Writer Jeremy Whitley weighed in on the second book in the series:

“School for Extraterrestrial Girls, for us, was an opportunity to play in this fun space of BIG sci-fi (aliens, different worlds, different species) and at the same time ground it in very real feelings of coming of age. Tara is a kid who's had her whole life set out for her by her parents and has done what they said without question. She's bookish, studious, and ambitious. However, when she spontaneously combusts in the middle of class one day, her whole world is turned upside down as she learns that her parents aren't really her parents and they've been hiding from her the fact that she's actually an alien her whole life. She's given the choice of being sent back to her people's homeworld or learning how to be "a good earthling" at the School for Extraterrestrial Girls. For Tara, that isn't even really a choice. She's lived her whole life on Earth and has no idea what would await her on her home planet, so she has to join the school.

Obviously, in a lot of ways this is not so different from choices that real kids face about their lives all the time, it's just on a way way bigger scale. She also begins developing these relationships with her classmates that are strained by who they are and where they come from, but all the more intense because of where and how they're forming them. Not unlike normal high school, they're incredibly different people pushed into this high pressure situation and trying to make relationships with others while they're still figuring out who they are. Added with Jamie's fun, colorful, Tokusatsu (“Tokusastu" is a Japanese term for a live action show or film that uses practical special effects. Godzilla, Power Rangers, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider are all examples of tokusatsu that influenced Book 2) influenced art, I think it's a fun and light read that will really stick with the people who need it.

This series is really important to us, because we get to do the best of both worlds. We get to have the high drama of high school right alongside the giant aliens and monsters. And that, I think, captures the feeling of what it's like to be in high school better than the real thing. At some point in their time in high school, everybody feels like an alien."

School for Extraterrestrial Girls #1: Girl on Fire

Tara Smith’s parents are super strict with all their rules and routines, and Tara is a dutiful daughter. Rule #1: No friends her own age. Rule #2: keep her bracelet on, or else. But when she breaks her routine—and then loses her bracelet—she’s in trouble.

Now outed as an extraterrestrial after wielding fire and losing her humanoid form, Tara is captured by the government. She’s given two options: get shipped far away where she won’t be a danger to anyone or stay on Earth and join a school for other extraterrestrial girls like her. Things at the school aren’t easy—especially for the girl whose only friends were textbooks. But Tara’s goal to learn how to control her powers is soon sidelined by the discovery that the people she’s called Mom and Dad all these years aren’t her parents.

MINISERIES PREMIERE

The smash-hit horror anthology based on the hit Shudder TV series is back and CREEPIER than ever!

In the debut issue, master of the macabre GARTH ENNIS (Preacher, The Boys) and superstar creator BECKY CLOONAN (Wonder Woman) team up for the very first time to deliver a disturbing tale of the unborn!

Then, freaky PHIL HESTER (Gotham City: Year One) tells the story of a grieving son who bends the laws of nature to see his mother one last time…this can’t end well!

Each issue of CREEPSHOW, VOL. 2 will feature different creative teams with uniquely horrifying standalone stories and a 1:10 connecting cover from iconic horror artist SKINNER!

It's baaaack! Volume 2 #1 of Creepshow starts us off with two stories of madness and monsters (of the humankind).

The first story "Make Your Choice" is about religious hypocrisy and retribution. The subject matter could be disturbing and I was surprised at how dark it went...but it makes its point. I'm with the writer on this one.

The second story "Fossil Record" Is a new take on an old horror classic, the zombie. It also has a classic horror ending...was it real or was it all in his head (pun intended! LOLOL)? If you read this issue you'll realize how funny that joke was.

Some people like to read horror, but not "see" horror. Some like to "see" horror but not read it. Then there are those of us who love both! With awesome storytelling and talented artists, Creepshow brings to life what we've been craving.

The Ravencrest Saga: Volumes I, II, III by Tamara Thorne & Alistair Cross + giveaway

The Ravencrest Saga: Volumes I, II, III
by Tamara Thorne & Alistair Cross
Genre: Gothic, Paranormal
March 29, 2022
Book 1: THE GHOSTS OF RAVENCREST
Ravencrest Manor is the most beautiful thing new governess, Belinda Moorland, has ever seen, but as she learns more about its tangled past of romance and terror, she realizes that beauty has a dark side. Ravencrest is built on secrets, and its inhabitants seem to be keeping plenty of their own -- from the English butler, Grant Phister, to the power-mad administrator, Mrs. Heller, to Belinda's mysterious and handsome new employer, Eric Manning, who watches her with dark, fathomless eyes. But Belinda soon realizes that the living who dwell in Ravencrest have nothing on the other inhabitants -- the ones who walk the darkened halls by night … the ones who enter her dreams … the ones who are watching … and waiting …

Book 2: THE WITCHES OF RAVENCREST
Governess Belinda Moorland has settled into life at Ravencrest and, as summer gives way to autumn, romance is in the air. She and multi-millionaire Eric Manning are falling in love … but powerful forces will stop at nothing to keep them apart. As the annual Harvest Ball is set to begin, evil abounds at Ravencrest. Murder lurks in the shadows, evil spirits freely roam the halls, a phantom baby cries, signaling a death in the mansion, and in the notoriously haunted east wing, three blood-soaked nuns, Sisters Faith, Hope, and Charity, tend to the demented needs of a maid gone mad.

