Slice and Dice: The Slasher Film Forever (2012)
75 min  -  Documentary
Director: Calum Waddell
High Rise Productions

A celebration of slasher cinema - from PSYCHO to the present day, with a focus on highlighting many of the genre's forgotten cult classics, deconstructing how to survive a slice and dice movie and meditating upon why it is almost always a final girl and rarely a final guy... this is a documentary which is designed for both the biggest fan of "mad maniac" movies and the person who may only have seen HALLOWEEN and SCREAM. Either way, this is a documentary that proves the SLASHER FILM is truly FOREVER!

It includes J.S. Cardone, who directed the classic "video nasty" THE SLAYER and later wrote and produced the STEPFATHER and PROM NIGHT remakes; Corey Feldman, who killed Jason in FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER; Scott Spiegel of HOSTEL and INTRUDER fame; legendary Brit director Norman J. Warren; FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE NEW BLOODs John Carl Buechler; and such recent genre kingpins as Patrick Lussier, who edited the SCREAM movies and directed MY BLOODY VALENTINE and DRIVE ANGRY, Adam Green of HATCHET, Dave Parker of THE HILLS RUN RED and Chris Smith of TRIANGLE and SEVERANCE

This is a well-made smorgasbord of slasher goodness that any movie fan can enjoy; I highly recommend checking this one out. And don’t worry, you can close your eyes during the gross parts. Funny thing is, I never watch slasher movies, but I still enjoyed listening to the iconic directors and creators talk about what they love the most. I learned all sorts of behind the scenes trivia and interesting viewpoints about the evolution of slasher movies. Did you know that Jason didn’t wear a hockey mask until the third movie? And most people forget that he wasn’t even the killer in the first one.

It is full of gory clips of everything from Psycho to Saw and a ton of movies I hadn’t heard of. And yes, I closed my eyes for some of it. The documentary is well organized and edited into six sections: “How to survive a slasher film”, “The genre’s greatest hits”, “The final girl”, "Making a memorable movie maniac”, “The secret of a good gore gag”, and “The slasher film forever”.

This is a serious but humorous look into the how’s and why’s of the slasher film’s past and present and the fact that it isn't going to disappeared anytime soon.
