Comic Review: A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #7 from Image Comics

A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #7
May 4, 2022
Age Rating: M
Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: André Lima Araújo
Genre: Crime, murder mystery
The problem with hiding is there’s no place to run once you’ve been discovered.

This is the big one. All the trains collide.

A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #7, created by Rick Remender and André Lima Araújo jumps right into the story with Xavier waking to what appears to be an ordinary day. Things take an ominous turn with a mysterious text, and Xavier finds himself on the run. Unfortunately, he runs into the wrong man…or men…or not. When Sonny awakes and finds Xavier missing, he searches frantically for Xavier, but will he be too late?

The artwork has a nice noir feel and does a good job depicting emotion and action. My only issue is with using words like “slash” to depict the sound made from a knife wound, or “kck” to depict a kick to the head. TBH, though, I’m not exactly sure what sound it makes when you stab someone with a knife. The worst I’ve ever done is remove a layer of skin with a vegetable peeler, which really didn’t make much noise at all until I started cursing the potato, the vegetable peeler, and every vegetable within a three-block radius.

There are some unanswered questions (who is Sonny to Xavier and how did they end up together?) and some backstory that was most likely explained in Issues 1-6 (what happened that they’re in a work camp in Hemlock Valley, BC?) but this is definitely not the authors’ fault--I’m the one who chose to jump in with issue 7. I was hooked, though, and I'm Really looking forward to #8. Is Xavier in danger or not? And who wanted him taken? Will Sonny find him before it’s too late, and should Xavier even be with Sonny? Looks like we’ll have to wait and see.

“One of the best horror comics I’ve ever read. Super creepy!”—Josh Williamson (Birthright)

When your twin is the evil half of a dead witch that can control monsters and the undead, a joyful reunion just isn’t in the cards—which means there’s only one option for Emmy: war!

“Harrow County is a masterful creation that lingers in the small moments of terror in our daily lives.”—Bloody Disgusting

Creepy as always. We now see Emmy’s twin sister from the city, Kammi, with her servant wander through the woods and cemetery, searching for the haints and monsters hidden there. Seducing tem to her side. Meanwhile Emmy feels something in her gut that all is wrong. She does chores as she always has done, even though no one now comes for help, hoping the chores will soothe her. But she cannot ignore something is brewing. Something wrong.

Harrow County #7 uses its artwork and colors to draw the reader into feeling the uneasiness as Kammi stalks the unnatural things. The Southern gothic charm hides the rot and fear beneath. The comic series represents the South in a way those not from the area don’t know—weird and spooky, downright creepy.

Review #7/#8
What would happen if in the movie Meatballs, Bill Murray had to fend off a soul-sucking demon bent on devouring the blood of virgins? Well, unless Wes Anderson makes that movie anytime soon, I guess we'll never know. So we're all going to have to settle for the next best thing: Flesh Feast of the Devil Doll.

Renae is heading to private school when the summer's through, but because the school has a field hockey team, she's been shipped to Oneida Feild Hockey Camp to learn the ropes with the rest of the outcast gals. Might not be so bad, but darned if that camp isn't built on top of a satanic ritual site that was massacred by Native Americans. And exploritory fracking has unearthed the demon those silly Satanists were trying to raise in the first place.

The good news is that the demon has a pretty face. The bad news is that the demon has a second not-so-pretty face that it uses to chomp on its victims as soon as it seduces them. Or it's just really hungry.

So on a slow night with the girls stepping out, they wind up in a no-holds-barred showdown with the demon, and it's just terrific.

If you loved all those schlocky B-movies about summer camp from the 80s, and also have a penchant for those gruesome Satanic cult conspiracies from the same era, you're probably gonna love this two-parter as much as I did.

If there's a character that steals the show, it's not Renae. It's not even the demon. It's Tina, the cool-as-shit leader of the pack with her collar tee and aviator shades. She's the ambassador and head buttkicker for the gang of gals, and pretty much the queen bee. And no boys allowed, either. The topless pie fight should be a big giveaway there.

It's campy, yes. Pun intended. But it has some serious chills too, because that demon is scary as hell. Sure, the idea that these field hockey players are all too eager and apparently all too ready throw down with hellspawn strains credulity, but just remember the genre this thing is paying homage to while you're reading.

Throw in some very crisp--and at times icky--artwork from Gary Erskine, and Alex de Campi has a real winner with this one.

Comic Review: Quantum and Woody! Issues #5-7

*giggle…snort…giggle* This comic series is just so over the top you can’t help but love it. Eric (Quantum) and Woody are now living together so their atoms don’t fall apart. Woody brought along his girlfriend, a clone of an evil villain, and a goat with special powers. Eric just wants to get back to his old life, but he gets tricked and blackmailed into helping an evil religious cowboy. Lucky for Eric, his brother Woody takes a break from being the world’s biggest douchebag to help save the day.

If you like inappropriate humor, politically incorrect snarky dialogue mixed with crime fighting superhero action and goats, then give this one a look. The covers pretty much explain it all, but I included some panels.
