What started out as a routine task to find blood turned into an onslaught of pain. I rubbed my eyes, allowing the darkness that filled my head to fizzle away. My hands, tender from scraping against the gravel, grasped at the cold metal fence. I flinched as my cuts burned against the steel. I’d done this to myself. The thumping under my skin and my lack of balance were all a result of ignoring my need to feed.

Now here I sat, watching my blood as it dripped down my leg and pooled onto the sidewalk. A tingling sensation ran through me as I flicked out the tiny shards that had embedded themselves in my skin. My body helped to push them out in an effort to heal itself. This was not part of tonight’s plan. I stared back up at the fence—my nemesis. Razor-sharp wire wrapped itself around the top of the rusty, twelve-foot-high chain-link barricade.

Take the shortcut, Tasi. It’ll be quicker and safer, Tasi. What a stupid idea.

Under normal circumstances, I could dart up the fence, hop over the barbed wire, and gracefully land on my feet. My overall dexterity might have won me a gold medal in gymnastics, but that was so not happening in my current condition.

An ache thundered through my body as I reached for the fence again. I hoisted myself up for the first time since tumbling off. With one last labored breath, I ran my hands down my pants, dislodging the remaining rocks from my newly healed skin. Nearby, a rustling sound echoed through the alley. My breath caught. The metal garbage cans clanked together as if they were being tossed around. If I were human, I wouldn’t think twice about the commotion. Lucky for me, I knew better. It was probably setting up to kill its next victim. There were a few shady-looking dive bars and run-down nightclubs in this area. The repetitive pounding of music stemming from different directions would drown out all screams. This was a perfect feeding ground.

Over the past few months, these creatures had become my reality. Since I was thirteen, I’d known of their existence, but only recently had I been in the same vicinity as them. And when they were around, you didn’t want to be, so it was time to go.

With a quick pivot in the opposite direction, I ran. I didn’t get farther than a few feet before my shoelace caught in the grate and my chin scraped against the ground. More blood dripped from my body.

Tasi, seriously—what else can go wrong?

Wrapping the shoelace around my fingers, I yanked until it released itself. By the time I tucked it into my shoe, it was too late. It had heard me. The pounding in my ears was no longer from the nightclubs but the pavement, and it was getting louder. I’d piqued its interest. Rather, my blood had piqued its interest.

REVIEW

I'm a little torn on this one. It's kinda-sorta a sex slave type of tale, but is it really? I mean, it's not real. (least I hope not) So why did it, in parts, rub me the wrong way. Almost like sandpaper on my tongue. I had to ponder that a lot. 

Maybe it's the fact that our leading gal is forced into a sex trade and judged by her performance. Are woman meant to be so mistreated even in make believe books? I am just not sure how to give a rating review, when the foundation of the story was so hard to absorb. I liked the writing style as a whole, very descriptive and not lacking in details. The world overall was very layered and executed extremely well. For a short read, you really do get a lot. 

I'm going to say that this one is the first in a very, very, very long time that I can not give a rating to. Check out what other people are saying and hopefully you can decide if this is the right PNR for you.

“I want to know where you’re taking me,” she said as he pulled her around switchbacks in the tunnel, her breath heavy at his side, her skin so hot against his he was starting to sweat.

He didn’t owe her an explanation. She was lucky he hadn’t decided to kill her after the way she’d lashed out. Or taken her to Zeus already. The second he’d recognized her he’d decided not to do either, though. Not because she didn’t deserve one or both but because he had his own plans for her. Plans that didn’t include the King of the fucking Gods, at least not yet.

Eventually he knew Zeus would want her back for punishment, which could include anything from having her reassigned as a servant or handmaiden or even a sex slave. And though Erebus wasn’t wild about any of those options—especially the last, unless she was his sex slave—he knew he had time. Time to have his own fun before his life-long obligations to Olympus drew him back.

Hell, he deserved some fun after the years he’d spent in servitude, didn’t he? As far as he was concerned, he deserved more than a little fun simply because he had to deal with Zeus’s incompetent Siren trainees on a daily f*cking basis.

