Interview: Paranormal Romance Author D.B. Reynolds + giveaway

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I was a voracious reader, even as a child, and that led me to writing. But it’s difficult to earn a living that way, so off I went to university and a proper job for many years. But then I decided to take a German language class, mostly because it was one of my darling husband’s SIX fluent languages! While perusing the local college’s night school offerings, I happened to see a writing class being taught by an editor whose name I recognized from her many years at all the big Syfy publishing houses. I’d read so many of her authors’ books and just had to meet her. So, I enrolled in her class instead. During that class, I wrote a couple short stories as assignments, and she told me I should really be writing seriously. So I did.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!
I’m lucky to have travelled all over the world, which I love. I’ve been to many interesting places, seen history being made, but the one trip that was truly a dream come true was my trip to Antarctica two years ago. It was alien and exciting, everything I’d always hoped it would be. We went out on heavy-duty Zodiac rafts every day and saw many different species of whales within touching distance. We crossed the Antarctic Circle, visited the Ukraine science station, and were nearly swamped when a HUGE ice formation collapsed almost right on top of us. It was exhilarating, thrilling, and something I’ll never forget!

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
Tall, blonde, intelligent, introverted, with a rebellious streak that got me into lots of trouble when I was younger.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
A dragon, just because I love them, even though I’ve never written about them. I have several throughout my house, though.

If you could spend time with a character from your books who would it be? And what would you do during that time?
I love all my characters, each in different ways. But if I’m going to spend time with one of them, I’d want to have fun. I’ve always thought Rajmund would be the best guy to spend an evening with. He’s smart and very handsome. He has a dry wit, likes to have a good time, and isn’t too terribly neurotic. No drama.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?
I always have control of my stories. That doesn’t meant they don’t change as I’m writing, but it not because of anything the characters do/don’t do, or become.

Why do you write in the syfy and paranormal genre?
The first full manuscript I ever wrote was a fantasy that I submitted to a writing contest sponsored by one of my favorite authors. I’d been reading fantasy and science fiction since I was 13 years old, and knew that’s what I wanted to write. I didn’t win the contest, but I received some very nice comments from a woman I greatly admired. I was thrilled.

I never lost my love for fantasy and science fiction. It opens the universe to a writer. If you can dream it, it can exist in your stories, no matter the subject. Which is why I always chose what my teachers called “alternative reality” as the setting for my writing assignments through high school. A chance to combine what I loved with something I had to do.

And that’s what I love about the paranormal genre. I can create characters with any abilities I want, as long as they make sense within the universe of the book. My characters all have some kind of magic, but they are very different from each other, come from very different worlds, and have very different histories that shaped them.

Xavier (Vampires in America Book 14)
by D.B. Reynolds
September 30, 2020
307 pages
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy
Barcelona—exquisite architecture, masterful artists, and just down the coast, an ancient fortress where an old and powerful vampire lives…and rules all of Spain.

Tall, dark, and deadly, vampire Xavier Prospero Flores waded through blood to destroy his enemies and reach the pinnacle of vampire society--Vampire Lord. He has only one regret in his long life, and that’s the day he rejected the advances of Layla Casales. She’d been too innocent, too naïve, and far too young. But she’d also been his.

Layla Casales was only nineteen when she left Spain, brokenhearted and humiliated by Xavier’s rejection. But now, ten years later, the ties of family are pulling her back, not only to Spain, but to Xavier’s fortress. Her father, the vampire lord’s military commander, is critically ill. Layla has spent years fighting on battlefields around the world, so when her father asks her to come home, she can’t say no.

Though Xavier’s rule began on the ashes of his enemies, it’s not vampires trying to kill him now--it’s humans. He needs to eliminate his enemy before more of his people die. Layla arrives just in time to help, but while she came for her father, the minute she and Xavier see each other, desire burns as hotly as if they’d never been apart. Xavier isn’t going to let her go this time. But before they can rediscover the love they walked away from, they must first keep each other alive.

