Eve Langlais' Top 10 Sci-Fi Heroes (Pirate book tour) + giveaway

I will admit, I love science fiction. The idea of life out there, strange new worlds, cultures, everything, totally gets me excited. The whole 'what if' premise is one of the reasons I love writing sci-fi romance. My passion for all things sci-fi started at a young age as I avidly watched Star Trek. Then along came Star Wars, and the various Star Trek rebirths. Battlestar Galactica, Guardians of the Galaxy, Stargate, and more... If it's got an alien, or futuristic theme (especially with cyborgs or gene manipulation) then chances are I'll watch it.

Over the years, some characters have left lasting impressions and helped formed my idea of the ultimate sci-fi hero. Here's my favorites. Who's yours?

My hottest heroes from Sci-Fi movies and shows.
1. The original Han Solo, Harrison Ford
2. Riddick played by hottie Vin Diesel
3. Jean Luc Picard with commanding actor Patrick Stewart
4. Star Lord of Guardians of the Galaxy played by the adorable Chris Pratt
5. Star Trek rebooted with Chris Pine as the young Captain Kirk
6. The cyborg in Almost human, Michael Ealy
7. Number 6/Caprica from Battlestar Galactica, Tricia Helfer (She was awesome!)
8. Villain Benedict Cumberbath as Kahn in Star trek into Darkness.
9. Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis (I hear he’s going to be Aquaman!)
10. Channing Tatum was yummy as the guard in Jupiter Ascending.

Book Reviews: Welcome to Hell Series (books 1-4 by Eve Langlais

Adria reviews all four of the Welcome to Hell series by Eve Langlais

I had quite a task on my hands: Read and do mini reviews of the first 4 books in Eve Langlais’ Welcome to Hell series as well as a full length review for her latest release in the series, Hell’s Kitty. I’d never read Langlais’ work before so I braced myself for whatever would come.

Apparently, I didn't quite prepare for the entire experience.

A Demon and His Witch (Welcome to Hell #1)
Burning alive is nothing compared to the heat of his touch.

There are better ways to break up with a girl than having her roasted at the stake as a witch. Is it any wonder Ysabel has trust issues? She got her revenge, though, and it only cost her a slightly tarnished soul.

Working for Lucifer isn’t all bad, until her ex-boyfriend escapes the bowels of Hell and she’s forced to team up with a womanizing demon to fetch the jerk back.

As a minion in Lucifer’s legion, Remy’s seen a lot of things, but nothing can prepare him for the witch with the acerbic tongue – and voluptuous figure. The more she pushes him away, the more determined he becomes to seduce her. However, what’s a poor demon to do when he accidentally falls in love and wants to keep her forever?

Warning: This story contains a sexy demon with corny pickup lines and a sassy witch who works for Satan. There is coarse language, hot scenes, a twisted version of Hell and a whole lot of giggles. If you possess an open mind, a good sense of humor and a tainted soul, then read at your own peril.

Burned for being a witch, Ysabel sold her soul to the devil in exchange for revenge on those responsible for her death, including her lover. Now, hundreds of years later, those responsible have escaped hell and Ysabel must team up with an arrogant demon named Remy to hunt them down and return them to Lucifer.

Remy is one of the best guards in hell, he’s seen and done many things, most of which he’s proud of, but for the life of him he can’t seem to impress, let alone seduce Ysabel. The more time he spends with her, the more he realizes that he wants more than just a onetime fling. Convincing Ysabel however, is going to be the fight of his life.

A Demon and His Witch had me laughing out loud (unattractive snorting laughs included) from the first chapter and it didn’t stop until I finished the last page!

The hero Remy should have been annoying and unlikable. He’s so dang arrogant about his ability to score with any woman that you just want to haul off and punch him in the nose. Or in Ysabel’s case, the balls. That pretty much sets the tone for these two in the first half of the book which for me, was a blast to read. I love a heroine who can give the hero hell in more ways than one. Of course, a hate-hate relationship is the perfect grounds for explosive chemistry and Langlais didn’t disappoint with Remy and Ysabel. There’s such an attraction there yet neither one is ready to let down their guard and stop trading insults.

