YA Fantasy Author E.P. Bellows's character, Roman, has questions... + giveaway

Roman has questions ~
Here’s the thing, Lizzie; I can certainly understand my less-than-pleasant disposition. It suits me, honestly. I’ve had it rough… raised by human types who used me for my powers then abandoned me as yesterday’s smoor. I was just a fledgling after all! These humans are downright awful and have no place in the realm. I have been satisfied to hold that point of view close to my dark void of a heart.

Lizzie, you had me pinned as the bruting partner to Celeste, the light and beauty of all things - my opposite, yet still, my absolute match. In my opinion, existence in Azra’s Pith does not get much better.

My big question, Lizzie… as the one soul in control of MY fate, why did you have to go and give me a soft side? I could have gone for centuries as an Empyrean not caring for anyone except Celeste. I don’t need “friends” or anyone caring about me. Was I not adequate as a sinister, scheming architect of mischief?

Now I feel conflicted. I’m complicated. I have angst. I feel pain to the extent of rage when others I care about (humans, no less) are in trouble. I’m, I’m… vulnerable! What happened to plotting John William Drake’s demise? Remember?

From the author ~
Fear not, Roman. You are still my dark, bruiting Empyrean Wizard. You are quickly becoming my favorite. While complex, you are loyal and brave. Your fate is bittersweet and your journey only grows more captivating as the layers reveal themselves. I can't wait to write your journey and watch it unfold on the screen. As for John William’s demise… we shall see 🖤

Join John William Drake and his friends on their Quest for the Lost City of Copia… but beware, something evil lurks in the shadows.

John William Drake believed there was something special about the medallion Celeste found. It chimed and sparkled in the sunlight. He was right; the medallion was from Copia, a lost city masked in time. Legendary tales were repeated of a golden city inhabited by Empyrean Wizards until it was plagued by dark sorcery when a meager fledgling magician by the name of Imperious the Great wandered in.

Some did not believe the city ever existed; others who knew better wanted it to stay lost. How did it all start? How would it end? The answer simmered for hundreds of years waiting for the right moment to escape.

John and Celeste were more than ready for another adventure. The journey to Copia was also a search for his missing father. They were unaware of just how dangerous their quest was until it was too late. The medallion’s power could bring the lost city to life again, unlocking the dark past dormant within its walls. The young explorers were in the middle of a battle of ancient sorcery that could end with an evil capable of destroying the realm and they held the key.

Excerpt Unearthed:
~The Copian Mediallion is discovered after being buried for years by layers of the realm.

Come on, wings! Don't fail me!" Gusts of wind blew the little bird in all directions. Her vivid red feathers stole the sun’s beams from the sky.

This was not an ordinary bird. This was a young Empyrean wizard named Celeste. Empyrean wizards lived in an extraordinary place where fantastic creatures and magic were a part of every day. All Empyrean Wizards have a bird form appropriately coordinated with their personality. This particular Empyrean was fearless and kind. She also had a knack for finding
adventure and the inevitable trouble accompanying it.

"Made it!" Her small but determined wings descended into the trees below. There was a peculiar tree she heard whispers about, and she was on her way to see it for herself. The tree was believed to be a passageway to the other side. Of course, she had no idea what the other side was, which only drove her curiosity. She perched on a boulder next to a single dead tree that boasted the broadest tree trunk in all of Copious Forest. The tree was surrounded by a blanket of thriving greenery. Celeste cautiously glanced around and gave her feathers a ruffle. A young girl emerged through the feathers with wild hair the same shade of vibrant red.

“Incredible!” she gasped and scuttled over to the tree. She poked her fingers out of the sleeve of her cloak and ran them along the rigid bark on the trunk. The bark chimed a soft melody as her fingers went along.

“So it is real.” Her eyes beamed. She stepped back and pulled a scroll out of her cloak. As she unraveled the scroll, the verses of an ancient spell were revealed. “The Tunnel of Light Enchantment ...

