Reflections of Writing an Entire Series
By Joann H. Buchanan

There are two words that hold an entire array of emotions for an author. THE END.

When I wrote those two words at the end of After Dark, book 3 of The Children of Nox, I was filled with joy, love, pain and remorse. There are some books that take us on a journey of self-discovery and force us to dig deep into our own psyche. This series was one of them for so many reasons. To begin with, I wasn’t sure I could finish it when I started it. I didn’t know where the characters would take me. I didn’t know how the story was going to end and I didn’t know who would live or die.

What I did know was I had to finish it. There was something inside me that wouldn’t let me leave it alone. Maybe it was because I wanted to know how it would end. That might actually be the whole reason I was able to finish it. When I finished, I had to figure out who to dedicate it to. That actually was the easy part. I dedicated it to my dad. He taught me the most important lesson I’ve ever had in life…keep moving forward. I knew the only reason this series was completed was because of him. I wanted my dad to see those words and know I made it through this journey because of his wisdom and guidance in life.

On reflection, I’m proud of what I have accomplished. I finished. I wrote the words THE END. In a lot of ways this was more a relief than anything else. After all, I started the series unsure about everything except the what if factor and a vague notion of wolves.

The heart of this series is literally about not giving up. It’s a life lesson that I feel is important and one that allows the dreams in all of us to become a reality. We all have those what if questions in our lives. They can sometimes lead us to great and terrible places. What they don’t do is leave us in the same place we began. That I think is important.

This series taught me two things.

I could write a series

The only thing I had to do was let go and write. My advice to anyone who is working on a task that feels overwhelming is simply this.

Take it one word at a time and don’t worry about the rest. It will come. That is my reflection…my realization.

I’m left now with the question of if I did my job. Did I entertain you? Did the world I created make you step away from yours for a while and take you away? I await the answer and hope I did. The Children of Nox is more than a story of wolves. It is filled with love, laughter, heartache and pain. It will hopefully fill you with awe while scaring you at the same time. It was intended to reach beyond what we are and what we could be. If I did my job then it does.

Thank you for reading it and for taking the journey with me. Don’t forget to howl at the moon when it is full. Maybe you will be able to run with the Youngling Pack.

“You can’t fight who you really are, Jonah . . .you are wolf.”

When Jonah unknowingly creates an unnatural creature, he is thrust upon a path of unremitting shadows and unrelenting torment from the creature he becomes connected to. In stark contrast, seven teens, the youngling pack from the tribe of Tibolt, join forces with Jonah, their newest member. Together, they must stop the “unnatural,” who brings horror wherever he travels. As the murderous creature makes his way east to Tennessee, it becomes a race against time to save a small child of destiny known as the Dream Maker. Will Jonah reach her before the creature is able to turn her for his evil purposes?
