Sheep Book Review: Bound (The Cities Below Book Two) by Jen Colly + giveaway

Bound (The Cities Below Book Two)
by Jen Colly
January 31, 2016
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Kensington/Lyrical
ISBN: 9781516101474
ASIN: B01FBZXSES
Number of pages: 200
Cover Artist: Valerie Tibbs
The streets are a battleground for humans, vampires, and demons alike—where survival is a skill, love is a weapon, and the most dangerous act is to care for another . . .

Keir is an assassin devoted to Lady Arianne, the last of her royal bloodline. He is sworn to protect her, and that means eliminating any threat to her life. But while on a mission, he is set upon by a pack of demons, barely escaping with his life.

Cleopatra lives by a set of rules so rigid she no longer knows her true self. But her kind and loving nature resurfaces when she finds a man, bloodied and dying. Moved to help him, she risks her future and her life to save a stranger far below her aristocratic station.

Their attraction to each other is as powerful as it is forbidden. But even as their love grows, Keir keeps his true identity a secret—and this lie is not the only threat to their love . . . or their lives.

It's so nice to get back to reading a vampire PNR! It feels like many books have passed in my life of the "non-fang" variety. But here we are once again, back in the g-spot I love the best. Vampires! *throws confetti in the air*

With 200 pages this one hits you hard and fast. Action and some high stakes adventure take the reader on a fun and quick journey. I didn't read book one, but that didn't matter at all. Book two seems to pick up right where things left off. This world of vampires is one I've read before but the new characters and steamy romance kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next.

I would have personally loved a little more mystery and plot originality but that's just my tastes. With so many authors out there you really need to stretch yourself sometimes to create something totally unique. However, you still get a lot of good reading in this one!

Getting 3 and 1/2 Vampire Sheep
KD

Excerpt:
Cleopatra was utterly trapped. She longed to close her eyes and block him out, but fear of the unknown kept them wide open. The man had no weapon, couldn’t possibly mean to harm her. Except, would he really need a weapon? She couldn’t fight him, wouldn’t even know where to begin.

He studied her closely, and when his head tilted slightly, she noticed every bit of his focus fixated on her neck. Not a murderer. He wanted to mark her, to bite her neck, leave the wound to heal and forever bind her to him. This was why daughters of the aristocracy were kept under a tight watch. The mark, unbreakable and indisputable, would give this man access to her family’s wealth and prestige, and bind her to him until death.

He reached for her, head descending to her neck. Cleopatra quickly covered his target with both hands. Tears gathered in her eyes, sorrow distorted her voice. “I don’t want this. Please, don’t hurt me.”

The man rocked back as if she’d smacked him, and for the first time since he’d appeared, he looked at her face. His eyes met hers and didn’t look away as he brought his hand to her cheek and brushed away a tear. He saw her, truly saw her, and the adoration in his eyes sent a completely different shimmy down her spine.

In one step, he crowded her, pressing his cheek against hers. “Could never hurt you. My angel,” his captivating voice crooned, so close to her ear. He drew in a deep breath, his face buried in her hair. Then he whispered, “My Cleo.”

She gasped. The shortened version of her name on his lips sounded strangely intimate, as though he’d known her for years. The warmth rolling off his body kept her intensely aware of his close proximity, and she held her breath, waiting for his next move to prove his intent. He didn’t bite her, didn’t hurt her, and the sincere affection in his gentle touch left her so very confused. Any other man would have bitten her, taken advantage of the opportunity laid before him. But this man? His intent to bite her had been unmistakable, and he’d stopped because he…cared for her? She didn’t understand.

His hand slipped from her face, dropped to his side, and he staggered back, moving as if through a dream. He still watched her, but he swayed, that intense focus suddenly gone. The man crumpled to the floor with a heavy thud.

Dragging in a long, shaky breath, she blinked away tears she’d been staring through. A few more deep breaths, and she allowed herself to really look at him. He lay on his side, knees slightly curled, motionless. Something was wrong with him. People didn’t just fall over.

