Book Review: Prince of Power by Elisabeth Staab + giveaway

Prince of Power (Chronicles of Yavn #2)
by Elisabeth Staab

Wizards and vampires have been mortal enemies since the beginning. Now Anton, son of the Wizard Master, has one last chance to steal the unique powers of the vampire king's beautiful sister, Tyra...and then kill her. But when he meets Tyra face-to-face, everything changes...

Tyra will stop at nothing to defeat the wizards, until Anton saves her life and she suddenly sees an opportunity she never could have imagined...

As the sparks ignite between them, together they could bring an end to the war that's decimating their people, but only if they can find a way to trust each other...

Prince of Power is the second book in the Chronicles of Yavn series. I haven’t read the first book, King of Darkness, and fortunately you don’t have to read book #1 to enjoy Prince of Power but I wish I had. This book picks up right where book #1 ended, and while Staab does a great job of catching you up, there is so much backstory you miss (oh, the feels!) by jumping in the second book. Prince of Power is Anton and Tyra’s story, which means it is a forbidden love story and my favorite trope. Anton is a wizard, and in this world wizards are B.A.D. They eat the hearts of vampires to gain their powers and Tyra is… you guessed it! A vampire with lots of powers. In book #1 Anton was supposed to capture Tyra and deliver her to his father, the head B.A.D. wizard. Of course Anton falls in love with her while stalking her and in Prince of Power they must overcome serious trust issues, secrets, and Tyra’s family. Very Romeo and Juliet.

I am not a big PNR fan because there is usually not enough world building and complexity to the story arc to keep my interest. I mean how many times can the couple have sex and the story stay fresh? Staab definitely has plenty of story to go around; she made me care about her characters quickly and deeply, including the secondary characters. My favorite was Lee, the Vampire King’s Royal Guard. I am pretty sure his story is next and he will have his hands full with the sassy human Alexia. There is also the story of Xander, who lost his mate months ago to the wizards, and Theresa, who lost her mate only a few weeks ago and just gave birth. Circumstances have thrown them together and it will be a touching story of loss and love. Take all these great characters and place them in a dark and turbulent world with a dash of snark and I am a happy camper.

Elisabeth Staab still lives with her nose in a book and at least one foot in an imaginary world. She believes that all kinds of safe and sane love should be celebrated but she adores the fantasy-filled realm of paranormal romance the best. She lives in Northern Virginia with her family and one big scaredy cat, where she loves to spend time with good friends, go dancing, and sing off-key in her kitchen (when she isn't making characters fall in love, that is).

    1. I've read lots of good PNR, but I have also read lots of not so good there is a line between UF and PNR where they blur into each other. As long as the PNR has a few UF elements I am good :)

  2. I am not sure what you mean by plot trope But I do enjoy alliteration whenever it is used.

  3. I like plots where I can't guess everthing that's going to happen.

  4. My favorite plot trope would have to be when you have to be the Idiot plot. I think a perfect example of this is "Fifty Shades of Grey" the only thing that holds this story together is because they act like idiots. Don't get me wrong I am a romantic at heart, but all that angst and rebounding gives me whiplash.

  5. I love the clueless alpha male. When it takes him serious smacks upside the head to figure out he loves his female I'm happy.

  6. Being a multi genre reader, and enjoying everything from plot lines that are all over the place, to tight lines that go straight from action to action, I can't really choose.

  7. ok - I just like to be kept interested. I hate when I read mysteries and figure out who the killer is before i read half the book. If you throw me a plot twist - ya GOTTA make me believe it. There was established series - and got thrown that a major character had had a child -- and that the memory was erased - HUH??? WHAT??? But the event was explained to where i BELIEVED it!!
    and I'm rambling - sorry

  8. I read the first book in the series last week and loved it:) I'm a sucker for an alpha male and a feisty heroine. Is that a trope?

Oh, and Sharon-- "I mean how many times can the couple have sex and the story stay fresh?" Did you really say that? OMG, I thought we kindred spirits til I read that. *sniff, sniff* Is there really such a thing as too much sex in PNR? Okay, I guess there could be, but as long as it's mixed in with killing the bad guys, snarky humor and witty banter I'm okay with it. LOL

  9. Thank you for the review and the giveaway, Sharon! I am loving the comments about everyone's favorite trope. I think this forbidden love story, and the hero-heroine role-reversal in Prince of Power is one of my faves. Thanks to all of you for checking out the books!

  10. I love Friends to lovers! I also love reunion romances, especially if the guy was an idiot then has to grovel later. Grovelling's good!

  13. Plot trope ? as in trick, or narration. No idea what this means, but I guess I like a plot that you cannot guess the ending of !

  14. Not sure what you meant by Plot tropes. But a story has to have meat to keep me interested, the characters well thought up, and etc.

  18. My favorite plot trope for a PNR is two opposites who don't like each other and think they have nothing in common having to work together towards a common goal.

  23. Since I read pretty much anything that catches my interest, I'm not really sure I have a favorite. Simply, I just love a good story. I love stories with angst, romance, and HEA's. So, pretty much anything that falls in that realm is a possibility ;)

  24. can't say I really have a favorite troupe, I enjoy most of them (sometimes in the mood for one more so than the other, but it varies). If i have to pick a fave it would prob be beauty/beast but just by a smidgen :) not a big fan of secret baby stories as they can be tricky, but have read some & enjoyed them so even that can work for me :)

  25. This sure sounds good. I have this series on my wishlist. My favourite trope, the heroine has to be kick ass and able to safe herself instead of waiting to be saved by the hero. The hero can be alpha, but he will stand beside his woman, and let her make her own decisions.

  26. I like when the female has literally been captured by the man. A little bit of Stockholm Syndrome??

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  27. Well first I had to look up the definition of plot trope and frankly the definition was more confusing that what I am able to glean of its meaning from the content and comments (I know Philistine right?) Here is what I like; I want to read a story that gives me characters that I care about, a taste of action and adventure, and maybe some romance thrown in. I enjoy the smexy if it has a place and is part of the story - so give me some supernatural characters I want to be friends with and I am a happy happy girl ;) Thank you for sharing your fun review. I am hopping over to check out book one, love to start at the beginning ;)
