Sheep Book Review: Mortal Bone by Marjorie Liu

Mortal Bone, by author Marjorie Liu, is the fourth novel in her Urban Fantasy series 'Hunter Kiss'. Action-packed and laced with drama delivered in typical Liu fashion, Mortal Bone takes you beyond the depths of imagination and back.

Plot:
When the bond Maxine Kiss shares with the demons tattooed on her skin is deliberately severed, the demon hunter is left vulnerable and unprotected. For the first time in ten thousand years, the demons have a taste of freedom. And as the little demons grow more violent and unpredictable, Maxine starts to fear they will lose their minds without her. Reuniting won't be easy, since a greater temptation waits for these hellions: a chance to return to their lives as Reaper Kings, and unleash hell on Earth.

The prison walls are falling and demons beyond imagination are getting free. These fiends from hell are all locked onto one target: Earth, a plethora of food just ripe for the taking. Only a small group can stop them, or perhaps join them, and leading the way is one badass chick named Maxine Kiss. These books are some of the most gruesome and gory I've ever read in this genre, but the narrative is laced with such beauty and depth it's far beyond any labeling category.

I first picked up this series when I found it in the "SciFi" section of my local Borders (long before it went bankrupt. And PS can I get my $20 back for joining your rewards club?!) and what really drew me to the book was the cover. Yes I am a cover whore and this one jumped out at me. Diving into the first couple chapters of The Iron Hunt I knew I had struck gold-pressed latinum, and the following novels have not only been one of the most rewarding series of my life but has lead me to KNOW that great women writers are out there. Today. Not only leading the way in this series but Liu is also the best female writer Marvel comics has working for them in the current era.

But getting back to Mortal Bone...I had so many questions and concerns over these characters in whom I've become emotionally invested. Would Maxine ever be able to control that dark voice living in her? Would she and Grant fall apart as their powers became too much to handle? Can love occur at all? And will Maxine ever get pregnant?! You get many answers in the latest edition, but with them come more doors opening to new possibilities and characters coming into play that could be big game changers. It's fascinating and frustrating at the same time but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Zee and the boys are some of the most crazy little demons in this whole made up world of Liu's. You can't help it, no matter what they do (or eat. cause trust me they eat chocolate covered axes and bombs!) you feel for the little guys. The Kings of old and the lethal Queen of today who holds their little hearts all mixed with the sexiest Lightbringer on this side of the Labyrinth. Fantastic!

My only downside was where the heck did Lord Ha'an's slave go? He was a major player in past books but as we get more Ha'an and several other new guys, there is no mention of the slave Ha'an owns. Unless I missed that part but I'd hate to think a character slipped through the cracks like that. Either way, that man is sexy bad and I swear I thought some sexual tension was about to build between him Maxine. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment to in the series and ready to follow Liu into any void in this realm or the next.

If you don't know Liu. You should. Grab this series and get ready to immerse yourself in something great!
