Book Review: Ancient Retribution (Ancients Rising Book 5) by Katie Reus

Ancient Retribution (Ancients Rising Book 5)
by Katie Reus
March 22, 2022
A dragon princess once lost… Juniper hunts down the most dangerous criminals on her black ops missions—and she’s good at it. A dragon shifter who was raised by wolves, she doesn’t know her birth clan and gave up trying to find them a hundred years ago. Since The Fall, when rogue dragons razed half the planet, she’s spent her days hunting down supernaturals who think they can escape justice, delivering her own. During a dangerous mission, she falls into the claws of a sexy warrior dragon adjusting to the modern world—and from the start she knows she’s in trouble. Is now found… Dragon shifter warrior Zephyr doesn’t fit into this new world. He doesn’t feel like he fits in anywhere—until he meets Juniper and her crew. He knows from the moment he sees the sexy and brave female dragon that they’re destined to be together. Unfortunately, life just got a whole lot more complicated. Not only are they in the fight of their lives against an overwhelming enemy force, but she’s royalty and her long-lost clan has come to bring her home. Even as they fight side by side to save hundreds of humans, he knows that winning her heart will be the hardest and most pivotal battle he’s ever waged. Juniper doesn’t want to get mated, doesn’t trust anyone with her heart—but this is one battle Zephyr will never stop fighting. Author note: Though part of a series, this book may be read as a stand-alone, complete with HEA.

Ancient Retribution is another hit in an already exciting series by author Katie Reus. This author has found the bread and butter of her series and delivers yet again!

LOVE that our leading lady Juniper was raised by wolves, cause they are funny and all about family. You will either love or hate that aspect; this time, for me, it works. I would have enjoyed more wolf antics and snarky humor, but maybe down the road with other characters. Juniper is a badass leading lady that you can get behind and cheer for. She's not meek and still very far from being a total overbearing basket case; I loved her tremendously.

In steps her hunk-o-loving dragon-man Zephyr and good golly do these two light up the pages! Hot and heavy, just like I want. Both are individually great and together can team up to rock the paranormal world. Katie has done another great job in executing a very colorful and adventurous tale, lots of heart in this one and, of course, the happily ever after that you want.

Giving this one 4.5 Sheep

Genre: Paranormal Romance
His responsibility is to his pack, his people—the territory of New Orleans.

When the world devolved into chaos and fire, Alpha wolf King kept his territory from collapsing. Now, every day it seems there’s a new challenge—rogue witches, treacherous vampires, evil dragons. But his biggest threat is Aurora. Unique, magical, a female who sees him, the male, and not simply the Alpha in charge. But she’s thrown up so many walls that he’s afraid he’ll never be able to break through to the woman behind them. When the most dangerous threat they’ve ever faced ravages the city he’ll need her at his side—to defeat it, and then claim the woman who already owns him, body and soul.

But she makes him want more.

After being held captive for a year, Aurora has embraced her freedom. For the first time in her life she’s living away from her older sister in a new territory. A new world. She’s made friends and is helping New Orleans get back on its feet. But she’s far from the woman she used to be. Even so, she can’t fight her ever present and growing attraction to King. Except she’s afraid she’s broken, that she’ll never be able to have a normal relationship again—that she can’t handle being an Alpha’s mate. When an evil linked to his past threatens to tear them apart and destroy the city, she must set her fears aside and find the courage to follow her heart—and the wolf who’s already won it.

Author note: Though part of a series, this book may be read as a stand-alone, complete with HEA.

EXCERPT
She tried the front door and it was unlocked, which actually surprised her.

“Not open,” Mac’s deep, rumbly voice called out from the back about a second before he stepped out from his workshop. His eyes widened when he saw her.

And he stood there looking like deer in headlights. Good.

“Adeline,” he began.

“A text? Seriously? You blow me off with a freaking text,” she snapped out, her boots stomping forward of their own volition. That burning fire that had spent days kindling was licking up her spine now as she worked up a good head of anger.

He closed his eyes briefly as he moved toward her. “Look, it’s not what you think.”

“Really? It’s not what I think? You didn’t send me a dismissive, crappy text about an hour before our date? After spending all that time together and becoming…friends.” Or she’d thought they had. Obviously she was wrong. “So you didn’t blow me off after all that? And then ignore me right in front of people on Main Street?” It was quite literally possible there was actual steam coming out of her ears right now.

Guilt flickered across his expression for a moment but then his face went carefully neutral. “Look, I didn’t know how else to handle it. I just don’t think we should see each other. I shouldn’t have ignored you and I should have called, but—”

She’d took another step forward, hands on hips, when the front door behind her swung open with a bang.

