Excerpts: Stealing Jia (Coletti Warlord Series Book 13) by Gail Koger + giveaway

Stealing Jia (Coletti Warlord Series Book 13)
by Gail Koger
November 16, 2020
157 pages
Genre: SciFi Romance, Humor
Jia grew up in an orphanage that turned children into master thieves and gave the school of hard knocks a run for its money. Jia’s psychic talents have kept her alive, but not out of trouble. While searching for her adopted brother, Jia finds herself on a galactic adventure with a horde of extra-terrestrial kids she’s determined to protect. Adding to the chaos is an Askole Battle Commander who claims she is his mate. How is that even possible? They’ve never met.

Trayon, the Battle Commander, is a deadly Askole. Huge. Battle hardened muscles. A regular warrior’s nightmare with black, armor-plated skin and tentacles. Who knew the scary guy was such an excellent kisser and had the heart of a romantic? All Jia ever wanted was a family of her own. Maybe an alien family wouldn’t be so bad.

To win Jia, Trayon must prove he loves her and she’s not some female the Coletti Overlord just sold him. But first, he has to keep the trouble magnet alive long enough to convince her.

Stealing Jia Excerpt
I frowned as I stepped into the restaurant. The only light came from the numerous candles decorating the tables. The darkness and the access to the catacombs was a little too handy. Was Giovanni planning another kidnapping? If so, he had picked the wrong girl to mess with.

Like a wraith, Giovanni appeared out of the darkness. His white silk suit could double as a lab coat. “My darling, I am so glad you came.” With a bow, he handed me a single red rose.

“How could I resist someone who loves to Tango as much as I do.” I took the rose gingerly. A funny chemical smell emanated from the flower. “Thank you. It’s beautiful.”

“It’s a simple gift from my garden. The unique fragrance stimulates the senses. Take a deep breath and you will see what I mean,” Giovanni said, watching me carefully.

The chemicals tickled my nose. Ker-choo! Ker-choo! Ker-choo! Ker-choo!

Giovanni recoiled in disgust as I sneezed repeatedly in his face.

“Oh dear, I’m so sorry. I’m allergic to flowers.”

His wiped his face off and gritted, “It matters not.”

“Truly?” I snagged the red silk hankie from his lapel pocket and blew my nose vigorously. The expression on his face when I handed it back to him was priceless.

Giovanni dropped the offending hankie on a passing waiter’s tray.

I stuffed the stinky rose into his lapel pocket. “Much better.”

Faith Hunter Shatter Bonds Tour: Of Cats and Cars PART 2 + giveaway

Of Cats and Cars—a story of Beast, copyright Faith Hunter: Part Two

Edmund went preternaturally still.

Jane wasn’t stupid. Or unfair. He had a brilliant idea. He hoped. “One cow?” he asked, meeting the golden eyes, drawing on his mesmeric abilities. He had no idea if they would even work on the cat since they didn’t work on Jane, but when his Maserati was in danger, he would use all his wiles. “I have a … counter proposal,” he said, as if musing. “In return for not using my car, I offer this. The hunt shall be for two bovines with … with trees their heads, or bison, or even wildebeest, whichever Alex can locate to the west of us in Texas. This proposed hunt will take place in wild country, far from humans. And, should you agree to my terms, it will occur from the back of a Hummer—a large, tall vehicle set high off the ground used for hunting.”

The Cat pricked her ears. Her purring stopped. She stared back at him with a predator’s hungry intensity. She didn’t try to tear off his face so he continued.

“I propose a luxury Hummer, with no top. A Hummer that can go overland at speeds that will rival the longhorn or the bison. Forty-eight hours on the ranch. Forty-eight hours to hunt, though only the animals agreed upon. No horses, no pets, no humans, no prey accept the two bovines. In a Hummer.”

The cat chuffed softly. She was watching him from two inches away, her whispers barely moving on his cheeks.

“All this will be in return for removing my car from ever being considered again. And … we will also fly there and back in the Lear jet,” he added.

The cat blinked, considering, her golden eyes on him as if he were a squirrel she might chase for fun. She chuffed again, harder, blowing her blood-stench breath in his face.

“That means she’s interested,” Eli said helpfully.

