5 "tic-tac", "Stank" Sheep

*squeak* So Captain America...wow, he's pretty...and Iron Man get in a fight...then the Scarlet Witch...boy, did I underestimate her! And then Black Panther comes in (purrrrr) and I really like him...but then Spider-man...who knew he was such a little cinnamon roll...of course then Falcon flies all over the place being really funny...but Tony Stark hurts Antman's feelings and they all fight at the airport and things blow up...Captain America, Bucky, Falcon in a VW Bug...there is a bad guy who wants vengeance...Clint will make you look...I love Bucky Barnes!!!

Okay, I think I covered everything. My 15 year old daughter and I went to opening night IMAX 3D. First we made a stop at the bakery nearby.

We got the theater about an hour early and stood line with a bunch of other nerds. We met Tabby Lou, a local chibi artist http://www.paprika-studios.com/. It was a lot of fun.

First off, I don't recommend seeing it in 3D. The fast moving action scenes with 3D-ness makes it hard to keep up with what's going on. Needless to say, I LOVED it. If you enjoyed all the previous Marvel films, then you need to see this...on the big screen...cause reasons...okay, cause Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, Black Panther, Falcon, Hawkeye. And Spiderman was adorkable. The movie was funnier than I expected, which was good. Falcon, Antman and Bucky are hilarious together. There are epic battles and everyone gets hurt, but that's okay...

I will be seeing it again on a standard screen cause...reasons. I was Team Cap (actually Team Stucky. Don't ask, you probably don't want to know <G>) before the movie and I am still Team Cap. There were superheroes on the other side...I think...doesn't matter.

This is me after the movie. Are those tears of joy or sadness? Muwahahaha!

5 "Bucky was working out" Sheep

So I had waaaaay less caffeine then Sharon did BUT my thoughts are pretty much the same. I will add though that there was ton more girl ass kicking. The chicks usually get the short end of the stick in these films but not so much this time around. So tops off to the gals! 

I also did know the overall story-line for this saga, however seeing it come to life was a much more emotional experience then I expected. It's hard to watch the heros you love fight against each other, but that's life sometimes! You may also be surprised by Aunt May, I sure was.

Make sure to stay tuned until the very very very last credit. There are TWO extra scenes at the end of this one. Good stuff!

Captain America: Hail Hydra!

About a month ago I was browsing my local comic book store looking for any interesting trade paperbacks. Fortunately for me I found one that look quite interesting titled Captain America: Hail Hydra!, which follows Captain America's seventy-year struggle with Hydra and his attempts to foil their Infinitas Agenda. Although the story contained less zombies than I was initially lead to believe (and no time travel for that matter) I was highly satisfied with this story and even learned a little about Captain America's history along the way.

To provide a brief overview of the plot, during the dark days of World War II Captain America and his sidekick Bucky break into a German research facility run by the Thule Society and headed by the sinister Dr. Geist. Cap and Bucky quickly discover that the Thule Society is simply one of countless fronts for Hydra and their Infinitas Agenda, Hydra's attempt to not only achieve immortality but gain total control over life and death. Cap thought he had defeated Hydra in World War II but when the Avengers revive him from the Arctic ice he discovers that Geist, Hydra, and his Resurrection Corps managed to escape the fall of Nazi Germany. With the Avengers and other new allies, Cap manages to defeat Hydra time and time again but somehow the bad guys always seem to be one step ahead. Will Cap be able to stop Hydra once and for all?

The one thing that I really liked about this story was its sense of depth. The Captain America: Hail Hydra! trade paperback collects five issues of the same story arc, all of which were made by different artists. Sergio Cariello, Tom Scioli, Phil Winslade, Kyle Hotz, and Graham Nolan all brought their artistic talents to this story and gave each issue within the trade a unique look and feel while keeping it part of an overarching story. (Also, special mention goes to Tom Scioli, I feel like he really captured the 1960's feel in the issue he illustrated.) In addition the comics really help convey a sense of time to Cap's ongoing struggle with Hydra. We see Cap fight Hydra in the closing days of World War II, only to discover them stronger than ever in the 1960's when the Avengers rescue him from the ice. Even when Steve Rogers's disagreements with the American Government force him to abandon his previous mantle and become simply, "The Captain", Dr. Geist and Hydra remain one of his chief concerns. Cap's war with Hydra continues into the modern day after the Marvel Civil War. Steve Rogers may have passed his shield onto James Barnes, but as commander of S.H.I.E.L.D. he isn't finished trying to foil Hydra's plans. Included in Cap's own story arc are glimpses of Hydra's efforts on the quest to immortality. Hydra's history spans from ancient Mesopotamia and the days of Gilgamesh to the dark torture chambers of the Spanish Inquisition. Although it's a little unbelievable for an evil organization to be thousands of years old, we're dealing with a story that includes literal gods, mutants, and zombies so I shouldn't be surprised at all.

I will admit that I'm still very, very new to being a Captain America fan so I wasn't exactly familiar with some of the more specific aspects of Cap's history, for example when Steve Rogers had his disagreement with the U.S. government and became just The Captain. However each issue provided interesting glimpses into Cap's publication history and gave me a better understanding of the character's development over the years.

