When her mother disappears, Clary Fray learns that she descends from a line of warriors who protect our world from demons. She joins forces with others like her and heads into a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld.
I liked it. It was very young adult, but entertaining. I haven’t read the books, but after seeing the movie my 12 year old daughter and I want to read it. Even though I didn’t know the story I could tell there were large chunks of the book left out or glossed over. The plot centers on finding a special cup that I think makes more Shadowhunters. They give a quick flashback montage about the bad guy Valentine and what he wanted to do with the cup and some history, but it went really quick and when he was trying to force Clary to drink his blood from it and I have no idea why.
The romance was kind of rushed, and I don’t know if there was a lot of angst in the book with the love triangle, but it wasn't really part of the movie. The set up for the "big" kiss scene between Jace and Clary was cheesy, but the kiss… hot.
The special effects were fun, especially the demons that attacked the Shadowhunters lair. There is one scene where 4 of our heroes are facing a bunch of demons and there is no way out, but Clary finds some magic and freezes them! It was really cool. Now, if you standing there with frozen demons that want to kill you and a big sword what would you do? Yeah, kill the suckers while there are frozen! But our four heroes carefully weave around them to get out the door to get away while the demons are slowly unfreezing. *sigh*
Probably not worth full price, but if you are looking for an afternoon out of the heat and some young adult urban fantasy action with some funny one liners, you could do worse. Definitely worth a rental.
One last thing that bothered me. You know that wide eyed Orlando Bloom/Legalss thing? Jace should dial that back a bit and Clary? Girl needs a brow wax!

ReplyDeleteI'm going to check this one out for sure!
Good r review :) I saw it this weekend, I have read the books and you'll definitely like them more. They have better pacing and aren't so emo-teen-romance. The movie felt rushed to me, and they included things from book two which could have waited to give more time for better flow of this movie. Also yeah, that scene with the frozen demons lol!!
ReplyDeleteYou have the wrong title written here though. The movie is The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones. Not yet City of Ashes, that's book/movie two :)
Nice review. I've read the books although I stopped at like the third one I think. The only book-movies I plan on going to see for full price are going to be Vampire Academy and Catching Fire.

I do have the books, only I have not read them yet. I wanted to before the movie came out, but it snuck up on me. Someday though ...