“Her interest is not enough,” Ed said. “This will be a rock-solid deal. A trip to Texas in the Lear, a hunt for two bovines, preferably wild, from a luxury model, modified hunting Hummer, over the course of forty-eight hours. And my car forever removed from the bargaining table.”

The cat released the pinprick of her claws and tapped his neck three times.

“Three bovines? No. We don’t have enough space even in the Council Chamber’s freezers for that much meat and we will not be hunting simply for hunting sake. We eat what we hunt or I will remove the offer from the table.”

The cat looked at him with adoration. She liked that statement. Interesting. But then, predators were carful to protect their meat and food sources. Historically, vampires knew that problem quite well. His kind had decimated hunting ranges before, leaving human carcasses and no food sources for miles around.

The cat tapped his neck three times, insistent, pushing. As cats are wont to do.

“No. The butchering and shipping of three massive longhorns or bison would be problematic. Two bovines. That is my offer. From the back of a Hummer. An all-night hunt with me, and then if you have not brought enough prey, an all-day hunt guided by Eli and Alex.”

“Hey! I’m not spending all day in the hot sun in a Hummer for your hunt,” Alex said.

Breast growled low, the vibration moving through Ed and the air in clear threat.

Eli chuckled. “I’m in. I’d like to bring down a meat animal or two, if we can find something interesting. I understand that some ranches in Texas cater to hunters. Maybe red stag or Scimitar Horned Oryx.”

“What if Beast misses and doesn’t get a cow?” Alex asked, taunting, laughing, watching them beneath his springy curls. He might be technically an adult but he was still annoyingly childishly human at times. “I mean, do you have to keep hunting to find another wild cow? She might miss and then we’d be back to your car.”

The cat turned her head to Alex and snarled silently.

“Sorry,” Alex said quickly. “Right. You don’t miss. My bad.”

The cat tapped twice with her right paw, agreeing to the hunt, or that was Ed’s interpretation.

“I think you got a deal,” Eli said.

She removed her claws, paws, and forelegs from Ed’s neck and dropped slowly to the floor. She stretched, in one of those positions used in yoga by humans. Casually, the Puma concolor strolled to Alex’s table-desk where his various tablets, laptops, and paraphernalia were piled. Fast as a vampire she struck. Knocked a stack of tablets to the floor with a clatter of breaking plastic.

“Hey! What’s that for?” Alex demanded as she dropped her paw and strolled back to the kitchen. Her tail swished in satisfaction.

“I believe it was in response to impugning her valor and her skill as a hunter,” Ed said.

“Not the smartest thing you ever said, my brother,” Eli agreed.

“Dang cat,” Alex grumbled under his breath as he dropped to the floor in a squat and picked through the broken electronics. But Ed heard the irritation and so did the cat. She looked entirely too pleased with herself.

“Alex, would you be so kind as to search your databases for a ranch I might lease or rent for two days? One with wild longhorn cattle, bison or wildebeest?”

Alex looked up from his position on the floor and grimaced. “And I guess you want me to make the reservations and find you a Hummer she can jump out of to hunt? And then make sure the Lear is ready to flay and get you a pilot and a flight crew? What am I? Your personal tour reservations staff?”

“No,” Ed said, hiding his amusement. “You pointed out that the cat creature is the Dark Queen. You are the business partner to the Dark Queen. And she wants to go hunting.”

Alex muttered again, cursing under his breath. Edmund smiled, the motion barely there, and pulled his cell phone to finalize shipping his Maserati to France. He had just successfully negotiated a contract with a predator who could kill a vampire. How much harder could it be to negotiate with the warring Masters of the Cities of Europe as their Emperor?

Then he looked down. His hand-made suit was covered in cougar fur.

Scowling, Ed and rose to climbed the stairs to his rooms to shower and dress in clean clothing. He stank of cat.

***

Beast breathed out. Chuffed. Had left much hair and scent on Edmund. Had claimed Edmund. Watched as Ed walked up stairs. Loved Ed. Loved Ed more-than-five. Wanted Ed as mate. Ed and Bruiser and Gregoire.

Jane would be mad.

***

Beast did not want to fly. Did not like to fly with wings. Did not like to fly in belly of plane. Wanted to be on ground with paws in dirt. But had only two days to hunt. Wanted to hunt in Texas. Had to fly.

