The Angels are naked and androgynous. They speak in a dreadful harmony with no clear leader. These aren’t biblical cherubs tasked with the protection of the righteous – these are deadly creatures of light that have the power to completely eradicate. Father Montgomery has a sin in his past. While he was studying at the seminary to be a priest, he fell in love with a young woman and after they made love one night, he impregnated her. She gave up the child at a local orphanage. On promise to her after she passes away, the priest must watch over their son, Robert Jones. All this is told intermingled with the current frightening tale of ‘Angels,’ sort of ‘sin eaters’ that have been appearing, and after listening to the sins of humans they will burn them to death or cause them to vanish.
The relationships are fine, but they could have been delved into deeper, especially between Father Montgomery and Robert Jones. The storyline is apocalyptic on a Biblical scale and yet less so, as science fiction is brought into this with physicists making a machine that may bring back light destroyed by black holes, but instead found these beings. Are they truly angels, as they act less angelic than what I learned in Catholicism class. Or demons, as their attitude is more like demons. Or something else?
A paranormal with science fiction elements that fits perfectly for this time of the year between Halloween and Christmas. Tired of the end of the world scenarios with zombies? This novella will fit the bill.