Gripping the railing, which had swiftly become her personal anchor, she pointed her foot and gingerly nudged his arm. When he didn’t move, she put more force behind the kick. Cleopatra jumped as his hand fell away from his ribs, thumping onto the floor. Blood coated his fingers.

He was bleeding? She’d missed the injury completely. The saturated, glistening spot had been hidden under his hand and camouflaged by his black button-up shirt. He’d been so close and she hadn’t… She glanced down at herself. Blood streaked across her pale blue gown, more evidence of his severe injury.

The elevator doors slid open. Oh God, if someone were to see them together in this state, what would they think? What would happen to her, or to him? Her heart hammered, panic flooding through her as she peeked out into the main corridor of Sterling.

The white, gold-trimmed corridor stretched on, empty. The elevator doors slid shut, and there it would stay, unless called. She might not have much time. Peering down at the unconscious man, she tried to fit the puzzle pieces together.

She’d mistaken his intent. He’d needed sustenance badly, and now he bled out, dying at her feet. Because of who she was, he refused to harm her, to take from her. How did he have the willpower to block his instincts from taking over, to stop from feeding?

Whoever he was, she had to save him. She dropped to her knees and pushed away any lingering fear under her newfound resolve. Tugging his shirt from his dark jeans, she searched for the injury. In the midst of his blood-slicked skin, the wound gaped open between his ribs. It looked like he’d been slashed, the nasty gash a result of being on the wrong end of a knife. Just a guess. She had no experience with this sort of villainy.

Her hand flew to her mouth. The murderer running loose in Galbraith used a knife. Could this man be yet another victim?

“Can you hear me? What happened to you? Who did this?” She awkwardly patted his whiskered cheek. His eyes fluttered open, then shut again.

“Balinese is safe.” His voice trembled, his words slurred without support from his shallow breath. “Paris. Demons.”

Cleopatra’s fingers fumbled as she pulled away his shirt collar. Several teeth-like gouges in his shredded skin oozed blood near his collarbone. Demons. They’d almost made a meal of him, and he was a bloody mess, but the real danger came from that knife wound. It looked deep, and if he’d been damaged internally and lost too much blood, he might not survive.

He needed blood now. She bit her wrist and pressed it against his mouth. His lips didn’t part, and his body refused to respond. A rivulet of blood slid down his cheek. He’d die if she didn’t fight for him.

Sabine Priestley guest post: A somewhat embarrassing inside scoop on Alien Attachments + giveaway

Hey sheep herders! Thanks for having me over today! I found you guys some time ago while on the trail of Gini Koch. Believe it or not, she’s the reason this series exists. Also, I once accidently emailed her thinking I was addressing a friend coming over for a pot luck. She was kind enough to email back and say it would be a bit of a drive to Florida from Arizona, but thanks anyways. Love her.

Anyway I thought I’d go with something different today.

People always ask writers where the stories come from (this is not the different part). Here’s the somewhat embarrassing inside scoop on Alien Attachments.

Virtually everything I’ve written came from what I call a dream seed. I remember an annoying amount of my dreams, always have. In the dream I’m floating in a pool on a blow-up lounger. A man wades in and approaches from behind. There’s a crazy energy between us. I don’t know who he is, but we’re tied together somehow. We both feel it. He stands behind me and places his hands on my shoulders. Oh my god that touch! I feel it everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. He’s tracing his fingers up and down my arms. A pleasure unlike anything I’ve ever felt is building and I just know he feels it too. My heart is pounding as I come (can I say that here? Lol) I know he’s right there with me.

Unfortunately, having an orgasm tends to wake a person. The experience was cool enough that I got up and took notes.

I couldn’t make a perfect fit for it in the book, but I couldn’t let it go either. I had to tweak it a bit. It’s still in a pool and there’s still some crazy energy/pleasure that goes on, but this is when my leading man, Ian, discovers something unexpected about Dani. She has psi. Like a moth to the flame, he can’t help himself and gets sucked in. In doing so, he starts an irreversible bonding process that could destroy his family.

Good times!

