Book Review: Bloodchild: QuickSilver Codex Book 3 by Kallysten

Bloodchild: QuickSilver Codex Book 3
by Kallysten
Pages: 204
Five days. That’s how long Vivien has to prepare for the first of three magic duels against Rhuinn, the usurper king of Foh’Ran. She challenged him to the duels not because she wants the throne, although it is her birthright, but because she blames him for the death of Brad – one of her bodyguards, and the man she loves.

Except that Brad is alive again… or the next best thing. His brother Aedan, rather than losing him, broke all customs and made him a vampire like himself, a decision that might cost him dearly when his own Maker confronts him.

Vivien’s joy over not losing Brad, however, might have to be hampered when Aedan’s disapproval of their relationship takes a new turn. Brad’s new vampire instincts are strong, and his hunger for blood is hard – if not impossible – to control. The two brothers swore an oath to protect Vivien, but one of them might be the greatest threat to her safety… at least for the next five days…

It’s time for to fight for her right to the throne. When she thought she had lost Brad forever she challenged Rhuinn to a duel. She now has three duels to face Rhiunn in to try to regain the throne, which is her birthright. She is over joyed when she finds out that Brad isn’t dead just a vampire. Her joy is quickly turned to sorrow when she finds out all the things that have changed between the two of them.

Vivien and Brad’s love is young, innocent and a little naïve which made me really enjoy the story line. Sometimes the best things in life are the things that happened in life when we were young and didn’t know any better. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Book Review: Quickening: QuickSilver Codex Book 2 by Kallysten

Quickening (QuickSilver Codex #2)
by Kallysten
ebook
Published June 20th 2013
On Foh’Ran, a parallel world in which a magical force called the Quickening rules the lives of humans and vampires alike, Vivien just won her first battle.

Raised on Earth, Vivien had no idea she was heir to Foh’Ran's throne until Brad and Aedan, her bodyguards, revealed themselves to her and took her to her family’s ancestral castle. Her first confrontation with Rhuinn, the man who usurped her throne, ended as well as could be hoped and she won a few days of respite until she has to appear at the royal court again.

Before she does, however, she’ll need to break through her mental block and master the Quickening to prove herself a worthy daughter of Foh’Ran. She’ll also have to gain allies among Foh’Ran’s influential families. The most difficult part, however, might be to follow Aedan’s advice and learn to act like a queen when she’s still unsure whether she truly wants the throne, and would rather simply be Brad’s girlfriend.

Vivien is trying to forget about earth and embrace her native land of Foh’Ran but it’s harder than it sounds. For one thing they’ve never heard of coffee! How can a place exist without coffee! Time is faster in Foh’Ran and even a quick trip to earth for essentials can cost her precious time she doesn’t have. She needs to be focused on meeting the King who has her throne. Vivien doesn’t want her birthright but she does want to do good things for her people and has decided to stay in Foh’Ran to see what she can do.

Brad is having trouble staying strictly professional when he is so in love with Dame Vivien. It doesn’t make things any easier that Vivien wasn’t raised with the rules of high court and doesn’t think that their love is unproved. Between Brad and Aeden they start teaching her the ways of court and channeling. She must learn to channel if she is going to have allies and have any chance of being Queen.

The next book in the story didn’t disappoint. It brought new love and magic as well as heart break and anger. Big changes were coming at the end of the book and I look forward to reading the next installment to see where things will go.

Book Review: Bodyguards: QuickSilver Codex Book 1 by Kallysten

Bodyguards: QuickSilver Codex Book 1
by: Kallysten
Pages: 191
On the verge of her twentieth birthday, Vivien’s worries are those of a typical young woman: doing well in college, gaining more independence, and maybe managing to show Brad, her classmate and sometimes jogging partner, that she wouldn’t mind taking their burgeoning relationship to a different level.

Everything changes in the blink of an eye. Vivien stumbles into a knife fight, watches a man die in front of her, and soon listens, stunned, as Brad and his brother Aedan tell her a story of magic, vampires and a murderous ruler intent on killing a princess in hiding – a tale in which she is the princess and heir to a realm she didn’t know existed.