Beast did not climb steps up to Lear, one-two-three and more-than-five, but leaped from ground up high, inside plane-door, to plane-floor. Human male at plane-door made mouse-squeak as Beast landed beside him. Smelled of fear and sweat and a little of urine. Beast chuffed. Walked inside belly of plane. Lapped at large water bowl. Smelled at small refrigerator. Ed’s and Jane’s plane smelled of Jane and dead cow and fresh cow roast. Decided was good plane. Beast padded to big chairs and climbed into dead-cow-skin-chair smelling of Jane. Put head down. Closed eyes. Yawned. Smelled Edmund and Eli and Alex come into plane. Went to sleep.

***
Their hunting group landed at the San Antonio International Airport after dark had fallen. They were escorted through back hallways so no one would panic seeing a cougar lose and free and, “Start a stampede.” Those were the words used by the chief of security when Edmund greased the way forward with a single large bill. He had brought a goodly number of them for just such reasons.

The driver of the luxury, topless Hummer with its elevated rows of seats had been less sanguine at the sight of Beast’s fangs, and had nearly swallowed his tobacco. It had taken a much smaller bill and only a slight pull with his vampire abilities to calm the man and implant a suggestion that the Puma was actually a large dog, for him to become agreeable. And talkative. Sam was a grizzled older cowboy who walked with a limp from an injury, and who was likely hired for his good-ol-boy attitude, his Western cowboy attire, the “chaw,” as Alex called it, and his stories. They secured their luggage to the back of the flat bed of the Hummer and took places inside.

Chattering at the top of his lungs to be heard over the engine and the wind noise, Sam drove them out of town, into the countryside. Edmund had forgotten how stunning the night sky was when city lights fell behind them, the stars a wash of brilliance above them, the moon a waning orb on the horizon. He breathed in the night air of desert country. It was spicy with trees and plants he couldn’t identify and rich with the scent of life—rattlesnake, rat, lizards by the hundreds, insects, rabbits, and father away, the scent of larger prey, animals he had no name for except bovine, goat, and predator cat, perhaps bobcat or lynx. Though he had traveled well, he never been to this part of the states, preferring the cities and their well-stocked hunting grounds, human culture, museums and music and theater.

Bu this … this was a sensory overload of a different sort. He felt his body relaxing as all the tension of war plans, travel plans to Europe, the pressure of schedules and conflict and meetings and duels began to slip away. He lounged back in his seat, and he didn’t even worry when the cat leaned against him, getting cat hair all over him.

Beast leaned against Edmund. Scent of Ed was all over Beast. Scent of Beast was all over Ed. Beast loved Ed. Beast did not love Sam. Sam talked. Sam talked all time. Beast was not sure that Sam took breaths between words. Sam was stringy and hard and smelled of chemicals and tobacco and alcohol that Eli called whisky. Sam would not taste good, but Beast might hunt Sam anyway to make Sam stop talking.

Book Review: Summoned to Thirteenth Grave (Charley Davidson Book 13) by Darynda Jones (no spoilers)

Summoned to Thirteenth Grave (Charley Davidson Book 13)
by Darynda Jones
January 15, 2019

Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Pages: 304
Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper extraordinaire, is pissed. She’s been kicked off the earthly plane for eternity –which is exactly the amount of time it takes to make a person stark, raving mad. But someone’s looking out for her, and she’s allowed to return after a mere hundred years in exile. Is it too much to hope for that not much has changed? Apparently it is. Bummer.

She’s missed her daughter. She’s missed Reyes. She’s missed Cookie and Garrett and Uncle Bob. But now that she’s back on earth, it’s time to put to rest burning questions that need answers. What happened to her mother? How did she really die? Who killed her? And are cupcakes or coffee the best medicine for a broken heart? It all comes to a head in an epic showdown between good and evil in this final smart and hilarious novel.

Charley has been exiled from the earthly plane forever but for some unknown reason, she is allowed to return after only a hundred plus years in exile. She has missed everyone while she was gone, and she has so many questions about what has happened, how her mother died, if there is still coffee?

In the final saga, Jones has pulled out all the stops. One of the best-written books to date and still as funny as ever! She has filled the final book with so many surprises you cannot even begin to fathom what will happen. This was truly a tribute to the Charley Davidson series that would make any author or reader proud. Since there were a few things that were not finished, I really hope that there are plans in the works for the next series by Jones.

