YA Author Kj Moullen share a WTF-ery? moment. Spoiler alert: it's ghosts! + giveaway

I have always danced to the beat of my own drum. The path less traveled always seemed to call to me. This included the genre of books I would devour when I was younger. I loved the thrill of horror. The call of distant magical realms was my reality. The twist and turns of a mystery intrigued me. Certain things in a person’s life shape their choice of likes and dislikes. I have a few of those however some things I was definitely born with.

My love for books runs long and deep, so much so, when I was a baby/toddler, I couldn’t go to sleep without my little book of Mother Goose stories. Most children have a blanket or a beloved stuffed animal they faithfully carry with them to share childhood adventures, but not me I had my Mother Goose book that accompanied me everywhere. I still have that book today. Fantastic memories of childhood obsessions that defiantly carried over into adulthood, however, today I just fall asleep reading my favorite new book not snuggling with it.

Despite the oddity with my special book as a young child, I loved the adventures that the outdoors provided for a little girl with a very active imagination. So, when my parents announced that we were moving to Alaska, I was very excited, until we moved into a haunted hotel. Yes, you read that correctly, haunted! My parents had purchased a small motel along the beach road of Homer, Alaska. They renovated that motel and purchased another in the center of town. The new hotel was close to fifty years old and had an owner’s quarters on the backside of the hotel, where my family moved into after the purchase.

At first, all seemed fine, I had my chores that I would help out within the hotel, such as helping folding towels down in the laundry room and wrapping the guest drinking glasses. While I would be unloading the glasses from the dishwasher than carefully wrapping them, I would hear loud music and banging from several of the hotel rooms that were on this floor. The first time I heard the noises, I went up to the front desk clerk to let them know about the noisy hotel guest only to find out that all those rooms were vacant. We went down to make sure the radio hadn’t been left on in the rooms but when we arrived, all was quiet. This became a regular occurrence. I would dread going down in this area and my parents would tell me it was just my overactive imagination and it was nothing. Eerie and odd cold sensations would overcome me in other locations of the hotel, misty figures seen out of the corner of my eye was a constant. I can say when we eventually moved, I was not sad to leave behind the ghosts that wondered that place. When I talk to my parents now about that hotel, they admit that they believed it was haunted as well but didn’t want to freak me out more than I already was.

I have to say that I am thankful for the experience of the haunting at the hotel. If anything, it helped foster my belief in the unknown and the possibilities of the weird and different. I like to believe that it molded my imagination which strengthened my love for the magic of books.