Vivien’s first instinct is to refuse to believe this incredible tale, even if it comes from a man she is attracted to. But when her self-proclaimed bodyguards use magic to take her to a different world, the edges of reality start blurring and Vivien has to figure out who she truly is.

As Vivien nears her twentieth birthday she is busing with college life and trying to get the attention of Brad. Brad is a student and her jogging partner but he seems so shy. Vivien finally gets the nerve to ask him out and is hurt when he turns her down. She decides that she doesn’t want anything to do with him and will start running on her own in a new place just to avoid him.

As she starts out on her new run she is attacked. Brad comes in to save her and she is shocked to see that he kills one of the men. Only it’s not Brad that comes to her rescue but rather his twin brother Aedan that she didn’t even know existed. The brothers tell her that she is a princess
from another place and hiding on Earth. They are sworn to protect her. They tell her of her birth place, vampires and rulers and it just doesn’t seem real.

Great new series! Anything is possible with magic and new worlds. This book is filled with all those things that I would like to experience. Sweet romance intermixed with danger keeps you turning the pages for more. A definite keep read for this series.

Kallysten talks about Shades of Pink (volume 2) Charity Anthology

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 22 authors have allied for 1 cause: fundraising for research. Their gift to everyone who makes a donation? A romance anthology (ebook) titled Shades of Pink (volume 2), totaling almost 150.000 words / about 400 pages as a PDF.

During all of October, we’ll post teasers for the stories, interviews of the authors and blog posts. Find them all on Kallysten’s blog, along with a FAQ, and of course the link where you can donate and help this worthy cause.

How Benedict Cumberbatch tickled my muse pink...
by Kallysten

When I started thinking about what I'd write for this year's Shades of Pink anthology, I had just finished working on Anterograde, which is set in my Demons Age series. I was still fully immersed in that world, in the not-completely-apocalyptic-but-close feeling created by the nightly attacks of ferocious demons that come in and invade Earth from another dimension, and by the endless war waged against those demons by human and vampire fighters.

So, I had a world to play in, but what game should it be, this time? I've explored the beginning of the demon invasion and its end, written stories about what the fighters do on the frontline and what they do in their bedrooms, and Anterograde itself wasn't about fighters per se but about the doctors who patch them up. So, who would I talk about this time? What would my characters do?

And that was when I watched this...

(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQgL7iuhL4I)

I have to confess having a (very slight) crush on actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Very slight, really. Minuscule. It's okay, Dear Hubby knows and gave his absolution. (It helps that he's a fan of Sherlock, too.)

So, I watched Benedict (and Louise Brealey) read letters written during the war by a soldier and his lover, and my muse said, "This! This is what we're writing!"

"What?" said I, perplexed. "We're writing a story about Benedict? It's kinda iffy to write fiction based on a real person..."

"No, no, not him, there are no words to describe the colors of his eyes anyway. No, we're writing about THE LETTERS!"

Of course! Letters exchanged by lovers during a time of war! I'd never written a story based on letters, but I'd read a handful, and I'd always thought that maybe, some day...

Well, this was the day. I already had my war. One character would be a fighter on the frontline, and the other would be safe at home and writing to them. This was as much as I knew when I opened a new file and typed, 'Dear soldier,' but soon I learned more about Samuel and Angel... just as they learned about each other.

The only issue I had while writing 'No Crayons On The Frontline' was to keep the story within the 10.000 words limit, so I might have to revisit Samuel and Angel sooner or later.