XAVIER: Vampires in Europe (Vampires in America Book 14)
D. B. Reynolds
Excerpt
Catalonia, Spain, 1859

XAVIER FLORES Prospero raced into Barcelona far ahead of his companions. He’d been in Madrid when he’d known, just known, that his Sire was dead. Every vampire on the continent would have known that someone powerful had died, but Xavier had known who it was—Vampire Lord, the Lord of Spain, Josep Alexandre, centuries old, a power beyond reckoning, and in an instant, he was gone. Xavier’s grief had been real, his fury unmatched. For if Josep was dead, someone had killed him. And that someone was now Lord of Spain, except . . . . His far-reaching sensitivity to the balance of power told him that the vampire who’d murdered Josep was too weak to rule, unable to contain the power released with the vampire lord’s death. And that left the territory leaderless, its vampires desperate and gasping for the strength and leadership they needed to survive.

By all accounts, the murderous fool had managed to escape the city before being killed himself, but the result had been utter carnage, as one vampire after another went on a killing spree in a bid for power. No one had managed to hold the territory—which encompassed all of Spain—for longer than a few days. Xavier hadn’t needed anyone to tell him the territory was in crisis. He was powerful enough to sustain himself and his vampire children without a vampire lord’s assistance, but most vampires weren’t. In every city and village he’d passed through on his race back to Barcelona—every place where one or more vampires had lived—he’d had to linger long enough to revive dying vampires, to share his blood and make them his, to save their lives.

And still the challenges and killings continued. It was a constant noise in his head, his instinct straining to forge a connection to one new ruler after another.

But he’d finally reached Barcelona, the center of Spain’s vampires because it had been Josep’s home for the hundreds of years he’d ruled. Racing down the crowded streets, Xavier ignored angry shouts and thrown objects from pedestrians protesting his horse’s thundering passage, until he pounded through the gates of Josep’s home, his mount’s hooves skidding on the polished stone in front of the dead vampire lord’s mansion.

Leaving the horse to the care of his companions, who’d been close behind him when they’d drawn even with the city and would arrive soon enough, he stormed up the steps two at a time and walked into a bloodbath.

The entrance hall, once a gaudy excess of gild and crystal, now stank of old blood and worse, much worse. The pink marble that had been imported from Italy to grace the floor was now dark red with blood stains, the grooves between the huge slabs still slick and shining. Jesu Crist, how many had died here? And why? Vampires didn’t bleed like that when they died, which meant humans had been slaughtered like cattle to feed . . . hell, he didn’t know whom. The instincts that had told him the territory was in turmoil hadn’t provided any names. It didn’t work like that.

Xavier walked deeper into the mansion, more cautious now. If vampires had been reduced to butchering humans, there was no telling what state they were in. He was confident enough in his ability to destroy anyone who dared attack him, but he wouldn’t enjoy having some feral beast of a vampire launch itself at him from hiding and sink fangs into his flesh. Dios mio, wasn’t that a disgusting thought?

“Sire.”

He turned and found Chuy, his lieutenant and the first of his vampire children, moving slowly into the room, his expression reflecting the same revulsion that Xavier himself was feeling.

“Walk carefully, Chuy. I don’t know what’s going on here, but there are almost certainly a few mad ones lurking about.”

“Where will you go, my lord?”

“There’s only one choice, my friend. Forward.” At a grim nod from his lieutenant, Xavier strode deeper into the wrecked mansion, confident that his back was covered.

“Xavier.” A familiar figure appeared in the open doors to what had been Josep’s drawing room.

“Dênis.” It was an effort to keep the dislike from his voice, for all that he and this vampire shared the same Sire, and had lived in Josep’s court at the same time. “You’re alive.”

Dênis gave an elegant shrug. “The one who killed Josep was not a serious, or even intentional, contender for the territory.”

“What does that mean?”