Old dogs tell no tales.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Victoria Danann, brings a moving triumph-over-darkness story to the world of Black Swan.

The Hawking family is at home at the Northern Ireland farm and wolf-dog kennel for Yuletide when Blackie goes missing. Instead of a joyous celebration of family and friends, Ram's mate and elflings are beside themselves with fear and worry. As Song and Litha bring their respective paranormal abilities to aid in the search, the story takes a turn into the dark world of dogfighting and the abduction of adult male dogs matching the profile of fighters.

Black Swan rarely gets involved in the mundane affairs of the world because it's not their purpose, mission, or directive. But when Simon's office is drowned in messages from retired knights insisting that Blackie is unofficially one of them and that an exception must be made, he relents and orders available personnel to assist B Team with a rundown.

Blackie climbed the hill to his favorite spot. He didn’t trot or run, as he’d been known to do in his younger days. He ambled, telling himself that he could trot or run if he was so inclined. He just didn’t feel like it that minute.

The hill above the Laiken kennel and farm had the very best view of the surroundings. When he was there he could imagine himself to be protector of all he surveyed; his people, the land, the wolf dogs.

There’d been a light snow the day before, but the morning’s bright sun had melted a small clearing that formed a patch of bright green grass. Bright sun was unusual in northern Ireland at that time of year, but dogs don’t analyze changes in weather or atmospheric conditions. They simply accept what is and adapt as best they can. When the sun shines warm on old bones, they accept it.

After turning in a circle three times around the patch of green, Blackie sunk down into a sphinx pose and indulged himself in a satisfied sigh.

It’s impossible to know what dogs do or do not remember. Perhaps he had crystal clear memories of his adoption by The Order of the Black Swan and recalled every detail of every adversity and adventure. Perhaps there was a vague recollection of his history. Who can say?

He sat on the hill overseeing his farm. Perhaps old dogs do what old people do. They divide their reveries between recollection and remorse. Because even the best of us, human or dog, could have done things better. If there was an exception to that, it would be Blackie. Because he had never failed to give his whole heart and effort to any given task in any given moment. Surely dogs as smart as Blackie are like humans, recalling this corner of a moment or that fragment of a song at odd and inexplicable times.

To Helm, Blackie was as constant as was the idea of his father, Sir Rammel Aelshelm Hawking, Black Swan Knight Emeritus and Prince of Ireland, and his mother, Lady Elora Laiken, Black Swan Knight Emeritus, former Princess of Britannia, Stagsnare Dimension.

Perhaps his earliest memory was a black muzzle shoved between the bars of his baby bed resting on the sheet-covered mattress, intelligent brown eyes full of light and staring at him intently like he was the most precious thing in the universe. At fourteen he’d never confronted the prospect of surviving Blackie. He’d never considered it and simply couldn’t imagine the world without the big black dog.

byJohn Conroe
January 20, 2018
Pages: 509
Demon Accords book 13. Faced with writing college papers, prepping for tests, and teaching testy witches, Declan O'Carroll has enough on his plate. Not to mention the withdrawal of leaving his very own magical kingdom behind on Fairie. But when he and his friends are attacked from creatures out of folklore and fable it seems the Queens of Summer and Winter aren't done with him yet. But if they're so eager to mess with Earth, maybe it's time Earth came to them. After all, he's got some lessons to teach.

Declan has his plate full with college, teaching, his girlfriend, saving the world and being the holder of a realm on Fairie. Declan, Chris and Stacia decide to take the fight to Fairie when both the Queens of Summer and Winter decide to attack him on Earth.

Declan is one of kind; he’s a powerful witch, he’s down to earth, he’s loyal and he is super smart. The young man can figure out things in the witch world that the most experienced witch can’t even wrap their mind around. The relationship between Declan and Stacia is a powerful one. Stacia and her inner wolf have claimed Declan as their mate and Declan is head over heels in love with her. Between Stacia and Declan’s AI, Omega the kid is protected from every angle.

The Demon Accords series is one of my favorite series and one worth investing your time and money in reading if you aren’t already a loyal fan. The next book in the series will focus on the untold stories of some of the other characters in the series and then Conroe will be back to the main story.