Thanks for letting me swing by,
Sabine

Finding one’s psi-mate is something every Sandarian hopes for, but when Ian Cavacent accidentally starts the bonding process with the Earthling, Dani, he has to fight his desire with every ounce of his being. If the process is completed, it would be both political and financial suicide for Ian and his family.

A natural klutz, Dani somehow always manages to land on her feet and win those mixed martial arts matches she’s so fond of. At home on Cat Island her balance is thrown when bazillionaire Ian takes notice.

Unfortunately some butt-ugly Torog aliens also take notice sending her life spiraling out of control and into Ian’s arms. But Dani isn’t the type of woman to let some alien voodoo decide her future or her mate…no matter how gorgeous the man is or how much pleasure he gives her.

For centuries the Cavacents have mined Earth for a precious element, carnium, while protecting the planet from other alien species.

Thanks to the Torogs, Dani and Ian must flee to Sandaria. As Dani learns to use her newfound psi powers, the empire crumbles around them.

Will their love be strong enough to keep them alive and get them back to Earth?

Excerpt:
“Earth Protector? You’re kidding right?”

“No. Pretty much what it sounds like. Cliche as it may be, we are not alone in the universe.”

Dani held Jared’s gaze. She’d heard what he said, but couldn’t process the words. They sat on her brain like little beings, patiently waiting to be let in. Knock, knock. Dani let out a nervous laugh. Maybe if I ignore them, they’ll go away. Jared didn’t blink. Or maybe not.

“So you’re not an EP?”

“Nah, I’m human, just like you. I’m what they call a Support Agent, or SA for short. I do what I can for Ian and the other EPs, but I’m based with Ian.”

“So you’re a spy.”

“Support agent, not secret agent,” Jared said. “Although, we are a secret.”

“You’re a spy for aliens.”

“Stop it. It’s not like that.”

Interview: Jeffe Kennedy (The Talon of the Hawk (The Twelve Kingdoms #3) + giveaway

Sharon: Hello Jeffe and welcome to I Smell Sheep. Katie and I recently met you at Coastal Magic 2015. You were always dressed so beautifully! But we got to ask about the hat…does size matter? *cue music* “You like big hats and you cannot lie…”
Jeffe: LOL! Size TOTALLY matters – as in, the bigger, the better! Seriously, I do wear big hats because I started wearing them primarily to protect my skin. I’m a very fair Scots/Irish girl living in New Mexico. I’ve also lost two friends to melanoma. I like a broad brim to maximize that sun protection. Not so sexy, but there we are. And thank you for the compliment!

Sharon: The third book in your successful series The Twelve Kingdoms releases this month. Can you tell us a little about the series?
Jeffe: Sure! Right now we have at least five books planned in the series. It began with THE MARK OF THE TALA, continued with THE TEARS OF THE ROSE and winds up the initial trilogy with THE TALON OF THE HAWK, out May 26. These three books are the stories of the three princesses, each more beautiful than the last, daughters of the High King of the Twelve Kingdoms. The first book is about the middle princess, Andi, and her discovery that she’s betrothed to the king of an enemy kingdom they’d believed to be mythological, the land of the Tala. This overall tale of the three sisters is about finding the truth behind lies and coming to grasp with what love and power are really about.

Sharon: Books 1-3 are about each of the sisters, but I see there are two more books in the series coming next year. Who/What will they be about?
Jeffe: Yes, THE PAGES OF THE MIND will be next and it’s Dafne’s story, for those who are familiar with the series so far. For those who aren’t, Dafne Mailloux was a surprise character for me. She’s a librarian at Castle Ordnung who walked onto the page and helped my middle princess, Andi, with the information she needed. She goes on to help each of the sisters in their journeys. With the way TALON ends, a whole new raft of problems crops up and Dafne goes on an information-gathering quest, as is her forte. She’ll have two companions going with her – Jepp, who we meet in TALON, one of Princess Ursula’s elite fighting force of Hawks, and Zynda, a Tala cousin. Jepp’s book will be the fifth, THE EDGE OF THE BLADE.

