Story Behind the Story: Heir to the Underworld: The New Gods of Olympus, Book 1 by JB Dennis

Like most of my generation, Disney’s animated movies played a large role in our formative years. They gave us brave heroes to admire, catchy songs to sing, witty lines to laugh at, and (at least for me) acted as our electronic babysitters. We were, for good or ill, molded by our love for Disney. In fact, it’s because of a Disney movie that you are reading this post.

Before 2002 my favorite Disney movie was Aladdin, thanks in no small part to the talents of the late Robin Williams. However, I, unfortunately, wasn't lucky enough to have that movie in my possession. So, instead of watching Aladdin on rewind, I had to settle for my second favorite movie at the time, Hercules. It was funny, clever, and dripping with personality. I consider it one of Disney’s best. I mention this because I want you to be left in no doubt that I truly do love this movie. However, DISNEY GOT IT WRONG!

A natural part of growing up is the shattering of certain childhood illusions. Storks don’t deliver babies to expectant parents, rainbows don’t lead to pots of gold, and Santa Claus doesn't deliver presents all around the world. That's Amazon's job. This simple fact of life is no less true when it comes to Disney movies. I can't exactly blame them for a more childish interpretation of Greek mythology. The myths surround Zeus and Hera alone are enough to give children nightmares for months. And yet, I still have a problem, a major sticking point of contention, if you will. My problem is Hades.

Sure, Hades made a great villain. He was funny, fast-talking, temperamental, and sleazy. The perfect combination of traits to engage the masses of juvenile minds under the, somewhat monopolistic, sway of Disney Animation. Eventually, however, those minds grow up and they find Wikipedia. In true Greek mythology, Hades was not a villain. True, some saw him as such because of his association with the dead but every myth regarding the god of the Underworld showed him to be a gracious host, a loving husband, and a fair ruler (at least, as fair as a Greek god could be). And yet, despite the fact that Hades was one of the better gods, he is often characterized as petty, spiteful, jealous, and (in some case) evil. In fact, I can count on one hand the number of versions of Hades I’ve seen in which he is portrayed in a positive light and still have several fingers left over. Enough is enough. It’s time to put down another finger.

Of course, my burning desire to give Hades his day is not the only thing I cover in my book. Heir to the Underworld has a diverse cast of 14 main characters across several different nationalities, sexualities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Yes, you read that right, 14. And to answer your next question, “Yes, I know I’m insane.” So, if you are interested in a character-driven story about Greek mythology, I invite you to give me a chance. Also, I got Hades right. And, if you disagree with me on that fact, then, in the vernacular of today's youth, "Fight me!"

Five Words to Describe Hunger (Goddesses of Delphi Book 4) by Gemma Brocato + giveaway

Five Words to Describe Hunger (Goddesses of Delphi Book 4)

Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog to celebrate the release of Hunger. What I decided to share with your readers are five words that I think describe the book. In no particular order, they are:

Suspenseful:
In this book and series, I tried to infuse a sense of urgency. Sure, there are nine Muses, and each will get her story, so keeping the suspense from book to book is key to making the series work. And coming up with a situation that differs from Muse to Muse can be a challenge. In Hunger, it is the first time the mortal destined to help the Muse conquer the challenge is handpicked by the man staging a hostile take-over of Olympus. Throughout the book, Lia Thanos worries that the attraction between her and Ben is manufactured and in the end, she might not end up with the man.

Funny:
Lia is the Muse of Comedy. Putting her in a dire situation let me throw in a lot more comic relief than I could with the other Muses. There’s a scene in the book where the discussion turns to vampires. I laugh each time I’ve reread those lines.

Camaraderie:
As each new mortal man is brought into play, the mortals who have preceded him in helping a Muse stands shoulder to shoulder with the new guy, helping him understand the way of the Muses and educating the new kid to the brotherhood about what to expect, how to act, et cetera. I love that Ben finds new friends to stand with.

Heartrending:
I never meant the book to make me cry. It’s about the Muse of Comedy after all. But I managed it. I put Lia through the wringer in her challenge and her decisions to keep Ben safe. I don’t want to spoil it, but in this story, the villain, Pierus, is really awful.