“I’m taking you to the half-breed ruins,” he said, tugging her around another corner in the dark, deciding he didn’t want her completely defiant. Oh, he enjoyed an adrenaline-amping fight now and then, but it was so much more enjoyable when he could coax a female’s reluctance into cries of sensual pleasure. With Sera’s nymphomaniac tendencies, he knew it wouldn’t take much persuading.

“No one’s there,” she argued. “The half-breed ruins have been empty for twenty-some years.”

Exactly. No one was there. No one could hear her screams from inside its walls. No one would even know a minor god had gone off the grid there with a cheeky little nymph who made him so hard he hurt.

She tugged against this grip. “Erebus, please. This is a bad id—”

It was the please that brought him around. Or maybe it was the way she said his name. He wasn’t sure which, but something in her voice made him whip back and push her up against the cold rock wall.

Book Review: Hunted by DB Reynolds (Blog Tour + giveaway)

Hunted: A Cyn & Raphael Novella (Vampires in America #6.5)

This is bridge novella that connects Lucas (Vampires in America #6) to the next release Aden. It introduces us to Aden and sets the stage for the story arc. What I loved most about these bridge novellas is we get more Raphael and Cyn action. The novella is told from their POV and makes a perfect way to segue between books.

Reynolds does an excellent job of coming up with a quick and interesting, action packed storyline for Raphael and Cyn while advancing the series story arc. I personally don’t care for erotica, but if you like naughty vampire sex you will get plenty in Hunted. It was great to see Lucas and Kathryn again. I love Lucas’s mischievous personality and how he interacts with the always serious Raphael. Cyn and Kathryn hit it off and are both strong female characters. We meet Aden and he is a chauvinistic ass. He doesn't think much of women and believes they are best seen and not heard. It will be interesting to see him put in his place by a woman.

One thing I love about Reynolds’s vampires is the old school alpha vampire attitudes. They are violent and scary powerful, as in can turn lesser vampires to dust with just a thought. I like the direction the series arc is taking with the American vampires and the European ones. This is a great series if you like hot vampire sex, alphas and the women who tame them… sort of <G>.

Phoenix Comicon 2013: Interview Author Kevin Hearne + Giveaway

Phoenix Comicon 2013 was action packed with authors galore! We got the chance to sit down and chat with NYT bestselling author Kevin Hearne. This is one UF series you need to read! 

Katie: Hello Kevin, so wonderful to see you again here at the Convention! How has life and writing been treating you over the past year? 

Kevin: It's treated me remarkably well. I've finished six books and now I'm contracted to write seven more—one Star Wars novel, three more Iron Druid books, and an epic.

Katie: Wow, Wow, Wow. A Star Wars novel?! You gotta tell me more! 

Kevin: Well, since I'm under an NDA I can't tell you much except what's been publicly announced: I'm writing a standalone adventure set between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back featuring Luke, Han, Chewie, and Leia. 

Katie: The Iron Druid series has been a stellar hit for the reading community, what's been the most exciting thing, for you, being here at this convention? 

Kevin: I get to hang out with fabulous humans like Cherie Priest and Delilah Dawson and my other writer friends. Writers so rarely come out of their caves. It's nice to be social with other writers and visit with the readers who make it all possible.

Katie: Do you all plan evenings out? Cause mayhem in the streets of Downtown Phoenix? If so, I'm totally in! 

Kevin: Mostly we grin at each other and then realize after about two minutes that we don't have a drink in our hands. For social misfits that's a bloody crisis. So we go somewhere to get some liquid courage and then resume grinning. 

Katie: You sit on a number of panels with fellow authors, what's the most interesting piece of information folks can learn during one of these sit downs? 

Kevin: I'm not sure that I ever learn things myself because I'm usually too occupied with geeking out to process anything. A panel could be laying down some profound stuff but I'd miss it all because my brain would be going OMG I'M CONVERTING OXYGEN TO CARBON DIOXIDE IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO JOHN SCALZI.

Katie: Do fans ever ask if you can personally practice magic? 

