HE'LL DO ANYTHING FOR HER

Former Special Forces Lieutenant Jayson Harmon can't believe that his war scars don't matter to beautiful feline shifter Layla Halliwell. Why would she saddle herself with a broken man?

But Layla knows that Jayson is a hero to the core, and that only she can heal his wounded soul. So when Jayson is deployed on another deadly mission, no way is Layla staying behind.

I don’t know how Paige Tyler keeps writing such interesting stories but I hope she doesn’t stop with this series. Basically, Layla and Jayson have been in a relationship for a while but while shifter Layla sees nothing but the best when she looks at Jayson, he looks in the mirror and sees a battle scarred invalid that can’t even hold the woman he’s falling for without feeling pain. So when the opportunity comes up to change his fate, Jayson snatches it and goes on a dangerous mission to prove he can handle being by Layla’s side and in her life.

I have been waiting for Layla and Jayson’s story for a while now and I am glad to say it didn’t disappoint! I wanted to know how Jayson was going to overcome his insecurities and bitterness with his physical limitations and I felt that Tyler did a great job of making him work through all of it in a timely manner. They didn’t just “poof” into thin air, it was definitely a process that had its setbacks and its rewards but without sacrificing Jayson’s hidden sense of humor or emasculating him in the process. Out of all the heroes in this series, I felt like Jayson was the most dashing of them all. Maybe it’s just because I have a soft spot for wounded combat soldiers but I loved him.

But I can’t forget Layla who makes one heck of a heroine. She’s been a background character for so long that she kind of faded away and now that she was in the spotlight she had a lot to prove. She had a sister who didn’t want her in the field and a boyfriend who thought he wasn’t good enough for her. Not to mention more than a few baddies out to eradicate her kind. But even though she was a butt kicking shifter, Layla’s most defining trait was her patience. Where most women would have had it out with Jayson for his hot and cold moods, Layla was ever patient and loyal. She wasn’t a doormat but she wasn’t without empathy either. She was just this really cool balance of bad ass shifter and loving girlfriend. She and Jayson were great together.

Her Rogue Alpha like its predecessors makes sure to have previous characters drop in and sometimes play a small part in the current story but they never take over scenes and they don’t stay long. Paige Tyler makes sure that the readers’ focus is entirely on the main characters for that story and on the ever growing plot that centers around the shifters and the villains who are looking to engineer their own brand of animal shifter. I have always enjoyed these books and this one was no exception. There was heat, humor, and heart in it which is so important for a romance. All in all another solid foray into adventure and danger with two characters who had been building something special in the background of the previous books and now find themselves at a crossroads in their relationship.
