Skylar remained where she was on the floor, rubbing at her throat and glaring at the others with those bright, watercolor blue eyes. At least her skin had turned less sallow. Seconds ago, her pallor had him…concerned.

Ladon did his best to push adrenaline, along with the burning need to claim her immediately, down deep in his gut, though it tested the limits of his control. He gave the members of his guard—his closest friends—as well as the advisors who made up his Curia Regis, a sharp nod and waited in silence while they filed out.

Brand sat, too, saying nothing, probably sensing the dangerous edge on which Ladon’s emotions balanced.

“Damage my future mate like that again, and I’ll rip your arms out of their sockets.” The warning slid from Ladon. He couldn’t have held it back even if he wanted to. Not that he wanted to.

Still on the floor, Skylar’s back stiffened. “I’m not your future anything, asshole.”

“Not helping,” Kasia said pointedly, adding a glare at him for effect.

Shit. Where’d his control go? He’d just been telling himself to cool it with the claiming language. Ladon clamped down on more words.

Kasia held out her hands and pulled Skylar to her feet, allowing Ladon a view of Skylar’s face. His body tensed in reaction. Now that he had a chance to study her, he couldn’t deny her beauty. Darker and sharper than her sister, those glacial eyes a striking contrast to her midnight hair, her skin a darker shade than Kasia’s paleness, and those lips…

Kasia focused on her sister, her gaze settling. “I love you, but you got this totally wrong.”

Given her attitude so far, Ladon waited for an immediate rejection, but Skylar didn’t speak for a long beat, searching Kasia’s eyes. “My sources informed me that a rogue dragon kidnapped you and dragged you here to mate you to a king. Brand is the rightful King of the Gold Throne, right? He killed Uther, and apparently at least some gold dragons now bear Brand’s mark on their hands, which makes him king. A king you’re mated to. Am I wrong?”

Kasia sent a smiling glance at Brand. “You got it mostly right, but what you missed was that I didn’t mate the king I was intended to.”

Skylar turned those ice-blue eyes on Ladon. As realization dawned, her lips quirked. “What happened, big boy? Couldn’t close the deal?”

Ladon held her glance with an unaffected stare, hiding his reaction. Why the hell was her insulting him so amusing?

I was originally given book five of this series to read for a review, but I had a hard time following the storyline consisting of many past events and numerous characters.

The author was kind enough to give me the other books so I could give the entire series a fair review rather than an incomplete one based on the last book.

I have tried to do just that, but in complete disclosure I did not finish either book one or book five, abandoning both around 50%.

Story Concept:
I normally start here with an overall view of the book or series I’m reviewing. But in all honestly, I’m not sure what it was supposed to be. And I can’t really summarize what I couldn’t follow.

Disjointed events created continuous confusion as to the direction of the characters and the world they lived in, leaving me with no idea what the concept truly was.

I attribute most of my failing to the numerous accounts of head-hopping (POV changes from one sentence to the next or within the same paragraph, both characters, and narrative) and sheer number of characters.

World-Building: D

I’m fairly certain the story took place in an “earth” type world with our laws, but with the addition of speculative features (such as male pregnancy). But this is about all I can tell you other than many of the characters were rich, and they were apart of mob families as well as police (simultaneously). Details to things like a room, or a building, or appearance were given, but I never knew where the characters were in their interactions with the space around them. 

There were plenty of finite details such as how a person dried off, washed, or walked, but nothing that anchored their existence in reality.

Characters: C-

Much of this book reads very omniscient with the occasional dip into third-person POV. I’m fairly certain this was not done on purpose, but I could be wrong.

The omniscient style made it difficult to connect with any of the characters because it kept them at arm’s length, and the sheer number of characters without good development to distinguish main characters from background characters, caused all of the personalities to blur together.

The POV shifts to third person on occasion exacerbated my confusion.

In the end, the characters never fleshed out for me and remained two-dimensional descriptions with no personality.

Plot: NA

I can’t give this a grade because I don’t have anything to really base it on. I feel like I should have some idea what the story was about with a minimum of 50% read on two books, but I don’t. This is one of the reasons I gave up on the books. I had a lot of characters, dialog, and minor interactions but no clear direction — nothing driving the actual plot.

Plot Execution: F

I hate to give any attribute a D, let alone an F, but when it’s the only fair score I can give because of the lack of clarity to the plot.

I felt what hurt this the most was the mass amounts of dialog exposition (dialog info-dumping from characters rehashing information known between them to deliver information to the reader) buried it.

This kind of information delivery is very awkward to me as a reader. It bogs down the story with information that would work better as a narrative, character interaction with the world, and character and world-building. As a read these attributes are what drives a story to unfold rather than remain sedentary.

Romance: D

The attempt was there, but I didn’t have enough character to provide a source for emotion or attachment.

Resolution: NA

I didn’t finish the books.

Enthusiasm: A

I do think the author cared about what they were writing and probably enjoyed writing it. Some of this came through on a few good lines, but much was lost under the crisscross of story fragments.

From what I did read they dove in ready to take on a massive story with huge twists, and numerous subplots with the hope to give the reader a great ride.

Conclusion: 

I really hope this writer continues to write and develop their craft. I think they might benefit from outside opinions. Not people they know, but strangers such as a romance oriented critique group. With a different set of eyes to look at the manuscript, they might be able to help fine-tuning dialog to work with character action to convey emotion rather than using exclamation points at the end of multiple sentences or combining exclamation with question marks.