A snow leopard shifter in the prime of his life, the last thing on August’s mind is tying himself to one female. He welcomes a different one to his bed each night, or at least he had until five months ago when he became alpha. Promised at birth to a male she has never met, Maya has left her pride behind to go to the tiger alpha who is to be her mate, but she can’t leave without saying goodbye to her older brother, Talon. A stop in London at Underworld to see him one last time turns out far different, and far more dangerous, than how she had imagined it when she sets eyes on an alluring crimson-haired stranger who stirs new, unbidden feelings in her, desires that rouse her fiercest and most frightening instincts and demand she stake a claim on him—her fated mate.

Will Maya be strong enough to place her pride and her family’s safety before the desires of her own heart? And will August unravel his feelings for the black-haired beauty before it’s too late and he loses her forever?

REVIEW
Turned By A Tiger and Tamed By A Tiger are the two most recent installments in Felicity Heaton’s Eternal Mates series, a paranormal romance series spanning time, dimension, and a whole host of paranormal factions. The ‘tiger’ books are a bit of a miniseries within the larger set with a third tiger book expected later this summer. I am relatively new to the Eternal Mates series having begun with Haunted by the King of Death, Eternal Mates #11. While I imagine reading the entire series may enhance the experience, I have found that Heaton does an excellent job bringing her readers up to speed. I’m of the opinion that these books can be read as standalone novels or as part of the larger series.

Turned and Tamed are both written in the tradition of ‘mates at first sight’. While some of the romantic tension is diffused with this type of storyline, there is still plenty of angst and numerous obstacles standing in the way of a romantic happily ever after. Class struggles, race differences, family expectations, rival lovers, war, mayhem, and just plain miscommunication abound. Both books follow the romantic trials and tribulations of a shifter tiger pride’s ruling family; siblings who have been taught that pride duty and honor supersede personal interest. Both books were quick, fun, engaging reads.

Heaton boasts an incredible catalogue of paranormal romance writing with several standalone novels as well as ongoing series. I’m also enjoying another Heaton series, Guardians of Hades. While the foundational plotlines of her books don’t vary greatly, Heaton’s writing is imaginative and sexy as hell. You can be assured, when reading a Heaton novel, that you will be entertained from start to finish. If you’re a fan of paranormal romance, Heaton is a definite must read author. While formulaic, her books are tight, well-written stories; true guilty pleasures.

Excerpt from Tamed by A Tiger

Rain hammered down outside the window of the taxi, catching the colourful lights of the city and shimmering, and making the cars parked along the road glisten. It was strange.

August couldn’t remember the last time he had seen rain.

Snow, yes.

Endless snow.

But not rain.

How long had it been since he had left the pride village high in the mountains and ventured down into the mortal world?

Years?

He leaned his right arm on the plastic that framed the bottom of the window, sighed and stared out into the night. At the rain. At the people. So many people.

The hour was late, but London was alive and buzzing.

Back home, high up in the mountains, it would be silent by now, the peace rarely broken by the sound of a roar from down in the valley as one of the big cats found prey or crossed paths with a rival.

Gods, he had always found it too quiet.

He had taken to filling the silence of the night with the song of females in his bed, their cries chasing away that dreadful quiet and bringing life and light into the darkness.

How long had it been since he had done that?

Too long.

After Cavanaugh had left the pride in his hands five months ago, he had been doing his best to run it and be a good alpha to everyone.

It was far harder than it had looked.

He closed his eyes, shutting out the busy and entrancing mortal world, and that magical rain, and huffed.

He had trade negotiations with a neighbouring pride in a little over a week and he didn’t have a fucking clue what that entailed, and asking Dalton, his second in command hadn’t helped. When he had grown the balls to ask him, Dalton had looked as lost as he felt. They were both learning this shit as they went along, making half of it up and hoping what they did was right, and what the pride expected.

Keeping his people happy, he could do, and had been doing well.

But dealing with land rights and trade of goods between prides?

He could wing the basics, but he couldn’t risk doing that with something as important as those two things. If he screwed up the impending negotiations, the pride would probably want him out, and he couldn’t allow that. He was the only heir to the position of alpha, which meant there would either be a fight between the strongest males in the pride to see who would take his place, or the pride would call upon a former alpha.

Cavanaugh.

His cousin had been raised to be an alpha, while August had been raised to play a supporting role.

Had he made a mistake by accepting Cavanaugh’s offer?

Had he been out of his mind to think he could be an alpha?