My only problem with A Demon and His Witch was the quick conclusion. The story built up this understanding of an epic showdown between Ysabel and Fransisco but there wasn’t one. It was just a quick exchange of insults between him and Remy and then poof! He got sent back to hell. I would have liked to have seen some kind of fight scene with him and Ysabel. Other than that, this was a really fun read.

Sheep Rating: 4 ½ sheep

A Demon and His Psycho (Welcome to Hell #2)
With a giggle and an outrageous mouth – perfect for things other than talking – Katie comes flying into Xaphan’s life, upsetting centuries of self-inflicted misery. How can he stay true to the one he lost when a bubbly psycho, with mismatched eyes, keeps consuming his thoughts – and awakening his desire?

So she was a tad bit nuts, Katie’s insanity came in handy as the Devil’s favorite problem solver. But killing’s not on the menu when a dragon goes missing, and worse, Lucifer teams her up with Hell’s grumpiest demon. His rejection of her advances only makes her more determined to seduce him. And despite her violent reputation, a part of her is oddly tempted to let him live.

The Welcome to Hell series (is best read in order for full enjoyment of Lucifer and his ongoing matchmaking attempts)

A psychotic killer as a heroine huh?

That and a bit of an eyebrow lift was my reaction when I started this book. I thought I’d read every kind of main character, but apparently I was wrong.

Matchmaking Lucifer is at it again, this time he’s paired his most serious warrior Xaphan with the psychotic Katie in hopes that they’ll be able to find a missing dragon. Of course, he doesn’t mention to the pair that he hopes they’ll do a lot more than just find the dragon.

I liked Katie’s instability, strange but true. She kept the story from becoming predictable. Whenever Katie would cross paths with another character, I wasn’t sure if she would talk to them or slaughter them. It was hard to find fault in her “love ‘em then kill ‘em” logic given her past and I found her oddly endearing.

Quite the opposite, Xaphan is an honorable demon who’s ill made promise to a woman has turned him into a sour creature that rarely (if ever) smiles, let alone lets his guard down to have some fun. I could definitely see why Lucifer paired him with Katie. I mean, the entertainment factor alone is reason enough. Xaphan is fierce and protective and Katie just doesn’t care if she pushes someone too far, she’ll just kill them. Or try.

A Demon and His Psycho was a bloody, sexy good time. There are plenty of laughs to be had and Katie, though crazy enough to kill anyone who looks at her wrong, is a fun character who brought out the best in Xaphan and is so far the only character who truly doesn’t mind ticking Lucifer off. Though I do have to mention that once again, the conclusion is rather rushed and an appearance from a person in Xaphan’s past seems almost an afterthought. In fact, I don’t know why Langlais put that character in, since they didn’t provide anything other than another body to count.

Sheep Rating: 4 sheep

A Demon and Her Scot (Welcome to Hell #3)
“Fetch me a Scot,” Lucifer commands. Sounds simple, except the skirt-wearing jerk won’t cooperate. But Aella isn’t one to give up. Willing or not, she delivers her target to the Lord of Sin. In retaliation, the much-too-sexy Scot has Aella assigned as his bodyguard for the golfing match from Hell. One shot ruined Niall’s life. A second shot could help him regain it. Niall sold his soul once to win a lady’s heart only to end up betrayed. Does he dare take a risk and give love a second chance?Lucifer needs to improve his golf game in time to compete in the highly anticipated, once in a century golf game so he sends one of his favorite minions to bring in a Scottish vampire known for his amazing golf skills. Being the Lord of Sin has its perks, and if the two stubborn creatures happen to fall in love, well then that’s a bonus for Lucifer.

Okay this one is definitely my favorite in the series! First of all, I love me a Scotsman and second, I love a heroine who has gone through hell but came out of it as a snarky, take no prisoners warrior. Matching Niall and Aella together was sheer genius on Eve Langlais’ part because the sparks (and body parts) went flying the second they set eyes on each other. It was hate at first sight laced with sexual innuendo and witty comebacks. My favorite kind of chemistry! When I wasn’t laughing out loud, I was fanning myself because man did those two burn up my e-reader!