Kevin: Ha! Yes, I've had a few. Some are convinced I'm a Druid or starting my own religion.

Katie: Which, you totally are. Ok lesson one of being a Druid, teach me something. 

Kevin: In the forest you're always being watched. It's not paranoid if it's true.

Katie: The next edition in your series, Hunted, hits shelves next month (June) what can we all look forward to? Spoilers please?!  

Kevin: There was about a twelve-year gap between TRICKED and TRAPPED, but HUNTED picks up about two minutes after the end of TRAPPED. We'll meet some old enemies and old friends, but also get a new bad guy, a new good girl, and oh my god cravats and what lies beyond the library of graphic novels...!

Katie: New bad guys? Are they hot. This is VERY important! 

Kevin: t is? Well, he thinks he's hot. Whether that's true or not is debatable.

Katie: Did you have posters on your wall growing up? If so, who and why? 

Kevin: I didn't, actually. I think I had paintings by my grandma on the walls. All the stuff I wanted to look at was in comic books. POW! and KER-BIFF!

Katie: Well then I must know, favorite comic arc?  

Kevin: I love CHEW by Jon Layman and Rob Guillory. I'll take any arc of theirs right now. But in days of yore I loved The Kindly Ones by Neil Gaiman in Sandman.

Katie: If every time you walked into a room a song would play, what would be and why?

Kevin: "Calling All Crows" by State Radio. It makes me happy and you kinda have to groove to it.

Katie: To date, the best costume you've seen at this convention? 

Kevin: Leeloo from the Fifth Element. The girl spoke in tongues and everything. Biiiiiig bada-boom.

Katie: Chicken, goooood! 

Kevin: Multipass!

Katie: You know we have to do some rapid fire questions! Sit back and hang onto your chair! 

Katie: Terrible nickname or a terrible tattoo?

Nickname. Because if I have to get stabbed hundreds of times with a needle I'd damn well better look pretty afterward.

Katie: Captain Malcolm Reynolds or Captain James T Kirk? 

Mal.

Katie: Rule Earth or Mars? 

Mars. I'd get far fewer complaints that way, considering the population.

Katie: Sexy Nurse or Sexy Teacher? 

Sexy teacher. I'm married to one.

Katie: Yeow! Winner, winner chicken dinner! 

Chee-KAN! GOOD!

Katie: Design a watch or a suit? 

Watch.

Katie: First gadget it would have?

It would deliver programmed messages on the hour from 6am to 6pm and nothing else.

6 am: "Your ass is gonna need some coffee if you're gonna deal with this shit."

7 am: "You might wanna take a shower as a public service."

8 am: "Hell YES it's time for more coffee."

9 am: "If you don't write a thousand words today I'm going to leap up offa your wrist and punch you in the mouth."

10 am: "The dogs need to urinate on other people's plants. Take 'em for a walk."

11 am: "Get off Twitter and write something!"

12 pm: "It's lunchtime, but don't stop writing if you're in the groove. And don't stop believing. Hold on to that feeling. And what the fuck are street light people?"

1 pm: "Your Pandora channels are getting stale and you need to make a new one but don't spend more than five minutes dicking around. You have a book to write."

2 pm: "Oh, you're tired? Well, allow me to retort. Chuck Wendig wrote three books and a blog this morning and he's a gourmet cook too. Keep working!"

3 pm: "Woohoo, it's happy hour, my man!"

4 pm: "Hey, you see this mess in the house? You better clean this shit up before your wife gets home."

5 pm: "Time to get started cooking dinner. Remember that you're supposed to use vegetables this time, all right?"

6 pm: "Okay, dude, you can relax now. Get yourself a comic book and geek out."

[Sorry folks, we had a nerd moment and just don't care!]

Katie: Jog or Speed walk? 

Do I have to?

Katie: Bagel or Muffin? 

To quote Aerosmith back in their days of coke and whiskey, "You ain't seen nuthin' till you been down on a muffin."

Katie: Learn battle techniques from a viking or a ninja? 

Viking. I want to drink in the mead hall afterward.