“He attended one of Josep’s weekday receptions. You remember the kind. No one of significance ever bothered, but our Sire felt the need to socialize with the common man . . . for reasons of his own,” he added in distaste. “The assassin, for that’s what he was, maneuvered close to Josep and detonated some sort of magical device. It killed Josep instantly, along with several other vampires. And a few humans,” he said offhandedly.

“Magic. Are you certain?”

“Oh, yes. There was another sorcerer in the crowd. You know, the one who gained such favor with Josep when he restored Sakal’s magic.”

“Sakal?” he repeated and immediately wondered if the sorcerer was involved in this. He’d never forgiven Josep for making him Vampire. But that had been well over one hundred and fifty years ago. Had Sakal been plotting his revenge all this time? “Was Sakal at the reception that day?” he asked Dênis.

“No, he left two days prior for France, with Josep’s permission.”

“And where were you?”

Dênis chuckled. “I didn’t hire the assassin.”

“But you didn’t try to stop him, either, did you? Why did you not protect our Sire, as I would have?”

“You were always his favorite, Xavier. The one who had free access to the most beautiful women, the best horses and accommodations. Did you ever consider what it was like for the rest of us?”

“You let him die.”

“And now Spain is mine.”

“Do you believe you can hold it?” Xavier sneered. “Against me? There was a reason that Josep favored me.”

The other vampire’s expression hardened. “You’ll bow to me before the end. I might even make you kiss my feet.”

He snorted his opinion of that. “How many challengers have you killed so far?”

“More than I can remember. It’s amazing the weaklings who think they can hold power.”

Xavier stared at him lazily. “Yes, it is.”

Dênis growled, fangs bare. “Leave or challenge, you bastard.”

“I’m not the bastard here, Dênis,” he said. “Shall we do this in the courtyard? This building stinks of old blood.”

“Those refined senses of yours too delicate for a little blood?”

“Not as long as it’s yours.” An instant later the defensive shields he’d created from the power of his blood alone sizzled to life, as he deflected the spear of pure energy aimed at his chest. But it hadn’t come from Dênis. He swung his gaze to the right and caught a flash of blond hair. Sending a focused rope of his power to wrap about the fleeing vampire’s throat, he dragged the attacker back into sight.

The vampire emitted a high-pitched whine, struggling to grip the invisible rope around his neck, his eyes rolling white with terror as he silently begged Dênis for aid. Xavier could have told him no help would be coming. Dênis had never cared for those who looked to him for protection. Not even when the one seeking help had risked his life to help Dênis.

“It was a foolish move,” Xavier told the whining vampire. “Did Dênis tell you it would work? That your pitiful attack would be the distraction that gave him the kill? That you’d earn his favor and reward after he was made vampire lord?”

The pathetic vamp had pink tears running down his cheeks, when his gaze switched to Xavier, pleading for his life.

“Will you save him, Dênis? Please, proceed. I’ll wait.”

Dênis’s gaze filled with furious hatred for Xavier. Without so much as a glance, he flicked a hand at the begging vampire. A moment later the pleading vamp fell to the floor, blood soaking his shirt an instant before he fell into a greasy pile of skin and bone that betrayed his youth.

“And that,” Xavier said, pointing at what was left of a vampire who’d been loyal enough to risk his life for his master, “is why you will never be Lord of Spain.”

Dênis’s grin was a vicious baring of teeth. “No. That is why I will wade through your dust to the throne.” A crackling sword of flame shot from his hand as he moved with vampire speed, appearing so close that when he swung the blade, it would have taken Xavier’s head had he not snapped his shields up.

“You never did have a sense of honor,” Xavier said almost cheerfully as he formed his own blade, this one burning blue and gleaming like the finest carbon steel. “Don’t worry. You’ll be too dead to crawl.”

They fought blade to blade at first, fire against steel, heat against ice. Xavier could have taken his opponent in the first few minutes, but it had been a long ride to get there, and his muscles needed warming. And so he fought until he saw sweat beginning to roll down Dênis’s face, until he noted the strikes coming a little slower, carrying a little less force. Until he saw the knowledge in the other vampire’s eyes. Death was imminent, and so unnecessary.