Uplifting:
I’ve always been intrigued by gods and goddesses. Were they good? Were they bad? For my books, I chose to make them truly care about the wellbeing of mortals. They’re immortals, they can have anything. But what they desire, above everything else, is for humans to be happy, even if they no longer believe in the gods of myths.

Lia Thanos, Muse of Comedy, has joked her way through hundreds of lifetimes. But the past few months have been no laughing matter. She and her sisters have been locked in a battle to save Olympus from a hostile takeover. Now, the god challenging them has upped his game and personally selected the mortal man destined to help Lia win.

Botanist Ben Jordan has his hands full; running a farmer’s market, helping his hearing-impaired sister, and trying to figure out why crops around the world are failing. If the trend can’t be reversed, humans will starve and chaos will destroy the world. The only good news is the long-time famine he’s faced in his love life came to an end when he met Lia.
Despite the fact that Ben finds it hard to believe immortal gods exist, he accepts the challenge to help Lia, a woman he yearns to spend the rest of his life with. But Pierus and his daughter, Hunger, will stop at nothing to keep the two apart.

Excerpt:
“Will you please tell me what’s going on?” Ben’s earlier calm evaporated as Mnemosyne chanted in a language he didn’t understand.

“I will. I know we only just met, but Pierus has deemed you my partner in this challenge. It’s going to require you to suspend disbelief and trust me.”

“A lady just materialized out of thin air and I haven’t even once considered myself crazy.”

“There is that. Will you come with me?” Lia moved toward a door to the left of the stage.

With one last look at his statue-like friends, Ben followed.

Lia’s hips swung side-to-side as she preceded him down a hallway lit by florescent lights. Even as fucked up as reality seemed at the moment, he still noticed the seductive sway. Barely curbing the urge to increase his speed so he could grab her ass, he shook his head.

Maybe he was certifiable.

She opened a door on the right side of the corridor and slipped inside.

He followed, closed the door, and then leaned against it. “I’m waiting.”

“You already know my name is Thalia. What you don’t know is that I’m immortal. I’m the Muse of Comedy and Agriculture. And mortals—the entire human race—are under siege. You just don’t know it yet.”

“Bullshit!” he scoffed.

“Wish I could say it was. That it’s just a huge prank that is part of the comedy club’s regularly scheduled entertainment.” She took up a position behind her desk, resting her palms on the dark wood. “But this is deadly serious. My sisters are Muses as well and we are in a supernatural fight for the safety of all mortal kind.”

As she sat in the chair behind her, the look on her face was earnest, brows raised, eyes wide. She believed her own psychosis. He searched his memory for anything he might have read about how to deal with delusional behavior. He had nothing other than recollected warnings about not encouraging that kind of behavior, and maintaining a distance in case of possible violent outbursts.

He took a step toward the desk, and then another, shaking his head as he did. This was no way to establish distance between them. He took another step and closed the gap, until the only thing between them was a block of wood. Not a very good barrier, considering the way she’d leaped over the bar when Paul had been going schizoid.

“I suppose next you’ll tell me Zeus is real and is your dad.”

She nodded solemnly. “And Gaia is my mother. Although she isn’t a god. She’s a primordial deity.”

He didn’t bother to restrain his snort. He had to be dreaming.

“I’m happy to pinch you if you think it would help. But I get to pick where I pinch.” Lia dropped her gaze to his ass, then lifted her eyes and offered with a bright smile. She gestured to a straight-backed chair.

Ben sat down hard enough to bite his tongue. Thanks to the pain he experienced, he knew he wasn’t dreaming. “Okay, I’m willing to go on a little faith here. Maybe you should start at the top.”

“In my first or second incarnation, a deity named Pierus challenged Zeus, claiming his nine daughters were superior to the Muses. While my sisters and I inspire the world to good things, Pierus and his offspring represent all the bad juju out in the world. His bitches come with names like Greed, Strife, Doom, Disease…you get the idea. It appears my challenge might be with Hunger.” She stood to pace behind her desk. “Zeus got pissed at Pierus, and transformed his children into magpies for all eternity. But the evil bastard still manages to rise up every thousand years or so to challenge us.”