Cuniculum lucis incantationis tempus sit, electi ingrediantur. Cum tempus est, electi per cuniculum lucis relinquere possunt.

When it is time, the chosen may enter. When it is time, the chosen may leave through the tunnel of light." She gazed at the dead tree, waiting for even a small flicker of magic. The trunk looked like it had not been seen or touched in years. “Hmm ..." Celeste raised her brow.

A prickly chill traveled down her spine. She squeezed her arms across her chest to soothe her goosebumps. "Hello? Is-is someone there?" Celeste frantically glanced around.

An angry groan rumbled through trees.

“I'm not afraid of you!" she declared. “Come out and show yourself!”

Twigs and bits of forest flew past her curls. She scrambled behind the boulder. Sharp whispers buzzed through the gaps in the trees.

“The moan went from a groan to a vicious roar. A wind funnel shaped like a pair of long, wretched claws appeared.

“Oh, no—it’s the Rive.” Her body tensed.

The dark spell was strong enough to twirl her straight into the air with one dizzying burst. It plowed through trees and shot rocks in all directions. Celeste's cloak whipped around in a frenzy. She crouched behind the boulder and gripped her hands around the base. Then her body lifted off the ground. Inch by inch, her fingers slipped from the boulder. "Oh no!" Her head throbbed from intense pressure as the wind consumed her.

"Where is it? I must find it," the Rive whispered sharply, bringing a sting to Celeste's ears.

"Where is what? What are you talking about?" she shrieked.

"Where is it? I must find it!" the Rive's whisper was now at a rattling shrill.

Celeste closed her eyes and fisted her trembling hands. She felt herself drifting into a dizzying slumber. “I have to channel the élan. Come on, Celeste ... concentrate. I can do this!"

She took a deep breath. "Azra lucem tuam ostende. Azra tua industria illuminet …

Azra lucem tuam ostende. Azra tua industria illuminet."

A warm, vibrant energy burst through her cloak. The dark spell released its grip. It hissed and hurled rocks at Celeste. She stood her ground and
extended her hand. “Azra lucem tuam ostende. Azra tua industria illuminetet,” she shouted. The intense light shot out of the palm of her hand like a laser beam, piercing the spell. The Rive let out a hiss and vanished.

Celeste collapsed to the ground, breathless. “I just did that.” She examined the palm of her hand in astonishment.

The Rive’s vicious wind removed layers of dirt and debris from the forest floor. Celeste pulled herself up to the boulder and adjusted her cloak. A glimmer shining through the loose dirt caught her eye.

She scooped up the shimmering clump and scraped the forest coating off it until all that remained was a medallion with strange markings and feathered wings carved in the center. It chimed and sparkled in her hands. Celeste stuffed it in her cloak and cautiously looked around. An excited giggle slipped out just before she morphed back into a little red bird and flew above the trees.

A little about me…

Let's see... When I was eight, I had a pet turkey. I used to take it with me on my short-lived paper route. Needless to say, I was terrible at delivering the paper. No one wanted a "Dollar Saver" with turkey poop splattered across the best coupons on the front page.

Books... "Treasure Island" is a fantastic pirate tale. I love just about anything by Roald Dahl. Who could ever leave out Tolkien? I would also like to thank C.S. Lewis for sending me on an unrelenting childhood quest for portals to amazing worlds.

I write fantasy stories for children. Yep - proud fantasy geek here. It's pretty darn awesome to escape to another realm with sorcerers and wizards for a chunk of the day. The underlying theme in my stories is empowerment and living purposefully. We all have that spark inside just waiting to shine ;)

When football is on I turn into a cookie-eating pottymouth. I have a theory that avocados are the Jedi of all foods. I also believe the aroma of garlic and butter sizzling in a pan is pure magic.

Book Review: A Swift and Savage Tide (Captain Kit Brightling #2) by Chloe Neill

A Swift and Savage Tide (Captain Kit Brightling #2)
by Chloe Neill
November 30, 2021
Chloe Neill’s bold, seafaring heroine Captain Kit Brightling sets sail for the high seas and high sorcery in this swashbuckling fantasy series.

