripping off of a sweater vest. Gabriel is kind and considerate, which is lovely and tender, but again not a quality I like in my alphas. Call me dysfunctional, I know, but a guy who uses expletives such as “crunchberry crap” and “bacon-fried damn” doesn’t earn this reviewer’s ardour.

If you like your romance sweet and sensual, Mind Mates is your book.

by Diversion Publishing

Cate's enemies aren't just surrounding her—they're inside her head.

Therapist Cate Duncan has just accepted a job with the MacGregor Group, a unique collective of alternative healers. She’s excited by the prospect of honing her empathic healing techniques among others like herself—aura readers, telepaths, crystal healers, and more. The fact that Cate just started dating Ben, her magnetic new boss, is an added bonus.

Before Cate can settle into her new routine, the poisoning of a prominent neuroscientist draws the entire MacGregor Group into both a federal investigation and an even more insidious threat. Protected by Ben’s former Marine Corps unit, Cate and her colleagues must use their alternative healing methods to solve the crime as their patient clings to life. The responsibility of discovering crucial information falls to Cate and her parapsychological powers.

But for Cate, unraveling the mystery means reopening wounds that had just begun to heal—and in the environment of the Marine Corps unit, differences between Cate and Ben become clearer, straining their budding romance. When a new crisis looms, Cate must trust in her colleagues’ gifts and the strength of Ben’s love, finding the courage to confront her deepest and most terrifying demons—or her own life will be at risk.

Getting 4 "Send me in Coach" sheep!
I am so glad I continued with book 2 of this story.  Cate is still in her training program for paranormals but has officially joined the team organized to help other paranormals in need.  The story seamlessly picked up from book 1 with the same friends and cohorts as she was thrown into a tragic case in just her second week of training.

I found myself engaged from page 1, gaining more interesting descriptions on their skill sets and how they are put to use.  Confined to a high security government installation, the team must try to get critical information from a comatose scientist regarding his attempted murder.  Wow, if this were only available in real life!  Although Cate was Plan B and was initially just along for the ride, she finds herself front and center in the solution to solve this mystery.  Still being a little headstrong and used to making her own decisions she puts herself in a couple dangerous situations that require her rescue much to the chagrin of her team and the Marines bent on keeping her safe (or corralled.....same thing right?).

Her now official "relationship" with her boss Ben (Gee...that was quick!) has him pulling his hair to try and keep her safe.  So a little romance is included her but nothing too spicy since one rule of the training program is no intimate sexual contact!  It interferes with the psyche don't you know (well, duh).

An inviting cast of characters and nice writing style makes me hope to see more of Cate's journey!

Review: All the Broken Places (The Healing Edge Book 1)

Denise's Review
Getting 5 sheep

Cate has decided that she will go to work for the MacGregor Group, a group of alternative healers that she is beginning to call friends. She has started her two weeks of interning to finish off her training and she is excited to learn more about her empathic healing techniques and the gifts the others have. Before Cate can really get started on her internship she agrees to join the group on a secret mission with Ben’s former Marine Corps unit. She is hoping that she will learn more about the man she is falling in love with as well as have a chance to put some of her talents to use.

The protective nature of Ben is so charming and even though Cate has some fragile features her strength comes out in abundance. A really enjoyable look into the different paranormal gifts and healing techniques that may exist. The passion between Ben and Cate is sizzling while the other relationships in the group are intriguing too. I’m not sure if more books are coming in this series but I sure hope so!