Overall I would recommend this book for Captain America fans. Characters like Iron Man, Nick Furey, and Thor are prominent guest-stars, but they're really not the focus of the story. I felt like this really was a story about Steve Rogers and his quest to defeat Hydra more than anything else. But for any fan of Captain America this is a great look at Cap's history and an excellent story with plenty of zombie-smashing action. Definitely a must-read for Captain America fans of all ages. (Well, above fourteen at least. There's some pretty serious stuff in there.)

'Comics: Men in Tights' feature piece + giveaway!

Don't you just LOVE a man that can pull off a nice set of skin-sucking tights? Swinging from the highest buildings has never looked so amazing; it's enough to make any ladies heart beat faster. You could tangle me in his web any day you please.

Magneto- Bad never looked sooo good and this tall drink of hunky German metal could seduce me to the darker side of life with open and willing arms. Red's the color of POWER and this human hater's got it going on. Talk about getting chained to the bed: chain me!

Captain America- Steve Rogers has the surfer boy good looks and a tall frame to carry all that man-cake goodness bringing it home to the good'ole US of A with his rock solid body and sexy shield. Action, power and tights. Let's hear it for the red what and blue. USA! USA! (sorry, had a sugar rush for a second there)

Gambit- Going down the bayou. This Ragin' Cajun beauty's one 6 foot tall drink of sweet tea, what do the cards say? Walking close to the edge this smex pot is just exuding "bad boy come get some". Bikers beware you can have your leather I'll take skin tight purple and be on my way!

Punisher- Frank Castle may have a long criminal record, but I'd be the first to holler out my window if I saw him doing weekend work on the side of a freeway. *makes cat calls* Welcome to NY baby, this 6'1 man is one hot apple weighting in at 200lbs of pure beef cake. Black never looked so good. I'm ready to take a bite out of crime.

Thor- Swing that hammer baby! This 6'6 Norse god of thunder and lighting packs a punch and I'm not just talking about the battle field here folks. With all the allure of Asgard and long luxurious locks on blond hair this silver-clad hottie with the naughty body can cook my goose.

[No Marvel Superheros were harmed while testing the beef cake validity of my claims. However Ben did have to wash his brain while editing. Repeatedly.]

Captain America: The First Avenger

Hokay, so I'm not exactly an expert on comic books. "But Kalpar!" you exclaim, "Don't you review comic books on this very site?" Well, yes, but only because Katie is too distracted by the smut books she reads. As you probably notice I generally do big thick books that only the insane read. That said, it doesn't mean I'm completely ignorant of comics. I know a handful of things, sort of like how I know a handful of things about France. So it's not that I go in a huge fan of Captain America because I've been reading about him for forever. I'm a huge fan because of the ideals he stands for. So I was kind of super-excited going into this movie.

Like most superhero films, this movie is an origin story. We follow the story of how Steve Rogers, a scrawny sickly boy from the streets of Brooklyn, became the brawny super-soldier Captain America. The year is 1942, America has joined World War II and needs men for the armed services. Steve Rogers attempts to enlist five times, but it disqualified every time because of his extremely poor physical health. Steve's determination brings him to the attention of Dr. Abraham Erskine, a defector from Germany developing a serum to create super-soldiers. Despite the misgivings of project leaders, Steve proves himself not by his physical strength, but by the strength of his heart and morals. However, Dr. Erskine is assassinated shortly after Steve is transformed and all remaining vials of the serum are lost. The super-soldier program is written off as a loss and Steve spends the next year with the USO as part of a traveling act to sell war bonds and stamps. Although he's helping the war effort at home, Steve is frustrated that he still isn't in the fight.

Steve's big chance comes when he entertains some troops on the front lines in Italy. Learning that his good friend Bucky is assumed captured by the nefarious Nazi weapons group Hydra, Steve launches a one-man assault on the Hydra fortress, rescuing numerous allied prisoners. Finally proven as Captain America, Steve and his team work to take down the numerous Hydra bases and help the Allies win the war.

Overall, I really liked this film. Part of that is probably because I like the idea of Captain America and I'm glad this movie turned out as well as it did. Sure it's another World War II story, but it feels earnest somehow. The real gems in this film are the witty one-liners delivered by nearly all the characters. Cap also gets a more updated and, some might say, realistic look to his equipment which I frankly kind of like. Pretty much an enjoyable film.

I do have some issues with the movie, though. As I mentioned, Steve spends a good amount of time with the USO helping with the war effort back home. Yeah, it was important work back during the war, but that's not what I want to see Captain America doing. He doesn't need to be surrounded by dancing girls. He needs to be punching Nazis! When the Nazi-punching finally does start, I was pretty satisfied but it doesn't happen until over halfway through the movie. Just a heads up on that. I was also disappointed that the men who form Captain America's elite team, like the British SAS guy and the Bowler Cowboy are just kind of there. Seriously, I have to call them that because they didn't even toss in names. I really wanted to see more than just a montage of Captain America and his team taking down Hydra.

I also want to say that the romance plot was really awkward and felt shoehorned into this movie. "But Kalpar!" you're probably exclaiming for the second time this review, "You are a well-known hater of romance plots! How can we expect you to give a fair assessment of the situation?" Well, this may be true, but I have a good argument for this. In a two and a half hour film, the romance plot is given...ten, maybe fifteen minutes. It's like the potential relationship between Captain America and Agent Carter was an afterthought. It's weak, undeveloped and contrived leaving the romance plot feel like it was shoehorned into the movie.

Despite my relatively minor issues, the movie overall is good. Definitely worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of the Captain and what he stands for: The Dream. Four sheep.