Ravencrest has come to life. In the gardens below, granite statues dance by moonlight, and a scarecrow goes on a killing rampage, collecting a gruesome assortment of body parts from unwilling donors … But Belinda’s greatest danger is the vengeful spirit of Rebecca Dane. Once the mistress of Ravencrest, Rebecca Dane has a centuries-old axe to grind with the powerful witch, Cordelia Heller -- and Belinda becomes her weapon of choice.

Book 3: EXORCISM
In the 1920s, Henry Manning ruled Ravencrest with an iron fist. He held debauched parties that would have inspired Jay Gatsby himself. From the Manning fortune to a beautiful wife, the silent film star known as the White Violet, Henry had it all … including a loyal cult that worshipped him, and the demon Forneus. Violet lost her life putting a stop to the demented perversions that Henry and his demonic familiar visited upon Ravencrest … but now that evil has returned.

In the night, an innocent maid is seduced by a demon lover. A child is born, but it is not of this earth. Father Antonio DeVargas is summoned as ghostly parties light up the old poolhouse and phantom screams rip open the night. Meanwhile, the White Violet wanders the halls of Ravencrest warning the inhabitants of death and disaster to come. . . and the current master of Ravencrest, Eric Manning, is decidedly not himself.

Excerpt:
The Spring in the Desert
Wynne F. Winters
Silas rested her back against a large rock, grateful for the little shade it offered. Red dust danced in the heated wind around her, sticking to the tan skin beneath her tattered clothes. The mountain pass walls stretched hundreds of feet high, but with midday approaching shadows were minimal. The sun beat down relentlessly, with not a single cloud to dull its might. There rarely was — it hadn’t rained here for nearly 100 years.

Silas sucked on the flat stone in her mouth, trying not to think of water. That was the commodity these days — people lied for it, stole for it — even killed for it. When the drought first began no one seemed too concerned — there were water mages aplenty, enough to pull the blessed substance from the ground, and even the air. But then fewer and fewer were born every year, until mages of any kind were considered worth their weight in gold. Any water mages now living were kept under lock and key by the warlords who ruled the vast desert, forcing anyone who wanted access to bend the knee.

Or, like Silas, steal from those people.

Something stirred around the bend in the road, jolting Silas from her reverie.

She knelt, resting her fingers against the ground and closing her eyes. She detected a faint vibration, the sensation growing stronger moment by moment. Quarry.

Moving quickly Silas stood and pocketed her flat stone, already tasting the sparkling water on her tongue. The mountain pass lay between two of the largest warlord compounds, meaning anyone who wanted to travel to one or the other had to make their way through. Silas wasn’t stupid enough to try robbing any of the official convoys, but unaccompanied travelers — they were ripe for the picking.

From what Silas had felt there was one on their way right now.

“The Hound of Oakenhall” - When a masterless knight takes a contract to kill an invincible beast, he is thrust into a mystery where nothing—even the monster—is what it seems...

Morgan Bane, the heir of Bane’s Academy of akashic magic, has found more love in Tatu’s crime syndicate than his own family. Mostly consisting of an oppressed goblin race, the Syndicate is skeptical of a boy with so much privilege. To prove his loyalty, Morgan must sever the hand of Graft Agoseris, the most bloodthirsty enforcer on the island and, more importantly, the father of his first love. Death in all families is inevitable, and Morgan must make the final choice between them.

"With Stunted Wings", follows a pair of unconventional twins, fairies each born with only one full wing as they navigate a world designed around flight. Blending their elemental powers with potions, resurrection spells, and soul magic, they explore just how far one will go to get what they've always desired.

"Dith the fire witch: A Night Order story" In this preindustrial world, humans have been pushed to the brink of extinction. Only witches and rogues have the skill to take on the demon hordes. Edith, Dith to some, has been blood gifted the rare magic of fire. Whether the hunt leads her into the depths of a drowner lake or skin-wearer infested woods, she'll walk away with demon heads. But the demons are once again rallying armies, and Dith can't take them all on by herself.

Selah's Manga Mania Reviews: Uzumaki (3-in-1 Deluxe Edition) by Junji Ito

Uzumaki (3-in-1 Deluxe Edition): Includes vols. 1, 2 & 3
by Junji Ito
October 16, 2018
Volumes: 3
648 pages
English publisher: NA Viz Media
Seinen horror manga
Genres: Visual novel, Simulation Video Game, Dark fantasy, Horror fiction, Occult Fiction
Appearing as a serial in the weekly manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999.
Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world. The bizarre masterpiece horror manga is now available all in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!