The plot was fun and I thought that the idea of Lucifer taking golfing lessons from a stubborn golfing vampire was pretty entertaining. Lucifer is hilarious, a mix of evil leader, horny teenager and petulant child that doesn’t like to be wrong in anything. A Demon and Her Scot was a quick read with very likable characters, incredible chemistry, entertaining dialogue and one very funny golf match.

Hell's Kitty (Welcome to Hell #4)
Good thing this Hellcat has nine lives because he’s going to need them if he’s going to survive Lucifer’s latest scheme and land on his four furry feet.

Okay, so Felipe ate a few of the Styx sea creatures. In his defense, they were awfully tasty. Depleting the monster reservoir didn’t mean Lucifer had to go all Lord of Hell on him and order him to go on a stupid mission. And to Siren Isle of all places! Everyone knows males should stay far, far away from that dangerous place. The only stroke of luck is the woman he’s after isn’t a siren. Nor is she quite a mermaid. As a matter of fact, Jenny isn’t like anyone he’s ever met—so, of course, this curious cat wants her.

Except he’s not the only one.

Not long after his arrival, he runs into problems, which he’s only too happy to solve in a permanent and violent fashion. Getting Jenny off the island and back to Hell’s inner circle is proving more troublesome than expected, though. Who knew a simple retrieval mission would signal the start of a dangerous—yet exhilarating—adventure, and despite his tomcat ways, this purring feline can’t help but fall in love.

Hell’s Kitty was a little slow for me, at least in the beginning. Whereas the preceding books started off with a bang (usually on the heroine’s part), this book took quite a while to warm up. Jenny was almost the total opposite of the heroines that I thoroughly enjoyed before.

Jenny was too shy, too hesitant for my tastes, especially given that she grew up among sirens that aren’t known for being wilting flowers. With Filipe as the hero, I thought Jenny wasn’t much of a match for him until later on when she became more aggressive and outgoing. I did love her “ability” though. She’s like a reverse siren; instead of lulling men into compliancy she tends to kill anything that hears her voice. Poor thing!

Felipe cracked me up. He first appeared in A Demon and His Witch as the heroine’s pet hellcat. Who knew he had such a complex? He thinks he’s Lucifer’s gift to women and has no intention of settling down which makes his attraction to Jenny even more amusing. Especially when the reason why he isn’t affected by Jenny’s voice is revealed. So much for a perfect man!

Felipe and Jenny’s chemistry takes a while to show, there’s attraction of course but the heat is one sided for a good part of the beginning, Jenny being hesitant to act on any attraction. However, once she decided she wanted Felipe then I started to feel like Hell’s Kitty was an Eve Langlais book.

I’ve come to look forward to the snarky banter between characters that seems to be a given in this series and while there was some back and forth with Felipe and Jenny, it wasn’t as prominent or entertaining as earlier books. Still, Hell’s Kitty was an entertaining read and I looked forward to Lucifer and Gaia’s scenes as well as the bit of mystery that’s introduced at the end.

I’m still a fan of this series, and I really can’t wait to see what the author has in store for the next set of characters.

A Quickie with Eve Langlais (interview that is) Kodiak's Claim Book Tour

The funny Eve Langlais has stopped by for a quickie ...interview that is! (Gutter wallowing sheep<G>). So check out what she has to say and what these videos have to do with it! Pick your poison and rock out while you read.

Sharon: Where do you do your best thinking and plotting?
Eve: There are two places that usually help when I'm stuck in a story or trying to figure out where to go next; in the shower, lol, or when I go for a drive with hubby. The drive especially, usually with a mocha coffee in hand, is really good for me as it relaxes me, and I use my hubby as a sounding board, reciting my current storyline out loud. For some reason orating it like this to an audience and trying to make hubby understand what's going on helps me to clarify the current story arc and where it's going.