“You should have fled in shame after permitting our Sire to die,” Xavier said.

“O diabo te leva,” Dênis snarled.

Xavier laughed. “The devil? It’s not me he’s after.” In an instant, he’d shifted from the almost comfortable strike, parry, strike they’d been exchanging. Knocking Dênis’s fiery blade aside with a casual blow, he spun the length of his own gleaming weapon in midair, sliced through his enemy’s neck, and stepped back to watch as the vampire’s gaze recognized his own death, then disintegrated into dust.

“Sire.”

Xavier took the wet cloth Chuy offered him. Dênis had been old enough that his death was fairly tidy. But he’d been a big man—not tall, but thickly built—and Josep’s mansion had always been drafty. The dust that had been Dênis floated through the air.

“What now?” Chuy asked, taking the cloth and throwing it aside. This room . . . hell, the entire mansion, was so wrecked that one more piece of debris would hardly matter.

Xavier sighed. He’d hoped to rest in Josep’s basement quarters, but though he hadn’t yet made it downstairs, he doubted it was safe for anyone—human or vampire. “We’ll try my townhouse. It’s been some time since I was in this city. It may have escaped notice. The others?” he added, referring to the two vampires and one human who’d accompanied him to the city.

“Waiting outside, my lord. They have your horse.”

“Good. Let’s go. There’s nothing here for anyone.” It made him sad to realize that was true. He hadn’t cared anything for Josep’s riches. But seeing all this destruction somehow brought the loss home to him, made it real. His Sire was forever gone. And he would miss him.

The trip across the city to the townhouse where Xavier had lived for years, before his growing power had forced him to leave Josep’s city, was mostly uneventful. One misguided vampire chose to confront him, stepping out from a narrow and dark alley to issue his challenge. Xavier was tired and more than a little sad, but he stepped off his horse, handed the reins to Chuy, then confronted the foolish vamp. Without ceremony, and certainly without any resort to his vampire magic, he took two steps, pulled the excellent, but very ordinary, sword from the tooled, leather sheath at his hip and ran it through the challenger’s heart. The vampire’s eyes went wide in surprise, and a little betrayal, Xavier thought. Had he expected a magical battle, rather than cold steel? And had he believed he could win?

He sighed, took back the reins from his lieutenant, and mounted his horse. He wondered sometimes at the foolish arrogance of so many vampires, the ones whose Sires seemed to have taught them nothing of the world. Vampirism gave them a bounty of gifts—greater strength, enhanced senses, virtual immortality. But it bestowed those same gifts on every vampire. And as with every creature in nature, the strong would always triumph over the weak.

He was relieved, when they arrived at the townhouse, to see it undisturbed and intact. He paid a local retainer to see to it, but when one was absent for months at a time, all manner of destruction could occur.

As the sun rose and he drifted into his much needed daytime rest, he thought about the future, and knew two things. He would face more challenges in the coming days, but in but in the end, he would triumph and become the new Lord of Spain.

Book Review: Raphael by D. B. Reynolds

Raphael (Vampires in America #1)
by D.B. Reynolds

Malibu, California-home to rock-and-roll gods and movie stars, the beautiful, the rich . . . and vampires.

Powerful and charismatic, Raphael is a Vampire Lord, one of the few who hold the power of life and death over every vampire in existence. Thousands call him Master and have pledged absolute loyalty on their very lives. But when, in a brazen and deadly daylight attack, a gang of human killers kidnaps the one female vampire he'd give his life for, Raphael turns to a human investigator to find his enemies before it's too late.

Cynthia Leighton is smart, tough and sexy, a private investigator and former cop who's tired of spying on cheating spouses and digging out old bank accounts. When Raphael asks for her help in tracking down the kidnappers, Cyn's happy to accept. But she soon realizes her greatest danger comes not from the humans, but from Raphael himself.

Battling Russian mobsters and treacherous vampires, and betrayed by those they trusted, Cyn and Raphael find themselves fighting for their lives while caught up in a passion of blood and violence that is destined to destroy them both.