Captain Kit Brightling is Aligned to the magic of the sea, which makes her an invaluable asset to the Saxon Isles and its monarch, Queen Charlotte. The Isles and its allies will need every advantage they can get: Gerard Rousseau, the former Gallic emperor and scourge of the Continent, has escaped his island prison to renew his quest for control of the Continent.

Gerard has no qualms about using dangerous magic to support his ambitions, so Kit and the crew of her ship, the Diana, are the natural choice to find him—and help stop him. But then Kit’s path unexpectedly crosses with that of the dashing and handsome Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, who’s working undercover on the Continent in his own efforts to stop Gerard. And he’s not the only person Kit is surprised to see. An old enemy has arisen, and the power he’ll wield on Gerard’s behalf is beautiful and terrible. Sparks will fly and sails will flutter as Kit and crew are cast into the seas of adventure to fight for queen and country.

Kit Brightling is an accomplished, highly skilled sea captain of the Saxon Isles. A young woman in a largely male profession, Captain Kit is undaunted and determined in her assignment to help protect the isles from an advancing foe. Kit possesses a magical alignment with sea currents. This alignment provides Kit and her crew an advantage as they covertly pursue and surveil enemy forces. However, recognizing the power and potential of such an alignment, the isles monitor and sanction the use of magic. Kit’s relationship with her magic is wary. Exiled Emperor Gerard has been gathering forces against the isles and its allies. He is amassing volatile magical power regardless of the danger it poses to the continent.

A Swift and Savage Tide is the fabulous follow-up to Neil’s first series installment, The Bright and Breaking Sea. I adored the first book and greatly anticipated Kit’s next adventure. This fantasy series has it all: a confident, formidable female heroine, adventure, espionage, and smouldering romance. The plot is fun and engaging. I was also most pleased the romance between Captain Kit and Viscount Rian Grant is more fully realized in this installment. I found A Swift and Savage Tide to be an all-consuming, wildly entertaining read from start to finish.

This series has long-term potential. While threats remain, there are other creative, curious, and courageous Brightlings in the wings waiting to support Kit and future developments. I cannot wait for the next sea-faring adventure.

Book Review: The Bright and Breaking Sea (Captain Kit Brightling #1) by Chloe Neill

The Bright and Breaking Sea (Captain Kit Brightling #1)
by Chloe Neill
November 17, 2020
Publisher: Berkley
377 pages
Genre: historical fantasy, Greek & Roman myths
Chloe Neill brings her trademark wit and wild sense of adventure to a stunning seafaring fantasy starring a dauntless heroine in a world of magic and treachery.

Kit Brightling, rescued as a foundling and raised in a home for talented girls, has worked hard to rise through the ranks of the Isles’ Crown Command and become one of the few female captains in Queen Charlotte's fleet. Her ship is small, but she's fast—in part because of Kit’s magical affinity to the sea. But the waters become perilous when the queen sends Kit on a special mission with a partner she never asked for.

Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, may be a veteran of the Continental war, but Kit doesn’t know him or his motives—and she’s dealt with one too many members of the Beau Monde. But Kit has her orders, and the queen has commanded they journey to a dangerous pirate quay and rescue a spy who's been gathering intelligence on the exiled emperor of Gallia.

Kit can lead her ship and clever crew on her own, but with the fate of queen and country at stake, Kit and Rian must learn to trust each other, or else the Isles will fall....

Listen to Chloe read chapter 1: LINK

Captain Kit Brightling has been forging a promising career as a member of the Isles’ Crown Command. Her supernatural command of the sea, combined with undaunting determination, has made her a rising young star in the field. She’s young, energetic, and determined to prove her worth in the male-dominated sphere. Nothing has come easily to Kit, raised as an orphan by her adventurous benefactor Hetta and Kit’s resentment of the “Beau Monde”, the realm’s privileged class is clear: “its members born into extraordinary wealth and primarily concerned, at least in Kit’s experience, with their own comfort and ease.” When Queen Charlotte commands Kit to team with Colonel Rian Grant, Viscount Queenscliffe, a member of the Beau Monde, resentment simmers.