He wanted his cousin to be happy though, and the damned idiot would have stuck with tradition if he had taken back the mantle of alpha, making it impossible for him to be with his mate, and beloved, Eloise, because she was born of the lower ranks in the pride.

So August had stepped in like some fucking hero.

Who was the idiot now?

He flicked his eyes open and watched the world whizz past, listening to the background noise of the driver’s radio, the methodical clunk of the windscreen wipers and the whoosh of the tyres as they cut through the water on the road.

Still, Cavanaugh was with Eloise at last, and for better or worse, August was in charge of the pride.

It should have been grand.

Alphas were never short of female company, which was exactly the way he liked things.

Only life had a way of kicking him in the balls.

Sure, he had three prides trying to palm off females onto him, and several of the high-ranking females in his own pride making valiant attempts to bed him.

But now he didn’t have time for that shit.

Or the inclination.

Gods, he missed the old days. He would have bedded them all, maybe more than one at a time, using them to chase back that chilling silence of the night when his thoughts travelled paths he didn’t like, leaving him feeling cold inside, strangely empty.

He would have had his fill of them, used them to keep his bed warm all hours of the day and night, just like many of the pride’s alphas before him.

Hell, he had thought it would be a perk of the position, had imagined himself rolling in more females than ever, at least double the number he had used to invite into his bed.

Now, he had no lack of females who wanted him, but no desire to do anything with them.

His life had truly gone to Hell.

The stress of running the pride had him awake most nights, poring over documents and tearing his hair out as he tried to figure out what to do about the thousand issues and projects piled up on his desk, and busy every hour of the day, taking visits from members of the pride and hearing their problems.

His every moment, every breath, was dedicated to getting the pride back on their feet. It had been five months to the day since he had helped Cavanaugh defeat Stellan to free the pride of his vicious tyranny and had taken over leadership in Cavanaugh’s stead.

Five fucking months.

He hadn’t had the energy to even think about sex in that time, let alone actually do it.

And to top it all off, someone had started the rumour that he was sleeping with Dalton.

Like hell he was.

Dalton was a good male, and one hell of a looker, and always had his back, but neither of them swung that way.

The only reason August hadn’t crushed that rumour was because Dalton was seeing a female from the lowest ranks, and if their families found out, they would probably castrate him and castigate her.

No way he was going to let his best friend take the hit like that just because he was bucking tradition. August was behind him one hundred percent, would do whatever it took to help them be together, just as he had for Cavanaugh. He never had been cool with some snow leopard traditions.

Now he was caught up in them himself. As alpha, he could bed all the lowborn females he wanted, but he was expected to pick from the highborn or somehow find his fated one among the elite, the snow leopard female who had been made for him, if he ever chose to settle down.

If.

August had no intention of doing such a thing.

He sighed. Dalton would probably leap at the chance to settle down with the female he was seeing. It was obvious his friend loved her. The male pined for her when they were apart, and couldn’t keep his eyes off her when the pride were celebrating something and everyone was gathered in the square of the village.

August should have turned him down when he had offered himself as his second in command. Maybe then Dalton could have found a way to be with his female. Now, because of his elevated position, he was expected to choose a female from within his own social sphere.

He couldn’t do this without Dalton though.

His friend was indispensable, kept him sane when he was losing his mind, and pulled him up whenever he tripped and fell. He was more than a right hand man. He was vital.

So vital that August had left the pride in his capable hands while he flew halfway across the world to London.

August hated to admit it, but it felt fucking good to be away from the pride and his responsibilities there.

He hadn’t come all the way here for pleasure though. He had come on business.

The business of saving his arse.

He looked up at the redbrick warehouse to his right as the taxi pulled up outside it, at the bright neon sign that hung above thick steel doors.

Underworld.

August slipped the driver his money, grabbed his duffle bag and opened the door. He stepped out onto the wet tarmac, slammed the door and stared up at the sign as the car pulled away, leaving him alone in the night, rain pouring down on his face.

Damn, it felt good.

Cleansing.

He closed his eyes and let it wash over him, let it carry away some of his nerves.

The doors of the club opened and laughter burst around him, and he watched the two females staggering away, heading towards the main road.