She jumped and turned to find some guy stalking in. He had on heavy-looking boots, jeans, a short-sleeved T-shirt, and there was a chain hanging from his back pocket attached to his belt. And he had some ugly-looking tattoos on his arms. Prison tats.

Even as he fights for their future…

With the world still rebuilding after massive dragon attacks, famous singer Star isn’t willing to rely on a stranger to protect her family—though dragon shifter Lachlan is difficult to resist. Something about him is strangely familiar, but she doesn’t understand why. He’s already helped Star rescue her sister from a recent abduction, but trust doesn’t come easy when his kind has nearly hunted her race to extinction. When her sister’s kidnapper launches another violent attack, Star has no choice but to accept Lachlan’s aid. But no matter that he’s stepped up to protect her, she’ll never allow the ancient Scottish dragon into her heart.

They’re bound by the past.

Lachlan lost the woman he was meant to mate millennia ago. Unable to live in a world without her, his pain drove him to hibernation. He never thought he would move on—until Star. He’s well aware the feisty shifter is his new destiny, so if tailing her to New Orleans is what he has to do to be near her, then so be it. When Star is attacked, Lachlan resolves to protect her at all costs. And he won’t have to do it alone. It will take Lachlan, his clansmen, and Star’s misfit band of friends to rain fiery vengeance down upon their enemy if she and her sister are to ever be truly free. Only then can he claim her and discover the shocking truth that lies buried in their past.

Excerpt
“Lachlan,” she murmured, the feel of his name on her tongue familiar.

“I like it when you say my name.” His Scottish accent got just a little bit deeper, and a whole lot sexier.

She fought off a shudder as something echoed inside her. Damn it, she needed to shut this down now. “Look, tonight was pleasant—”

“Pleasant? Already giving me the brush-off, lass?”

“Not the brush-off. Lachlan—”

He groaned. “I told you I love it when you say my name. Are you just trying to drive me mad now?”

His Scottish brogue was so crazy sexy and damn did she feel that all the way to her toes. “Fine, I won’t say your name again.”

“Oh, I want you to say my name. Particularly while my head is between your legs—”

“Lachlan!” She turned to stare at him. No one ever talked to her like that. People usually kissed up to her, and on the occasion a man or male worked up the courage to ask her out, they were usually douchey frat bro types. Or mega-rich assholes who assumed she would say yes. This… She had not expected this boldness.

He shrugged his broad shoulders, looking more delicious than she could handle. “I believe in honesty.”

“I don’t care,” she spluttered. “You can’t just say stuff like that.”

“Why not? I know you want me.”

“You’re a very maddening, arrogant dragon,” she muttered. “What?” she asked when he gave her a strange look and stopped. “That can’t be the first time someone’s said that to you. I feel like you probably drive people crazy all the time with your ‘honesty.’”

“No…it’s not the first time.” Still, the look he gave her was almost guarded.

She looked away for a moment as they stood in the alley that ran behind shops and restaurants. It was quiet, though she could hear people in the distance—laughter, little strings of music coming from somewhere. But here in this moonlit alleyway, there was only the two of them. The knowledge that it was just the two of them here heated her blood.

She wanted to say his name but didn’t want him to drop another sensual statement on her. Instead she pressed her palm to his chest, intending to… She wasn’t sure what her intentions were. But the instant her fingers curled against his shirt, he let out another groan and dipped his head toward hers. He didn’t pause, didn’t wait as he brushed his lips over hers.

As if he had every right to.

She was the one who deepened the kiss, grabbing onto his shirt and tugging him closer. As she did, it felt like a dance they’d done a thousand times before, like coming home. Something inside her broke free as she sank into this teasing, the sweep of his tongue against hers.

Immediately he took over, a low rumble emanating from his chest as he hoisted her up, as if he couldn’t get close enough to her. She wrapped her legs around him as if it was the most natural thing in the world. She had the feeling he wanted to pin her to the brick wall, but instead he simply wrapped his arms around her, cupping her ass and pulling her tight to him as he delved his tongue into her mouth.

Teasing, tasting, tantalizing. Triple Ts, and the man was making her crazy.

Heat flooded between her legs as he kneaded her ass, again in a way that felt so damn familiar. She didn’t question it but grinded up against him instead, rolling her hips against him as they made out like teenagers. Even as they kissed, she hated that there were clothes in the way. Her nipples tightened against her bra cups, the friction sending another rush of heat through her. God, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d simply made out with someone and it was invigorating and—

“Holy shit,” she heard someone mutter from nearby and pulled back.

