Angels, Demons and Sex...Oh, my!

Where Demons Fear to Tread by Stephanie Chong

Fledgling guardian angel and yoga teacher Serena St. Clair dares enter Devil's Paradise nightclub on a mission—to retrieve the wayward Hollywood "It Boy" she's assigned to protect. But she's ambushed by the club's owner, arch demon Julian Ascher. The most powerful demonic entity in Los Angeles, Julian is handsome as sin, a master of temptation who loves nothing more than corrupting pleasure–seeking humans. He won't release the lost soul Serena is supposed to guard. Unless she accepts his dangerous wager…

After the disastrous way his human life ended, Julian vowed that no woman would get the better of him again. Yet this sexy–sweet angel, smelling of fresh ocean air and happiness, triggers centuries–old feelings. Now, their high–stakes game of seduction, where angels fall from grace and where demons fear to tread, will lead them either to an eternity in hell or a deliciously hot heaven.

This story had a strong start with very solid writing. I really enjoyed Julian’s character, a smug, confident, demon…what isn’t there to like? ;) He also oozed sexuality like any good demon should, but I found the heroine, Serena, rather cliché. She was to much the blond haired wide-eyed naïve, pure of heart and spirit, virginal angel. There are some very sensual scenes where Julian tries to seduce Serena (he had my heart all a flutter), but when they finally had sex, it was erotic and seemed really out place in this story.

I felt like this story would have been perfect as a novella that focused on just our forbidden lovers. Instead there is a very prominent secondary character, Nick, who seems like a real third wheel in the story. He wasn’t as fully developed as he should have been considering his role in the story. The story does have some good old nasty villains that are hell bent on revenge and betrayal.

This book wasn’t my bottle of Pepsi. There are lots of people that loved it so I recommend you check out other reviews before making your decision.

The story was a 2 1/2 Sheep read, but I am bumping it up to 3 Sheep cause Julian is hawt! ;)

  1. I recently read this one as well and think your review is pretty spot on. I enjoyed the read and think the series has potential, but there were some elements that were frustrating to me. I gave it a 4, but it was a tough decision just how to rate it. I think I do not like the rating system - it seems limited, but then reading is so subjective anyway LOL I just want to enjoy the ride. Thanks or sharing today my friend.