I also think outside eyes could help avoid unneeded information or incomplete information that cause dents and bumps in the storyline.

A good content editor could also help tighten things up and help them read cleaner by pointing out dangling plotlines, POV switches, and out of character dialog or actions and or inconsistencies.

This is my first Abigail Owen read and I’m impressed. Owen’s work is on par with paranormal romance greats like Felicity Heaton and Christine Feehan. Her writing is sexy as hell. Owen’s plot and characters were more complex than typical paranormal romance fare, which is rare in this genre. I appreciate her creativity and shifting perspectives.

I eagerly anticipate future installments in this series

The only warning she got that she was being followed was the flick of a shadow in the headlights. Before she could react, a massive golden dragon slammed down on the road in front of her about half a mile out. She almost expected the ground to shake with the force, but the act was near silent.

Dammit.

She gritted her teeth and tightened her hands on the wheel. Rather than stop, Kasia hit the gas, pushing the car to go faster. He wasn’t taking her without a fight, that was for damn sure.

The dragon’s deep golden scales glittered in the oncoming headlights. He didn’t budge. But he did growl, his tail slashing back and forth.

“Move, you scaly bastard,” she muttered.

But she didn’t let up on the pedal.

He lowered his head and let loose a growl of warning, which she responded to by stomping harder on the gas.

“Get out of the way!”

She had no intention of playing chicken. If he didn’t, she’d ram this car down his fire-breathing throat. The hell with it. She didn’t want to go back to that cabin in Alaska anyway. Maul would miss her, but he’d be the only one.

Only the dragon didn’t move. Okay then. Kasia braced for impact.

At the moment she should’ve slammed into him, the beast heaved himself into the air, and she zoomed past, fishtailing underneath him from the force of the wind his wings caused.

He must’ve backed up, because he landed on the road in front of her again.

“You want another go, you oversized flying iguana?” she shouted, and bore down on him.

And again, he hopped out of her way only to land in her path.

Damn. Kasia held in a scream of fear-tinged frustration. They could keep this up all night, getting them nowhere fast. He wasn’t going to let her go.

With a growl of aggravation, though not defeat, Kasia stomped on the brakes. The tires squealed in protest, and the unpleasant odor of burning rubber followed her as she skidded the car to a stop broadside of the dragon, only a few feet away. If she rolled down her window, she could reach out and touch him.

The terrifying creature moved around the car, his movements more of a glide, like golden water flowing around her. He lowered his head to gaze in at her with an eye the size of her entire thigh. He snorted, and smoke trailed from his nostrils as he glared at her.

Please let this be Brand, and not some other phoenix-stealing dragon shifter.

Kasia glared back but raised her hands off the steering wheel in a gesture of surrender.

Darkness Rising definitely fits the bill when it comes to an action-packed paranormal romance. If you love dragon shapeshifters and wonder if it’s possible to have them in a modern-day setting, look no further than Katie Reus. She does a wonderful job of making these dragons blend in as much as possible. Until they can’t anymore.

While Darkness Rising is technically the last book in the series, it isn’t the last time readers will see these characters or this world again, and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the next chapter of this paranormal romance saga. Yes, saga. There’s so much that happens in this book that changes things forever for all the characters involved.

Yet for all the action and world-shattering events that happen, Reus doesn’t forget that there’s a romance to develop. I felt that Reaper and Greer had plenty of time to get to know each other and fall in love. At the same time, Reaper had to acclimate to his new and fast-changing surroundings which sometimes lead to some light humor. He IS pretty darn old.

It isn’t necessary to read the series in order to understand it, but because it’s better if you do, I suggest picking up the first book ASAP.

He’s learned to blend with humans in a safe, orderly, solitary existence. Tobias’s predictable life is upended with a kiss. Nurse Sabrina’s secret identity as a vampire heiress is immediately detected by the dragon doctor. While he’s able to withstand her glamour, Tobias cannot resist her charm. I adored this book as much as the first installment. The plot is rich, the characters magnetic. The looming complications of both vampire politics and the dragons’ duplicitous mother make this story riveting. Both books give the reader some satisfaction and closure, however, the larger plot of the dragon siblings and their estrangement will keep the series fresh for future installments. Books three, Manhattan Dragon, is expected this year.

Full disclosure, I am a huge Genevieve Jack fan. Other must-read series by Jack include Knight Games and Fireborn Wolves. Treasure of Paragon has the momentum to be another fan fave.

Using dragon magic, he’s able to pull her from the brink and offer her gainful employment. Believed to have psychic ability, Raven is tasked with searching for a cure and Gabriel’s salvation.

This book was a highly addictive, immensely entertaining ride through New Orleans. I was glued to this story, finishing it in one day. The characters were well-crafted and likable. The relationship between Gabriel and Raven unfolds at a delicious pace and explosive results. The plot and story-scape are incredibly imaginative. Jack has set the table for a dynamite series full of action, romance, and dragon politics.

This is the third Jack series I’ve reviewed and it might just be my favourite yet. I can hardly wait for Windy City Dragon, book two in this series. Other Jack series worth checking out are Knight Games and Fireborn Wolves.