This is the new face of RAPHAEL, re-released by BelleBooks on all of the usual e-platforms. For the first time, RAPHAEL is available on Nook and already uploaded to Kobo, Sony, Apple, and all of the others.

Private investigator, Cynthia (Cyn) Leighton is hired by Master Vampire Raphael to look into a kidnapping. An ex-cop, Cyn is the investigator of choice for the West Coast Vampire Community and used to doing things on her own. Her only real problem up till now has been her money hungry, jealous sister. That is, until Raphael sets his sites on her.

Raphael is a very old vampire and used to getting things his way. His children bow down before him, quiver in fear when he's angry and he expects everyone in his path to do what he says and show him respect. But Cyn is unlike any human he's ever met and when she doesn't throw herself at him right away, it not only makes him angry but determined to make her his.

Cyn is hired after a vampire close to Raphael is kidnapped and he needs help finding her since it was humans who helped the vampires pull of the kidnapping. I really liked Cyn's character, she is strong, defiant and doesn't bow down to Raphael like the whimpering humans he's used to.

But I didn't care for Raphael's character at all. He's sadistic, dark, and expects everyone to cower before him. There are no cute sparkly vampires here. In fact, Raphael would fit right into one of those black and white Boris Karloff vampire movies where the vamps are dark, brooding, throat ripping creatures of the night. Of course he has a soft spot for Cyn, and that helped redeem his character a little.

The one thing I don't like in books I read are cliff hangers and that's what we get with this book. I like my stories to have a beginning, middle and end and hopefully a HEA. But that's not what I got with this book. When I got to the last page and read, "To be continued." I actually turned back a page and then looked a page ahead to see if it was a joke, unfortunately, it wasn't.

Book Review: ADEN (Vampires In America, Book 7) book tour + giveaway

ADEN
Vampires In America, Book 7
Driven by the demons of his past and the power of his vampire blood, Aden is determined to become the next Lord of the Midwest.
But as powerful vampires line up and the battles begin, Sidonie Reid walks into his life with a challenge he cannot ignore.

Vampires are running slaves out of Chicago, and Sidonie wants Aden to shut them down, permanently!

AVAILABLE NOW:

Review
Aden is an extremely powerful vampire and most likely the next in line to become the Midwestern Vampire Lord. Before he was turned into a vampire he was a sex slave for a cruel master, so when he finds out that another vampire is kidnapping woman and selling them in the slave network, he's more than a little angry about it.

Sidonie (Sid) is a reporter trying to stop the slave trade. The slave traders find out she's snooping around and to send her a message they kill a woman she knows, hoping that will deter her from snooping further. It in fact, does the exact opposite and she's more determined to find a way to stop the slavers now more than ever.

This is the first book in the Vampires In America series that I've read and while my 'go to' genre is paranormal romance involving vampires, there are just a select few series that I keep going back to, this will be one of those series. D.B. Reynolds has created a vampire society with characters full of depth, charm and charisma. This is a welcome addition to the wonderful vampires series we already have available.

The only element that I would have liked to see more of is Aden's dominant side. We get teases and glimpses into it, but it would have taken this story to a whole other level had he let loose a little bit more and shown us more of this side of himself.

Aden is a fast paced, adventurous look into a vampire society and I am looking forward to reading more.

I give this book 4 sheep

Book Review: Hunted by DB Reynolds (Blog Tour + giveaway)

Inline image 1
Hunted: A Cyn & Raphael Novella (Vampires in America #6.5)
by D.B. Reynolds
Power, it comes down to this... those who have it, those who want it.

Revenge, the need for it is a fire in the soul, a goad for the unwise.

Hunted, the fate of the foolish when they think to become the hunter.

The Lord of the Midwest is dead, and the powerful vampires of North America are gathering to choose his successor. The Vampire Council will be there to oversee the competition and to keep the violence to a bloody minimum, including Raphael, who will do whatever it takes to ensure the victor is a vampire he can trust. But someone is determined to stop Raphael and his mate, Cyn, from ever reaching Chicago, a hunter who may soon become... the hunted.

