Mimi Jean Pamfiloff has extended her King Trilogy to include two additional books, Mack, released last year, and her newest release The Ten Club. While I liked The Ten Club, I really wanted to love it. As a King Trilogy devotee, I was beyond excited to rediscover old favourites including the infamous King, an ancient alpha with sex appeal to spare. I was certainly entertained by this book, however, it fell short of what I’ve come to expect from this author.

The book doesn’t really focus directly on The Ten Club, a nefarious secret society of depraved billionaires who act with impunity. Rather, it’s a reload of Mia and King’s relationship should King be devoid of compassion and conscious. The Ten Club is a threat to be sure, however, this threat is never fully realized or explored. This ‘new’ King harkens back to the King he was at the beginning of the trilogy. Only he wasn’t really bad to the core then, just a man cursed and beat down by the pressures of living a half-existence. Confused yet? I think Pamfiloff was counting on it considering The Ten Club is rather rife with recap. I’ll admit I needed some reminders; however, the constant retelling disrupted the flow of the narrative. I feel The Ten Club would’ve been a superior read had it been written more in the spirit of a stand-alone since The King Trilogy has technically concluded.

Fans of The King Trilogy will enjoy the stroll down memory lane. I did. I’ve always like Mia as a main character, and she’s become even feistier with experience. I enjoy Pamfiloff’s writing. She typically does an excellent job balancing suspense, action, and romance. The finale of this book was both intriguing and satisfying. Ultimately I’m torn. For me, The Ten Club was a little like dessert; enjoyable but not entirely necessary.