Sharon: Best piece of writing advice someone gave you?
Eve: Write. Don't get hung up on revising and editing in an endless loop. An author never thinks they're story is good enough. Sometimes you just have to let go, send it to your editor and move on to the next story.

Sharon: What book are you embarrassed to say you’ve never read?
EveFifty Shades of Grey. It seems everyone has read it, and people who hear I'm a romance writer always ask me what I think.

Sharon: Which fictional or non-fictional character would like to have your back during the apocalypse?
EveMy husband. He'd totally kick some serious ass. :D

Sharon: If every time you entered a room theme music or a song played, what would it be?
EveOMG, I've never been asked that before. I think it would depend if I was in a certain book mode. When I'm immersed in my cyborg world, I love Styx, Mr Roboto. When in an alien mood, Katy Perry's ET. But honestly, if I'm just hanging with readers/authors and having a good time, probably Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

Eve is visiting the flock today and sharing her bucket list with us! Then check out book one in her Welcome to Hell series, A Demon and His Witch.

Bucket List

1. Go to a place with white sandy beaches and sink my toes in it.

2. Fly first class in one of those big comfy seats.

3. Swim in a warm ocean - while peering around anxiously for sharks.

4. Eat at a real sushi type restaurant where the chef prepares the food in front of me and freaks me out.

5. Visit Australia and New Zealand just because I love 'em.

6. Walk through some real old ruins - Mayan, Inca, Stonehenge, a crumbly castle. The inspiration... :)

7. See the first colonists settle on Mars - which isn't something I'd do lol, but want to see.

8. Stay at a swanky hotel in a penthouse suite.

9. Strip naked, put on the complimentary robe and run around the penthouse suite screaming "OMG! I can't believe I'm staying in a penthouse suite."

10. See one of my alien or cyborg books hit number one on the New York Times - I would totally laugh my ass off if that ever happened.

Have you done anything on Eve's bucket list?

Excerpt (18+):

Lucifer lined up his shot and gave a few practice swings with his number nine thigh bone. The shrunken skull waited for him to putt. He pulled back and –

“I demand you castrate him!”

– his shot went wild, careening off the pillars and missing his interior putting green entirely. Sighing, he turned and faced Ysabel, who, as usual, appeared annoyed.

“What has he done this time?” he asked as she flopped into a chair.

“He kissed me.”

He’d always known Remy was braver than most. “The horror. The shame. And?”

“What do you mean, and? I didn’t want him to.”

“So tell him no.”

“I did. Kind of.” He stared at her. She sighed. “Fine, I kissed him back. But I didn’t want to. He made me do it.”

Lucifer blinked. Stuck a finger in his ear and wiggled it. Surely he misunderstood. “He made you do it? I’m sorry, did I suddenly enter an alternate universe? Since when does anyone make you do anything? I’ve been trying to get you to show up on time for five hundred years and you still insist on making your own hours.”

A smirk graced her face. “I do it to keep you on your toes. But, back to the kissing demon. I want to know how to stop him from using his magic or potion or whatever it was he used to make me like it.”

Now this was interesting. “You’re mad because you enjoyed it?”

“Loved it, actually,” Remy announced, striding in unannounced. It seemed his witch’s bad habits were rubbing off.

“Does no one knock anymore?” But they weren’t paying Lucifer any attention as they faced off.

“I did not like it.”

“Liar. The tongue in my mouth said otherwise.”

“I was pushing yours out.”

“Then what were the moans of pleasure?”

“I did not moan.”

“Mmm. Mmm.” Remy closed his eyes and adopted a blissful expression with puckered lips.

It occurred to Lucifer as Ysabel raised her fingers that he might want to take cover.

“I am going to turn you into an imp,” she threatened.

“Touch me in a non-erotic way and I am telling you right now, I will consider it foreplay, and not only will I kiss you again, I will strip every piece of clothing from you, lick you from head to toe, and make you scream my name, not once, not twice, but three times as you come.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” she huffed, her eyes flashing with ire – and more intriguing to Lucifer, interest.