That was when she realized she was glowing. Well, her purple fire was flickering all across her body and her hair. And her skin had a soft, violet glow to it. Oh goddess, no. No, she hadn’t felt the change come on at all.

Book Review: Darkness Rising (Darkness Series Book 9) by Katie Reus

Darkness Rising (Darkness Series Book 9)
by Katie Reus
June 4, 2019
251 pages

From USA Today bestselling author Katie Reus comes the final story in the sensual, pulse-pounding Darkness series…

When a bringer of death…

Awakened after millennia, dragon warrior Reaper is ready to fulfill his destiny…until he sees Greer. With one glimpse, everything Reaper has ever known throughout his very long life is irrevocably changed. Greer’s his mate, he feels it in his blood, in his soul—but convincing her is another matter. The dragon clan healer finds him obnoxious and annoying, but he knows a woman’s interest when he smells it. And Greer smells like one word: mine.

Meets a giver of life…

Greer has spent hundreds of years using her healing abilities for the good of others, making her the polar opposite of Reaper. The ferocious war general may be an ancient, but his arrogance proves he hasn’t spent any of that time learning about women. Greer is displeased when her Alpha sends her to New Orleans with the insufferable warrior—then she sees him in action against a menace threatening to tear the city apart. Fierce, protective, magnificent…mate-worthy. Maybe opposites do attract, but if they want to live long enough to find out, they’ll first have to save the world teetering on the brink of obliteration.

Length: NOVEL
Author note: This is the final book in the Darkness series and can be read as a stand-alone.
Darkness Rising definitely fits the bill when it comes to an action-packed paranormal romance. If you love dragon shapeshifters and wonder if it’s possible to have them in a modern-day setting, look no further than Katie Reus. She does a wonderful job of making these dragons blend in as much as possible. Until they can’t anymore.

While Darkness Rising is technically the last book in the series, it isn’t the last time readers will see these characters or this world again, and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the next chapter of this paranormal romance saga. Yes, saga. There’s so much that happens in this book that changes things forever for all the characters involved.

Yet for all the action and world-shattering events that happen, Reus doesn’t forget that there’s a romance to develop. I felt that Reaper and Greer had plenty of time to get to know each other and fall in love. At the same time, Reaper had to acclimate to his new and fast-changing surroundings which sometimes lead to some light humor. He IS pretty darn old.

It isn’t necessary to read the series in order to understand it, but because it’s better if you do, I suggest picking up the first book ASAP.

Book Review: Sentinel of Darkness (Darkness Series Book 8) by Katie Reus

Sentinel of Darkness (Darkness Series Book 8)
by Katie Reus
October 16, 2018
99 pages
Book 8 of 8 in Darkness (8 Book Series)
She thought she’d put her past behind her…

Local artist Keva might be human, but she knows about the things that go bump in the night. Years ago, a dragon shifter saved her from certain death. Ever since, she’s lived in his clan’s territory and put her life back together. But the feeling of security is only an illusion, because her past has come back to haunt her. A past with claws and fangs, demanding blood.

He’ll do whatever it takes to defend his mate…

Dagen has finally met his mate—except he insults her the first time they meet. He’s not too proud to grovel to get back into her good graces. But when a threat from her past emerges, he realizes that he’ll do anything to keep her safe. Even if it means dying—or losing her forever.

Length: 30,000 words

Author note: This is a stand-alone story in the Darkness series complete with an HEA and no cliffhanger.

Katie Reus is such an amazing author and Sentinel of Darkness is one of the many reasons why. It feels like an entire novel packed into a mere 30,000 words.

The plot is pretty straightforward: Artist and human Keva has been living in shifter territory for years ever since a dragon shifter saved her from an abusive boyfriend. She’s managed to put her life together as best as she can but soon enough her past comes back to haunt her in the form of her boyfriend’s shifter family and she doesn’t know if she can trust the Dagen, the dragon shifter that has captured her interest. Meanwhile, Dagen knows Keva is his mate and while he didn’t exactly make the best first impression he is determined to win her over and protect her from the enemies that want her dead.

I love it when Reus’ characters have a less than ideal first meeting, and in this case, Dagen really puts his foot in his mouth with Keva but as powerful as he is (Dragon shifter guys!) he isn’t above doing a bit of groveling to get back into her good graces. I love that he isn’t completely confident in his ability to win Keva over, I don’t care for overconfident or arrogant males and Dagen is just the right blend of confidence and humility to make him likable and a hero worth rooting for. And Keva is just one of those heroines that you can’t help but cheer for. She’s a survivor and since the night that she was rescued she has become stronger and more determined to reclaim her life and not let fear rule it. I liked her spirit and her humor too. She made a great partner to Dagen and I loved them as a couple because Dagen never tried to take total control of Keva’s life or hover like a paranoid parent over a child. I really felt that the author balanced out their relationship as best as possible given that Dagen is a dragon shifter and Keva is a human. Overall they just made a great couple.

