When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro comes a supernatural mystery starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam (C) Universal
This was a visually stunning movie. The use of color as symbolism, the shadows, costumes, Hiddleston's butt...and how can you go wrong with Charlie Hunnam? It was a Victorian Gothic feast for the senses.
But the story...predictable and linear, not to mention some plot holes and parts that had me thinking "Why didn't they just...?" At no point was I surprised by the twists. There are lots of jump scares with rotten corpses and a lot of blood. A few are properly creepy, but for the most part nothing I haven't seen before. I loved the cast and they did a great job with what they were given. I don't think I could stand to live during that time period...those clothes looked suffocating, but pretty.
If you love the cinematography (also Tom and Charlie) of the trailer then this is worth a matinee price and seeing it on the big screen will enhanced the experience. The rest of you can wait and rent it.

I was on the fence about this one but it sounds not so bad now.
ReplyDeleteVisually rich, agreed! The cast elevates a predictable plot. I enjoyed the Gothic atmosphere, but the story needed more depth. Speaking of puzzles, this movie's plot was much easier to solve than today's Wordle Unlimited! Still, a fun watch for the visuals and actors. Worth a matinee if you love the aesthetic!
ReplyDeleteBlood-red clay and seductive strangers, sounds like my Tuesday! Actually, speaking of predictable plots, I once tried to write a mystery novel and the ending was so obvious my beta reader guessed it halfway through chapter one. It was a real block breaker moment, realizing I needed to seriously rethink my approach to suspense. Gorgeous visuals though, that's undeniable, even if the scares were a bit blah. Hiddleston's butt is always a plus.
ReplyDeleteFrom the first frame, the movie dazzled with rich Victorian aesthetics, but the storyline felt like a worn path, lacking surprises. The visual feast, complete with Hiddleston's presence, was something to behold, yet the plot holes distracted me. I once faced a similar issue while chatting on Omegle, where expectations ran high but the conversation took predictable turns, leaving me a bit underwhelmed. Still, the experience offered moments worth remembering.
ReplyDeleteGuillermo del Toro’s aesthetic always promises a visual feast, and Crimson Peak delivers gorgeously on that front. However, the story felt a bit too straightforward, lacking surprise or innovation. I remember dealing with a similar disappointment when I bought an elaborate puzzle from Monkey Mart, expecting a challenge but finding it quite simplistic and predictable. Still, the experience was enjoyable thanks to its presentation and design.