This is bridge novella that connects Lucas (Vampires in America #6) to the next release Aden. It introduces us to Aden and sets the stage for the story arc. What I loved most about these bridge novellas is we get more Raphael and Cyn action. The novella is told from their POV and makes a perfect way to segue between books.

Reynolds does an excellent job of coming up with a quick and interesting, action packed storyline for Raphael and Cyn while advancing the series story arc. I personally don’t care for erotica, but if you like naughty vampire sex you will get plenty in Hunted. It was great to see Lucas and Kathryn again. I love Lucas’s mischievous personality and how he interacts with the always serious Raphael. Cyn and Kathryn hit it off and are both strong female characters. We meet Aden and he is a chauvinistic ass. He doesn't think much of women and believes they are best seen and not heard. It will be interesting to see him put in his place by a woman.

One thing I love about Reynolds’s vampires is the old school alpha vampire attitudes. They are violent and scary powerful, as in can turn lesser vampires to dust with just a thought. I like the direction the series arc is taking with the American vampires and the European ones. This is a great series if you like hot vampire sex, alphas and the women who tame them… sort of <G>.

Book Review: Lucas (Vampires in America #6) by D.B. Reynolds

Lucas (Vampires in America #6) by D.B. Reynolds

THE BADLANDS of SOUTH DAKOTA … haunting landscapes, legendary outlaws, and … vampires?

LUCAS DONLON is a Vampire Lord, one of the most powerful vampires in North America and beyond. Charming and irreverent to his friends and lovers, he enjoys everything about his life as a vampire. But when a neighboring vampire lord declares war, he soon discovers that Lucas is as every bit as lethal as he is charming.

KATHRYN HUNTER doesn’t care about powerful vampires or their wars. Her baby brother is missing and she will do anything to find him, even if it means going against both her FBI bosses and the local vampire lord. But Lucas Donlon has other plans for the lovely FBI agent who’s landed on his doorstep.
Waging war against their enemies and each other, Lucas and Kathryn will risk everything to keep the most deadly vampire war in hundreds of years from engulfing every vampire, and human, in North America.

A while back I read Raphael (Book #1) and absolutely loved it. Reynolds's vampire lords were old school and powerful with telekinetic abilities and a psychic connection to their fledglings, as well as being territorial and non-repentant about what they are. Then she adds that little bit of soft and chewy center in their heart to make a tasty box of vampire chocolates. As if that wasn't enough, Reynolds creates smart, kick-ass women to bring these bad boys to their knees. Weave that into a solid storyline and BAM! Happy reader.

Even though this is the sixth book in the series, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. It is a PNR and the sex is on the erotic side, but it is much more than that. There is a strong and tight mystery going on that I wasn't able to figure out till the end as well as some secondary plots to keep things moving. We get satisfying closure at the end, but also an exciting lead into the next book.

Lucas is fun and sexy with a nice dark edge to him, while Kathryn is strong and relatable. I really enjoy how Reynolds structured the story; Lucas and Kathryn both have their own storyline and conflict that eventually merge to create a romantic storyline too. In the beginning we flip between their POVs and get to know each one separately. It is funny how they are both dreading the meeting they must have about Kathryn’s brother’s disappearance and neither have any idea how this will change their lives, but we do <G>. Reynolds has done an excellent job of balancing the series story arc with the romantic book story arc.

Dark, sexy and action packed, this series is a must read for any vampire PNR fan.

Interview: DB Reynolds + give away

Today we have Vampires in America author D.B. Reynolds and "she's on a boat!" heehee, tell me you guys get that reference (NSFW)? The next book in her sexy vampire series Lucas just released so we asked a few questions about it along with more pertinent ones like if she prefers dirty cowboys or dirty firemen and what she would blow up if she could get away with it. If you stick around you have a chance to enter for winner's choice of any of her books! Sorry, we aren't giving away the dirty cowboys and firemen this time.