Before they could cause any damage, to his office at any rate, Lucifer snapped his fingers and froze them. He didn’t really care what they did to each other, but he’d spent several months in the wild capturing the beast he’d turned into a desk.

“Children, children,” he said tucking his hands behind his back and adopting his father figure mode. It usually made his daughter, Muriel, laugh. “Must I remind you that I tasked you with a mission. One that I might add, Ysabel, you should be most eager to complete. What I do not need, is for you to FUCK IT UP!” He let his voice increase in treble until it boomed. “I’ve been more than tolerant, but enough is enough. You will cease bringing me your petty squabbles. You will do the job I assigned. And if you don’t want his tongue in your mouth, Ysabel, then bite it off. Although, really, if you enjoyed it so much, I don’t see what the problem is. Maybe he can help you remove the stick up your ass if you let him kiss the other end. Now, if we’re done here, and since I’m boss, and I say we are, leave and don’t come back until you’re done, because if you do, I’m duct taping the pair of you together and throwing you in a dark room until you learn to get along. Or fuck. I don’t really care which, but I prefer the latter so I can watch.”

A snap of his fingers, and the glaring pair, stalked off, silent for the moment, but he’d wager it would only last until they hit the hall.

And right on cue…

“I’ve never seen a stick up a butt before. Wanna bend over and show me?” Whack. “Ow, that was totally uncalled for.”

Unlike the last time she cried for help, someone answered her call. She managed to stumble in retreat only moments before the door swung open. A tall dark figure bathed in shadows filled the doorway.

Who stood there?

The first thing she noticed was the red eyes. Glowing eyes. She moaned a fearful, “Roderick.”

The menacing shape took a step into the cell and terror melted as she beheld the vampire’s face. Not Roderick, and yet, something about him, something about his presence, his aura, was darkly familiar. The chiseled features of her abductor were anything but evil, though, and she couldn’t help a spurt of happiness he’d answered her call. Her vampire savior back again to the rescue, or her new jailor?

“Don’t fear. It’s me, Thaddeus.”

An interesting name, old fashioned and yet it suited him. “Why am I here? Why have you brought me back? Marc said he burned this place down, how is this possible?”

He arched a brow. “Me? I did nothing. I’ve never visited this dismal location before. I’m afraid this setting is of your doing. You drew me into your dream.”

“So this isn’t real?” He inclined his head, and she heaved a sigh of relief. “Thank God. Once I escaped, I prayed I’d never have to go back.”

“Neither prayer nor God has anything to do with it. My understanding is your will kept you alive until the wolf released you.”

“But who led him to me in the first place?” she sassed back. Look at her, arguing theology with a vampire.

Thaddeus laughed. “A question scholars could debate for centuries and never come to an agreement.”

“Whatever the reason, I’m glad I escaped.”

“As am I.”

“I find that hard to believe. Why would you care?”

Thaddeus stepped further into the cell, a frown knitting his brow as he glanced around the miserable room. “What Roderick did to you was vile, even by vampire standards.”

“How would you know? I haven’t told you anything.” And didn’t plan to. That part of her life was best left in the past, locked away and forgotten.

“You might not have said anything, but I’ve seen glimpses of it in your mind, and from the memories I’ve ingested.”

“Double whoa. What do you mean by seen it and ingested?”

He turned his attention from the cold stone blocks and focused his gaze on her. “Because you were once in thrall to Roderick, your mind is similar to an open book, easy to read for those of us with the power to do so.”

She grimaced. “Great. Nothing like having your worst moments on display.”

“Your secrets are safe with me.”
“I’d prefer you not have them at all. Isn’t there a way of closing the journal of my life?” Before Thaddeus got to the part where she found him attractive. Don’t think of it. Quick, hide that thought. She shoved it behind a door in her mind and locked it. “Isn’t there a mind trick I can learn to prevent you from reading it?”

“I’m afraid the only way you could close yourself off, at least to others, would be to become a thrall once again.”

Not the answer she’d hoped for. Her lips twisted into a moue of displeasure. “You mean become a slave to a vampire.”