He eased inside the nightclub in one fluid motion before the door closed, not touching it, and stilled in the darkness. The twenty-foot-wide corridor opened out a short distance ahead of him into a huge space. Flashing colourful lights stuttered across the black wooden bar that ran along the right black wall of the club, and the dance floor that filled the rest of the space to the left. It was still busy, close to one hundred people writhing against each other to a heavy rock beat. Halfway up the height of the building, a balcony ran around three sides of the dance floor, only absent above the bar. A few couples were making out up in the booths he could see, and more than one of the enclosed spaces had the curtain drawn across to give the occupants some privacy.

Cool air washed over him, and his nerves vanished, his head growing a little light as he breathed it in. What was in the air conditioning vents? Whatever it was, it was good.

He drifted towards the bar, suddenly feeling mellow and as if he didn’t have a care in the world. The pride? Not a problem. Trade negotiations? Whatever.

A low growl sounded ahead of him.

It rankled a little, and he instinctively flashed fangs, although he wasn’t sure where the threat was coming from.

There were a lot of different species in the club, and he smelled more than one shifter.

And also the shifter he had come to see.

“Sherry, check on the boss,” Cavanaugh’s deep voice rang through the room, cutting through the thumping music.

A pretty blonde of indiscernible breeding bounced along the bar towards him, bringing his gaze with her, and he frowned when she stopped and his eyes settled on the one who had threatened him.

A big, very pissed off looking, male with tousled short sandy hair and enough muscle packed beneath his white shirt to make it clear August wouldn’t win in a fight against him.

At least not in his human form anyway.

The male’s golden eyes glowed, his face in shadow as lights twirled above him, shifting colour.

“Kyter?” The one called Sherry touched his shoulder and he snarled at her. She snatched her hand back, looked over her shoulder, and hollered, “You deal with it. I dealt with him last time!”

Cavanaugh set a tall glass down in front of a male at the bar, heaved a sigh and turned towards him.

Froze.

Sheep Book Review: Wild About You by Kerrelyn Sparks

Wild About You, by Kerrelyn Sparks, is the 13th book in her PNR series Love at Stake. I'm not only a fan of this series but a fan of this author as well, and while Howard has always been a lovable background character I had some reservations about him being our leading man.

Plot:

It's not every day that Elsa Bjornberg feels delicate, not when she hosts a home renovation show where she can effortlessly demolish a kitchen. But from the moment she meets Howard Barr, this bear of a man makes her feel like a woman. And the way he looks at her, as if she were a pot of honey he'd like to lick . . .

Howard is not like most men. For one thing, he's a shapeshifter. And he always thought his celebrity crush would never amount to anything more than drooling at Elsa on TV. When his meddling vampire employer gets involved, the star is suddenly within his grasp—and within a hair of her life. For an ancient curse forbids their newfound love, and Howard is suddenly torn between his desire for her and his desire to keep her alive.

A few years back I was roaming the aisles of Borders (Back when they were still around) looking for something awesome to read. I happened to bump into a novel by Sparks and thought "why not", I am so glad that I gave this series a try. It's been one of the most rewarding reading experiences in my PNR collection. Each book has some of the most diverse characters I've ever met, and vivid stories that feel realistic. The paranormal world, for me, is a fun one to get into and Sparks does a superb job selling the reality and fantasy in her works.

So here we are with Howard, the teddy bear who is head of security at Romatech Industries. I was curious how Sparks was going to work this one out but yet again she pulls out her bucket of tricks and makes it magic happen. Howard, in previous stories, was not a heart throb by any means but when she explains why and how he's transformed some in the physical appearance it works. This guy's throwing the bear claw doughnuts back like nobody's business.

Our leading girl Elas steps onto the scene with her hammer and demo crew in tow, the Mrs Fix-it gal who's also the host of a hit TV show. I liked that she wasn't a small waif of a thing with beautifully styled hair and manicured nails. She's a real gal with her own beauty and a perfect fit for Howard.

What I didn't like in this whole love story was the wham-bam romance. A lot of build up goes on throughout the story but when it comes time for the hot and heavy, Howard is impatient and almost in a hurry, like he has somewhere else to be. Slow down dude, Romatech will be fine without you for a few days buddy.

That being said, I enjoyed all the other aspects of this story. The back story of the bears to present day was fascinating, and the comedy worked in always brings a smile to my face! Plus all the build up with the Dougal bits, loved it! This is one to read for fans of the series and someone just walking in!