The Bright and Breaking Sea is a wholly entertaining fantasy adventure, marking the start of a very special series. Kit and Rian make a remarkable team evolving from frosty colleagues to reluctant partners, to something more. Neill builds a rich fantasy realm while commenting on contemporary concerns such as gender and class equality. Her characters are rich and varied. The action, adventure, and slow-burn romance are set against building political tension sure to propel the action of this series for installments to come.

Kit is a fresh, forthright female main determined to maintain her independence: “I’ve a negative view of the requirements that women play at being helpless to attract a wealthy man, and exchange meaningful activity to become accessories, like a soft ug or charming vase once married.” She is eventually forced to confront her own judgements against Grant and his birthright when he proves to be as focussed and determined as she.

I had a legitimate book hangover after concluding The Bright and Breaking Sea. I anxiously anticipate future installments. Fans of fantasy adventure will appreciate this thoughtful, entertaining read. I look forward to the unfolding of political espionage of the Isles and beyond. I am hopeful the other girls of Brightling house, as well as their intriguing sponsor Hetta, will feature in coming installments.

Book Review: Roman (Demon Rising Book 1) by Hurri Cosmo

Roman (Demon Rising Book 1)
by Hurri Cosmo
February 19, 2020
274 pages
I belong to a Demon Lord. His name is Roman. He’s tall, strong, has long dark hair, a deep sexy voice and, let me tell you, absolutely f-ing gorgeous. Yep. I even wear his ring. Third finger, left hand.

Except – its’s not a wedding band. Far from it, actually. It simply means I’m his submissive.

Well – it doesn’t really mean that either, although I wish it did.

No. The ring’s function is only to give me “sight”. Being human, once I had it on, I could suddenly see Roman’s stupid lost legions; very nasty scary things that would as soon kill me as look at me. And because I wear the ring, guess what? It’s now my job to recapture all those creatures for him. Yay me, right?

At least I get to be close to Roman… sometimes.

But, to tell you the truth, I was tricked into putting this damn ring on by Cathy, some random woman I met at a park, who unfortunately likes Roman, too. A whole lot. She brazenly flirts with the demon every chance she gets and right in front of me, too. Crap, it pisses me off. In fact, she brags she was the one who found me, got the ring on me and then offered me up to Roman like I was a T-bone steak or something.

Well – honestly – that part’s okay.

However, there’s something else going on. Something big. Because there’s another gorgeous Demon Lord in our little earth realm and he will stop at nothing to capture Roman’s loose legions for himself. Not only that, seems he’s out to catch me, as well.

Huh. My name is Micah and things just got very interesting.

Overview:
Micah was an average guy who lived in the city. He’d had some rough spots in his life but had pretty much found an equilibrium: a job, friends, a decent neighborhood.

Like every neighborhood, just about anywhere in the world, there’s always one place shrouded in urban legends.

Only Micah has a personal connection to the abandoned energy plant called Black Sands, it’s where his abusive brother met his demise when—according to friends—he tried to summon a demon.

Micah fears Black Sands but is also drawn to it, often picnicking in its shadow at a nearby park. The strange presence it radiates calls to him and he doesn’t know why until he finds himself wearing a ring, and under the control of the demon residing there.

Roman is a demon, who lost his legions after a destructive betrayal. When your strength in hell is based on the numbers in your legions, that can be a very bad thing. He’s managed to track them to the realm of earth and has set up shop in an old factory, close to the gateway opened to him. There he’s lured a few humans to wear a ring that’s able to capture the escaped scouters and bring them back to him.

It’s boring, it’s time consuming, and it’s redundant. Human-ring-illusions of grandeur and eventually the death of the human where Roman gets their soul.

The same grind every few years until Micah. For whatever reason, the rules just don’t apply to him.

