Sheep Book Review: Wicked (A Wicked Trilogy Book 1) by Jennifer Armentrout

Wicked (A Wicked Trilogy Book 1)
By: Jennifer Armentrout
New Adult/Paranormal Romance
Pages: 300

Plot:
Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

The first few pages of this story had me wondering why I downloaded the book. Was my "shop on a whim" a waste? Did I pull the unlucky number from the wizards hat? I was nervous, but by the end of the second chapter...it hooked me. Sold. Completely absorbed. What a find this one was!

I didn't have a clue about the author or her writing ability, taking that reading leap of faith can be a let down sometimes. But not here, not today and not with this new series!

The overall feel of this story is very NOLA, and as someone who's been to the big easy I loved that. The food, the smells, the music, the vibe, the author does a wonderful job of implanting that city into these pages. It all jumped off and grabbed me, made me want to head back to the French Quarter! (*Update, I ended up making Beignets at home!)

The story itself is fresh and fun, steamy with romance, snarky and outright wild at times. It's a big mix of the action packed excitement and sexy-alpha men who can give that hot romance. I love the build that some couples can exhibit, this pair is magnetic. A strong female lead who I hope will only grow more as the series progresses. She's not a damsel in distress and doesn't need a man to save her. Thank the gods for that!

The Fae in this series are BAD, and I mean soul sucking ruin your day with some death bad. They are from a place called Otherworld, which is a realm that wants to bust through to the human side and suck us all dry. No straws needed. I'm good on the soul sucking, thanks.

This group of Order members are our only hope to save the world and all that we love. I could not have asked for more in this saga. You kind of know what's coming, but the misdirection that's thrown now and then makes the writing magician really work the crowd for that shock and awe factor! Suspensions are confirmed by the end and it only adds to the overall hook on this engaging adventure.

A sweet toothed fairy may have stolen the whole show, the added comic relief was spot on. Whacky side characters wanted and loved in my book!

I wanted more to read and can't wait to see what happens next!