And if you'd like to know a tiny bit more about them, here is their first exchange of letters, the beginning of my contribution to the Shades of Pink anthology.

~~~Excerpt~~~
Dear soldier,
Only two words in, and here I am, confronting a feeling of oddness as it occurs to me I don’t know to whom I should address this letter. I have written few letters in my life – and by letter, I mean actual letters, the kind where one puts ink and thoughts onto paper to share with another person – and every one of those actual letters went to someone I knew beforehand, someone whose face I could picture, someone who I was sure would be able to hear my voice when they read my words, who would know when I was trying to be humorous or understand references to a shared past. And so, I find it difficult to write to you today without knowing your name or age or even whether you like long missives or will already be bored by the time you reach this point.
All I know about you, really, is that you are serving on the front line of the demon invasion. You protect me, along with everyone inside our city, and for this, for the danger you choose to face night after night, for the wounds you may have suffered, for the grief you may have experienced upon losing comrades, you have my sincere and heartfelt thanks.
It seems far from enough; I can only give you words on a page and not even a handshake to remind you that those you fight for are living beings made of flesh and bones rather than the abstract concept you might have in mind. That is, unless you fight for someone specific, for members of your family or friends, and it’s their image you keep in mind every time you raise your weapon on the battlefield. Either way, please believe that there is at least one person who, tonight, will send their best wishes toward the battlefield in the hope that you will remain safe.
Warm regards,
Dr. W. S. Sherridan
* * *
Dear Dr. Sherridan,
First, let me thank you your letter. While we (soldiers on the front line) do not fight every single night as you may believe, it certainly feels like we do. Even when there is no attack underway, we’re always aware that every moment of calm is only a brief respite in the storm. And while we don’t need or expect thanks, it’s great to know we are appreciated for what we do by those we try so hard to keep safe. Myself as well as all the soldiers in my unit who were lucky enough to be handed a letter were quite happy to receive them.
Receiving letters was even more special because they came in the day after the end of a long, bloody fight against demons. I’m not sure how much people in the city are told about the siege, I’m not even sure whether this letter will be read and possibly censored before it reaches you, but let’s just say that this was one of the most brutal demon attacks that I’ve seen. I escaped my turn outside the walls unscathed, but many others were less lucky. It was a sad day in the camp, but the letters and the reminder they gave us that we’re not fighting in vain made it easier to continue. As you pointed out in your letter, we’re fighting for very real people, made of flesh and blood like we are. People who sometimes pick up a pen to write a few words for us.
But I have the same strange feeling you had when you first wrote to me: I don’t know who I am writing to either. Your words and handwriting alone tell me that your letter is different from those my men were sharing with each other, in which misspellings, cute questions and unsteady handwriting give away that the writers are children. I knew you were an adult right away, and your signature only confirmed it. But that same signature told me very little. No first name, two initials, a last name… and those two small letters, a badge of pride to all those who earn them. Here I am, writing a letter to a doctor, wondering why he (she? ) participated in a letters program involving elementary school children. That is a puzzle, and while I have a couple of theories, I would be pleased if you would reply and tell me.
Until then, I will continue making up lists of what those initials might mean. My first thought for W was William, for reasons that will become clear when you read my signature. Am I anywhere close?
Regards from the front line,
Lieutenant Angel Williams
Book Review: Anterograde by Kallysten
Anterograde
by Kallysten
When Calden wakes up – every time he wakes up – the last thing he can recall is a debilitating headache that even his medical background failed to identify as anything more serious than a regular headache. He also remembers his decision to ignore the fact that his best friend Eli is married and to tell him about his long-standing feelings for him. He remembers June second.
But it is not June second anymore. The tattoos on his arm and chest prove it. They also tell him why he doesn’t remember anything past June second… and why Eli sleeps in his bed now.
When Calden wakes up – every time he wakes up – he gets to discover Eli is in love with him for the first time all over again.