Story Concept: B+
I’m a sucker for reluctant heroes falling for Alpha males and those Alpha males realizing they are not as in control as they think.

Demons can make that trope a lot of fun.

Here we have earth one of many realms where hell can reach and demons can enter. And while demons cause some general havoc for the most part they mind their own business. They seem to have no love lost to mortals and use them as tools.

The story concept of antihero exerting his power over a being he sees as lesser isn’t new, but it was presented in a way that was a lot of fun.

World-Building: C+
World Building is probably one of the hardest thing for any writer and while most of this story takes place on earth, there are details about hell and what goes on there that are never touched on or touched on briefly leaving blank spots or vague patches where Roman just exists. His disappearances to take care of demon business were prime spots where his world could have been tethered to the earth realm.

Generally, the reader knows earth, they don’t know the fantastical world that only exists in the writer’s mind. Without that rich foundation, the story has been left feeling unanchored and adrift.

Characters: B++
I liked both main characters, Roman and Micah. Their snarky banter, their chemistry, it was great. Both of them were extremely well rounded and very real to the touch.

Where I felt they faltered was in Micah’s constant internal dialog and the use of the word “crap” among a guy who obviously had no problem dropping an F bomb. It was almost as if his inner “Ward Cleaver” kept trying to escape.

Roman, for all his toughness, seemed too willing to back down or simply not step up to the plate.

While you’re normally not supposed to like the bad guys, my reasons for disliking them was the over the top almost petulant behavior. Then, in all their evil and “badness” they fizzle in the end. They didn’t strike fear in me or even worry, I just found them an annoying fly buzzing around my potato salad.

The surprise bad guy was easy to see from the very beginning, transparent, and rather boring. The fact the main characters didn’t see through this right away made me really question their powers of observation.

Secondary Characters: NA
There were few secondary characters but none had enough read time to mention.

Plot Execution: B-
I almost put this book down because of how slow it got going. The first couple of pages I was primed for something exciting to happen, then it began to drag, and drag some more. I get that there was supposed to be suspense being built between the moment Micah stumbles into his journey as a ring bearer, to the moment he meets Roman, but it felt more like meeting a word count rather than moving the story.

The background story, and what felt like important events were delivered in large batches of exposition that ripped me out of the heat of the moment and bombarded with information until I forgot what had been happening when it began. This was made worse by implementing dialog between characters acting in past perfect tense.

There were also past events that were left hanging with no real explanation as to why they were important and what part they played despite being presented in a way with a heavy insinuation that they played a big part in the ability for the story to unfold. Events that seemed to have set Micah, on his path to the present.

After Micah has his first encounter with Roman, things pick up until he goes out on his demon hunts. This was another place ripe for action instead it dragged. The writer a great job in making the demons as disturbing but interactions with them felt short, choppy, and incomplete. There was no real anticipation or worry and the repetitive trips out, one after the other, quickly became monotonous.

What saved this book was the brilliant chemistry between the two main character. Their dialog, their interactions left me wanting more about them, more time with them, and to see them actually build on one another.

There was no real relationship building. There wasn’t really even “insta-love”. They were just suddenly there, pushed into the same space where they wanted each other. I feel like this could have been so much more powerful especially with the obvious skill this writer exhibits in their ability to have characters play off of each other with realistic and powerful reactions.

Resolution: C-
The end of this story bothered me the most. Don’t worry, it has an absolutely happy ending, it’s just too happy I guess thanks to the spontaneous development of conscience by the mastermind behind the entire plot. While I have no problem with bad guys seeing the error of their ways, the ending came off with a cartoon like solution almost as bad as ripping the mask of the mystery monster.

Enthusiasm: A
The delivery of the characters channeled bursts of enjoyment the writer must have had putting this tale to print.

Conclusion:
This writer has some serious skills that could develop into incredible multi-level storytelling abilities. I’d just like to see the stories more streamlined with an obvious direction and less wandering.

I will read more of these books, and more of the writer’s works.

