She wanted to make her mark. How hard could it be?

In 2130, at Bijoux de L’Etoile, a high-end casino orbiting Earth, you can get anything you desire.

Newly-hired as an investigator, Janey McCallister wants to solve her first big case—the theft of a priceless gem.

When her case of theft escalates to murder and points to the seedy underbelly of world affairs, Janey has to rely on her new team and trust the mysterious insurance investigator, Orlando Valdez—before a killer escapes into the black.

Into The Black is perfect for fans of J.D. Robb’s Eve Dallas books and Killjoys and CSI. It contains a slow-burn romance, enhanced humans, cool high-tech gadgets, a futuristic vision of the Earth, and a tough heroine with secrets.

Janey McCallister is the newly minted head of security for the interstellar casino Bijoux de L’Etoile. Sure, she’d rather lend her talents to a more noble cause, but a casino salary is too lucrative to turn down, especially since Janey is supporting her ailing earth-bound mother. Eager to prove herself to her team, and keep her job, Janey throws herself into a successful theft investigation. But just when Janey thinks she may be gaining traction in her new position, a wealthy casino patron is found murdered in his suite. Janey is tasked with solving the crime with a mandated partner, insurance investigator Orlando Valdez.

Into the Black is an entertaining murder mystery set in a creative futuristic world. Janey’s character is carefully crafted while leaving some details to unfurl in future installments. She is an intelligent, logically thinking main character. Agent McCallister’s burgeoning romance with the mysterious Orlando has also been nicely framed for the series. The slow burn nature of the relationship builds suspense and anticipation.

The plot is fast-paced and interesting. Janey’s tenacious, singular focus drives the story to its conclusion. I really enjoyed Barany’s imaging of a luxurious 2130 space station casino and all its high-tech gadgetry. I look forward to future mysterious adventures in this sci-fi sphere.