Sentinel of Darkness is the 8th book in the Darkness series but can totally be read as a stand alone without having previous books spoiled.

Book Review: Beyond the Darkness (Darkness #3) by Katie Reus

Beyond the Darkness (Darkness #3)
by Katie Reus
Paperback, 345 pages
March 10th 2015 by KR Press
Now that she has her freedom, she’s not giving it up.

Dragon shifter Keelin Petronilla spent centuries in forced hibernation dreaming of one thing: freedom. Now she’s living life on her terms—she’s ditched her clan for an unruly wolf pack, she tends bar for a half-demon, and she’s loving it…until a powerful supernatural being targets her. She intends to handle the mysterious attacks on her own…without the help of dragon Alpha Bran Devlin. Sure, he’s sexy in that hot, scowling possessive way, but Keelin wants to live her own life in her own way.

Now that he’s found his mate, he’s not letting her go.

Former black ops agent Bran Devlin is a born dragon Alpha and leader of a fierce clan. Getting mated was never part of his plan—until a feisty dragon princess gets under his skin in a big way. The hell of it is, she doesn’t want a mate; she just wants to have a good time. He plays along, but when a dark and powerful being marks her for death, he’s determined to stay by her side in spite of her protests. Now that he’s found his mate, he means to keep her safe no matter what the cost…even if he has to risk it all.

After waking up from a forced hibernation that lasted centuries, dragon shifter Keelin Petronilla is determined to do things her way now. Feeling out of touch with the modern world, she moves away from her still hibernating parents and gets a job at a bar. She wants to live life on her terms and mating with Alpha dragon Bran Devlin isn’t part of her plan, even if she does find him attractive.

Bran isn’t exactly looking for a mate either but he’s drawn to Keelin and her fierce need for independence. Suddenly having a mate like her doesn’t seem so bad, at least to him. When a powerful being targets Keelin for an unknown reason, Bran digs in his heels and appoints himself her protector, if not her future mate. But fighting an unknown enemy isn’t easy when he’s fighting Keelin’s stance on mating and his feelings for her as well.

Okay, so I missed the first two books in this series by Katie Reus and I’m kicking my own butt. Beyond Darkness was just enough paranormal to satisfy my craving but it still had a contemporary romance feel. Keelin and her friends live seemingly normal lives with jobs and hobbies I could relate to yet they also belonged to a world of wolves, magic and dragons!

Keelin was such a good example of an inexperienced heroine because what she lacked in experience she made up for in bravado and intelligence. She didn’t always make the best choices but she did try to make her own way in her world, mistakes and all. I liked that about her. She didn’t turn and run into Bran’s arms when things got bad, and she was the target of the villain so it would have been so easy for her to become a watering pot and a damsel in distress. She didn’t and tried to solve her problems herself but even when she did concede that she needed Bran’s help, she didn’t let him take over completely. She insisted that she be a part of the solution and that she be kept informed of what was going on. For being inexperienced, she was a natural at taking control of her life and that rocked.

And as Alpha dragon, Bran was amazing at being fair and treating Keelin as her own entity with her own thoughts, and capabilities. Even when he was fighting the urge to lock her away and solve all her problems, Bran was still a great hero. He wasn’t controlling or over the top with the “Me Alpha, You My Female” attitude. Not that Keelin would have put up with that crap anyway.

Together Bran and Keelin made a strong team, their reluctant romance was a mixture of humor and passion. I loved their stubborn natures because it just made them better characters as they stumbled through their problems and learned what worked with each other and what didn’t. Bran had a lot to prove to Keelin and Keelin had a lot to prove to herself. There was definitely growth from beginning to end.

Beyond the Darkness wasn’t just Bran and Keelin’s story though. It set up future books in the series, most notably Bo and Nyx, two characters whom I think will give Bran and Keelin a run for their money in the stubborn department. I hope they get their story soon. Though I would also love to see more dragon shifters in the series, since Katie Reus has a way of making them irresistible!

I may have missed the first two books in the series, *insert grumbling here* but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this latest installment from one of my new favorite authors. I look forward to the next book in the series!