Hi. My name is Hurri Cosmo. I live in Minnesota where I hold tight to the idea that here, where it's cold a good part of the year, I won't age as fast. Yep, I avoid the truth as much as I avoids mirrors. But one of the reasons I love writing is reality doesn't always offer up a "happily ever after" and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Being a happy ending junkie, writing just makes them easier to find. Oh, I doesn't mind "real life" and I do try to at least keep it in mind when I write my stories, but I truly love creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every - single - time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason I love reading this genre, too. Give me a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and my computer, whether I am reading or writing, and I can entertain myself for hours. The fact I actually get paid to do it is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.

WIP it Real Good with UF author Stephanie Mirro + giveaway

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to share the first page of my newest short story, The Morrigan. This story received an Honorable Mention from the Ron L. Hubbard’s Writers of the Future Contest and will be published in an anthology this fall. It’s a Cinderella retelling with Irish mythology mixed in for a dark twist.

One of the reasons I love this story so much is that I sat down and wrote the first draft in 3 days while on Christmas vacation last year. Normally, I’m a bit more of a plotter, so to be able to completely “pants” a story like this kind of blew my mind. I have yet to do it again, though.

Be sure to follow me on social media for the release date of the anthology!

THE MORRIGAN
In two days’ time, life as I knew it would end. It would be the day I had been both dreading and anxiously awaiting for the last five years—the day my stepmother would choose my husband. At best, I would regain a level of freedom I hadn’t experienced since before Father died. At worst, I would become even more a slave than I was today.

“You’ve missed a spot, Lo.” Margaret’s shrill voice interrupted my dark thoughts as I scrubbed the last of the stone floor in the great hall where the gathering would be held. “And another one. And another.” My stepsister’s words punctuated each muddy footprint she left behind on the floor I had just spent the last few hours scrubbing clean. As I sat back on my heels to survey her work, my knees aching, she laughed, throwing back her head of perfectly coiffed brown curls. So unlike my own, even on the best days.

Margaret looked down her hawk-like nose at me. I didn’t have the time or energy to express my anger, so instead I focused on her brown eyes, set too close together, and her lips that were too thin. I knew she wanted to be a beauty, and I knew she wasn’t. At least I wasn’t as daft as she was.

“I guess you’ll just have to do it all again. Better hurry before Mother sees what a mess you’ve made.” She hoisted her pastel skirts up enough for her to kick the bucket of dirty water over the floor. “Oops!”

Her footsteps and laughter receded out the door and down the hall. I’d like to say her behavior was unusual, that she was acting out because I would be married off before the other two—and with a substantial dowry, thanks to Father’s will—but such acts were a daily ritual in my life. As was her nickname for me, “Lo,” which she liked to say referred to my station in life as well as to my given name Eloise.

I wrung out the rag and did my best to sweep the spilled water back over the muddy floor.

I knew I should have barred the doors.

Her Majesty's Fury

EXCERPT:
A few hours later, as sunlight started to drift up over the horizon, a soft scratching sound came from the back door. Renee was still sleeping, so Sera set her cup of coffee on the kitchen table before approaching the door. She pulled the blinds back. A small, dark-skinned boy, who might have been in his early teens, stared back at her.

She gave him a questioning look.

Let us in, let us in, or we’ll blow your house down, a snickering voice echoed around her head.

Who are you? she sent her thought back.

Ah! So the rumors of your Gift are true. Your canine friend talked of a fight? We’re in. She could almost see the grinning smile in the shadows of her mind.

You didn’t answer my question, she said.

I am Eshu. So matter-of-fact, so not what she was looking for.

Sera muttered under her breath. Damn gods.

Stephanie Mirro's lifelong love of ancient mythology led to majoring in the Classics in college, which wasn't quite as much fun as writing her own mythology stories as she did as a child. But that education, combined with an overactive imagination and being an avid fantasy reader, resulted in a writing career.

Starting her days with coffee and ending them with wine means Stephanie can usually be found juggling household chores, keeping the kids alive, and trying to write, edit, publish, and market the stories that haunt her dreams.