Welcome to the Flock! Have you heard that silly rumor about us and duct tape and flogging? Oh, you haven’t…never mind! *nervous laughing*

he is mine!
Sharon: Let’s give the readers who don’t know you or your Vampires In America *Raphael is mine* series a little crash course. Tell us about *Raphael is mine* the series as a whole. We also need to know what the future of the series is *Raphael is mine*
DBR: I think Cyn might have something to say about the *Raphael is mine* part. (laugh)  But let’s see what I can do with the rest of it. Vampires in America basically tells the story of the eight Vampire Lords who rule all of the vampires in North America. Each Vampire Lord rules a territory of his own, with the lesser vampires quite literally dependent upon him/her for their next breath. My vampires are powerful, aggressive, ruthless, bloody and violent, but also gorgeous, sexy and totally devoted to their chosen mates.
Sharon: Don’t forget the great sex!
DBR: Yeah, they've had hundreds of years to perfect their techniques in bed (and out of it) so they’re pretty talented. And vampires have tremendous stamina, plus they recover very quickly, which means they can practice their talent over and over again. <EG>
Sharon: I wonder if this is why Katie loves vamps so much….hmmm
Katie: "Stamina" I say no more.

Sharon: Lucas comes out at the end of the month. He is the sixth vampire you have written about. Do you have a favorite vamp or storyline in the series?
DBR: That’s like asking a mother if she has a favorite child. But since we all know that mothers DO have favorites among their children, I’ll admit that Rajmund is a sentimental favorite of mine.  Though now that I’ve met Lucas, it’s a toss-up, because he’s such a sweetheart. A bloodthirsty sweetheart, to be sure, but still …

Sharon: Is there a scene you had to cut in revisions that you really didn’t want to do, but had to? What do you do with the darlings you kill?
DBR: There are always scenes that end up being cut, but they never get deleted from my hard drive. I have a special file for each novel called Deleted Scenes, and every time I delete a significant scene or part of a scene, I stick it in there, because you never know when you’ll want to go back and retrieve your brilliant prose. Plus it hurts too much to throw them away. Most of the scenes that have been cut so far were cut in the first draft, before I ever sent it to my publisher. But with Rajmund, there was a miscommunication with my publisher about how long the book could go, and I had to cut one of my favorite scenes. That’s the airport scene with Cyn and Raphael arriving in New York and being greeted by Rajmund, though that particular scene is available on my website, so my readers still get to enjoy it.
Sharon: As a fan, I appreciate it when authors put deleted scenes on their sites. So thanks!

Sharon: You also have a werewolf novella. Are you looking to branch out with a different series any time soon? If so, what kind?
DBR: I’m currently working on the first book of a new urban fantasy series, that features werewolves, demons and humans, with a werewolf male and a half-demon human female as the lead protagonists. I also have a science fiction romance that is centered around genetically modified cat/human shapeshifters on a distant planet. The first book is already written, though I need to do a round of revisions before it goes anywhere.

Sharon: both sound interesting. These genetically modified shapeshifters…um, are they modified in any “special” way? *hint-hint, wink-wink*
DBR:  LOL  Their ancestors started out as humans, or rather their ancestral DNA did. That was the modification, from regular human to big cat shifter. I will say, however, that they’re some pretty fine specimens of male.  Very, very alpha.

Katie: If you had to fight a fictional charter, villain or otherwise, with your bare hands who would it be and why?
DBR: Me personally? And I can’t have a gun? Bummer. I guess I’d go for a zombie, because I’m in reasonably good shape, I can change direction quickly, and I’m ruthless. Plus, I can always grab a flamethrower with my bare hands.
Sharon: I would have gone with Spongebob SquarePants. He would be easy to take and I could use him to clean up the kitchen when I was done <G>
DBR:  Yeah, but as Lucas would say, where’s the fun in that? If you’re gonna fight, you need a little challenge. Not too much, mind you, I want to enjoy my chocolate cake at the end of the day, but just enough challenge to get the blood pumping!