Thousands of years? “How old are you?”

“Twenty-four.” She moved around the desk and leaned her hip on the edge. “In this lifetime. If you counted up the entire number of years I’ve been alive, my age is closer to six-thousand and twenty-four. No wait. Is it eight-thousand? I’ve sucked at math in every lifetime.”

Okay, that little fact freaked him the fuck out. Unable to deal with it, he filed the detail for exploration later. “Tell me more about this challenge.”

“Okay, but you have to know, until recently, no mortals in this millennia ever knew of our existence. Only three other men even have a clue at this point. You’re kind of a rare breed.”

She propped a hand on her hip, pulling her T-shirt taut over her breasts. Ben dropped his gaze to the luscious display and swallowed hard to move past the need to cup his palms around them.

Lia cleared her throat. “Um, just for now, eyes up. But this attraction you feel might be part of the challenge.”

“Don’t you feel it?”

“The connection? Yeah. When you touched my wrist, I had a premonition that we are meant to be together.”

“You too? I saw us in a darkened room with…I don’t know, maybe crows flying around us.”

She tipped her head to the side and pressed a finger to her lips. “That’s new. I’ve never shared foresight with anyone before. One more nail in your coffin.” She winked at him, followed the motion with a chuckle.

Her quiet laugh swirled through him, twisting like an auger along his body. Everything from his waist down drew tight, went hard. However, his brain heard coffin. “I’m not going to die thanks to this challenge, am I?”

“You won’t. Not if we beat Pierus. Unfortunately, we have to play to win.” Lia hopped up on the desk, swinging her legs. She held up her hand, closed her eyes and lifted her face. Almost like she was speaking to someone in her mind.

Ben studied her casual posture, her easy confidence. For a six-or-eight-thousand and something year-old, she was dead sexy. Oh, Lord. What was he thinking? Or better, which head was he thinking with? Even if his attraction to her was a result of his unknowing involvement in this challenge, he didn’t mind giving in to it.

LaVerne Thompson guest post: To Series or Not (Zeus: Lost Gods Book Tour) + excerpt + giveaway

To Series or Not

I made the mistake one day of mentioning to an author friend the premise of a story I’d started writing. She loved the idea, but when I told her it would be a stand alone, well she didn’t like the sound of that. Lol She said, "Friends don't let friends write stand alones."

Thus, Lost God became Lost Gods, a series based on my twist of Greek Mythology and it takes place over the course of 3 stories that cover some of the same time frames. The first book is Ze's story and his story is threaded through out all 3 books even though they each feature a different couple. Ze is the reincarnation of the Greek god Zeus, his name is also Zeus but he prefers Ze. He has no memories of his past life and the powers he can wield. He has to regain what he’s lost in order to stand against his father Cronus, the god of chaos and destruction for the last time. Cronus is trying to escape his prison, Tartarus and Ze and his friends have to stop him. Along the way they all find love.

The second story in the series is Ledo’s story. He’s a demi-god, the last son of Ares and a human woman. He’s been reborn every time Ze is but unlike Ze his memories are intact. He’s there to help Ze and to be ready when Ze does regain his memories and powers to defeat his father.

The final story in Lost Gods is Linc’s story. Linc was born an orphan like Ze but he grew up as Ze’s best friend and business partner. The two are as close as brothers. So when Ze is threatened Linc will stand as he always has by his side. While he is human the touch of a goddess’ blood does run in his veins. He just needs to find the right woman to empower it.

Thus my version of 3 lost gods was born instead of just one.

*WARNING* This is not an erotic romance. It does however, have sex when warranted and lots of violence and cussing. You have been warned.

EXCERPT CHAPTER 1
Five figures stood like statues partially around a pool of water.

“He can never remember.” The collective entity making up the Fates warned Kratos.