Born and raised in Southern Arizona, Stephanie now resides in Northern Virginia with her husband, two kids, and two furbabies. This thing called “seasons” is still magical.

Interview: Cass Morris, author of FROM UNSEEN FIRE + giveaway

Alternate-history and historical fantasy is en vogue for TV and film, as well as books lately. Are there any historical or alternative-historical TV / films / books that influenced your writing?
Cass: Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Legacy series had a major influence on me. I loved the scope of the alternate world she imagined, flavored by the real history of dozens of nations and cultures, but interwoven with her own magical paradigm. I’ve always liked big worlds in the fiction I consume, and hers felt so fully-drawn and complete. That sense of the epic features in a lot of the stories that have influenced me over time -- Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, His Dark Materials, The Sandman, A Song of Ice and Fire -- if it has a massive map and a cast of thousands, I’m probably all for it.

As far as straight-up historical influence goes, HBO’s Rome was playing in the background during a lot of the drafting of From Unseen Fire. The creators of that show said in one of their behind-the-scenes featurettes that they were looking to re-create an authentic ancient Rome, even though they knew they weren’t being completely accurate, since they fudged timelines and merged characters together for storytelling purposes. I think they totally succeeded. Their Rome looked like a real city, so full of people, always busy, and so complex. Those images are definitely a lot of what I had in mind while crafting the city of Aven.

How did you go about researching the setting for FROM UNSEEN FIRE? Did you travel?
Cass: I looked at so. many. maps. Which was great! I love cartography. It’s shockingly difficult to find maps of Rome from the Republic era, though; almost everything is Imperial, because so much of the Forum was destroyed and rebuilt over time, so archaeology has a much easier time figuring out what it looked like in, say, 300 CE than 30 BCE. I also scoured the internet for every picture of reconstructions I could find -- the Getty Villa has some gorgeous images of a reconstructed Roman country house, interior and exterior, and there are a surprising number of Roman legion re-enactment groups. And yes, I did travel. I’d been to Rome once before, as a teenager, and in 2016 I was lucky enough to be able to go back. There’s nothing quite like walking the very hills and streets your characters would have!

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Cass: I’ve been a natural storyteller and a lover of books for as long as I’ve known what words were, but I can remember, clearly, the first moment I knew that creating worlds was what I wanted to do with my life. It was January, 1997. I was eleven years old, sitting in a movie theatre with a sticky floor, having just seen Star Wars for the first time. I was in utter awe. And I thought, “This is it. This is what I want to do.” I don’t know that I even knew what I meant by that at the time, whether writing books or working on movies or some other way of building worlds. That moment, though, was absolutely when I realized that I wanted to spend my life shaping universes that other people could both lose and find themselves in. I’ve been working towards that ever since.

How did participating in NaNoWriMo affect the writing of FROM UNSEEN FIRE?
Cass: My method of Nanoing is highly chaotic. I write whatever scenes occur to me without much worry about how they fit together. As a result, during that initial drafting, I ended up with way more material than was useable. Aside from the things that ended up getting ditched entirely in rewrites or things that got moved from Book One to Books Two and Three, there were also stray plotlines taking place in Abydosia (Egypt) and Armorica (Gaul/France) that I really loved, but which ended up not fitting the main narrative. I was trying to cram too many plotlines into too few pages! So I’ve ended up editing a lot of that out of From Unseen Fire and perhaps from the entire Aven Cycle, but I’m very much hoping I’ll have use for it at some other time.

Who are your biggest writing influences?
Cass: I used to say that I wanted to be Neil Gaiman when I grew up, and that’s still rather true. His writings, and Terry Pratchett’s, have affected a lot of how I think about story and mythos. My ideas on crafting magic have roots in everything from Harry Potter to tabletop role-playing games. Years of studying Shakespeare has put a lot of rhetoric in my head, so that’s been a large influence as well. I’ve also read a lot of romance novels and a lot of historical fiction, and I think those bleed into my style, too.