It's time to think about stories that freak us out, and Japanese horror has a certain something that just pushes things over the edge and down a cliff. Today, we're looking at one of the greatest authors in the genre and one of his most infamous titles. Today, we're looking at Uzumaki by Junji Ito.

We follow teenager Kirie and her boyfriend Shuichi as they slowly realize something is very wrong with their town and the people in it. It all begins with Shuichi's father's fascination with spirals that becomes an obsession, and then something otherworldly.

The good: This is a freaky series and I really like that the omnibus version collects it all in one place. While this is more surreal than other Ito titles which are more classic horror, the scare factor is definitely there. As the spiral obsession and paranoia jumps from person to person and then starts to physically affect the structure of the town and people's bodies in inhuman ways, the reading experience becomes really disturbing.
My stomach dropped at scenes like Shuichi's mom puncturing her ear because she realized there was a spiral in the bones in it. The debate as people turned into snail creatures as to whether they could be used for food or if they were still human is intense. How villagers take shelter in the bunkhouses lets you know you've passed the point of no return.

Ito portrays the line between rational and madness very well, both in his pacing and art. You can physically see the moment where characters fall over the edge or give up, adding to the feeling over impending doom that builds through the story. As the town changes, you realize that this is way bigger than a few peoples' obsessions. I'd call it cosmic horror with patterns instead of monsters, honestly. And the ending took the breath out of me because it's quieter than I expected, but it really capped things well.

Ito's art is exceptional, and the vast amount of ways he incorporates spirals into body horror, architecture, and natural landscapes are impressive. It feels like he's really in his element.

The bad: if you want definite logic as to why things are happening, this will likely frustrate you. There is a reason, but it's vague. I would say the story is more about the effect the spirals have on people and the futility of their fight and just how wrong the decision to stay in town is. This is more surreal vs outright horror compared to something like Tomie, but it still has that Ito feel.
Some of the characters are a little one-dimensional, but in this case, it all pushes the plot forward and showcases the insane vignettes and variations on the spiral theme. He's taking you on a tour via these scenes, and it's your job to see how you feel about them. It won't be everyone's cuppa.

The ick: While a lot of the dramatic violence is off-screen, this is Ito, which means body horror. Contorted anatomy, mutations beyond the realm of physics, melty bodies, and characters in agony - it's kinda his thing. If looking at this isn't something you want to see, this title isn't for you.

Overall, while I would have liked a little more characterization and at times the pace can feel a little meandery, I felt the story super-fascinating and the art insane. I read it all in one night if that tells you anything. If you're looking for a story to get under your skin and never want to see spirals innocently again, this is for you.

Book Review: The Demon Accords Compendium Vol. 2 (Stories from the Demon Accords Universe) by John Conroe

The Demon Accords Compendium Vol. 2 (Stories from the Demon Accords Universe)
by John Conroe
May 13, 2018
Pages: 77
Volume 2. Four more stories set in Amazon bestselling author John Conroe's Demon Accords universe: the mind of a mind reader, babysitting the supernatural, packing up, and what's it like to be a queen. More fun for fans of the Accords with set up for the series story arc.

In volume 2 of The Demon Accords Compendium back stories continue for the demon accords universe.

It starts out with Lost Souls, which features Nika, the resident telepath who follows a man who kidnapped a baby. What she finds is a Vorsook, a very powerful alien who can control the minds of almost anyone. Hoping that she can block the alien from taking over her mind she is in for the fight of her life.

Sitting Pretty follows Toni, as she babysits the twins and tries to take them out for a peaceful walk on a beautiful day. As with most things in the Demidova life, nothing is ever as easy and peaceful as one hopes. The twins powers are still a mystery, but insights begin to emerge in this exciting tale.

Pack is All takes place right before Sitting Pretty and takes place between the New York Pack Alpha’s and Declan, who much to the alpha’s dismay has slighted them and the pack by interfering in pack business. Declan, however, feels that as Stacia’s mate he has the right under pack to law to use all resources at his disposal to protect his mate and any family they have down the road. This is a pivotal point for Declan, Statia and Holly and where they may go in the future.

Finally, the compendium finishes up with Queen of the Night which is done from Tanya’s point of view and a trip to Orlando and Disneyland. A demon portal is found in Orlando and needs to be closed. Chris plans a trip to Disneyland for the entire crew to check out the portal and hopefully close it. A glimpse of what we might expect in the Conroe’s next demon accords book is seen here.

With seven more books in the series and a stand alone novel (Black Frost), he doesn't seem to be slowing down. He cut his reading teeth on the likes of Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, JRR Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Andre Norton, and H. Beam Piper.

Financial professional by day and author by night (actually by morning), he bangs out his stories with fingers that are usually sore from forge burns or getting beat up at the dojo.