Kratos never raised his head to look at the four identical beautiful beings. Shrouded in shimmering white cloth from head to toe, with the planes of their faces barely visible, even the little of their features he glimpsed were ever changing. Seemingly to represent all the peoples of the world. At times, all four appeared feminine, but he was not so sure all were female. It mattered not. “Tell me nothing of what can or cannot come to pass. Would that I could have that gift, or curse to forget. Forget we no longer have the powers we once did. Have been all but forgotten. Lost in the grains of time.”

“It is as the world should be Kratos. You know this. Humans must make their own decisions, be the makers of their own will. Not that of the gods. No matter how powerful.”

He couldn’t tell which of them spoke, the voice came into his mind. Not even a voice exactly, more a thought that they wanted him to know. He scoffed. “Yes. The gods.” He placed his hand in the water swirling it, it was cool to the touch, and dispersed the image they’d been looking upon. At someone who in another age, other times had been the most powerful amongst them. Reason enough for the Fates to fear and condemn Zeus. The Father of them all, and a god he himself had killed, dispersing his body down to dust, carried off unto the four winds and mixed amongst all matter. Yet, never completely destroyed, pieces of him being reborn over the ages. God no more, each time just a man.

A fate worse than death for one once a god. Unfortunately, for them all, Zeus’ destruction created a chain of events opening the world to chaos, the fall of Olympus and everything they had once known. The Fates had no choice but to take control and punish them all. Perhaps their plan all along, and the excuse they needed to destroy all the gods. There could be none more powerful than the Fates. Still, Zeus must be called forth once more. Rather, what was left of him, hopefully it would be enough.

Kratos, pulled the black hood over his even darker locks, walked out of the obsidian hall into the crumbled ruins of what had once been Olympus, home of the gods. Even with his eyes open, he could still see the opulence of the buildings as they once stood. The gleaming golden doors twelve feet tall, the marbled hall, where one could hear music that lulled and pleased ones senses filling the halls. Now gone. All of it. The place reeked of age. And he no longer had the power to change any of it.

He would wish the Fates to a mortal hell, but they’d already placed him there and there was no release for his soul. His body melded into the dark matter making up the night, and he returned to the nothingness he was.

****

The four who remained behind continued to watch the water in the pond as it settled. Returning to its calm state and the vision came once more.

“He cannot remember…everything.” The husky whisper came from the center form.

“No. That would not bode well for what he must yet do,” the tallest of the four stated.

“As the son destroyed the father, so too must the father destroy the son,” one whispered.

“For all the powers the All Father had, he too came to his inevitable end. Death comes for all, even a god,” the final sister pronounced shaking her head.

“All the gods are dead. Long live the gods,” the cry came in unison vibrating with the power of the Fates.

****

“Hey Ze, you ready, man?”

Eyes the color of a summer storm zeroed in on the tall man standing at the office door. “Sorry, Linc.” Ze shut his laptop, pushing his chair away from his desk, as he stood. All six foot five of him, situated on a solidly built frame.

“Is that the Chinese?” Linc asked

“Yeah.”

Linc, his president of operations and right arm, referred to the latest deal his company, Lightning Enterprises was working on. He stepped into the room and glanced at the laptop. He stood a just a couple of inches shorter than Ze, wasn’t as broad in the shoulders, more like lean muscle. Under the veneer of the tailored trappings of his civilized suit was a body covered in a roadmap of tattoos. He also carried a knife sheathed at his ankle. You can take the boy out of the Greek slums, but some habits you never get rid of. But this boy now had an MBA from one of the best universities in the world.

Ze trusted him to run his company when he wasn’t around.

Linc would be shocked if he knew not only had Ze not been working on any last minute tweaking of their deal, but he hadn’t been working on anything related to business, legit, or otherwise. Since at times, they straddled the gray—another reason for the metal strapped to Linc’s calf. Instead, Ze had been dreaming. With his eyes wide open.

Book Review:Hidden (Five Fates, #1) by Amy McKinley

Hidden (Five Fates, #1)
by Amy McKinley

November 2nd 2015
by Champagne Book Group
243 pages
Cursed since birth, hunted by gods, and desperate for love—Jade never stood a chance.