Sharon: Tell us a “first” from your life… (first kiss, first pet, first rejection…)
Jeffe: I have two first kisses, which is probably cheating, but I define them really differently. When I was around five and in summer day camp, we played a kissing game. Each day the winners were crowned King and Queen (I have zero recollection of the rules), and everyone had to chip in to buy them a Dolly Madison pie, which they would share. I was reigning Queen that entire summer. After that, I settled into a more reserved lifestyle and made sweet sixteen and never been kissed. My first real kiss happened just weeks after that birthday and seriously rocked my world.

Sharon: This is the year of the sheep. How have sheep shaped or changed your life?
Jeffe: So, this is a true story. I graduated from summer day camp to going to Girl Scout camp in the mountains, many years later. (Alas, no kissing games.) Because I was in the horsewoman program, I was in and around the stables a lot. We fed, groomed and saddled up the horses in the mornings, helped the younger girls with lessons, then did long rides and games in the afternoons. Near the stables was also a shed with this one, lone sheep. I have no idea why it was there, but it hadn’t been shorn, though it was midsummer. It seemed so miserably hot that several of us took it in our heads to shear it ourselves. Let me tell you – shearing a sheep is flipping HARD WORK! Also, the wool is really oily, dirty and it has BUGS in it. We were all filthy by the time we finished, but the sheep capered about quite happily, so we felt rewarded for our good deed. Ever since, however, I have had a healthy respect for those who take care of sheep.
Sharon: Sounds like you guys changed that sheep’s life for the better too! Aw, let’s take a moment to reflect on all the sheep in our lives…

Sharon: Do you hoard collect anything?
Jeffe: I confess I’m a hoarder collector from way back. When I was little, I collected unicorns and pictures of waterfalls. And books. Then I moved into collecting masks and more books. For a long time, I collected glass animals (including unicorns) and had several display cases for them. I also collected books. I eventually got rid of all the waterfall posters and the glass animals have broken over time, so I only have a few left. I’ve culled the book collection, but I have some still from childhood, and even from my parents’ and grandparents’ youth. I still collect masks and have them hanging all over the house.
Sharon: Do you have a favorite mask, one that means the most to you?
Jeffe: Oooh, that would be a difficult pick. I have quite a few masks packed away – as I seem to have a whole bunch of them now – so the ones that are out are all special in some way. I have one that I bought from the Cirque du Soleil store immediately after seeing O, that reminds me of the delicious feeling of that show. That one is by my desk, along with a Venetian style cat mask that’s black on black. Both of those feed me creatively. But my most favorite might be the one that started it all, that my mother brought me from New Orleans when I was a little girl. It’s ceramic, with shades of pink and yellow in flower petals that rain over the face.

Sharon: Not only do you like big hats…you like big cats too! Can you introduce us to your Maine Coons? (would love pics of the cats if you have them)
Jeffe: Yes! My Maine coon cats are Jackson (the black and white tuxedo) and Isabel (the blue smoke). They are so smart and such great companions.
Sharon: They are beautiful! Can you tell me about the mirror-holding monkeys in the background? <G>
Jeffe: Ha! I love which stuff people pick out in the backgrounds. I bought that mirror in an antique store in Richmond, Virginia as a Christmas present for my mother. She was collecting mirrors at the time, for her New Orleans condo. I thought it was perfect for the carnival feel of New Orleans. (We have a theme here.) That was pre-Katrina. When she moved back to Denver, she brought that mirror with her. Then, when she consolidated to living in one house – now in Tucson – I “inherited” a bunch of her stuff. That was one of the things.

Sharon: What is one of nature’s most awe inspiring moments/creation for you?
Jeffe: I’m kind of a nature girl, so there are many. I live outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, in this house with an incredible view. We get pretty much from sunrise to sunset and the skies are freaking amazing. My desk as a view down this long open basin to the distant mountains. I take tons of pictures. Here’s one of a solstice sunrise that’s one of my favorites.
Sharon: Wow, I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed a sunrise or sunset like that before.
Jeffe: Clearly you need to visit New Mexico!

You heard her...pile into the bus cause we're heading to NM!