Book Review (ARC): Avenger's Heat by Katie Reus

Avenger's Heat (Moon Shifter #4)
by Katie Reus
To truly have her, he must free her from her dark secret…

Enforcer Erin Flynn has dedicated her life to protecting her kind. But keeping her heart safe from Noah Campbell, the smoking-hot shifter who saved her life last year, is more difficult. The deadly beauty would love to sink into his arms and become his mate, but she knows she can’t—he must never know about her dark past.

When Erin is sent to investigate the disappearances of pregnant shifters in New Orleans, Erin and Noah find themselves involved in a mystery more sinister than anyone expected. And as Erin delves further into the crimes, chilling information about her own past is revealed. The people who wanted her dead in the first place are trying to finish the job, and Noah wants nothing more than to shield her from harm. But can Erin truly trust Noah and let him see the wounded beast she’s hidden for so long?

With so many big name paranormal romance authors out there it’s hard for me to find a new to me author that suits my tastes. I hadn’t had a chance to read Katie Reus’ books before now but if they’re even half as impressive as Avenger’s Heat then I’m going to be a very broke reader soon.

I love shifter romances but often times the males are just too overbearing and the females too wimpy for my tastes but, with Noah and Erin that was not the case.

Noah is all alpha, but he knows when to step back and give Erin her space to stand on her own. He understood Erin’s need for closure from her past and even her need for revenge. Noah didn’t have the “Step back and let me take care of your problems babe” macho complex and Erin didn’t expect him to either. I loved Erin because she’s the type of female who doesn’t ask any male’s permission to be who she is, she just goes in and kicks major butt all while dealing with a violent past. Separately, Noah and Erin are great characters and together they form and impressive team. In the areas where Erin is weakest, Noah is strong and vice versa. It was a partnership in the best sense of the word.

Their romantic relationship took a while to develop but it fit with the pacing of the story and Erin’s past but the chemistry is definitely there from page one.

Noah and Erin aren’t the only characters in Avenger’s Heat. There seems to be a revolving door of characters that sometimes made my head spin and took quite a bit of page time away from the main characters in the story. Not that I didn’t enjoy them, but most readers can only handle a handful of characters at a time and if this is a series, there’s plenty of time to introduce and spread out the characters through different books. No need to overload the reader with so many characters and story lines in one book.

The action and suspense aspect of Avenger’s Heat was well done and definitely marks the book as a paranormal romance with the inclusion of vampires and bloody battles. It didn’t go over the top on the blood and gore though so I would say this rates as a medium on the paranormal scale.

Avenger’s Heat is fast paced and interesting from start to finish, it has a full roster of characters that can sometimes be confusing, but none the less interesting. It can be read as a stand alone or as part of a series, I for one will not only be checking out the previous books in this series but also the rest of Katie Reus’ books.

She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense. Her publishers include Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne, Ellora’s Cave and NAL/Signet Eclipse (Penguin). Regardless of genre, she always includes a happy ending. When she’s not creating stories she loves spending time with her husband and family.

Ingredients:
· 2 ancient blades forged from titanium and blessed with fae magic that have killed innumerable guilty beings
· 2 scars that criss-cross over his left eye: left there by someone he loves
· 500 years of dangerous living
· 2 cups of loyalty to those he cares about
· 1 gray wolf who fights for dominance over his human half
· 2 piercing gray eyes
· 1 single weakness: Kat Saburova

Combine to create one ancient, lethal enforcer whose entire world got f'ed up when his only weakness walked out on him.
Careful: has a tight control on his inner wolf, but metes out justice to those who hurt the innocent.

Taste Test

“If you have a need to find sexual release, you won’t search it out with any other male but me.” The words rumbled up from Jayce’s chest in a low growl that sounded more wolf than human.

The statement took Kat so off guard that she dropped her arms from their protective embrace around herself. “Excuse me?”

He leaned in closer until his entire body was a mere inch from hers and his mouth was next to her ear. His hot breath sent a tingle racing through her, searching out every nerve ending until she practically trembled with the need to feel that mouth all over her. “If you go to another male, I will kill him. That human tonight is lucky he’s alive.”

Surviving for centuries, powerful lupine shifter Jayce Kazan managed to stay away from humans until he met Kat Saburova and was consumed by the need to protect her. But while Jayce shared his passion with the human seer, he refused to make her his bondmate—a refusal that caused the end of their relationship.

A year later, an attack that left Kat near death has resulted in another lupine shifter turning her. Furious that he wasn’t the one to save her, Jayce is determined to show Kat that he is the one she should rely on. But the newly turned shifter is still traumatized and worried that she’ll hurt those she loves, unless she can learn to control her inner wolf.

And as Jayce struggles to protect Kat from her own worst instincts and convince her to rekindle their love, the extremists who almost killed her are looking to finish the job…