Sharon: You have been given the keys to a Ferrari for the weekend. Where would you like to drive it?
DBR: That’s easy. I live in Southern California. I’d hop in the Ferrari and head down the Canyon to the coast, then turn right and make a run up Pacific Coast Highway, going as far as I could before I had to turn around. Then I’d stop for lunch, and watch the waves, maybe see some dolphins or a whale or two, and then climb back in the Ferrari and head south for home.  And then, I’d go visit my local spa and get a massage, because Ferraris aren’t all that comfortable. LOL
Sharon: What car would you have preferred? And who would you take with you? (Fictional or otherwise)
DBR:  I’d go for a high performance luxury sedan, with a sun roof. And, if I could take anyone with me I wanted … I’ll take one of my own guys, probably Raj. But I get to drive.

Katie: What's the weirdest thing you've been asked?
DBR: Honestly, the weirdest thing I’ve been asked was your question about whom I’d like to fight barehanded! My heroines all have guns.
Katie: Awesome. I get weird points! *fist pumps*
Sharon: I think you have more than your fair share of those...*smack* ouch!

Sharon: What would your last meal be?
DBR: Pot roast and mashed potatoes, with biscuits and gravy. And, if I must, I’d eat a carrot or two. Oh, and chocolate cake for dessert. With chocolate chip ice cream.
Sharon: This is your last meal…you don’t have to eat veggies if you don’t want to <G>
DBR: I appreciate that!

Katie: An armored car crashes and all the money flies out...what would you do?
Sharon: We are so going to judge you by your answer…
DBR: Oh darn, I’d like to keep at least some of it, but I’d probably gather it up in neat stacks and give it back. Shit.
DBR: It’s a mark of my character that I answered that question before I saw your comment!

Sharon: If you could blow something up, what would it be?
DBR: Geez, you’re a violent bunch! Unfortunately, everything I want to blow up has political significance, and I try to be apolitical, so …..
Sharon: We think our violent tendencies are connected to the Kool Aid…want some?
DBR: Yes, please. It’s so freeing to lose one’s inhibitions! <G>
Sharon: Oh, we check those at the door ;)

This is our Rapid Fire round. Grab a bat cause they will be coming at you fast!

hungry yet?
Katie: Over easy or Scrambled?
DBR: No question. Scrambled.
Sharon: I like mine mixed with grits and bacon!
DBR:  A little sharp cheddar is always welcome.

Sharon: Coke or Pepsi?
DBR: Doesn’t matter, as long as it’s Diet.
Sharon: Oh, never got that answer… but if you HAD to pick... (We are having a “friendly” competition about this)
DBR: If I HAD to pick, then Coke, Diet, Cherry. J
Katie: More points for Team Coke!!!

Katie: Clue or Monopoly?
DBR: Clue. I like mysteries.
Sharon: Me to, but I think I like money more <G>
DBR: Only if I get to be the banker.
Sharon: You have proven your character already so I guess that will work

Sharon: Crunchy center or chewy center?
DBR: Neither one. I like cream centers.

Katie: Wine tasting or Grocery store food samples?
DBR: Wine tasting.

Sharon: Giving or taking?
DBR: Giving.

Katie: Sexy legs or Sexy Hair?
DBR: Sexy hair.

Sharon: Dirty cowboy or dirty fireman?
DBR: Eeeeeeek. Um. Cowboy, I guess, because Lucas is my cowboy.
oh, decisions...decisions...
Sharon: *refraining from making naughty cowboy comments*
DBR: Like what? (blinks innocently)

Katie: Skipping or Spinning?
DBR: Skipping.

Sharon: Bite or lick?
DBR: Lick.
Sharon: thinking of those cowboys?

Katie: Mountain hike or Lake swim?
DBR: Lake swim.

Thanks for playing with us! See? No duct tape…<G> Is there anything you want to let the readers know before you go?
