Sheep Movie Review: Dark Shadows directed by Tim Burton

Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton, stars Johnny Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter. This movie never hits the comedy mark and falls short of a anything horrific, and while I'm a bit confused with what the ultimate goal of the movie was at least I'm still a Depp fan.

Plot:
Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

Johnny Depp can act, there's really no question there. He likes working with Burton, who's also an amazing director and supremely talented, but what happened with Dark Shadows is a mystery to me. It was as if a whole mess of ideas got thrown in at one time but no one could choose what to leave out; so they just decided to add them ALL as one and let the cards fall where they may. So many severely underdeveloped characters are set in story that had so many different plot holes an inconsistencies it's a wonder this one left the editing room at all. The costumes are pretty fantastic and the 70's soundtrack was far out, man, but the acid trip never took off for me.

Eva Green does sell an evil lady out to punish the man that broke her heart, but the chemistry between Depp and her wasn't there. And did she really think that after locking up her lover for 200 years he would suddenly realize how much he DOES love her? No, I think not. So instead they match him up with a different young psychotic woman who's so vanilla it's just dripping from her ice cream cone skin. By the time you get to the climatic ending there's yet another plot twist that just never works out, making this by far one of the least entertaining movies I've seen all year. It's pretty bad when you want to ask for your money, and the two hours of your life you just wasted, back at the end of a film but that's how I felt.

I'm suggesting you wait to rent this one or borrow it from a friend that happens to buy it. I love me some vamps but you better give me a fun story to go with it.

  1. Oh noooooooooooo!!!! Extreme disappointment here - wailing and gnashing of teeth going on. I was supposed to go see this tomorrow. My son and I were going to do a treat of a day at the theater with this first and catch the Avengers following - looks like we will switch it up to Avengers and follow with Battleship LOL Thanks for sharing my friend, as always a stellar job - extra moonpie for you!

  3. Oh how sad! :( I never go to the movies, so I was really looking forward to seeing another Burton/Depp adventure. Oh well, I guess I will put the money I would have spent towards my book stash. Thanks for the review.

    1. Yeah but you know they will do another film! They work well as a team but just not in THIS one. Abe Lincoln Vamp Hunter later this year! Hope it rocks better!

  4. But it was like Cooper was just thrown in for fun. And what was up with the daughters little speech during that performance? It just again added to the overall mish-mash of a hard to follow script. *le sigh*

But I'm with ya on the Abe one! Should be a TON better! :)