Rapid Fire

Sharon: Fae King or Vampire King?
Jeffe: Fae King

Sharon: Warriors or Royalty?
Jeffe: Royal warriors!

Sharon: Where’s the produce section or Where’s the candy isle?
Jeffe: CHOCOLATE!
Sharon: See, I knew I liked you from the beginning. *grabs Jeffe’s hand and runs toward M&M World*
Jeffe: Yay!!

Sharon: Morticia or Elvia?
Jeffe: Morticia, of course.

Sharon: Leather or Lace?
Jeffe: Both!

Sharon: Ping pong or Pool?
Jeffe: Pool, with cabana boys and margaritas :D
Sharon: snort, I see what you did there…I like the way you think.
Jeffe: ~flutters lashes~

credit
Sharon: violin or guitar?
Jeffe: Harp
Sharon: Do you play? For some reason I picture you as a harpist, and that makes me think of harpies…which I don’t picture you as…
Jeffe: Heh, I’ve no doubt been CALLED a harpy... But yes, I do play. Kinda. I have an Irish harp (also called a lever harp) and I took lessons for a few years. I am, however, quite terrible at it. I keep thinking I should sell my harp as I never play these days (see: terrible at it), but I’m fond of it.

A HEAVY CROWN

Three daughters were born to High King Uorsin, in place of the son he wanted. The youngest, lovely and sweet. The middle, pretty and subtle, with an air of magic. And the eldest, the Heir. A girl grudgingly honed to leadership, not beauty, to bear the sword and honor of the king.

Ursula’s loyalty is as ingrained as her straight warrior’s spine. She protects the peace of the Twelve Kingdoms with sweat and blood, her sisters from threats far and near. And she protects her father to prove her worth. But she never imagined her loyalty would become an open question on palace grounds. That her father would receive her with a foreign witch at one side and a hireling captain at the other—that soldiers would look on her as a woman, not as a warrior. She also never expected to decide the destiny of her sisters, of her people, of the Twelve Kingdoms and the Thirteenth. Not with her father still on the throne and war in the air. But the choice is before her. And the Heir must lead.

Book Review: Marked For Magic by Daisy Banks

Marked For Magic
by Daisy Banks

Kindle Edition
April 28th 2015
by Lyrical Press
The witch mark on Nin’s hand is a curse. She has no magic powers, whatever the lore says. But the village believes. The old crone’s wisdom is to see her banished. Ragged and hungry, she must serve the Mage. Alone in his tower, she is his chattel. But Mage Thabit is not what Nin expected—the bright green eyes and supple form under his cloak are not the stuff of nightmares, and kindness hides in his brusque heart. Thabit senses that Nin is more than she seems, too. When true nightmares haunt the land, it is precisely her elusive powers that might deliver them.

Marked for Magic is a fairytale of types. The tale unfolds with Nin, a young woman cast out of her village for baring the mysterious witch’s mark on her hand. With no other options, Nin finds herself on the door step of Mage Thabit and at his mercy. Ignoring his initial instinct to unceremoniously dismiss the unkempt girl, Thabit reluctantly admits her into his home as a servant. The two settle into a routine and, predictably, come to find one another irresistible. Nin comes of age learning from Thabit and the magical community; readying her skills for the ultimate test.

I was initially attracted to this book for its stunning cover design. I love pretty things. But the cover was slightly more entrancing than the text within. It was a quick, entertaining read, but in no way life-altering. It was fairly predictable throughout. I liked the growing tension between Nin and Thabit, but I really couldn’t get into Thabit as a romantic love interest. I just couldn’t lose myself in a poetically poor, straw-hat-wearing, slender, vegetarian. Maybe he reminded me of a guy I dated in my 20s, who can be similarly described. Maybe I just really like meat. Maybe he’s just too divergent from the filthy rich, muscle-bound alpahs I’ve become accustomed to. Whatever the case, he just didn’t do it for me. However, Banks does a good job of convincing the reader of Nin’s utter devotion and attraction to Thabit. I bought into their romance as something sweet and touching. Ultimately, I found Marked for Magic to be a charming, quaint tale, but lacking in memorable spark.