"Anterograde amnesia is a loss of the ability to create new memories after the event that caused the amnesia, leading to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long-term memories from before the event remain intact." -wikipedia
I’ve put off writing this review because I was quite sure how to do it. The books we love are always the hardest to review. Let’s start with this is a gay romance. Now I know a lot of people don’t care for that, but this story is about so much more. There are a few sex scenes that can easily be skipped if you prefer not to read that.
There are two things that make this story stick out from the romance crowd. It is hyper focused on the two men, their relationship and dealing with Calden’s medical condition. A few other characters float in and out but they are peripheral. There are mentions of a complicated history for these two but it doesn’t go into that. I think this story is set in her “The Demon’s Age” series world and people live in a post-apocalyptic world where demons are trying to destroy the human race.
The most interesting element of the book and what makes it so unique is the way it was written. The chapters alternate between Calden and Eli in first person POV, but the time line of the events aren’t the same. Eli’s side of the story starts in the past on June 2 into the present, Calden’s is told from the present back to the past when he got sick on June 2. It doesn’t seem like it would work but it does! There is the option to read both POVs on the same timeline, but you will lose some of the emotional and disconcerting impact of the story that gives the reader a better understanding of what the characters are dealing with.
These two characters touched me and they are beautifully written. Kallysten is a talented author.
Alpha Male Diner Cook: Kallysten
Paranormal author Kallysten is cooking up some twins for you today! That's right a double recipe. She will prepare each on separately (NO, tasting till she finishes) and combine them at the end for a dish that will satisfy not only your senses, but also your soul. Hungry yet?
Bradan ('Brad') Dorentan (QuickSilver Guard channeler)
Recipe created by Kallysten
Bodyguards (QuickSilver Codex Book #1)
2 icy-blue eyes
1 disarming smile
1 silver tattoo
6'2" of lean, hard muscle
mounds of Quickening
just a dash of shyness
a generous shot of warm cocoa liquor
heaps of talent with a sword
an appreciation for anything that calls itself music
enough devotion to his brother and land to fill the sky and just a dash more of the same to his dame
Stir devotion, muscle, eyes and smile along with Quickening until the body forms and is able to channel magic. Be careful not to stir too much so the twin bond can develop fully.
While still malleable, apply silver tattoo to the left wrist and bind with QuickSilver Oath.
Bake slowly for 14 years on Earth. Occasionally baste with shyness, talent, cocoa liquor and appreciation of music. This will allow devotion to his dame to turn into love.
At regular intervals, return to Foh'Ran for a few hours to cultivate sword talent and insure that devotion to brother and land remains complete.
Right before his dame's Naming Day, allow him to break free of his shyness and finally reveal himself to her to allow him to express his full potential as QuickSilver Guard and love interest. Watch sparks fly and enjoy.
Aedan Oryonis (QuickSilver Guard vampire)
Recipe created by Kallysten
Quickening (QuickSilver Codex Book #2)
2 icy-blue eyes
2 razor-sharp fangs
6'2" of lean, hard muscle
mounds of Quickening
truckloads of secrets
plenty of blood
heaps of talent with knives
a sprinkling of loneliness
3 parts reserve, 1 part fire
enough devotion to his brother and land to fill the sky and just a dash more of the same to his dame
Stir devotion, muscle and eyes along with Quickening until the body forms and is able to channel magic. Be careful not to stir too much so the twin bond can develop fully.
While still malleable, bind with QuickSilver Oath.
Add fangs and blood. Be sure to filter out ability to channel but allow Quickening to remain to keep body alive. At this point, the eyes will take a metallic tint. This is normal.
Bake at the king's court under secrets for 75 years, allowing talent with knives to develop. This length will allow for reserve and fire to gain more flavor. At this point a sprinkling of loneliness is required, although you'll counteract the bitterness with occasional visits from twin brother.
These visits will insure that devotion to brother remains as deep as devotion to land. Devotion to his dame might appear to decrease, but do not be alarmed: its flavor will burst out again as soon as his dame is reintroduced to him. Savor.
Taste Test
Aedan blinked twice, then glanced down at his chest. “What? Oh. That. It’s nothing.”
“Nothing?” Bradan snorted. “Don’t be silly. Come here.”
With something that sounded like a cross between a chuckle and a sigh, Aedan pushed himself to his feet and came over. There wasn't much Bradan could do about the bruises; healers could erase those and fix just about anything else, but Bradan was no healer. The cuts, at least, he could heal.