Half-demon, half-goddess, Jade’s fate makes her a pawn in an epic battle among the gods. Hidden on Earth with her sisters, she successfully avoids the Oneiroi—the dream gods—bent on her destruction until the prophecy, long dormant, awakens a dark shadow within her.

Roen, a reclusive Worr demon known for his battles against the Oneiroi, is called to protect Jade. Together they must unlock their mysterious connection and find a way to beat back destiny. Can she outsmart the prophecy, change her fate, and find love—even when she learns who is connected to her destruction?

Amy McKinley’s Five Fates series centers on the lives of supernatural female quintuplets. With a god for a father and a darkness demon for a mother, each girl possesses a potent cocktail of magical potential; a potential feared by none other than Zeus himself. Plagued by a mysterious prophecy telling of the fall of gods at the hands of the five, Zeus sets out to destroy the sisters and secure his safety. However, the girls have managed to remain hidden. The girls’ security is threatened when Jade, one of the quints and the heroine of Hidden, missteps. Jade’s misfortune, however, also becomes her salvation when Roen, a member of an obscure demonic tribe, provides Jade protection, training, and romance.

Hidden is a rather vast series opener teeming with mythological context, plot, and characterization. It’s incredibly imaginative, but at times overly dense. Descriptions of Nightmare’ s dreamscapes or Jade’s magical paintings, while creative, were puzzling. I enjoyed the novel’s set up. Ever eager to learn, I brushed up on my Greek mythology and researched the cast of established characters. However, I found a lot of the book’s description to be rather confusing, including the prophecy that propels the plot. I like the fullness of characters; the bad guys aren’t one dimensional, but rather both good and bad with back stories and varied motivation. This will lead to interesting developments in future books.

Ultimately, my reading experience stalled out a bit with this book, particularly during the last half. I didn’t love Jade as a main character and Roen was pretty typical alpha male. Their romance was a foregone conclusion. I give McKinley points for trying something different; while the characters are humanoid, they retain demonic physical characteristics. Roen is described as having black horns, and Jade claws. While this doesn’t appeal to me personally, as I don’t find horns and claws sexy, it’s different and I admire that. The set up in Hidden is long and the conclusion comes swift, and without much revelation. I appreciate this is often the curse of a series opener and so I’m curious to see what’s coming in the world of the Five Fates.

Character Confession: Petra Robichaud (Immortally Embraced) + giveaway

Does PNR author Angie Fox mistreat Petra, the heroine from her Monster M*A*S*H series? Petra thinks so...
warning: this post contains Oreos!

Character confessions, Petra, Immortally Embraced

Angie Fox vs Dr. Petra Robichaud from Immortally Embraced

Hi! Angie Fox here and I write a series about a group of paranormal M*A*S*H doctors in the middle of a great war. Petra is a surgeon in the unit, and one of my main characters. I’m absolutely certain she loves me and wishes to shower me with rose petals, thanks to the hunky special ops soldier that I paired her with. He is sex on a stick. You are most welcome, Petra for all that I have given you.

Petra: You made him break up with me.

Angie: Well, yes, but he only did it to keep you out of danger. Investigators were on his tail. If they were to find out that you have a forbidden power, you could be killed. Or worse, the gods could come up with some kind of mythical punishment, like making you walk on eggshells until the end of time or setting you on fire upside down while spiders nest under your toenails.

Petra: Where do you come up with this stuff?

Angie: Don’t ask.

Petra: And while we’re at it, how come I’m on the front lines, saving lives and you’re sitting on your couch, eating Oreos?

Angie: The creamy filling helps me think of cool stuff to do to you. I’d share, but you can’t get cookies like this where you are.

Petra: No. I get to eat stale power bars and Fruit Stripe gum.

Angie: And blueberries! I gave you blueberries once!

Petra: That was during a sex scene and I was hardly paying attention to fruit at the time.

Angie: Which brings us back to why you should love me. Have you seen the body on your man? And we’ve all seen what he can do with it.

Petra: What ever happened to privacy?

Angie: But your life is so interesting. In this new book you face off against a crazy evil new enemy, you’re confronted with your past, and you’re up to her ears in baby mamma drama from a pregnant Medusa.

