Book Review: Lucas (Vampires in America #6) by D.B. Reynolds

Lucas (Vampires in America #6) by D.B. Reynolds

THE BADLANDS of SOUTH DAKOTA … haunting landscapes, legendary outlaws, and … vampires?

LUCAS DONLON is a Vampire Lord, one of the most powerful vampires in North America and beyond. Charming and irreverent to his friends and lovers, he enjoys everything about his life as a vampire. But when a neighboring vampire lord declares war, he soon discovers that Lucas is as every bit as lethal as he is charming.

KATHRYN HUNTER doesn’t care about powerful vampires or their wars. Her baby brother is missing and she will do anything to find him, even if it means going against both her FBI bosses and the local vampire lord. But Lucas Donlon has other plans for the lovely FBI agent who’s landed on his doorstep.
Waging war against their enemies and each other, Lucas and Kathryn will risk everything to keep the most deadly vampire war in hundreds of years from engulfing every vampire, and human, in North America.

A while back I read Raphael (Book #1) and absolutely loved it. Reynolds's vampire lords were old school and powerful with telekinetic abilities and a psychic connection to their fledglings, as well as being territorial and non-repentant about what they are. Then she adds that little bit of soft and chewy center in their heart to make a tasty box of vampire chocolates. As if that wasn't enough, Reynolds creates smart, kick-ass women to bring these bad boys to their knees. Weave that into a solid storyline and BAM! Happy reader.

Even though this is the sixth book in the series, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. It is a PNR and the sex is on the erotic side, but it is much more than that. There is a strong and tight mystery going on that I wasn't able to figure out till the end as well as some secondary plots to keep things moving. We get satisfying closure at the end, but also an exciting lead into the next book.

Lucas is fun and sexy with a nice dark edge to him, while Kathryn is strong and relatable. I really enjoy how Reynolds structured the story; Lucas and Kathryn both have their own storyline and conflict that eventually merge to create a romantic storyline too. In the beginning we flip between their POVs and get to know each one separately. It is funny how they are both dreading the meeting they must have about Kathryn’s brother’s disappearance and neither have any idea how this will change their lives, but we do <G>. Reynolds has done an excellent job of balancing the series story arc with the romantic book story arc.

Dark, sexy and action packed, this series is a must read for any vampire PNR fan.

4.5 “do you ride bareback?” Sheep

  4. I know it is weird, but I can't stand her book covers. They look so...I don't know like a bad photoshop and not creative or imaginative. They make me not want to pick up her book. I liked book 1 okay, but I didn't care enough to have continued with the series.

Good review though. I may revist this series in the new year