Pushing Aedan’s pendant, a twin of his own, over his shoulder to rest against his back and clear his chest, Bradan took hold of the Quickening. He focused it through the emotion that permeated every fiber of his soul: his love for Vivien. The world lost its color, and yet in his mind, it still burst with life and beauty. Aedan shivered when Bradan raised his hand and channeled, but he didn’t say anything as his skin knitted itself back together. Soon, the marks on his chest appeared to be days old rather than fresh. In a few hours, there’d be no trace left.
“She channeled last night,” Aedan said in lieu of thanks.
Bradan had known that they’d talk about Vivien, but this start to the conversation surprised him nonetheless. “She did, yes. How do you know?”
“When you two channel together,” Aedan said in a low, strained voice, “the bond is amplified. I don’t just feel your emotions, I…”
He looked away. If Bradan hadn't known any better, he might have thought Aedan was embarrassed. It couldn't be, though. They had no secrets for each other. Unless…
“It’s like I’m there, too,” Aedan finished after clearing his throat. “I wasn't trying to—”
“I know,” Bradan said immediately, wishing nothing more than to end his brother’s discomfort. “Of course you didn't want to peek in. It’s the bond.”
Aedan nodded, his relief apparent when he met Bradan’s eyes again. “I've never heard of something like this happening. Have you?”
Shaking his head, Bradan smiled and turned back to the mirror, bringing the razor to his cheek again. “Where would I have heard about that? In the Otherworld?”
Aedan snorted and waited until Bradan had lifted the razor from his skin to jostle his shoulder.
“Watch it,” Aedan said. “She might lose interest if you cut that pretty face.”
“Or she might find me more handsome for it,” Bradan shot back, grinning. He thought of letting Aedan wash up in cold water, but with a long suffering sigh he channeled to warm the bowl of water in the washroom.
“Is that how you got hurt?” he asked after a moment. “Too distracted by the bond to fight properly? What kind of animal got to you, anyway?”
A beat passed before Aedan replied from the washroom, his voice a low murmur.
“A welfgar.”
The razor slipped, leaving a thin red line on Bradan’s skin, and blood immediately welled up to it. Bradan couldn't have cared less. He took the few steps to the washroom without really being aware of doing so, his eyes wide as he stared at Aedan.
“A what?”
Aedan rolled his eyes at him. “What did I say about cutting your face?”
He brought his index finger to his mouth, and Bradan caught a hint of fang as Aedan cut his fingertip. He started to reach for Bradan’s face, but Bradan stopped him by catching his wrist.
“You went into the woods and fought a welfgar,” he said blankly. “By all the Quickening, why would you do something so stupid?”
Huffing, Aedan pulled his wrist free and pressed his bloody finger along the cut on Bradan’s face. Bradan tried to pull back, but Aedan wouldn't let him retreat before he was done.
“I do have to feed,” Aedan said as he finished. “Rabbits and other small animals only help to a point.”
The words didn't feel like a lie, but neither were they the whole truth. Watching his brother return to washing up, Bradan couldn't help but wince as he took in the bruises on Aedan’s ribs and back. Even if Aedan had wanted to feed off a welfgar, why would he let the animal get close enough to hurt him? Why hadn't he killed it first? He was good enough to kill it with a well-placed throw of his knife.
Suddenly, it all clicked. Aedan’s bruises, his hunger—the bond.
“Did it work?” Bradan asked at last.
Aedan looked up from drying his face and chest with a towel. His expression was unreadable, but the guilt pulsing through the bond wasn't only Bradan’s.
“I’m better now,” he said, and that wasn't an answer.
Kallysten’s most exciting accomplishment to date was to cross a few thousand miles and an ocean to pursue (and catch!) the love of her life. Top 10 Reasons NOT to get pregnant while in a relationship with a vampire + giveaway
In Kallysten's newest erotic romance Beyond the Edge her character Virginia, a human, is in a relationship with her vampire lover Anando, but they also "party" with their friends who are a m-vamp/f-vamp/m-human trio. Things are going to get kind of hectic. So Virginia is here to give us many reason why this is a bad idea.
Virginia’s Top 10 Reasons NOT to get pregnant while in a relationship with a vampire.
10 - The Fertility Issue
Vampires can’t have kids, everyone knows that. Some of them can be pretty touchy about it. Even if they’ve had time to get used to the idea, it’s still a difficult topic for some of them. And even if they say they’re fine with the whole thing, who knows what they really think?
9 - The In-Laws
Bad enough when your MIL is human and tries to tell you all about her pregnancy with your SO whenever she can catch you unaware. Now when she’s got fangs and has lived hundreds of years and expects everyone to jump when she raises an eyebrow and (you suspect) she has killed for more frivolous reasons than that… *gulp*