Petra: You know what? I like Medusa. She’s just a single mom, trying to do the best for her baby. Besides, I’ve never been afraid of snakes. Now if only she could learn to control her temper…

Angie: I’m sending you to her baby shower.

Petra: What the f&*? NO!

Angie: Your roommate Rodger is going to help me.

Petra: Fricking werewolves. I thought they were supposed to be loyal. What did you do? Bribe him with baby sea monsters?

Angie: Star Trek gear.

Petra: You don’t stop. It never stops…

Angie: Your butt is mine. Next book. Unless you want to start showing me some appreciation.

Petra: Good luck with that.

Angie: No worries. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Book Review: (ARC) Immortally Embraced by Angie Fox

Immortally Embraced (Monster M*A*S*H #2)
Angie Fox

IN THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES…
Even during a truce, Dr. Petra Robichaud has her hands full as the M*A*S*H surgeon to an army of warring gods—especially when Medusa herself turns up pregnant. Petra has no idea what to expect when a gorgon’s expecting, but she won’t let it turn her to stone. As the healer-hero of an ancient prophesy, it’s Petra’s job to keep the peace. But as the lover to a warrior demi-god, she knows how impossible some jobs can be…

IT’S EVERY GOD FOR HIMSELF.
Commander Galen is sexy, strong, and sworn to lead his team to hell and back. But when he announces to Petra that he can no longer risk her life for his love, the doctor is on her own…Until a mysterious new entity—in the form of a hot-blooded male—enters the picture. Can he be trusted? Can he be resisted? Meanwhile, an oracle delivers another prophesy that places Petra back on the frontlines with the man she may be bound to for eternity—in love, or in war…

Immortally Embraced is the second book in Angie Fox’s M.A.S.H. trilogy. Here is the order of the books:

Immortally Yours (Aug 2012)

Immortally Embraced (Feb 27, 2013)
Immortally Ever After (Aug 27, 2013)

Book #1
I read and reviewed book #1 Immortally Yours (here) and loved it.  Angie Fox is known for her light, humorous, and smexy romance series Accidental Demon Slayer. For her M.A.S.H. trilogy she decided to take a walk on the dark side. She has crafted a wonderfully original world where unbeknownst to humans, the old gods and the new gods (of all religions) are fighting it out in limbo and the fate of Earth depends on the outcome. The gods/goddesses have pulled certain humans some with supernatural talents into limbo to help with the wounded in army like M.A.S.H. camps. Fox manages to bring her trademark humor to this story, but she doesn’t let you forget the horrors of war and what it does to people emotionally and physically.

I can’t really talk about the romance because there is a love triangle of a sorts going on. Reading the books out of order will kind of spoil this aspect of the story but not the rest. I will say that after reading the first chapter of Immortally Embraced I wanted to cry and pull Ms. Fox’s hair out. Just kidding, I don’t want to really pull her hair out… much…
book #3

The series story arc about the war in limbo and the prophesies has really captured my attention and I can’t wait to find out what is going to happen in the last book or what new and crazy characters Angie will introduce us to . In Immortally Embraced we meet a berserker named Oghul who you don’t want to upset and a couple of very jealous and petty goddesses.

This is classified as a PNR and the romance is very much the PNR formula of “I can’t give into my feelings, yes I can, no I can’t…” which normally doesn't do a lot for me, but the backdrop for the romance is clever and there is enough world building to keep this urban fantasy lover happy. Another plus for the romance is the heroine Petra isn't like normal PNR heroines. She is more of a hero archetype. It is the hero in this book that has stayed chaste for 10 years because of his love for Petra and not the other way around… hence the love triangle I was talking about.

Here is an example of Fox’s humor:

Yow. Was it getting hot up here? I was starting to sweat. A jeep was bad enough, but if he thought I was going to ride over the Great Divide on dragon back…

He dropped his pants.

“Do you mind?” I asked, glancing behind us as he shucked his boots. Yes, I’d seen it all before, but not for ten years. And besides, I was still angry with him. And I kind of hated him and here he was stripping and Jesus on a pogo stick I’d forgotten how good he looked naked.