The Dictator is dead; long live the Republic.

But whose Republic will it be? Senators, generals, and elemental mages vie for the power to shape the future of the city of Aven. Latona of the Vitelliae, a mage of Spirit and Fire, has suppressed her phenomenal talents for fear they would draw unwanted attention from unscrupulous men. Now that the Dictator who threatened her family is gone, she may have an opportunity to seize a greater destiny as a protector of the people -- if only she can find the courage to try.

Her siblings--a widow who conceals a canny political mind in the guise of a frivolous socialite, a young prophetess learning to navigate a treacherous world, and a military tribune leading a dangerous expedition in the province of Iberia--will be her allies as she builds a place for herself in this new world, against the objections of their father, her husband, and the strictures of Aventan society.

Latona's path intersects with that of Sempronius Tarren, an ambitious senator harboring a dangerous secret. Sacred law dictates that no mage may hold high office, but Sempronius, a Shadow mage who has kept his abilities a life-long secret, intends to do just that. As rebellion brews in the provinces, Sempronius must outwit the ruthless leader of the opposing Senate faction to claim the political and military power he needs to secure a glorious future for Aven and his own place in history.

As politics draw them together and romance blossoms between them, Latona and Sempronius will use wit, charm, and magic to shape Aven's fate. But when their foes resort to brutal violence and foul sorcery, will their efforts be enough to save the Republic they love?

Meet Violetta Flame (Phoenix (The Peradon Fantasy Series Book One) by Daccari Buchelli)

Hi everyone, my name is Daccari Buchelli and I write Fantasy novels. I hope you're all having a good week so far. Today, I'd like to share with you the profile of Princess Violetta Flame, the main character of my novel, Phoenix: Book One of The Peradon Fantasy Series.

Meet Violetta Flame

A unique and beautiful young woman that has harboured guilt for too long. Princess Violetta of the Flame Realm has always been fascinated by magic, but her father's strict rules regarding its use have caused her to become wary of it. Violetta is a vibrant soul that yearns to be free, to lead a life that is entirely her own.

Violetta possesses a love of nature like no other. She adores all living things and seeks to find the beauty in everything and everyone. Her hair, like flowing liquid gold, is seen as a precious commodity. With both beauty and brains, she makes other women look plain.

When Stressed, Violetta seeks comfort from the ancient tree that grows on the Flame Palace grounds. It is said to be the place of her birth and has always welcomed her in its embrace.

Although strong, Violetta often feels the pressure to be an example to others, doing her best to keep her feelings in check. When anxious or embarrassed, it is common for the princess to be seen rubbing the skin of her fore arm, though she tends not to notice this peculiar quirk.

Violetta's most treasured possession is an intricately detailed ball that was given to her by family friend and ruler of the Air Realm, Lord Jork. Like her Father Eagan, Violetta possesses a friendly if at times wilful nature and cares deeply about the people of her Realm. Though sometimes shy, this young princess isn't afraid to be blunt on occasion.

Tip: Be warned. There is more to this young lady than meets the eye. As the story progresses, Violetta sheds her shy persona and becomes more fearsome as her magical abilities grow beyond her wildest imaginings.

I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about Violetta. She was one of my favourite characters to write.

No power is greater than the one you’re willing to sacrifice.

Princess Violetta Flame lives her life according to rule, but those rules require her to pay a heavy price. Haunted by a devastating loss, she longs for freedom. When a handsome ruler takes a special interest in her, she senses greater things lie ahead, but behind the handsome façade lies a dark secret – one that can usurp her efforts and cast her back into the life she detested.

The throne was never promised to Emperor Ryore Frost, but now that he has ultimate power, his world is filled with possibilities. Citizens bow at his feet, but their fleeting adoration is no match for his obsession with the young Flame Princess. As his feelings for the staunchly independent princess grow, a new threat emerges, bent on undermining his efforts and betraying his sensibilities.
When past tragedies, malevolent behaviour, and strong wills collide, which will reign supreme?