8 - The Blood
When pregnant, your monthly friend goes on vacation, which hey, nice break. But when your SO is a vampire and doesn’t mind blood AT ALL to the point that it might (absolutely hypothetically) drive him even more wild in bed (or rather in the large shower) than usual… Hypothetically, it’d be a pity to deprive yourself him from such fun (albeit messy) times.
7 - The Future
Vampires and sunlight go together just about as well and gasoline and a flame. Which means that when the Offspring grows up and goes to school, birthday parties, the zoo, the beach, various games and outdoors activities, guess who’s going to be the driver 100% of the time? And you can’t even blame your SO because it’s not his fault if he’s highly flammable.
6 - The Birth Certificate
Try explaining to those nice clerks that yes, you do want your SO’s name on the birth certificate even though he’s a vampire and A) is physiologically incapable of fathering a child as well as B) legally has no right whatsoever to raise or claim custody of a child. Of course your SO flashing his fangs at said clerks might help…
5 - The Explanations
And speaking of explanations, try explaining to your friends and family who know about your SO’s fangs how exactly you became pregnant. Bonus points if they did not know about the fangs until you start explaining.
4 - The Donor
How do you choose the donor? Do you just pick some random guy on a catalog and hope he didn’t lie about his IQ and eye color, or do you ask a trusted friend, who might happen to be in a relationship with vampires himself, and wow that’s an entire new can of worms you’re opening there. Extra juicy when you don’t actually plan it and it just happens, to everybody’s surprise.
3 - The Cravings
When you crave a double fudge, extra nuts, chocolate sprinkles, whipped cream, vanilla and pineapple sundae with two cherries on top and pickle on the side and there is no pickle left and you finished the sprinkles two days ago and it’s three in the afternoon on a bright sunny day, guess who’s going to have to get dressed to go buy the necessary ingredients for your treat? Not Mr. Flammable, that’s for sure.
2 - The Biting
If you’re in a relationship with a vampire, presumably you don’t mind him biting you. And why would you mind, really? If he has any clue what he’s doing - and chances are, he has perfected it to an art - biting you can be as enjoyable to you as it is to him. If performed at the right time during a sexual encounter, it can be pretty mind-blowing, and there’s nothing hypothetical about that one. So having to cut down on the biting because your body should be feeding your baby rather than your lover… it’s almost as tragic as having to forgo sex.
1 - The Sex
Speaking of sex… Now my experience of sex with vampires is admittedly limited seeing how I haven’t had that many vampire partners (well, three, if you want to go by whom I shared a bed with but part of it is debatable) but from my small sample (and I don’t mean ‘small’ in any kind of anatomical meaning) I have found out that vampires enjoy kinky sex. I mentioned the biting already, and the only-in-the-shower fun, but there’s more to it, including toys used and/or worn by either of us, positions, situations… Ahem. Being told by the doctor to keep things ‘vanilla’ in the bedroom was the most frustrating part of this whole experience, and those 9+ months, counting the recovery, seemed reeeeeally long. Then again, the end result was definitely worth it. And watching your SO’s eyes light up when he holds your child… forget these 10 reasons, just find yourself a vamp and go for it ;)
As Brett Andrews, owner of the famous club On The Edge, reaches the big ‘four-O,’ he has one request and one question for his two vampire lovers, Leo and Lisa: he doesn’t want them to organize any sort of celebration for him – but he does want to know why neither of them has ever mentioned the possibility of turning him into a vampire.
The question finds an answer, and the three of them share a promise for the year to come. His request, on the other hand, is doomed from the start as they already have plans for the big day: they have a gift for him to match presents he offered each of them, and the party they planned with help from a couple of friends promises to be something special.
Vampire Anando and his human lover Virginia met at On The Edge. They are friends and occasional lovers of Leo, Brett and Lisa. When asked, they gladly accept to host the big-bash birthday party – and the private after-party, too. A good time is had by all, but the last gift is only revealed a few weeks later, to be delivered after nine months.
With both humans in love with vampires, neither expected a child in their future. As for the vampires, they knew for a fact that they’d never become parents. For all five, once the first shock has passed, decisions have to be made. Will this new adventure strengthen bonds of love and friendship, or will it tear lives apart?