“Not all of us treat humans with disdain, some are cherished companions. Friends. Even lovers.” He flashed a seductive smile, one that shot a sizzling heat to her lower belly and curled her toes.

This guy is so dangerous. And sexy. She tried to keep her mind on asking questions, which in retrospect seemed dumb. If she was dreaming, then his answers meant nothing, but it didn’t stop her from having an imaginary conversation. “You said something about ingesting memories. I assume you mean Roderick’s? How and why would you do that?”

“The how is not important, as to the why, simple. With his memories, even if I don’t agree, I can at least understand his actions, and find those he’s weakened.”

“Why would you want to find them? I assure you the asshats he controlled are not worth the effort.” Except for maybe Marc. Unlike the leering and creepy guys who hung around Roderick, Marc seemed to have a decent core.

“They might not be the most preferable of companions, however, they must be located, because if they aren’t, they will either all die or become slaves to those less benign than I.”

There was that dreaded fear again. Like a ball of burning acid, it hurt her chest. “A slave to someone as bad as Roderick?”

“I daresay worse. Roderick might have used you as a peon in his quest to build an army loyal only to him. But my less-compassionate brethren would use you for sick games and torture, and to start a war.”

It hit her in a moment of clarity. “But they wouldn’t go near me if I belonged to you.”

“You think me strong enough to protect you?” His lips curved in a mocking grin.

“Aren’t you?”

Thaddeus laughed. “Yes. But, the better question is, are you asking me to make you mine? To tie your life to mine until we die? Somehow, I think your wolf might object to that.”

“He does.” The growled reply preceded Marc’s entrance into the cell.

Why did it not surprise her that Marc would also make an appearance in her dream?

She tried to articulate her reasoning. “If I let Thaddeus claim me, then the other vampires can’t touch me.”

“We barely know the guy and you’d let him bite you?”

“I barely know you and yet you expect me to mate with you.”

“To protect you.”

“Just like I would protect her,” Thaddeus added. “I actually think it is a brilliant plan. Albeit, without the wolf. Personally, she could probably survive quite well with just me as her guardian.”

“Dream on, bloodsucker.” Marc took an aggressive step forward, but before things could escalate, she stepped between them.

“Both of you, stop it. This is a dream. My dream. And that means I’m the one who gets to decide what happens.”

“Really?” Thaddeus tossed a wicked smile her way. “Then I should be glad your dream has decided I should kiss you.”

“No, it hasn’t—” The rest of her rebuttal was swallowed by lips as Thaddeus, in a blur, closed the gap between them and enveloped her in his arms—and blew all her senses.

Where Marc’s kiss was a soft, sensual exploration, Thaddeus undertook a forceful exploration of her mouth. He didn’t just conquer her lips, he plundered them.

Where Marc’s kiss woke the wolf within her and drew forth a savage need to claim and give as good as she got, Thaddeus evoked a darker sensuality, one that made her want to let him have his way. To have him take charge.

Each different in their style of embrace, yet she couldn’t have said which she preferred more. But apparently, they expected her to choose. She found herself spun from the arms of Thaddeus into those of Marc, who feathered kisses across her cheeks and down her neck, each spot he touched, tingling with awareness. If wolves could purr, she would have, instead she contented herself with gasps and tiny moans of enjoyment.

A blurring motion and she was back in Thaddeus’s grasp, his fingers digging into her hips as his tongue invaded her mouth, sliding along hers and causing her to shudder as her arousal rose in pitch.

Not to be outdone, Marc pressed against her back, his soft lips nipping at her nape. Thaddeus sucked on her tongue. Marc blew against the shell of her ear. Their bodies went from clothed to nude in her dream, the heat and hardness of their erections pressing against her, front and back. With her eyes close, she distinguished them by the touch of their hands, the feel of their bodies and the style of their kiss.

Her body heated. Her arousal spiraled and she panted. Dream or not, she wanted them, wanted them both. And here, where nothing was truly real, she could do it. Have her vampire lover and the werewolf, too, with no one the wiser. She moaned her assent, and their hands tore at her garments, touching her bare skin and…
